  • Three Dog Night is an American rock band. They formed in 1967 with a line-up consisting of vocalists Danny Hutton, Cory Wells, and Chuck Negron. This lineup was soon augmented by Jimmy Greenspoon (keyboards), Joe Schermie (bass), Michael Allsup (guitar), and Floyd Sneed (drums). The band registered 21 Billboard Top 40 hits (with three hitting number one) between 1969 and 1975. Because Three Dog Night recorded many songs written by outside songwriters, they helped introduce mainstream audiences to writers such as Paul Williams ("An Old Fashioned Love Song") and Hoyt Axton ("Joy to the World").

    Cory Wells saw Otis Redding perform this at the Whisky A Go Go in the mid 1960s. Wells cut this with 3DN to honor Redding after the latter died in the plane crash that also took the lives of four members of the original Bar Kays.

    I have to say that this performance by Corey is by far one of the best ever done of this classic, only one other tops this and that's by the late great Mr. Otis Redding!! IMO

    What a live performance! The band is on fire, and Corey is in my (fave) '72-'73 period. Sounding just amazing. And seriously...how about a hand for the sound engineers for these Beat-Club performances? We're hearing this in Mono, and the mix is just superb...nearly 50 years later!

    I was not even 10 years old when I got hooked on the Dog Night, when I was 17 I was in Midland TX and they did a show in Odessa the next town over. I had the time of my life. It was a small venue but had no trouble seeing the entire original band. The only downer was the organ didn't work and there wasn't enough time to find a replacement. Look at the map of TX, it's west TX in the desert. But it didn't matter he made up just fine with the piano. Certainly one of the coolest things I got to do in my life. God bless America God bless TX and RIP to the members that made this incredible band.

    I think folks forget how good TDN’s rhythm section actually was. Floyd’s rimshots may not top Al Jackson Jr’s of course, BUT he adds so much muscle to their sound - when you put Corey, Mike, etc on top it “sounds” extra-groove - I.e. like Three Dog Night proper. It’s brilliant timeless stuff.

    • @deadlyheadbang
      @deadlyheadbang 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah all of that still occurs. All you old farts just don’t seek it out. You expect to be given your music on a platter. Well that platter (tv/radio) has run dry of what y’all desire so it’s just automatically GONE somehow? Well there’s still TONS of great bands that play live, tour and release records. They don’t use auto tune and everyone plays their instruments. It’s just not on the platter for ya anymore and yall just ain’t hungry enough.

      @@deadlyheadbang I play live - there’s nothing better than playing with a live band. But how many of the top acts play totally live with no computers, autotune, etc? It’s a show, great lighting, dancing, etc. But it’s an act, it’s theatre, not music.

      @@kasperkjrsgaard1447 As I said, I play live, and I’ve listened to plenty of good LIVE bands. But when you get to the top, you have to ask how many are playing completely live. I think the point is not whether they’re playing live, but whether they want to give the impression they’re playing (and singing) live. Examples: Madonna (people who’ve been to her concerts swear she’s miming); Dolly Parton (at Glastonbury she made up a song about the mud - her live singing voice was very different from when she sang pre-planned songs!); Spice Girls (obviously miming! Singing by hidden backing singers) - when Mel B was asked about it she didn’t deny it.
