this is a couple of possible fixes for a Chevy 1500 6L80 6L90 transmission overheating we have another video for overheating on the 2500 HD series with no thermostat

GM also makes an updated thermostat that opens at a lower temperature if you are interested in keeping your truck stock.
I installed this kit in mine about a year and a half ago and it has made a big difference in my truck and luckily, I haven't had any issues with my transmission other than the high temps before I installed this kit but as I said it hasn't run high since I installed it. I already decided if and when this transmission does go out, I will install the sonnax upgraded kit into it and also a 6L90 torque converter which many say makes the 6L80 trans almost bullet proof if you take care of it and do normal service on it. I have seen a few guys that said after doing the upgrades to the trans it stands up to towing and being beat on very well which I need due to me using it on the farm pulling trailers and equipment and such.
Side note: the line retaining bracket bolt hole isn't centered, if you can't get the bolt to line up try flipping it around.

My son bought a new 19 2500 with the Duramax & Allison tranny. It's completely stock and the highest temp he has seen was about 165 and that was towing 20K. That tells me that his thermostat is a different one, probably close to 140 or so. Now my 14 Silverado 1500 with the 4.6 has always run 198 when at temp and I have seen it rise to 214 after a highway run when I slow down. Looking to get the Superior done very soon.

@@alonsoduran7759 I did and it's a lot cooler. The highest I have seen it was around 170 which is a far cry from over 200.

@@alonsoduran7759 Make sure you keep up with the fluid changes too and use full synthetic fluid.
I haul GM parts to GM dealers….. every dealer gets one or two of the these entire assemblies everyday. The block and hoses comes as an assembly. I thought these pieces were A/C parts and then on my hand held it said “trans oil tube”…. Can’t haul enough transmissions in and out of the dealerships right now.
Previous owner must of done this because my trans always runs 130-135 in the summer. The previous owner was my dad. He was an engineer and loved to perform maintenance on pretty much anything. He taught me a lot of good habits that I have been teaching my kids. My pops taught me how to fix anything regardless of my knowledge of it. Miss him everyday because I know I missed out of many more lessons. 😢

no the thermostat was not introduced until 2013 there is an upgrade on the fluid, blue label Mobil One atf LV HP
I did the delete on a 2021 Chevy Silverado now I run about 145 in the summer and about 120 in the winter and if I need to check fluid I just put it in gear and hold the brake and it’ll get right up to 135
It was about 180/185
Mine still running 170. You must not live where it's hot
I found this video last year, after I felt my tranny was running too hot towing. Before this install, my tranny oil would run at 210-220 degrees regular driving. I live in the hot south, flat roads. I installed the Superior kit, and a small 12x15 trans fluid cooler up front. After the install I would run at 135-145 degrees. Towing the same trailer, huge difference. Most notable was going over Wolf Creek Pass in CO. Before the install I'd hit 245 degrees after nine miles uphill to 10,800 feet. I would stop and let it cool. After the install, same trailer, same road, same weather. I peaked at 183.

Why isn't there one for 2007 to 2013 SUVs that have 6L80s? After rebuild beefier parts and TQ it's running hotter than normal .. 225 at some points... Or do those models only have the oil cooler in front of the radiator?
you should try to back flush the cooler at the radiator force cleaner from the top line connection out thru the bottom line connection because when a transmission has a torque converter coming a part it goes thru the cooler before it goes thru the filter
@@codemansauto208 it only does it between 1mph to 40 mph those 3 gears. After it shifts above 40 it starts to cool down. They think the valve body is bad on those solenoids. Cus it bucks on down shifting b4 full stop at 10mph . And even though old trans had 200k + on it my truck never bucked or kicked. Goes back in Tuesday for the techm replacement. If that takes care of everything. I'ma add a mishimoto cooler up front get rid of that small stock auxiliary trans cooler
I know I have 2016 Chevy 2500 hd when my transmission gets 200 degrees 6th gear will go away if I let it cool down it shifts like new one until it warms up and I can drive it 75miles but it will only go up to 5th gear until transmission cools down
Installed this and my temp went up to 202,😡 second day it was at 158❤️, third day 198!😡 not impressed!

Superior looks like a failed check valve ready to happen.
Delete is gone no issues. So If cavitation happens. Do Not just jump in throw on the floor.
yes these things can be hard to get apart or get the snap ring out and i have used the delete and the superior and have seen no difference in the transmission temp or engagement so the only difference I can see is PRICE
I was wondering if the 2022 chevy sliverado 1500 4wd 6.2L trail boss still has this same problem? I noticed my transmission temp is running average of 164 F not pulling anything. Is that too hot?

So I crawled under my pickup this afternoon just to get situated on what I was going to be taking on and it looks as if mine doesn't have that block, but is a much smaller casing that is narrow with just the lines coming out of it. Do they make these without the thermostat unit and just allow the fluid to run straight through? I bought the pickup used at the end of February, so I'm just getting into really looking things over since the snow's started to melt.
yes this is why its so confusing and WHY did they only put this on some of the vehicle and not all if it was that important to bring the heat up to operating temp faster

What is a normal or safe temperature for a transmission
Is this recommended for certain locations with higher temperature climates? I could understand if you live in Arizona doing this will drastically help.
I wish I had found this earlier. I just paid $6k for a new torque converter and other parts. If I had known, it would have cost me less than $100.

I feel so fucking sad, I just bought a 2019 silverado with 72k miles 3 months ago and the torque converter has started slipping and the unloaded temps just me in the truck no trailer are hitting 210°f… I don’t have $6k if this trans goes out idk what I’m gonna do, I can’t afford that. I feel so fucking duped having just bought this truck not even a full 3 months ago. I should have got a warranty, but thinking oh it’s a new truck it shouldn’t have any problems for another 100k miles… boy was I wrong.

@@Lstutta it’s at 95k now, I put the transmission thermostat bypass in and that’s helped bring the temps down a little, I’m getting ready to add a transmission cooler to it too. I might end up having a new torque converter put in it before it fully goes out because I’ve heard once they go out they take the whole transmission out so the then because they send broken shards through the gear box. But even with the thermostat bypass this thing gets HOT. I’ve gotten it up to 228° and I just had to stop put it in neutral and let it cool itself off

I have a 2017 Silverado 1500 z71 living in SoCal.
Dealership just replaced the tranny from a failed torque converter. Must have been the heating issues.
They did not change the TBV valve.
I checked and I have the updated coolant lines that does not have the cir-clips.
That being said, Updated GM option is better over the Superior Solutions?
I like both options at this point.
Any downsides to The superior solitons with being too cold?

Thats what we did, maybe take it easy for a few miles but they heat up fast.
So ok i get whats going on here ok..my question is i have a 2017 Silverado with the V6 i believe the lines hook up to the water radiator and not a cooler ?? If water temp is at say 195 ex .so is your tranny temp..so my question is do you do a delete on a V6 or not .seen others say not to the tranny runs hotter??? True or not true?
Know of anywhere a guy can buy a block with the superior hardware already installed so he could just swap them out and not have to do the tear down and rebuild?
i dont know of anyone that sells them that way, but your may try your local Transmission shop to see if they can build one for you, this bypass takes less then an hour to install so it should be a quick in and out for a transmission tech
Ordered the sure cool kit and going to give it a shot. Looks like I have a 6L90 in my 2016 2500HD GMC. Has the overheating issue been seem more in the 6l80, or is an issue across the board for both? I'm hoping the tear down and install is similar to what you show on the 6L90. Part is supposed to be here by Friday, hoping to have it pulled apart and reinstalled by Saturday evening.
My don’t have the spring or anything inside just that one thing took off the transmission is that normal or no because last 2 years I didn’t have any issues till last week trans temp is about 210
Thanks for a great video. I put a Superior in my 2018 early on. I believe the high temps are why the torque converters are failing early.
And using Mobil LV fluid really helps the shifting characteristics. Along with other "improvements" (I mean correcting problems built in at the factory) a Chevy truck owner should do if you want make your truck last for the long run.
Another reason the torque converters are failing (in my opinion) is, the tune from GM is making the converter work way to hard, I use HP Tuners to basically stop the TCC from working its ass off and destroying the converter.

I have been debating upgrading my block with the new lower temp thermostat from GM or the surecool mod.
Wondering your thoughts. I understand the idea behind the mod (preventing the possibility of the tstat locking up and preventing the fluid from passing through the cooler) but I’m wondering if the constant lower temps can also cause issues. I would think it will take the transmission much longer to warm up to operating temp from a cold start in the morning.
I live in Canada and winters can get pretty cold.
What is optimal operating temp for my 6L80? I’ve read around 175F.
With the surecool mod I’ve read a lot of people saying there temps don’t get above 130. That seems problematic?
Also what’s your thoughts on the exhaust pipe running right underneath the trans pan. Seems like a dumb idea by GM and a good way to heat up the trans fluid. Should be a heat shield at least. Maybe it would help temps from rising so high?
You say you like surecool better in this video because of pressure regulation but in a newer video you talk about using the transco delete.
What is your best advice now for me in my situation.

This does work, I bought a brand new 2018 Chevy Silverado, and I replaced mine 6 months later, and it runs about 40° cooler and I'm in the desert southwest.

My transmission starts slipping at about 180 degrees.. it's ran that got since I got the truck but think that might be the problem?
top cap is impossible to remove once corroded mine is 2017 hard to remove please be weary of this you’ll be stuck until you get a new valve
sorry you had an issue with removing the cap, I should had mentioned that if corroded put heat around the cap to melt the seal, this helps may be another video coming soon to show this process

You should have flushed out the old fluid too. That make sure you got new fluids replaced inside the cooling lines.

I install the bypass valve kit today 10-6-23 i drive for maybe 1 hour street and highway the high temp was 207, dealer did the transmission flush back in April.. i need some help .. any ideas please

Delayed engagement have nothing to do with the thermostat, the circuit is very simple, torque converter is always full of fluid it is responsible for creating the pressure of the line, one line is out the other is in to drain in the pan

Okay, what is the temp the transmission should be at? I did the superior solutions and it works great on the HWY. Sometimes it gets back up to 190° but I went up to big bear mountain here in CA and it got up to 230°
At what temp should I be concerned?
Mine regular highway driving at night shot up to 235⁰ and shifting was bad and leaving from a stop it would act like it was slipping

@@alextrujillo8658 yes I did it over this past weekend being I work out of town and package arrived while working of course. But on the drive here at night with temps about 30⁰ outside the trans temp stayed around 127⁰ and never passed 133⁰(while at a stop) During the day it got to 136 so I'm super happy with it and was really easy to install. Even going through the mountain where temps would go up to 211⁰ it stayed steady in the 125⁰ range
the temp shouldnt get above the operating temp of the engine, you might try a back flush on your trans cooler lines to make sure that your torque converter is not coming apart and stopping up your transmission cooler system, i do have another video on a 2500HD series that shows what can happen if the converter fails.
this 2500 was acting similar to what your describing
and dont rule out that you might be getting a bad reading from your transmission temp sensor, a transmission shop should have a way to test the fluid temp
Sometimes we overlooked the “proper oil levels”. And the right fluid recommended. If it says Dexron VI, you put Dex VI, not V, not III. A few liters high or low can really make a big differences, with newer trucks, are just too sensitive.

I deleted mine a few weeks ago.it always ran at 194 degrees.it hasn't gotten over 138 degrees so far.truck is a 2016 Silverado and has 74,000 miles on it.wanted to prolong the life of the trans.

@@Mikey-wf9py mine was easy to do.hardest part was getting the c clip out of the top.mine had a lite bit of corrosion.make sure you do it when the trans is cold so not as much fluid will come out.

@@Mikey-wf9py I have a superchips tuner to disable the afm.as soon as I got the truck I turned the afm off.been disabled since my truck has had 55,000 miles.i also changed tire height and gear ratio with the tuner.
@@seantylerwray Nice yeah I have a AFM disabler as of right now but I have a cat back exhaust in a I'm ordering a cold air intake and then I'm taking it to a local shop to get Dino tuned He's going to shut off the speed limiter the AFM and tune the transmission in the motor

Just let it warm up for a couple minutes and check it.
I just had this installed in my 2015 gmc crew cab 4x4 with the 6l80, but it is running hotter not cooler i used the shift tech product part# stl010. It has gone all the way up to 217, and is back down to 189. Is it possible that the shop put the spring in backwards and that is what is causing this problem? Help
217 degrees are not to be worried. Besides temp went back down. And with this part installation. Do you really have to go to the shop?
Correct me if I'm missing something, but this mod will not decrease your transmission fluid temperature when it is under high stress. The mod simply creates a situation identical to that of having the thermostat wide open. Your tranny will run cooler under general conditions. The main benefit is that it eliminates the possibility of the thermostat sticking open and preventing the cooler from getting flow.

I believe you are correct - the temp under heavy sustained load will be the same. Simple thermodynamics.

@@Stop_the_cap311 140* is about the hottest it gets in 80* temps. After running on the freeway on a 90* day then hitting stop and go it may go up to 160* but I can't really remember

dont use the fluid that is recommended in the owners manual, that fluid blend has been updated

Remove the guts, tap the internal passage for a pipe plug, install the plug. That will force the fluid through the cooler at all times. Trans will then run around 150-155 deg during normal driving instead of 200.
@@keithgoff3272 this is way cheaper options. But you know, consequences of going too cheap can be a financial disaster of more costly repairs.
@Codemans auto I have seen a video where the guy takes it all apart and basically puts the spring above the block off and this does the same thing as the delete kit.

2008-2013 did not have the block and are the most efficient cooler systems and even some 2014 and up dont have the block. most rebuilders are recommending Mobile One LV in the 6l's
Have an 2011 6l90 put larger cooler up front and run amsoil. Running just under 100 degrees normal driving

yes as long as the transmission temp doesnt exceed the temp of the engine coolant

Alls fine and dandy with these trans delete kits which keeps the temps below 150* .. My research tells me the best operating temp for trans fluid is in the 175* range... How can we get these trans thermostats to open say at 175* instead of the factory 190* ... Anyone ? Thanks ...
Stan, the current GM replacement thermostat puts the temp at 70C or about 158F. 175 is optimal as the properties of the fluid degrade significantly as the temperature rises above 175F. Some synthetics allow for a marginal increase in maximum temperature. This allows the transmission to warm up in cool climates but keeps the temperature well below fluid breakdown temperatures at 158. The transmission temperature can actually float above the set temperature of the thermostat by the time the fluid gets to the cooler and back, especially when towing. At 158 there is some margin to prevent it from overrunning the ideal running temperature of 175F.
Whats the best ATF fluid to use? I always use Valvoline Dex VI on my 1500 chevy 2018 5.3LT
At 40K, all black already. This truck is never a hauler, only normal daily driver.

Indeed the trans temp runs around 160*/170* range here in ENC and did very well on our 3600 mile trip this past July in Canada ... Did notice an uptick in temp when returning to ENC this July with upper 95+ outside temps... While waiting in line at a Chick-Fil-A the temp went to 190*+ which quickly dropped back down to 175* when back to hwy cruising speed ... Am very pleased with the GM thermostat upgrade ... :)
@@marlonespenilla5839 Marlon, Dex VI is usually a synthetic blend or fully synthetic. If the color seems dark, you might want to smell it to insure its not burnt. If it is, all fluid and filter should be changed immediately. It can't hurt to change it or at least a partial change if it's dark anyway. Lots of stop and go driving can push up the temperature of the transmission to the point the atf is reaching a break down temperature range. There are several manufactures of dex vi that are pretty decent including GM, M1, even amsoil, and others. Many newer trucks such as your have a transmission temperature monitoring function option on the central display. I would recommend monitoring the temperature of the transmission to see if temperatures above 175F are regular. If they are, you'll need to work on its reduction. By the way, it's not a bad idea to regularly change the atf at 50K mile intervals, at least a partial. Then at every 100K change all the atf and filter.

the delete is "trango" and the bypass is "superior"
Now I'm crazy but. The wires that go under the seats. If you untwist the wires that are wound together from the factory. As the wires are made and wounded together after a little bit, the wires start touching do to the manufacture and how they're made. And after some time start touching and shortening stuff out. It may not be enough to make the engine light come on, but it will affect it. Because you're brakes are always on just a little bit. Hints the front end down driving down to road. In return will make your transmission get hot. It sounds crazy, but look at cars and trucks going down the road. And the front end is always pushing down. Take the wires and untwist them and you will see a big difference because there not touching and making the antilock brakes apply. You probably don't even notice it but just a little bit will make a big difference.

Instead of using aftermarket crap why not just work the TSB with OEM PARTS? The TSB is 21-NA-199. This aftermarket delete mess WILL VOID YOUR WARRANTY. Even if out of warranty use OEM parts.
customers at my shop don't have factory warranties anyways and I am not going to install something in my customers vehicle that can fail when I can install something that wont fail for a whole lot less money, nothing is installed at my shop with out my customers approval but thanks for your concern
Superior Solutions' kit is most likely higher quality than that of the OEM GM one, brainiac 🥴

ive built a lot of these transmissions with under 100,000 miles with over heat failures so buying a new bolt on part is just another short term solution

You are making the claim that the Sure-Cool STL010 fits ALL GM 6-speed 6L90 transmissions. Well, your communication and advertising are untrue and 100% incorrect! I currently own a 2016 GMC Sierra 2500HD 6.0L gasser with the 6L90 Hydra-Matic 6-speed and my transmission DOES NOT have a thermostat block mounted on the transmission. You need to be more truthful and upfront when making these types of blanket claims in your statements. imo

Did this mod few years back along with the mishimoto transmission cooler on my 2014 silverado 1500 and temps fluctuate in the 100-130 degrees.
I'm here in the Midwest and outside temps gets cold down in the 20 degrees or so. I've driven 2 or 3 winters now with both sure cool and mishimoto transmission cooler and temp never go pass 150 while driving highway or in town traffic. Is temp of 110-130 temp be concerning?. Will it hurt anything besides frequent fill up at the gas pump?.
