Hisense U8N Review | Dangerously Close to OLED?

- Does the Hisense U8N mini-LED TV, challenge OLED quality at a fraction of the cost? Caleb explores that question and everything else you need to know in our Hisense U8N review. With mini-LED technology, it offers impressive brightness, deep blacks, and vibrant colors. Despite minor quirks in user interface and processing, its overall performance shines in both SDR and HDR content. While off-angle viewing may not match OLED, its stunning contrast and picture quality make it a standout choice for those seeking premium TV performance at an affordable price point.

Hey everyone! I appreciate those of you who are commenting after actually watching the video as opposed to a reaction comment based on the title. It’s easy to tell the difference. I don’t know if could do a comparison to an LG C3, but def think that would be interesting - until the C3 sells out, that is. Now, who wants to see this do battle with the 2024 QM8??!! Let me know!
I would love to see that, Caleb!
Yes, we need a comparison to the 2024 QM8. Hopefully that TV releases soon.
What? No bloopers????
Nice review keep up the good work
Please do vs 😊
please do not water down your reviews by kicking detailed data to theoretical future videos. If I want a generic overview or review I'll read a press release or watch one of the other less detailed reviewers on youtube. You gained viewers because you're one of the best... I know it doesn't fit the profit model or algorithm, but quality over quantity... I hope you truly reflect on these comments before making your decisions. I know how much time and effort it takes to really test and dive into the data, but it's important for the enthusiast that watch your videos for fun or for buying decisions. Cheers.
WORD!!! , may be by adding a "Nerd-Only section" to his videos .. people are smart enough to stay or skip the section and you have the best of both worlds
I would appreciate it if you still put all the extra nerdy stuff in the description so I can reference each individual TV review for specs and such. Thank you for all the hard work! You are my first stop for TV info!
Yes please do both
Yes ! If I am reading this review 9 months from now I don't want to search thru later reviews to find the one with the specifications.
Then one wouldn’t watch the video
This is actually a fantastic idea.
Thank you for the review, and the new presentation format.
Your review looks great on my U8H and my U6K. I have had zero issues with either set. I'm a senior on a fixed income and these tvs def fit into my budget for a main living room set and my man cave baseball game viewing. Thanks Caleb.
I really appreciate the inclusion of actual data in reviews. Watched some guy talking about the u8n on TH-cam last week ... dude had no clue what he was talking about
Thanks for keeping it professional
are you talking about the TH-camr called “Quantum TV”?
@@UnleashedEx probably, tbf that guy had the 55" version which comes with less zones / brightness so maybe that was a factor
@@UnleashedEx I mean ... I'll let you decide for yourself
Are you referring to the 10% window nit measurements? Do you know how misleading that is on a LCD television?
This review is important to a lot of us budget tier enthusiasts! Thank you!!
Except you're gonna have to wait at least 6 months for the price to come down.Cause right now. They are no deal at all rightnow. They're the same as an oled
@@mrc2165 agreed!
Awesome review. Really looking forward to hear how the TCL equivalent stacks up.
I just picked up my U7K Friday and am absolutely loving it for gaming.
Check out our first impressions of the U9N, a new model for 2024 placed above the U8 series: th-cam.com/video/mba8Utg02AI/w-d-xo.html
The PQ of this one noticeably surpasses the previous one ( you asked, 8K topic). That one now looks duller compared to this one (more contrasty but in a good way).
The sound is great too. The bass in the music is awesome. Way to go (two thumbs up).
80% of the reason I watch this channel is to get myself reminded how good my TV is ( or can be),
Thanks for the review! Are you planning to test the U7N as well?
Omg I’ve been waiting for this!!!! Thank you! Watching now
I’m thinking I’m still going to go with the 85U8K because this does not quite seem like it’s worth the extra $500, what do you think?
@@tunerimportsmy exact thought, but it seems to be out of stock everywhere 😢
@@lpromer4796 yes! I’ve seen it in stock on Amazon but I travel a lot for work so have not ordered it yet because of timing.
U8k is amazing. I have the 55. Amazing all around tv.
@@jblaze600 after watching this I got the 75” U8K and I LOVE IT! Wanted the 85 but no one had it in stock
Purchased a 55” U8H 18 months ago (for $650, delivered) based on your recommendation and we have been really happy with it. For that price it was fantastic value.
How good are the black levels?
@@Noname-iq1gz I have the U8K and the black levels are stupid good, it looks VERY close to my OLED somehow. I think OLED's are going to go away and I have an G3.
Caleb, thanks for the very informative coverage of Hisense's new 2024 U8N QD MiniLED TV! I'm putting this video on our UN8 webpage and sharing it on A/V user forums and Facebook!!
Hi value electronics, I currently have a 75” Sony Z9D from 2017, but I want to upgrade to an 85” TV. Do you think this 85” Hisense U8N will be somehow at the same level once Hisense releases the 85” version or should I wait for the Bravia 7 or Bravia 9? Thanks in advance for replying!
@@lpromer4796 Sony's Z9D was a very nice TV. Yes, you would love Hisense's new 2024 85" U8N, but if your budget permits Sony's new Flagship 85" BRAVIA 9 would be the very best upgrade choice. The 85" BRAVIA 7, which is $2,000 lower cost would be a very nice choice.
Great episode. It is nwrdy enough for me, as long as you promise to get nerdier in a comparising episode 😊
Good stuff Caleb. I'm a nit nerd and look forward to the detail oriented comparisons
Great review. This thing looks glorious.
Love the review!
I would like to see you talk about e-ARC and the distribution of HDMI 2.1 ports. I know you talked about 2 HDMI ports supporting VRR and other features indicating those are possibly 2.1 ports. What about, if one of them is being wasted as an e-ARC? TCL QM-8 had e-ARC on seperate HDMI port than the two 2.1 ports. Please include that in your future reviews.
Thank you for the amazing review!
Hey Caleb! Love the review! I have just a small suggestion. Could you include a "reflection handling" section to the reviews? Its a big factor in decision making for consumers.
I agree that Hisense processing is not what it should be and should be improving . The brightness and color palette is better but I feel that the processing is a takeaway, Caleb. I am glad to see more competition in the television arena via OLED, miniLED, or QDEL. THANK YOU forthe fine presentation.
I must say as someone who works with TVs all day and got a sneak peak into the new Hisense range that the processing is now much better than before the process is now touching areas it didn’t before like word clarity making sure words on screen are not pixilated and many others
@@jacoboliver1607 I am glad to hear that. Competition is the best thing for all of us.
Give them a few more years and their processing will be up there among the best TV brands. I just got my U7K, and yes, picture processing is slightly a let down compared to Sony's, but not a dealbreaker. Very happy with my unit after some calibration. I'd imagine the next time I'm upgrading to the newer gen Hisense TV (provided this unit holds up well for a good number of years and I am a happy customer) they would have been a top tier brand already.
My U8k processing is pretty great. It upscales sdr/hdr really well, better than my LG C1 & C9. Movies and Sports look amazing. Dolby vision looks good also.
Bro you are comparing the processing on a C9 that's 5 years old and a C1 that's 3 years old to the processing of a 2023 TV? .. are you slow?.
I used to own a high-end audio/video store and sold the first 40" Pioneer Elite plasma TV for $20k. My Pioneer Elite 61" rear-projection TV was $6.5k. My Sharp LCD front projector was $8k. Now we can buy an awesome 65" 4k flat screen TV for about $1k. Life is good!
Hey Caleb I enjoy your content so of course I would like any TV battles. 😮 QM8 vs Hisense part 2 hell yeah. Maybe vs everyone else. 🤓
Awesome review! Cant wait for the 110in ux
does the 75” Hisense U8N use an ADS Pro Panel? thank you for all the knowledge and help.
Really good work on your Reviews!
Goldenear and SVS in the house I see! Very excited for some upcoming audio reviews!
Me too. Love Goldenear reviews
Would it be possible to get some review of the reflection handling? Some actual footage of what having a window reflecting on the screen would look like? Thanks a lot! And awesome job BTW!! 👍
Finally! Thanks Caleb!
I have a u8h and love it. Always get compliments on the clarity of the tv. Only downside is sides i have are 1) the studder/jidder that happens in low frames and 2) only one earc/arc hdmi port. U8n looks promising
I'm very excited for TV's this year. Thank you for this review. I will definitely consider this TV. I didn't hear you mention the price. Hopefully it comes in at a good price. I'm going to also be looking at the Sony 7. We'll see how you like that one too after you test it. 👍😎
You didn't hear the price? You didn't watch the first minute of the video?
@@Rastor0 I was distracted, but no didn't hear the price. I guess it was also too hard for you just to provide it too 😮
Thanks Caleb. This Hisense just went to the top of my list. I hope you do the TCL equivalent soon so I can make my final decision before the Olympics !
U8K is under 1yr old, and i am not feeling any fomo....Great review
Damn, a mature consumer. The world needs more of you lol
I loved the U8k that I gave my dad. There will be many big upgrades over the next few years - so I'd use this one out and marvel at how substanstancial the advancement that the U8S or whatever brings down the road. Make the upgrades really count and spend less.
I have the U8K,, this thing is AMAZING, great blacks, and incredibly bright. So much value.

Calib so love your work.
Question which is better overall Sony X90l or the Hisense u8n.
Sony X90l is better for Movies
Hi Caleb, thank you so much for this video. I really like your videos and reviews, but the problem is that I am from Europe and the same TV is different in Europe and in the US. Is this also the case with the Hisense TV?
Great review as usual. So did they finally upgrade from 8-bit to 10-bit panels? Sounds like color banding on lower-quality content is non-existent this year.
My current TV, a 50" Vizio MQX (the one with 240Hz PC gaming), has options for Warm, Cool and Normal temperature. I always keep mine on Normal because I don't like the red or blue tint to the others. Even if it's not as accurate overall, it looks perfect to me.
Great review !
I wonder how the comparison to the U7N would be ? Is the 7N better balanced by being less bright ? I love my 65" U8K but does it stand comparison or is the image less captivating in all areas ?
You mention Freesync Premium Pro.
Will Hisense implement G-sync as they did for the U8H?
Is the remote backlit by movement or button push?
When you do a comparison does the TV offer center channel with other external audio. With the TV's bass being on par with mid-tier sound bars it would be nice to have some extra bass from the TV while a Hisense soundbar is connected.
Which is a better deal and better tv the qm8 2023 or this new u8n I'm thinking of getting a 75" qm8
If you had to choose a TV for USB movies USB TV Shows,,,, Free to air low Picture Quality,,,,,,,, And 1080p Streaming APP'S What would be the best in Picture Accuracy Quality Hisense U8N or SONY X90l or x93L ,,, or LG QNED86 or 91 ?????
Hey Caleb, Thanks for the vid👍. I'm in the UK and am aware specs have been different from Hisence or TCL for different regions. Do you have any data on this kinda stuff? Love the varied content, please keep it up! Phil
I can't speak to TCL but for Hisense: Outside of design (different looking back and/or legs), speaker setup (the UK model is arguably better usually), TV tuner and OS (UK is VIDAA and US is Google TV) they have been the same spec and used the same panels in the UK and US since the 2023/K models.
So I'd assume that will continue for 2024/N models, though not all sizes come to the UK and there may be some minor models in one region that aren't in the other. The majority of them, ie A6N, A7N, E7N Pro, U6N, U7N, U8N and some sizes of UX are in the UK, but no U9N afaik.
I'm told this U8N will not come in 55" in the UK sadly, only 65" and 75", with maybe 85 and 100" later in the year. The U7N comes in 55, 65, 75 and 85" with the 100" U7K continuing on from 2023 acting as the 100" U7 model this year. It has 1620 zones and is the same brightness as the U7N so it will still make sense in the 2024 range specs-wise.
Caleb, you sir alerted me to Hisense and YT TV reviews many years ago. You all raved about the U7H. Mine was stuck on the ship for weeks out in the Long Beach waters a few miles out, Thanks Buttigieg. Got the U7G instead & I still love it. However it's not the U8G. Occasionally I've had to power it down and back on because the HDMI inputs don't always work. The sound for instance may stay on HDMI 2 after you switch to HDMI 1. Other than that, love it. Got the 65". Now I'm hot for the U8N. That's your fault too, lol. Thanks for years of great advice and nice personality and genuineness
I really like the work you're doing. I think that hisense tv are a good invesment for the price. I have a few points for which I would like some clarification. So far I heard that the U8N suffers from postarization. If it is true is it that bad? My 2nd point is the hisense U8N is an 8 or 10 panel. If I am right the the U8K has an 8 bit panel. The numbers of bit are linked with the numbers of colors a tv can display. (My english is not great but decent I think for a French guy!) Great job Caleb !
\L. Clement
caleb, do you know if this new remote is compatible with the U8K? I love my hundred inch version however, the lack of backlit on the remote was a disappointment.
Honest question, does anyone skip the nit-nerds section? I feel like it’s a fan favorite at this point
I would love to see how the TV handles Dolby Vision when gaming, I've tried so many Dolby Vision enabled TVs for gaming and found so many issues from over blurring to screen flicker on smaller darker details, would love to see what you manage to find on this TV
Hi there. Can you please mention the panels refresh rates and maybe color bit rate and FRC as well?
I got the U7K last black friday. For the price it's amazing. I don't feel like updating to these newer tv's. Mine has nearly all the features the flagship one's do.
How’s the picture on lower definition content?
The Hisense website mentions 5 speakers on board. You mentioned the subwoofer and the 2 downward firing speakers. I'd really like to know where the remaining 2 are positioned. Facing upward? Facing the sides like the U8K? Thanks.
Are you testing the new Roku Pro TV?
Not necessarily related to this tv. But with only 4 cdmi ports on most tvs and how some soundbars take one; what is your recommendation for HDMI switches? And what about older equipment that outputs composite or component cables?
What about when you compare the TV to budget friendly OLED’s like the LG C4 or the last years S90C. I will most likely wait till Black Friday time to buy one myself.
Hey Caleb! How do you think the ULEDx this year will compare at 98”? I am trying to convince myself to go larger (I have an 85 currently) but that 83” G4 is sucking me in….
Brilliant review. Although I would say instead of buying it now, simply wait a month or two, this will definitely get discounted to around 1000usd/euro
Hey can you verify the 55inch version im looking into that size for the U8N but iv heard its only 1800nits instead of 3000 and isnt as good all around. Thanks in advance
Does the mute icon stay up only when TV speakers are selected as the audio output or does the same thing happen if optical or eARC are selected for output?
I bought my first Hisense about 8-9 years ago n it’s time to upgrade. Definitely Hisense has some best pricing. Which should I upgrade to?
Ever since I got the TCL QM8 last summer, Ive had to stream everything through my Xbox. I thought HDR and Dolby Vison meant bright and popping pictures. It actually means "make everything super dark". So I use my Xbox so I can switch off Dolby Vision and use the TV's native picture presets which look far better
That also depends on manufacturing and panel tech processing choices made. I’m sure this is not the case for all tvs.
Thanks for your tip, I was hoping to find a way to turn off DV.
It means your TV doesn’t retain dark details, pretty simple. Only best TVs can do that.
Would you consider taking a look at the 75 inch version of this TV? My understanding is that it uses an ADS Pro panel instead of the VA panel of the 65 inch. I'm considering a Hisense for my next purchase but it needs to be a 75 inch and I would like to know how much contrast, if any, is lost with the ADS Pro panel. That model would also mitigate your biggest complaint with the U8N - the viewing angle.
1,300 nits with sdr is something that I been wanting in a 4k tv even with a 10% window in this video about the hisense mini led tv and I even want the full screen brightness to be 1,300 nits even in sdr.
Can you try to mention Contrast ratio and dimming zone count in these video. That's super important to me
It was reported the U8K in the 77” size used a different panel type (IPS?). Should we be concerned about this bigger version of the U8N doing the same? Is this accurate?
Looking to upgrade my living room tv and I want something over 70 inches. Would you recommend this Hisense 70” u8 for $2k vs an LG B3 77” oled for $1800?
Thank you Caleb, I have been waiting for your review of this and the upcoming UX. Btw, I don't like FMM, I know, it's not as the creator intended but I prefer to set the tv the way I want to view it (dont like shows where all you see is two pairs of eyes and teeth in a dark scene lol).
For someone looking to buy a new TV soon is this TV worth it over the U8K for watching cable TV and Netflix? Considering the big difference in price since the U8K in 65" is about $900 right now?
It’s a good review! The TV looks good!
I have the 75 inch qm8 and it’s a beautiful bright tv and if the u8n is brighter than that then that’s to bright for me
Im not in the tv market right now (Happy with my Sony X900H from a few years ago) I just like keeping up with the tv tech so I know whats out there when I am in the market to purchase again
I'd love to know what the Peak Brightness setting really does. Is it post processing? adding extra brightness? Or simply setting limits to the Peak Brightness of the highlights? Just looking for the most neutral setting here.
Is this U8N an upgrade to the U8K? What is the new TCL equivalent, I know in Europe they have the C series C855 Premium QD-MiniLED. Can u do a comparison on these?
I purchased a U8H a year ago and have had lots of trouble with a Sonos + AppleTV setup through e-arc. Really inconsistent response behavior and detection of Dolby vision / atmos. Any improvements there?
U8Series is the best line from Hisense, is just crazy the quality they offer.
A couple of other reviews indicate that the 55” has a lower spec and posterization issues whereas the 65” does not. Perhaps you could comment when you do final review. I do like your reviews and presentation
It's encouraging to hear that Hisense is producing an LCD TV with near-OLED performance. (I might wish for better wide-angle viewing characteristics, but I realize that no TV is perfect.) I'm just glad that Hisense includes a 55" model in the U8N series. There has been an unfortunate trend by TV manufacturers to sell their best TVs only in larger sizes. Many of us who appreciate excellent picture quality don't have the wall space to accommodate big TVs.
I remember and still use Hisense first QD-TV H9F 65 inch i also have from year later sony x950h in the bedroom but I must say H9F is still amazing for the money then and honestly I going to be my next brand as well but i love sony tvs to 🤣
What percentage of people, even those that do their research are really concerned with absolute accuracy? My guess is very few. Most people want a bright and colorful picture without going too far like vivid mode introduces.
I know the Sonya Bravia 9 is considerably more expensive, is it worth the extra price to get a little higher peak hdr brightness and Sonys wide angle view tech?
Any thoughts on the u7n? Not sure if I should get this or just last years u7k instead?
Caleb, please review the TCL x955! There's so little about it out there, I would love to know more about it and how it compares to flagship TVs like the G4 and S95D.
I bought 55U8KQ and its awesome,i like sport and gaming, top input for price range
Does it support 240Hz frames at 1080p like the previous U8K model?
I feel like I got really lucky when I decided to upgrade to the world of 4K and bought my U8H. I have plenty of criticisms and nitpicks, but it seems to be their only recent TV approaching accurate EOTF tracking. By the way, have they fixed the issue with lifted blacks in DV by now? I don’t remember reviews mentioning it on the U8H, but it was a common complaint in forums. (And something I experience as well)
Does it have the same eARC issues that plagued the U8K?
Here is something no youtube influences yap about. Multichannel sound using a bluray players Multichannel anolog outputs. Such as the Panasonic-dp-ub9000. I have this player and tried its Multichannel sound. Any you know what it sounds better than Sony-az7000es receiver.
When is the 110UX gonna be available for pre order?
Thank you for the great review! Now we'll just have to see what the U9N is going to look like midsummer. 👍😁 Come on Prime day! 😂😂
On the U8K, i had a similar problem with identifying HDR but I discovered that if you go into the menu and select game menu a panel comes up displaying FPS, HDR ( mode, or no) and VRR. This seems to work for most modes including youtube, this is how i fou d youtube seems to inly play HDR10 or HLG
Is it still a VA panel on the 65" and ADS pro on the 75"? U8
It’s really about the image processing algorithms more so than the underlying tech these days. The return to LED technologies with mini LED+micro dimming zones processing has been glorious.
Most overrated phrase in TV reviews is image processing. All these TVs do a fantastic job with High res content. It surprises me how many people still watch MASH or Green Acres
@@trewright1482 Overrated as in everyone should just buy the cheapest TV available and it will be as good as the top end TV of the same size regardless of image processing, dimming zones and so on? I don’t think so.
@@AleksLazar Overrated in everyone uses the term that only the highest brands can achieve. I'd argue most of these brands look fantastic with HDR content. Why people watch 1960's tv shows still is head scratching
@@trewright1482 I see what you mean about the type of content where it doesn’t make a difference. Probably nostalgia or curiosity. I rewatched the OG Star Trek not too long ago.
Great review. Was about to buy the 65" model in Australia until I realised our version doesn't come with Google TV!!
U8K, LG C3, or wait for the U8N? Also how frequent are people getting bad panels on a C3?
Hi Caleb , would it be possible to get an official statement from TCL and Hi Sense to explain why we get an inferior product here in Australia when LG ,Sony And Samsung give us the same product as overseas markets mostly,
When can I buy this tv in uk and will it be the same make and model the u8n and what price will it be in uk can't find it
What’s the best refresh rate tv for sports? I bought the 85inch U8 but it’s starting to be slow and have bad refresh rate.
With the Hisense 75" U8N & the Samsung 77" S90C selling for the same price on Amazon (~$1,995), it doesn't seem to have much of an edge, unless I'm missing something.
BTW does the U8N do Atmos pass-through on the eArc?
if price is almost the same, I would just go for OLED
Does the 75inch model the ADS Pro panel like last year?
Would love info on differences of the U8N vs U8NAU (Australian version). Last year's model was way worse than the U.S. version and Hisense seems to not disclose much info..
