So did you screw that plug in all the way? Cus I heard u say only give it like 5 or 6 turns? I just wanna make sure I do this right cus my transmission is already giving me problems
Yep. No thermostat means oil always circulates. In the winter, the ATF will never get up to operating temperature. That's almost as bad as the oil being cooked and overheated. Cold oil is too thick. Shifts will be harsh on components, pressures will be high and flow will be reduced so you lose lubrication at high RPM, additives don't work properly at colder temps, and moisture will accumulate in the fluid because it never gets hot enough to evaporate out of the breather vent. You really need to get a sweet spot. 190*F is usually the operating temperature of a transmission. Keeping it under 200*F is what's important. When you go over 200*F the fluid suffers degradation at an accelerated rate. For every 10*F above that, the fluid life is approximately cut in half. Heat is the enemy, but you need some heat to work correctly. 175-180* is a good target.
I attempted the mod this afternoon and the bottom line leaked over a quart of fluid out and still didn’t stop so I put the line back on and went to the parts store for a quart of fluid. Any trick to this? Does my truck need to sit overnight and cool down? It sat for about an hour and a half before I started.

I did what u did tho I see it blocks off the other port tho for the other trans line is that koo? I blow thru it and only have the side that goes into the trans and into the cooler line clear since the plug block the other 2 ports. I just didn't understand on puting the plug blocks the other port from the return side to the cooler to the trans. Cause u have inlet and outlet on the trans so if u block the port with 1/4 plug how is the fluid returning back to the trans if its block off with that port. Cause I blocked it off with the plug as u did and only have pass thru from 1 port witch is from the trans to the cooler. So that mean the other trans line from trans to cooler isnt being used?
the plug blocks the port that allows trans fluid to bypass the trans cooler. putting in a plug allows fluid to flow to the trans cooler all the time. taking out the spring and thermostat allows for maximum flow to the cooler
There’s another video out there that shows turning the thermostat plunger upside down instead of gutting it like your video shows.....does that procedure produce the same results as yours? Lower temps ?
I just bought a 2014 sierra 1500 and within a week, I had a shop install a mishimoto cooler and deleted the thermostat. I dont tow, but I do live in mountains and my trans temp doesnt get past 125° F
Will I get the same results if I only have the stock transmission cooler/ AC condenser combo, or does this only work with supplemental transmission coolers?
If you're having an issue with trans temp getting too hot and the thermostat is operating properly, wouldnt you think your problem is heat rejection at the trans cooler and not the tstat?
Your not understanding. The setpoint of the OEM thermo is to hot. 192F. It IS operating the way GM says too. Thats too hot, 192F for long life of a transmission.
It’s actually 2014 and newer. The thermostat in the block as shown in the video, redirects the trans fluid back into the transmission, bypassing the oem cooler unit. ( above the condenser) Until fluid level is above 180-190 degreees. A Tru cool is just a larger oil cooler. Not doing this mod and adding a trucool will be a waste of time, as trans temps will still be above 190

I live and drive at 6000 feet in CO can regularly have temps at 199 - 210 on long drives. I'm thinking about doing this but and worried that the cold temps in the winter may cause viscosity issues. What do you all think? Also, how the heck would you "flip" it? the Thermostat only mounts one way. Are ya'll talking about the pin inside?
I wouldn’t worry about viscosity. Considering 2500 trucks don’t have trans thermostats. There are 2 ways to do with mod. 1st is to install a plug like shown in the video. 2nd is to flip the thermostat. I made a video that shows how to do that here. m.th-cam.com/video/RmOg0rZlNLY/w-d-xo.html

My truck is a 2014 v6 dont know what trans it has but runs high, can I do this to it too? I assume it’s the same trans
Do transmission shops do this..and how much would they charge?..anyone know?
When you put the "plug" back in is it reassembled? Why do we take it apart to take the small spring out in the beginning?
the plug blocks the port that allows trans fluid to bypass the trans cooler. putting in a plug allows fluid to flow to the trans cooler all the time. taking out the spring and thermostat allows for maximum flow to the cooler
Does 2020 have same tranny?.. and you just continuously used the cooler by doing this right?
Don’t understand how to get the clips off even if mine has any it definitely doesn’t have the 10mm an plate
There’s another video out there that shows turning the thermostat plunger upside down instead of gutting it like your video shows.....does that procedure produce the same results as yours?
Lower temps ?
It's better to flip the thermostat. "Easier"
You have a link for this ?

This will show the flip of the thermostat plunger
I have a 2011 suburban with that trassmision and i dont see that tesmostat why???
Did you have to drain the fluid
Nope. The outlets for the cooler is above the level in the pan.
Yes
If you're having an issue with trans temp getting too hot and the thermostat is operating properly, wouldnt you think your problem is heat rejection at the trans cooler and not the tstat?
Your not understanding. The setpoint of the OEM thermo is to hot. 192F. It IS operating the way GM says too. Thats too hot, 192F for long life of a transmission.
Does this mod void the warrentee?
can you use the flip rather than drilling and plugging?
I used the flip instead of the drilling a plugging and haven’t had any issues to note of. It’s been a little over 2 years now
Is there a way to have a tune to delete the thermostat
So this needs to be done in order to add a trucool? I heard something about having to bypass the thermostat on the 2015 and newer.
Aaron Hines awesome thanks man. I live in south Texas and have bolt ons on my 15 Silverado and the Tranny has been getting to 190 some days depending on my driving.
Can I do this to my 2018 chevy silverado 4.3 v6 it can get up to 270 degrees then it shifts like shit
Holy shit that's a cooked transmission buddy
Did this affect the overdrive?
No not at all
Where do you get the 1/4 plug
Any our parts store will have one. All parts and tools in description.

Is this for trucks only with the ( external ) extra trans cooler? I have only one trans cooler, the one going through the radiator
No this is all 14-18 1500 trucks. You also have a cooler that is apart of the ac condensor
Aaron Hines a trans colt that is part of the A/C condenser? What do you mean? I've never seen anything like that in the 27 other vehicles I've owned in the past 23 years.
many vehicles have this deisgn. ford started in 2005, chrysler jeep in 07. here is the condensor for your truck, you can see the upper portion has 2 fitting for trans cooler lines. www.amazon.com/MYSMOT-Condenser-Escalade-Silverado-2014-2016/dp/B07RJQJK85/ref=sr_1_2_sspa?keywords=2014+condensor+silverado&qid=1562856604&replacementKeywords=condensor&s=gateway&sr=8-2-spons&vehicle=2014-47-491------------&vehicleName=2014+Chevrolet+Silverado+1500&psc=1
Is this the same procedure for a 2011 sierra with 6L80e?
They dont have that tesmostat
Im doing this. My STOCK 2017 5.3 silverado is going to be on its 3rd trans. Going to build it with every aftermarket part i can find..
Do you know the part number of these exact lines? I have the same ones but no parts store can find the same ones. Or did Gma&Gpa change these at some point to an upgraded line set ?
Yes they did change the lines to a new part number. Part numbers are in the description
Had the dealer install the 70c block... still not cold enough for my liking.
Would this be the same on a 4l60e
No thermostat on it
Did this turn on your engine check light??
no, the light will not turn on for this
Thanks for the video
Mine looks a little different. It doesn’t have the keeper pins on it instead it has a solid mount over the lines. Is it the same concept still
Yes, it appears gm changed the design on the lines. I’ve installed a new line assemblies and the new lines come in that style.
All is good I did mine and I’m seeing 30-40 degrees cooler. Thanks a lot I’ve got a couple buddies that want me to do there’s now
Mine is staying around 130 is okay
How do you get the lines off of the thermostat block?
I have what sounds like electrical noise turning on and off around the transmission. Any guess what it could be
Wow my 2016 4.3 only gets up to 205 when towing and have made no mods.
Do they have a thermostat that opens at 150 instead of deleting it?
No they do not
@@AaronHinesAuto as of May 2022 GM revised the trans. cooler bypass to open at 158°F
I have done dozens both ways. Flip works good but in extreme conditions the plug works best
Ah it never ceases to amaze me, the amount if good will in people. You sir have earned a subscription.
Great question, how’s that going up at those elevations, I know I70 can be a beast on a vehicle? Any improvements with the modification?
I made this modification and have no complaints
this fit 2017 4.3 v6 been experiencing 205 206 30 min drive with AC on 80 deg summer weather
10-4 , thanks bud
Hello Aaron,as always, good video! Quick question, would you recommend doing this to a Silverado regardless of towing often or not? And what is the point of the thermostat delete? Is it to basically keep the transmission cool at all times? Thanks in advance, brother. I dig these videos.
The thermostat gets stuck and cooks your tranny before you know somethings even wrong your tranny is junk
COOLER IS BETTER.
Heat is your transmissions worse nightmare!
Gm now has a service bulletin on this, for $60 they have a new housing that the thermostat opens at 140 degrees instead of 190
U know part number?
Is this legit?
Yes I do those all the time on the 6l80 or anything with the same design, they have been redesigned To open at 70'.
So how has this helped the trans? See it’s an older video.
My 2017 Silverado 1500 has gone all the way to 192-203 any advice?
I wouldn't too much..I just bought a 2014 gmc sierra 1500 and as soon. as I bought it I took it to a shop and had all the fluids changed and it still runs up to 190° if you want to really drop those temps, get a mishimoto cooler installed. About $600 parts and labor.
@@UGHH_PPL yeah I already ordered one
i have a 2018 silverado and there is no clips for trany line and have not been able to determine if lines come differently
Wilbur Floyd the 18s have the 8 speed the block looks a little different but the insides are the same concept just did this on my 18 with the 8 speed works perfect
Hello Arron I’m here in phx Az can I pay you to do this?
Hey man, thanks for the info. Out of the few videos out there on this, you sound like the only one that has done this multiple times. I can’t get my thermostat out. The snap ring gave me a little bit of trouble but I got it eventually. Have you ever encountered this? If so, what did you do? I’ve tried wd40 and brake fluid so far. I’m tempted to pry it out through the fluid lines but seems sketchy.. Any suggestions would be much appreciated, thanks.
Try hiting the sides with like a hammer but not hard just to pop it ofg
I've got a 2016 Silverado with the 6L80 transmission and yesterday the transmission started acting up and won't shift higher than 4th gear, plus it's reving a lot higher before shifting. I've only got 73000 miles on this truck and I've done a pan drop and filter/fluid change at 50000 miles and the fluid level is perfect. I am at a loss to what the issue is
This mod will fix your problem
Torque converter going out
