Just grabbed my QM8 a couple weeks ago. Absolutely love it and don't regret my choice at all, but I'm glad the U8K is fantastic as well. More competition from the non premium brands is good for all of us as consumers!
Yeah and Hisense U8k also have a 750$ 55 inch version. It's 65 inch is 999.99$ and i believe the 65 inch Qm8 is 1199.99$ and they don't have a 55inch version.
I got the U8K 65" over a month ago and I have to say I am very happy. My son came over the other day and commented on how nice the TV was, and that it was better than his Samsung :) I would recommend it to anyone looking for a great TV that won't brake the bank.
@garrettstrutz7421 Yes...as a owner of both...I have the U8K in my Florida room and a Samsung S90 in the living room. The U8K is definitely beautiful but doesn't hold a candle to the Samsung Oled...no comparison
I just bought a U8K for $750 last weekend and I'm pretty happy with the purchase. I use my PS5 for apps, so no real problem there for me. Also, a side note on the remote, you can stand the remote up on it's end. It's an unusual feature, but I assume that is how Hisense intended the remote to sit.
I own a TCL and a Hisense and I like them both. You make good points between these two, but I think the extra brightness blowing out images on the TCL is enough to make me choose the Hisense.
This video helped me a lot. I chose the U8k because it's on sale at Walmart right now for $898. I dont regret it at all because sound quality is important to me. I do have a home stereo, but there are times I want to listen quieter than that can provide. Most of my watching is in a darkened room, so the brightness isnt all that important to me. Either way, I feel I couldnt have gone wrong though. Thank you for this. Youve made a subscriber out of me.
The U8K seems to do a better job with detail in dark scenes if we look at the scene in 14:52 , take a look at Mouse's shirt. It's practically not visible on the TCL, seems like they've artificially crushed the blacks and lifted the brightness to portray a higher contrast ratio.
Difficult really to tell if that's just the way their camera is picking up the two screens. It might be an optical illusion due to the background wall panel behind the units, but it almost looks like the two TVs aren't quite flush with each other, like they've been angled inward at the center. Also, I don't think Caleb mentioned if these comparisons were based on out-of-the-box or calibrated. I'm guessing the former. From reading/watching other reviews and comparisons, the U8K handles shadow detail better in some cases whereas the QM8 does a better job at tone mapping. It does sound like the differences are minimal though, definitely not a massive gulf between the two on either front.
@@ModeMan101 I've seen some reviews where it's much easier to see the difference on calibrated sets. But like you say the differences are hard to notice when the tvs are separate from each other. Hisense is cheaper though.
I bought the U8K after a lot of consideration, including this video. I was going to update about the issues you had running apps from Google TV, this has either been fixed, or it was an issue with that specific tv. I compared from Google TV and an outside source. I watched same content, and took stills of same moments to compare. Happy to say there was no detail lose using Google apps to play the content. I think anyone would be happy with either of these tvs, I am really happy with the U8K, and would highly recommend it.
@@xcloudx_ Yep, no regrets at all. I imagine I would have felt the same way about the TCL in the end, since they are so similar. I watch football mainly, but have watched some MLB on it. I was very happy with the pic during sports.
@@ForeverVersatile Very little. The only thing I noticed, was on older content and fast motion with long hair. It almost seemed like an over compensation. It does have motion settings that probably could be tweaked to get rid of that.
I wish this video covered console and PC gaming usage. That would be the deciding factor for me. The previous generation Hisense had some issues there (had one and returned it). Otherwise it seems like a "which one has the better sale" will be the go-to.
Absolutely one of the best reviews y'all have done. I loved you stepping in and pointing out the slight differences in both for all of us amateurs to see and explaining them. More side by side reviews would be appreciated.
TCL QM8 vs Sony X90L please. And thanks for this. Other reviewers drag their videos out for hours with useless banter and shout outs. You're the man Caleb. 🤙
Thanks for your inquiry. In November 2023 Walmart sold new Sony A90j 65 inch for $1508.00 delivered to our door. Manufacture date of June 2023, marked Mexico Only. 1st OLED. Very nice picture but crushes blacks. According to Walmart they sold over a thousand in 1 day.
Sony more accurate and the upscaling is spectaculare even better than samsung and lg, and believe me you'll be needing the upscaling since most of tge stuff are still in hd, tcl and hisense philips etc are way behind, plus the cpus are weak
Either one of these 2 tv's are a win win this year if you are looking for a great miniled tv. Both are value priced and both have lots of features most people want. 😊
My U8K has an amazing image and sound to boot, great at $1050 for 65". So far so good and no regrets! I do lower the black level to have a better black, makes a big difference to me at least. Appreciate the review!
@@eXeLeNeRgYFWIW I ended up paying $1000 + a warranty for a C2. I'm gonna use the display a lot and I think the nitpicks are gonna bother me on the U8K.
@@jcbx0128After you watch some great 4k Dolby Vision content and see that you paid only $850, you should be happy. Everyone has different expectations and a lot of that doesn't match your buying power. I worked in the home theater dept for many years and could not justify paying more for a Sony or Samsung mini led.
I REALLY wanted to purchase the TCL but for me, the lack of ASTC 3.0 is a deal breaker because of where I live and the number of 3.0 channels available.
@@Burritosarebetterthantacos I live in a metropolitan area where I can get something like 45 OTA channels but 'broadband' is only available via Starlink. Have you seen the cost for Starlink?.
Love my 75 U8H from last year. Absolutely competes with my LG C2, I actually prefer it in the family room since i never have to adjust picture settings for crushing blacks. It just performs for the whole family at all times. Plus it has a glossy screen, super slick, id imagine these two tvs are a little better, dont sleep on em.
@@Icipher4 they both look great in the dark. I play PC games, PS5, and watch TV on my 42" c2 and love it. It's my personal. The Hisense u8h is the big family TV. It also kicks ass at night for TV, hd content. You can't go wrong with either. Every now and then the Hisense would have a smidge of a glow on some content, but it's seriously not a big deal at all when it rarely happens, the mini led panel is great at negating this. If you want peace of mind go OLED. But if you're on a budget don't sleep on mini led u8h or the later models. They're very much identical in my opinion. As a bonus, I prefer Google tv vs LG UI. The Hisense is a beast with all those 4k/OLED demos on TH-cam lol. The 75 inch model has a glossy panel unlike the others I seen at Best buy, the Hisense best buy demo tvs were sadly promoted on demo imo vs the LG and sonys against the wall.
I ended up buying the Hisense U8K yesterday at Best Buy. Price was slightly better and I like the picture quality better. As to whether it is the right choice I guess only time will tell. I'll be really interested to see how it works with the bright window I have on the right-hand side of the room. Worst case I may have to cover it during the day. I guess time will tell. It was never an issue with my old Sharp 60" but it has a much more matte screen. I'll try to update my experience once I find numbers to set the tv up and see how it works for me.
Trust me the u8k is much better. Sure the tcl is brighter but no one needs that much brightness. On the other hand, the hisense has a much more detailed adjustment parameter for the colors, white balance and much more. Better blacks much less blooming. And colors as well. And the sound is much better. People could care less about wethe4 a remote wobbles or what legs it used or how thick when the difference is mm. They want picture quality, smooth motion and good sound and quick response
Yes, but what about the poor picture quality from the internal apps? Have there been any software updates to improve that? I’m not interested in an external box.
@NikoStark1 not true. Less Tham a week ago the 85" I was gonna buy was 1800 u8k and tcl still 2k. Now they're both 2k. Also the only thing the tcl has over the u8k is nits. But at what point do you really require that much brightness. Most actually set it around 50-70% to get inky black. And we all know the u8k has better blacks and color and that is something 90% of consumers prefer over brightness
im scared of all the comments of people claiming their tcl broke and either out of warranty or present warranty is a pain to deal with to the point of getting a new tv which is not tcl.
I like the ASTC 3.0 tuner is cool so we can finally get 1080p OTA, but I mostly prefer the Hisense U8K because it looks like the TCL QM8 was washing things out too much on the bright side and crushing some of the blacks. Hisense U8K seemed to maintain the in-between shades and details better even if it did not get us bright or as dark as the TCL QM8. The other kicker for me is that I have heard repeatedly that the built-in sound on the Hisense is much better and I would like to go without a sound bar -- which is supposedly a thing with the Hisense. The thing that is nagging at me is if I want the Sony X90L which is not as bright nor as good with the black levels, but supposedly has MUCH better processing -- especially with handling motion. Decisions. Decisions.
Thanks for this excellent comparison video. Personally speaking, I'm almost certain I'd rather spend a few more bucks and buy a QD-OLED or OLED TV instead of choosing between these two LCD models. Since 55" is the biggest screen I need I can save money on a "smaller" TV and invest those savings in better picture quality. I also don't need an especially bright TV because I can control the ambient light in my room. And even though I wouldn't base my final purchasing decision on the design of the remote control, I'll say that wobbly remote controls DO bother me (there are situations where I like to be able to operate the remote with one hand while it's resting on a flat surface - like a computer mouse - and wobbly remotes make that difficult).
Still waiting for a direct comparison between the q7 and qm8? Want to know if the qm8 is worth it. Will mostly use it for current Gen gaming and movies
I remember years ago when I walked into a Sam's Club and checked out a TCL and noted with approval that it was the only brand with a factory two -year warranty! I picked up a 43" 4k TCL in a pawn shop 4 years ago and it is still doing well to this day. Later on we rented a HiSense A6 and after two months it went back due to a number of issues and we purchased a Sony X90J which is absolutely fantastic after two minutes of fine-tuning. But I am all for competition and I can hardly wait for the review of the 85UX!
Hey HOnest truth. ME since my (2nd) last 60” Sharp Aquos Quatrum DIEd. D ONLY thing at time would match up was --HISENSE Flagship. I am NOT exaggerating. Cuz coming off from $4000 tv i have picky eyes. I went to BESTBUY loooking around all kinda sucked. Yes some 4 K more advanced in resolution but d Color just odd. Luckily -Stop d Fomo, n Quatum TV. Those 2 were giving HOnest reviews. I snatched Hisense n VERY VEYR VERY sceptical. But yeah ME was JUST BLOWN AWAY Floored. Same with my Husbnd. He was pro Sony. Same was i. I had PINK SONY laptop in the 2010s, n i have 2 sets sony ear buds $300 each. Like their TV just not d SAME as Sharp or HIsnse. Yes they are good, but color just different. I CAN BET-- a LOT of money on Caleb UX --Hisense review. He is going to put UX on -FILM Maker mode. Then BACKLIGHT (over all panel) brightness to left at 100% bloodily bright. Then “Brightness” (black level, front panel black adjustment) left at --50% N he will turn motion processing off. He will change color from WARM 1 or Warm 2 to like Cold or “standard” And he will Absolutely change --Color space from “native “ (natrual) to “AUTO” (which will make image look like shi) He has done that to last 4 Gen Hisense. So its predictable. Also this is exact the BS u are seeing it now when Hisense vs TCL.
Just bought the 75“ Sony X95L (2.489 Euros / Germany) and I‘m more than happy with it. Have been thinking about both U8K and QM8, but as they are not available here, it was an easy choice (don‘t like Samsung)… Great review, though - as always! 😊
Yeah, was just the right time to use Google 😉 …and Sony Cashback weeks also apply…. It’s definitely worth the extra amount - deepest blacks, excellent motion handling and bright enough for my living room….
I have the 75" U8K which has a different panel than the 65". Would like to see the 75 compared to the 65. I also have the 85" Sony X95K. The Hisense is excellent...terrific viewing angles. If Hisense made an 85" version I would likely have chosen it over the Sony. I really like the Sony as well. Got it half price as a last year model. The Sony 85" X95K uses a different panel compared to other sizes and is the best version. Wonder if that is the case with the U8K.
I have my own reason for favoring the U8H: According to another trusted testing site, the U8K & its sibling U7K are the only two eARC TVs on the market that support both (a) all four HDR formats (HDR10, HDR10+, DV, HLG) AND (b) passthru of all four lossless / uncompressed surround sound formats (Dolby TrueHD & MAT, both with or without Atmos; DTS-HD MA with or without DTS:X; and especially multichannel PCM 5.1 / 7.1). Sony TVs & 2023 LG OLEDs will do (b), but don't support HDR10+; one 2023 Samsung model also does (b) but omits DV. All the sets on the market before the U7K & U8K that passed (a) limited PCM to 2.0 channels and/or blocked DTS-HD MA, a huge annoyance to me. Getting past that is why I just ordered a U8K.
Hisense FTW to me because my area has plenty of ATSC 3.0 programming and with many broadcast stations implementing DRM controls which currently lock out aftermarket ATSC 3.0 tuners only TVs with built in tuners work with DRM.
Thanks, I was wondering if the Hisense ATSC 3 tuner would handle DRM. FWIW, Silicon Dust and several other external ATSC 3 tuners promise DRM support next month 9/2023. However, AFAIK, none of the external tuners support the supplemental features of ATSC 3. I really hate to buy a new tv w/o a ATSC 3 tuner.
@@DiscoveryOwners Same here. I know to most it isn't important but to me it is and if I upgrade, I want an upgraded ATSC 3 tuner onboard. Hopefully next year the TCL's will have the ATSC3.0 tuner hardware and will finally have the new MediaTek Pentonic chips on-board so that we can finally get 4K 120Hz 4:4:4 instead of 4:2:2 due to the older chip & processor limitations.
Coming from a Sony Mini LED 95K 85" I am very very impressed with the Hisense U8K 65" @1,099.99 is the best gaming and general purpose TV in North America.
Great comparison review. Wondering if you were to take into account warranties, historical reliability and software update stability as factors, which would be the better choice?
@@ninfreak95 and always buy from Bestbuy if you are in North America. Bad Hisense panels is a thing and the good ones are excellent. bestbuy swaps them no question asked. dont get it off online retailers
Choosing to stay at the 55 inch size for this season of my life (with 3 little kids), I recently purchased the TCL Q7. After spending a week with it, I just knew that it wasn’t right for me. Since the QM8 doesn’t come in 55”, I went with returning the Q7 and I purchased the U8K. So far I love it and it commands much more respect than the Q7 which was to be expected. And I definitely like the remote better than the TCL remote (Q7 and QM8 remotes look identical). It's smaller and fits better in the contour of your hand. The only issue I have so far is that there is no backlight on the U8K remote. Is it possible the 55” doesn't come with the backlit remote? Thanks for these excellent videos!
loved your review. I made my own comparison at a store and can't wait for my u8k to be delivered. Just a quick comment...I noticed your speaker set-up in the background, and would like to suggest that you move them at least 1 foot or more away from the wall. You'll notice a huge sound improvement.
No agree about Hisense remote, and something else. But Hisense remote adapt Perfectly with the oval shape of your palms (very ergonomic), you can even feel it, better than a square. And I love also, the fact that has a flat base. Ty Caleb 👍
Thank you for the reviews, and, in particular, this head to head comparison. Lots of information to digest but as you said, anybody would be pleased with either model. In the end I chose the Hisense for 3 reasons: 1. I have owned many TCL TVs already, and they are great. I wanted to experience another manfacturer's product to "spread the love". This is my first Hisense TV purchase. 2. The 75" U8K was $300 less than the 75" QM8 at my local Best Buy (both were on sale). That is a signicant difference. 3. The 2 year warranty of the Hisense vs the TCL's 1 year. This helps me sleep better knowing that for the next 2 years I don't have to worry about any issues that may arise. So far I've had the Hisense for a week and am extremely pleased. Although I'm confident that I would have enjoyed the TCL just as much, I have zero regrets. This truly is a fantastic model and dollar for dollar, has got to best the best bang for the buck TV right now. Thanks again. Keep the reviews coming and I'll keep watching.
Hi Caleb, can you please compare TCL 65" QM8 vs 75" QM8? The reason is 65" has only 1080 local dimming zones but 75" has 1920, which is like ~75% increase.
I think like the better menu UI on TCL, *ATSC 3.0 support on Hisense* is not a meaningful difference for 99.9% of people and it definitely shouldn’t be a DING, but I think you didn’t want to bash Hisense harder and make them angry that's why you gave them this win :) other than that, this is probably the best TV comparison I’ve ever watched. Thank you for yet another GREAT review, Caleb.
I’ve had my 65” QM8 for a couple of weeks now. It’s been an awesome experience so far. It was a much needed upgrade from the 60” 2010 Samsung Plasma that I had in my living room. I still love that plasma by the way. It found a new home in my basement. The difference in brightness between the two is epic to say the least.
I live where ATSC 3.0 is available so a big selling point. 3.0 content is limited at present. It really sounds like price at the moment of purchase could be the big swing factor. I have a Hisense 55U8G which doubles as my PC/game monitor and the 65U8H in my living room. The 65U8H is the first TV I've owned that doesn't require a soundbar. I did gild the lily and have my Jamo 5.1.2 speakers and a Denon 2700H hooked up to it. Nothing out for now that would tempt me to replace either TV.
I think what needs to also be considered is that the Hisense has a 55" version and TCL starts at 65" So for anyone who wants to purchase the QM8 it equates to a price difference of roughly $500 at current pricing. From what I witnessed viewing this comparison the TCL looked better to me but I wouldn't pay $500 more for it.
You have addressed an issue I've always wondered about, which is the image handling within built-in apps versus external sources. In my experience with sharp/hisense the picture is always when better when processing the signal through HDMI/usb/coaxial as opposed to built in apps.
I had $5000 Sharp. N 2 Hisense U8. I have Zero issues for my Hisense. But ppl kept walking to my house asking me “why is my Dad’s $3000 SONY look So much worse than your 4 yr old tV” . I could NOT answer them for longest time. I just assume ppl thought SONY Best , even tho I didnt have SONY TV. Lol (my parents had one n it looked so bad. I used to get confused why so expensive n bad). 😅
Really need the TCL QM8 85" vs Sony X93L comparison in order to know if the Sony premium is worth the cost difference. A lot of people including me are waiting to make a purchase decision. Unfortunately, many BB stores do not have the TCL QM8 on display.
i bought then cancelled the u8k and switched to the qm8 when i took everything into consideration. in the UK 65" u8k cost £1250 ($1575) while i picked up my qm8 65" for £990 ($1250) so saved a few hundred and happy with my choice. if i was in the states and could avail of the cheaper u8k which seems to be on offer, thatbwould have been my choice. either way I am absolutely blown away with the quality of my new telly. TCL has redefined what i thought of it as a brand
Excellent Review sir! I was actually out looking for a 65" TV for my Bar/Lounge area of my home. My criteria: Overall solid PQ, mostly in a darker environment, although there are windows in there. Sound Quality was a BIG factor as I do not want to use a soundbar as I am hanging it and want to limit extra mounting and additional peripherals and Best Bang for my Buck. Initially a VERY helpful and knowledgeable salesman at Best Buy (who ironically is from Japan and Sony certified), when I gave him my criteria, showed me the TCL. It was very impressive! In fact, I was prepared to buy it. Unfortunately they had none new in box for sale. Not even for ordering online. A testimony to the popularity of this TV. I need the TV now for a big NEW YEARS EVE party we are hosting at my home. So at the latest, would be 2 days from now. He then said, you know what, we have a really nice Hisense that is super comparable. Although they were not side by side, when I watched content on the U8K, my eyes were just as impressed and I have really good vision without need for glasses. Although we did not test out the sound quality, on paper, the U8K clearly wins in this important area for me. Plus, it was new in the box ready to go. So I bought it for $900 (same price as the QM8). I also read a detailed review on RTINGS that I have trusted for many years. They pointed out that the U8K was better out of the box without calibration. That is VERY appealing to me as well. They also have it edging out the TCL very slightly. Splitting hairs really. I do know a thing or two about TV.s and great PQ as I currently own a Sony BRAVIA XR X95K and a Epson 5050UB in my Home Theater showing on a 135" Silver Screen.
U8K has d BEST sound !!! I checked the 75” In store glossy ! Same viewing angle as OLED . D dude checking 75” A95K behind me for longest time jumped over asking 😮😮 excuse me what tv is that 😮lol 😅 he was like flipping head back n forth looking between Sony 75” A95K n U8K 75” I can’t explain ! That facial expression was gold. 😅 I had never see anyone flipping head to compare that fast it was 😅. N he finally JSUT came over to see the U8K 75” run around checking price n angles etc for longest time
Fair point about the QM8 having a alternate eARC HDMI port that isn't one of the two HDMI 2.1 ports, however you neglected to mention that their eARC port is only HDMI 2.0b. That means that anyone with capable receivers won't have lossless Dolby Atmos or other newer high end lossless codec available through that connection.
Yeah, not sure why people would complain about that? I'm happy the Hisense puts the eARC onto one of it's 2.1 HDMI cables as I can connect all my devices to an AVR then have a single cable going to the TV.
@@vashranoid it can be a factor especially for those with newer set ups that support Dolby Atmos and want the highest fidelity. Not that I have the $$$ for such things, but if we're going to award points for the remote and the ATSC tuner spec I would think that would be important.
@@tylerbrode740 you'd have to confirm based on the sound bar you have but with a full 48gbps 2.1 port Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Atmos, DTS-HD Master Audio, and DTS:X soundtracks can all be delivered in their true, lossless forms.
I have an 85" QM8 in my movie room. It just doesn't fill the space the way I want it to, so 98+ is what it is. The U8K is 2 grand less. That pretty much makes my mind up.
Personally I've always been a bit more of a TCL fanboy so I'd probably have a hard time going away from that between these 2 TVs. But one important advantage I would say that the Hisense has here is the ability to get a 55" model. I have a TCL 65" 65S555 that I got a for a great deal earlier this year in my living room, but if I was looking for a TV for any other place in my house, 55" would probably be about the max size I could get. I definitely think that hurts the QM8 for TCL. I'm also interested to see whether or not TCL would come out with a Roku version of this. My previous TV and current TV are both TCL Roku TV models and I've always liked the interface so that would make me pretty hesitant to try a new one like Google TV.
Hisense U8 series has--SIGNIFICANT Speakers. I cant explain. It’s like U expect that from at least $500+ sound bar setup. Long ago,,,we were looking to get NEW premium CAR, we got Infiniti V6 engine nice car. Came with 12 BOSE speakers. After that…when I went to CAR show…All I care was “what each car speaks sound like”. I cant o back to Shaky, snappy, chunky noise speakers. TCL Roku speaker can be very BUZZYING. Ppl dont realize HOW TV speaker MAKE the TV watching often more than pictures. U8K has VERY significant advantage with its SPEAKERS.I have tried BOSE 300 sound bar. Against 65” Hisense 2021 model i have at home. D BOSE 300 level sound like junk. Need BOSE 600 to match. That’s 2 yr old Gen. U8K will have full theatre experience with d sound. Especially for movie n steaming. 😅
@@birdtj82 I definitely could see how that could be a big difference-maker for a lot of people. Personally, I'm running my TV audio through a receiver to some really high quality speakers and a nice subwoofer so the TV's on board speakers don't really matter that much to me. But it's definitely a good piece of information to take note of.
I literally was at the store to purchase the Hisense today...and wait, the sales professional guided me to the TCL to compare it to. I gave pause on the purchase, stating I wanted to do more research on reviews. Just finished this EXCELLENT side-by-side review and will go back tomorrow to buy the TCL. I watch many of your videos, but the side-by-side comparisons of competitors in the same space makes so much sense. Thanks again for the review!
Dude get u8k seriously….. 165000: 1 Contrast. Qm8 110000:1 Contrast. 😊--OF course he makes sure ALL Hisense since 2022 look VERY funny like this. He has it set to --FILM Maker Mode. = Total Panel Brightness @100%. Black level NOT turn down at 50%. Severly elevated. Color Tempureture He Changed from natrual to -WARM 1-severly orange. 🍊 Then SHARPNESS--(u can check it in this review) he changed to “ Z.E.R.O” 😮😮😮 Then the motion smooth: OFF, Motion Clearneess: off. Noise reduction: off. Digitna Noise reduction: off . Active Contrast: off. Color space: Auto(a washed out film blue tint , from out of box Native natrual)……😮😮😮😮 Yeah in Fashion , we women call “lets do makeup”. In TV industry there is new word Reward”MAKE UNDER”. 😮
He does the same thing to Samsung S95C too. The S95C video the “Dr Strange” scene at like 18:05 of his S95C video in Digital Trends Video . Him:”look look at the shine (u mean blink he produced) on the wall”!!!!😮 n u look at the youtube Dr Strange clip there is NO blink. N the s95C looked so CORSE , cuz he puts them in the same--FILM Maker mode like U8K UX. Only Samsung n Hisense has that BAD-Film Maker mode. That Mode is made--for OLED. Not LED. If apply to LED its like -“Make a nerd guy do a woman’s make up job effect -Visual”
Also Hisense Flagship is Famous to be the Flagship that come in with _Meal Kit. Vs other brand _ pre seasoned meat. 🥩 U8K in store mode is set at: VIVID MODE! 🎉😂 extremely bright. 😂Brightness set at 100% 💯 on top of that-Vivid mode. Black level (Front panel) set at 50% factory default severely elevated , Color left at 50% factory default, NOT elevated. Same with “Contrast” (controls the Brightest white) not turned UP/down according to content. 50% Sharpness 50% Yeah the STore employees wont even know how to set it. 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉it only takes around 15-20 seconds to change setting to make it look clean crisp like oled . Its as easy as make Mac n Cheese. The same procedure tweak every show. TCL Qm8 has PRE SET up. Its very restrictive . But its pre Contrasted, PRE dimmed. So store Employee who doesnt even now to set Hisense they just assume thats like “pre set up” . Unlike d other brands, it has to be quick tweaked.
Caleb, your channel is my favorite to watch television rivews, I am a fan of the TCL brand, I am from Nicaragua (Central America) and I would love to have the TCL QM8! I was torturing myself between these two tv's...and then I did some digging into the x90l and saw it in stores...its amazing considering its not mini-LED. There are simply too many good options out there.
I actually have the opposite opinion on the x90. I saw it in stores and was shocked at how BAD it looked. Everything looked washed & the blooming was unbearable.
Just got a brand new 65” U8k, 799$. PC Richard, deal of the century. Absolutely loving it( coming from Hisense h9g which was already very good for HDR movies).
Its interesting. The Hisense seems to treat black in a way that is more akin to a front projector. Blacks just aren't as dark, but in some way the color looks more natural. All that said, I'm not sure if the raised black level would bother me. I'd probably go with the TCL.
It's more realistic to see different shades of black just as the human eye notices them. Consider alone the different shades of black clothes that you or someone you know may have. I was originally wowed by the differences in the TVs pictures, but after realizing that I won't be looking at the TVs side by side, I concluded the Hisense made more sense. Seeing the textures and details with the rodent on the rock was the selling point for me.
Just ordered the 85” QM8 from BB for $1,400. It’s now $100 less than the 75”. Decision made easier as the 85” U8K is showing out of stock. Looks like both brands made improvements in 2024 but not willing to spend the extra $ or wait for the inevitable price drops. Hoping I love it in my bright room!
These are two mid range TVs that punch way above their weight and offer picture quality that rival the big dawgs and even their OLED offerings. They're credible offerings for those looking for TVs for bright ambient light rooms.
I just went on a mini shopping spree based upon your intelligent reviews. I am getting my TCL Q7 QLED on Thursday and I'll pair it with a Vizio 2.1 soundbar.
I was about to get the TCL on Amazon when I noticed a warning on the page saying "This item is frequently returned" and it kind of scared me off. Anyone know what's going on?
Thanks for the review! I ended up getting the 75 inch U8K and it's fantastic! The viewing angles are great, and the blacks are ridiculous. The U8N just came out but it's substantially more right now. So went ahead and picked up the U8K. Thanks for all of the hard work that you do to help us.
Great review!! You had me at remote wobble! Really good comparison!! Love how the new space accommodates two large TVs so well! P. S. I think that the display album is the same album as the one you had in the reveal video? When you change it, wondering if you will please give us at least a frame or two of the cover not blurred so we can see it! I am trying to build my vinyl/jazz collection. Thanks!🥰
I realized I had forgotten to swap it out and swapped it out yesterday! My hope is to pick ones you can figure out even when blurred, but I’m always happy to tell folks what it is as well. Did you figure this one out?
@@Caleb_Denison Ha ha!! Hi Voltage/Hank Mobley! But I cheated and went back to your reveal video (A-Roll setup to find it where it wasn’t blurred)! I have been listening to certain jazz albums for years but am trying to increase my knowledge, so I don’t think I will recognize the albums if they are blurred. It sounds amazing with my new listening only system and listening to all kinds of, for me, new jazz on streaming. I went straight to Apple Music and found Hank Mobley. Love him!!!! I should thank you because you did actually help me by mentioning the 40N, which after researching to find out what it even was, I ended up buying it with some amazing new speakers. A whole new world for me!!!!!💖🥰
@@lordtardar4639 I used Quantum TVs settings. I had to join his TH-cam channel for $4.99 to see them. I used them on a 65” and 75” U8K. The TVs pictures look really good to me. He also has settings for gaming but I don’t game. I canceled the account when I was done.
9:26 do you think that the TCL is crushing blacks? TCL has a history of crushing blacks to give a better perception of contrast but it loses out on details and can swallow up specular highlights as well?
Excellent review. No TCL at 55 inches so it's the Hisense for me. I was thinking of staying my Google TV unit as the interface. Looks like a good idea.
Did u get one?????? ONCE u get U8K ,u will notice his Reviews of HIsense 4 yrs in a row are confusingly suspicious . Cuz at home all the Hisense visual are vibrant n crisp. In his reviews always pale n strange. LOOK out at 2024 videos what he will do :):) i am pretty sure the same thing. 😊

Thanks for yet another GREAT review! I see the QM8 98" is available to purchase now. Will you be testing it soon? Do you think it will be on sale in time for Labor Day? Black Friday? The Holidays? Looks awesome!
I’m VERY interested in the 98” QM8. Would love to see a review of this bad boy (and if you can compare it with any other 98” tvs, that would be a cool bonus). I really dig the new VS format that you can now do with the larger review space.
TCL 75’” from Best Buy for $1399 and it stood out in the store display as well as at home. I have it in a room with 20ft vaulted ceiling with southern windows so extremely sunlit area. Even with blinds open and direct sun I could still watch this screen with no reflection problem. Unbelievable clarity. Also just connect Apple TV OS box as it is a much better OS than the tvs have
Was waiting for this comparison video for what seems like forever. Thanks, But oh no no no, you can’t just throw out there that you would pick the X90L Sony if it was a 3 way competition without further explanation!!! Please tell us why!!!!!!
Thanks for a great video. I'm replacing a dead Vizio and I stream content/play a lot of FPS shooters where you can get clapped in half a second or less. The last thing I need is washed-out visuals degrading my experience, so I chose the U8K 👍
I just purchased the 85" QM8 and I absolutely love it!! I've been reading and watching all the reviews between these 2 TVs, and my personal preference had me lean towards the TCL, especially since I do have a bright livingroom. But for those talking about how the brightness can take away the details some, I've noticed dropping brightness down from 100 to 80 does help clear picture a little better. Also, I didn't have this problem, thankfully, but some people might have to play the TCL lottery regarding no defects from the manufacturer.
Maybe I missed it in another video, but I am hoping we get a DT review on the U7K sometime soon. Anyways, this was a great video and we appreciate all the work you put in for us!
It seems that the minor issues that the TCL has are more based in software than hardware, and as you stated the TCL has more of an upside with performance. Do you think these issues that the TCL have could be corrected overtime with software updates? Thanks, love your videos!
For me I'd go for the Hisense as it offers Dolby Vision gaming mode which the Sony X90L doesn't. I'd rather the TCL but it's not available in the UK for some reason :(
TCL has stepped up its game! I didn't get the QM8. I ended up getting the TCL 65 inch C655, and I am very happy. It shows very well and loud!! I think I will get the QM8 65 inch later and put the C655 in the bed room.
I returned my 85QM8 a couple of weeks ago and just ordered the 85U8K. I did love the picture quality most of the time, but Dolby Vision was not great during the day and the sometimes the procesor would struggle a bit. Did I make a mistake by doing so? I do feel like swapping 2300 dimming zones from the 85QM8 for 1300 85U8K sounds very significant. But I was hoping that the slightly better processor would make up for it. I mostly stream sports, movies and tv shows, but considering purchasing a PS5 for the holidays. What do you think? Im specting the 85U8K in 1 week. Im currently using the X90L, and while its amazing in SDR, it doesn't feel as punchy as the QM8 did. I was hoping the 85U8K would be a mix of both the X90L due to the slight up on the processor over the QM8, and more punch than the X90L 😂.
@1349LL for the purpose of upscaling, the order is X90L>U8K>Qm8 EOTF or not overbrightening the picture is the same, X90L >U8K>QM8. What is your primary use case? Since mine is streaming sports, shows, and movies, I kept the X90L. In my case, streaming 4k quality stuff and balck bars content was about 25% only. Therefore, the X90L was the best option of the 3 for about 75% of my content.
@@jrerobert thanks for the reply. This will be the main family room tv. So lots of TH-cam and Netflix for the kids, like 70% of the total usage. Then probably 20% watching 4k movies from a streaming service and 10% Xbox Series X. I’ve currently got an oled LG CX in that room. They’ve burned Minecraft hearts into my tv between TH-cam and playing games. So I’m spoiled with its contrast and have a feeling I’ll be sensitive to blooming at night, but I’ve got a den that also has a Sony OLED if I really want perfect blacks.
I just purchased the Sony X90CK 75" from Costco. I like everything about it except extreme off angle viewing gets a little washed out. The Costco version of this TV also comes with the better lighted remote and a free 5 year warranty. Love your informative videos, keep it up Caleb!
I bought the same Sony tv from Costco about 5 months ago. Was never really happy with picture always looked kinda washed out, not clear and crisp. Was thinking it had a bad panel and was going to contact Sony about it, the the last few days tv looks like it should, great picture. Not sure what happened here.
In my opinion it's really not that bad. The picture though is incredible. I bought the 65" A80k OLED first on prime day for a great deal. I had to send it back because it kept shutting itself off for no reason. This new TV, the 75" X90k is just as good as the OLED IMHO. Bigger TV, lower price, still great picture and good black levels.
I'm deciding between the 98" Sony X90L vs 98" TCL QM8. I will only use it for 4k blu ray HDR / Dolby Vision movies in a dark room (no sports, no gaming, no TH-cam, no streaming). Both are the same price. Which one would you recommend in this scenario?
you mention the H does better than TCL with "lower grade content" and does better upscaling. If one were to use the Nvidia Shield as the source (and it does the upscaling internally, would that even the playing field on picture quality?
The new space is perfect for comparing tvs right next to each other. I think you’re the only reviewer online that has such a great studio for comparisons. 👍
He didn't say if any of this was calibrated or not? If not declaring it being calibrated or not I assume it's probably not right. Weird to leave that out
I have bought 2 Hisense U8 Flagship tv back to back 2 yrs . So far amazing . Even survived a move . No quality issue . My friend got U7H 1 yr in , he loves his tv . 😅
The question for me is which rendering of color was more accurate. The champagne foil was "more gold" on the TCL, but was it more accurate. I think you left this out. surely you have some kind of monitor or super high end TV which could have answered that question.. Of course initially I thought "oh how nice the gold color is". But what if that's not really what's on Belsky's video (I've watched a bunch of his stuff). Same thing with the skin tone in the Matrix screenshot. The slightly flatter punch of the Hisense might be more accurate. But from your review I'll never know. I almost always value accuracy over punched up color. I used to be a photog so I'm used to the various color saturations on different Kodachrome films. But accuracy was always paramount.
Hey Caleb 👋 The youtube thumbnail and the title are flipped! This could confuse people who saw the thumbnail and made a flash judgment. Could you plz fix it?
Caleb, the Hisense has a Next Gen MediaTek processor. That's why it handles 4:4:4 Chroma content better with true 12-bit color support. As for gaming, the TCL (being last Gen MT processor) still cuts the resolution in half and isn't ideal for Dolby Vision gaming. But, the Hisense DOESN'T cut the resolution in half. So, Gamers should all buy the Hisense over the TCL in a heartbeat, no contest
I own the U8K, it is pretty bad a gaming, my experience is just a blurry mess, with very little in Game adjustments and settings, my suggestion is find another t.v. for gaming. That being said, I do love the picture quality for other content.
U8K uses the MT9618, which if playing games at 120fps, 144fps, or in Dolby Vision doesn't half the resolution. The TCL is a blurry mess at 120/144/DolbyVisionGaming. I know, I bought both and it's Nighy and Day. The 75 TCL is better for movies/cinema but the Hisense DESTROYS TCL with its gaming chip

Which hisense size do you own?
@@TrogdorPlays The models I own are several years old.
Same sentiments here,, got it last week and loving it
The U8K seems to do a better job with detail in dark scenes if we look at the scene in 14:52 , take a look at Mouse's shirt. It's practically not visible on the TCL, seems like they've artificially crushed the blacks and lifted the brightness to portray a higher contrast ratio.
TCL is causing severe black crush to obtain the contrast levels it does. It's too much a sacrifice imo.
Do you still like it? Do you watch sports at all and how the u8k performs with that? Trying to decide on these two sets 75 inch for mine.
@@xcloudx_ Yep, no regrets at all. I imagine I would have felt the same way about the TCL in the end, since they are so similar. I watch football mainly, but have watched some MLB on it. I was very happy with the pic during sports.
@@reverendsaul awesome good to hear! I watch football mostly and some nascar. Looks like I’ll get the u8k then since I use TH-cam TV as well.

Between your u8h and c2, what looks better for HDR content in the dark?

@@NikoStark1 shoot, even rtings after doing a full calibration test rated the u8k higher than the qm8
@NikoStark1 another thing the u8k has over the tcl is the ability to fine tune the color gamma and white balance unlike tcl

I've got the very first TCL 6 Series, feeling like it's Day 1 over here. They must be buying Insignia instead LOL.
Decisions. Decisions.
Id get x90l. My 10 year old Sony still looks great.
Samsung don’t settle for less
Q7 has horrible motion processing I found. Both of the tvs in the review are better. 😊

I CAN BET-- a LOT of money on Caleb UX --Hisense review.
He is going to put UX on -FILM Maker mode.
Then BACKLIGHT (over all panel) brightness to left at 100% bloodily bright.
Then “Brightness” (black level, front panel black adjustment) left at --50%
N he will turn motion processing off.
He will change color from WARM 1 or Warm 2 to like Cold or “standard”
And he will Absolutely change --Color space from “native “ (natrual) to “AUTO” (which will make image look like shi)
He has done that to last 4 Gen Hisense. So its predictable. Also this is exact the BS u are seeing it now when Hisense vs TCL.

ATSC 3.0 is under valued, it's awesome. Amazing how 1080p looks so much better than 1080i. Kudos to Hisense for going all in on ATSC 3.0
Im sure the plex tv app will tell a different story!!
Hisense always gets better reliability reviews and has a two year warranty.
but zero software update. i have my hisense and i did not get any software updates since i bought it @@ninfreak95

QM8 85" owner reporting in. Love the tv!
loved your review. I made my own comparison at a store and can't wait for my u8k to be delivered. Just a quick comment...I noticed your speaker set-up in the background, and would like to suggest that you move them at least 1 foot or more away from the wall. You'll notice a huge sound improvement.
Can you do a video comparing the X90L to either TV also.
No agree about Hisense remote, and something else. But Hisense remote adapt Perfectly with the oval shape of your palms (very ergonomic), you can even feel it, better than a square. And I love also, the fact that has a flat base. Ty Caleb 👍
Sony X90L, Hisense U8K and TCL QM8 in the size 85 inch are all almost the same price. I think we do need to compare these against the Sony
Spread the love? 😂
Hi Caleb, can you please compare TCL 65" QM8 vs 75" QM8? The reason is 65" has only 1080 local dimming zones but 75" has 1920, which is like ~75% increase.
Caleb, once again you slayed this review comparison!
Really enjoy your content! Super informative while also digestible. I appreciate the detailed stuff like the Nit Nerd section, so please don't stop!
Epic? Wow.
I think what needs to also be considered is that the Hisense has a 55" version and TCL starts at 65"
So for anyone who wants to purchase the QM8 it equates to a price difference of roughly $500 at current pricing.
I love my Sony, its about to turn 6 in Feb 2024. Great reliability.
i bought then cancelled the u8k and switched to the qm8 when i took everything into consideration. in the UK 65" u8k cost £1250 ($1575) while i picked up my qm8 65" for £990 ($1250) so saved a few hundred and happy with my choice.
if i was in the states and could avail of the cheaper u8k which seems to be on offer, thatbwould have been my choice. either way I am absolutely blown away with the quality of my new telly. TCL has redefined what i thought of it as a brand
For $300 cheaper I grabbed the u8k.. love it so far
I checked the 75”

@@johnmghanksthanks for that information, so if I have a Dolby Atmos sound bar I'd have to use one of the HDMI 2.1s to use it fully?
@@tylerbrode740 you'd have to confirm based on the sound bar you have but with a full 48gbps 2.1 port Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Atmos, DTS-HD Master Audio, and DTS:X soundtracks can all be delivered in their true, lossless forms.
I have an 85" QM8 in my movie room. It just doesn't fill the space the way I want it to, so 98+ is what it is. The U8K is 2 grand less. That pretty much makes my mind up.
If it’s this close, then go with the Hisense since it’s $250 cheaper
Ive been using a Hisense the past few years and its been great for the price. Nothing to complain about.

I just went on a mini shopping spree based upon your intelligent reviews. I am getting my TCL Q7 QLED on Thursday and I'll pair it with a Vizio 2.1 soundbar.

I'm confused. The U8k and the U8N are not the same TV? Is the sole difference simply the year, make, and model?
I’m VERY interested in the 98” QM8. Would love to see a review of this bad boy (and if you can compare it with any other 98” tvs, that would be a cool bonus). I really dig the new VS format that you can now do with the larger review space.

You could also leave brightness at 100 and up the gamma one or two notches instead. :)

I need to know this as well, if TCL has made any statements on the matter.
When can we expect Sony X95L review?
Can we have a comparison between X95L and QM8?
For me I'd go for the Hisense as it offers Dolby Vision gaming mode which the Sony X90L doesn't. I'd rather the TCL but it's not available in the UK for some reason :(
@abnormaln8 There is a TV C845 already, is there a difference between that and the C845K?
Would love to hear your thoughts on both. Which do you feel is better? I ordered a u8k but second guessing not getting the qm8.
@1349LL for the purpose of upscaling, the order is X90L>U8K>Qm8
EOTF or not overbrightening the picture is the same, X90L >U8K>QM8.
I was worried about the off angle viewing on the full array led Sonys too… how bad is it exactly?
Would love someone to answer this question!
I cannot wait for the Nakamichi dragon and the Sonos arc. I was lucky enough to order a Nakamichi dragon that hopefully I’ll receive it in October.
I heard Hisense is only an 8-bit panel. Does this mean the TCL is better for colors? If not, why?
U8K uses the MT9618, which if playing games at 120fps, 144fps, or in Dolby Vision doesn't half the resolution. The TCL is a blurry mess at 120/144/DolbyVisionGaming. I know, I bought both and it's Nighy and Day. The 75 TCL is better for movies/cinema but the Hisense DESTROYS TCL with its gaming chip
Thinking about getting the U8. Did Hisence build a better tv set this year?
They Always built great TV set. The Bad reputation came from ppl buying $200-340 Hisense Roku TV that they sell at Walmart.
Hisense Android/google panel are completely manufactured in Hisense Own Facility in Mexico (i heard they Build new facility there)
I have spent $2400 for 2 Panels so far, love them. 2yr in n 3yr in. Their Flagship panels feel like $3000 tV in person :)
@birdtj82 so basically the budget ones are riddled with problems? Hate to drop 1000$ on a lemon
@@markp.4081 well u don’t have to get it if u worry. I have gotten $2400 Hisense (2 panels ) 1.9 2.9 yr later feeling 😃 .
Bestbuy employees exposed it last 3-4 yrs . They hate Hisense TCL. Bestbuy managements made sure Tv sales ppl tight lip about SONY issues . If u ask Hisense Flagship, they r instructed to sag “they have quality issues !” So d a few ppl echo chamber . If anyone had luck get bad panel , or just tv damaged during shipping or own mal handling during buying/set up . They just blame Hisense !
@@markp.4081 ps Hisense BAD rap all came from Ppl whiny want cake eat it too . They buy $250 Roku, abuse it . Break down n trash it .
Hisense Google/Android tv only been in USA 🇺🇸 for like 3-4 years . Those r premium . Diff parts , diff build , quality .
