Listening to a replay right now of American Top 40 from May 25, 1974; 39 years ago today. This song was at #4 on the Billboard Hot 100. Nice to listen and go back in time when I was 11 years old and hear these songs, many of which I still have today. I think when we were growing up and listening to all these great artists that we never realized how privileged we were! God, Turing on the radio was like a religious act that we took so much for granted. Now the music has no soul and like the song American Pie the music today has died.
And charisma, a great sense of fun, and ability to connect to an audience- his version of The Show Must Go On is just riveting and, to me, perfection. I wonder if he was high as a kite singing it?!
Chuck Negron was the main singer in 3 Dog Night - either you've got it, or you don't - Chuck Negron, cool, handsome with an amazing voice and range to his voice, expressive too.
The words High Wire is approaching his 4 octave vocal range. It’s a fun song. I’m impressed. I can’t stop hearing everyday. I’m trying to imitate his vocals but not quite there yet! Lol
As someone who did grow up to experience it, and with older brothers and sister, I can tell you that even as comparatively commonplace as quality musicianship and songwriting and arranging as this was, I can remember staring at my little radio and saying to myself, "this is amazing, it can't last forever." Even the 80's were amazing, they just sounded different with all of the technical gimmickery infused into the music. The 90's is where things really started to take a nosedive.
Steve Blaugh You're right, during the 90's was the transition. Most noticeably, groups just stopped signing in or with backup HARMONY format (e.g. America & Crosby, Stills, Nash) and it became mainly just one solo singer with the same mono type mid-range voice (cookie cutter voice-same voice and style with different song and music).
You always had the radio on and you couldn't wait for your favorite song to come on. They didn't play just 10 songs over and over back then like they do today. So your favorite song might come on once a day if you were lucky and it was when you least expected it... it really made you happy. the 70s were great. We would also listen to the CBS Radio Mystery Theater each night with the radio under our pillows. Radio was everything. From your favorite song, to spots for movies. The radio spots for Jaws terrified you as much as the movie.
When Show Go On came out I was 12 and it was among my favorite tunes. Everyone in the band Three Dog Night sing and play with such passion! I later saw the band at the Carlton in Bloomington, 1983 and their performance was so incredible I had forgotten I was on a date. When the show was over the lights came on and there sat this gorgeous woman I had taken to the show. Well, music really moves me.
A brilliant rendition by a brilliant group. Many groups would have made this circus theme sound absolutely silly, but these pros pulled out off beautifully, and boy does this song stick in your head. The melody, the vocals/harmonizing,the arrangement is a masterpiece. It’s the kind of song that when it comes on the radio, you stop hearing anything else around you. It is commanding of your attention. It is that good. This performance is stellar.. I don’t want to say that the new music is boring, lackluster, and non creative, but I have to. Don't even get me started on Behind Blue Eyes. NO cover band deserves to be in the RRHOF (as much as it is rigged as it is).
For you kids under 35 years of age: This is called a Rock'n'Roll band. Great lyrics, great melody, great vocals, great instrumentalists. Don't be frightened.
I like both versions! Saw Leo in concert in 1977 and he put on a good show! And don't get me started on how great TDN is!!! Such talent back in the seventies!
Leo Sayer has some nerve.... Ray Parker Jr wrote, You make me feel like dancing" in it's entirety at home with no help from anyone else and Leo is credited for writing it...
I just noticed this performance was remixed, using the regular in studio release. While that version is great, this live version is so incredibly much more enjoyable to me. The way "walkin on the wire" is thrown together is just one of the many unique presentations which I hope won't be messed with in the future. There's nothing like live music and to be able to offer this in such a fabulous way is indescribable.

Baby, although I chose this lonely life
It seems it's stranglin' me now
All the wild men, big cigars, gigantic car
They're all laughin' at the lie
Oh, I've been used Ooh-oh-oh-oh
I've been a fool, oh, what a fool
I broke all the rules Oh, yeah
But I must let the show go on
Baby, there's an enormous crowd of people
They're all after my blood
I wish maybe they'd tear down the walls of this theater
Let me out, let me out
Oh, I'm so blind, oh, I'm blind
I wasted time wasted, wasted, wasted time
Walkin' on the wire, high wire
But I must let the show go on
Oh, I'm so blind, oh, I'm blind
I wasted time, wasted, wasted, all too much time
Walkin' on the wire, high wire
But I must let the show go on
Baby, I wish you'd help me escape
Help me get away
Leave me outside my address
Far away from this masquerade
'Cause I've been blind, oh, so blind
I wasted time, wasted, wasted, all too much time
Walkin' on the wire, high wire
But I must let the show go
I must let the show go
I must let the show go on

@@colindavies5603 Nope. Sayer in 1973, and 3DN the following year. They paid homage to Leo Sayer.
He’s amazing on this song! Super voice! His vibrato is superb! O so blind, 2-3 seconds of vibrato!
What a great live version the harmonizing so hypnotic
Эту песню я помню с 1975 года. Сейчас 62.
I remember going down to the record store when i was 13 and spending my lawn mowing money on this album. I LOVED this song so much when i was a kid. They dont make music like this anymore. The 70's were the best!!!
Эту песню я впервые услышал лет в 13.
Спасибо большое.
"It uses a circus theme as a metaphor for dealing with dificulties and wrong choices of life"
Alex Hernández Leo Sayer wrote and released it. Leo performed it in a clown outfit. I guess they copied the theme. They did a great job though.👍
@@kazabushy TDN covered the song... I saw a video clip of the original.. I 've always thought that the Barker imitation in the TDN cover was a nice touch
@@TabithaReminiec3399 Yes I know they did. Please don't educate me on rock history. I have never been a fan of covers unless they pay homage to and make people aware of the original artist. Don't even get me started on Behind Blue Eyes. NO cover band deserves to be in the RRHOF (as much as it is rigged as it is).
@@kazabushy don't get so offended...
Sorry if I repeated myself there
I was reffering to the carnival Barker imitation
@@kazabushy they did only one cover..this song
TDN had other songs that were hit records
One of my favorite bands from back in the day. What the hell, Joy to the World was my high school graduation song in 1971.
Brilliant performance
He’s a cool dude! Awesome vocals!
For you kids under 35 years of age:
This is called a Rock'n'Roll band.
Great lyrics, great melody, great vocals, great instrumentalists.
Don't be frightened.
I love the costumes! Gosh, this takes me back to high school. Fun, fun times.
I guarantee you that Leo Sayer wasn't unhappy about the Three Dog Night Version....it put more money in his pockets...also, it is an awesome version.
That's not what Wikipedia says, it says 'He was not reportedly happy about them changing the line "Won't" to "Must let".
Sorry to tell you. But leo sayer actually was mad by the way they sang it. He even said so. That's why he went and did it the way he wanted it done
Yay
Excellent, excellent version!👍
Am I the only person that's amazed that anybody of my generation is alive with all the tight, tight pants people wore in the 70's?
prolly not many kids between em.
We wore tight then to attract the ladies, now they're just tight period and no ladies are attracted...
Michael Crehan you suck
Like a cheap motel; No ballroom!!!!!!
Great song !! Love it!!
Such a wonderful song, those were the nice melodies, not anymore, cool music back in those old days.
Chuck can sing, Perfection!
Best song ever.. Whoever dislike it.. Dont know about music
