  • Is your 6l80e or newer transmission from GM overheating. These are some tips and an often times over looked culprit. The thermal bypass valve should be replaced when any major service or repair is being done to the transmission because they do go bad.

I had a friend tell me about this problem on his truck, I had no idea. Then, I started checking on my 2015 Sierra, and it was running between 195 to 204 degrees.. so I bought that kit superior solutions tech,. I paid 35 dollars for it. So today, i changed to transmission fluid, filter, and installed the superior solutions thermal bypass. It works really well. I drove it about 6 or 7 miles, and the temp only got up to 133.

Same situation with a 2016 and same $35 and same 130 range temp. I was concerned that perhaps the 130 degrees (highest I have seen has been 142 on 90 degree day) is it was supposed to open and circulate in the 150 degree range. My truck only has 44K miles so hopefully I changed early enough to save the converter. Seems to be money well spent.

Then my converter never locks up until I’m almost overheating. I run at 170s even when towing my camper I don’t go over 190. Only time it heats up is when I’m plowing hard and I’ve gotten it up to 240s 250.

I completely bypassed my valve by buying cooler lines for the 2013 (no valve)
    Added a $20 cooler
In the winter towing a trailer i was getting up to 210’
Summer now 90-100 degree weather and my trans stays at 165-170 and no more trans slipping or random shifts
    LITERALLY LIFE CHANGING

I have 424,000 miles on my 2015 Silverado with the 4.3/6L80. My engine is original but I’m on my third 6L80. I replaced the first one at 125,000 and around 180,000 replaced the second one. The second time I replaced everything, the trans, the tubes, the radiator and I deleted the trans thermostat and added a $400 trans cooler. The rubber hoses in the cooling lines were breaking down and from excessive heat causing more heat. My current 6L80 has nearly 250,000 miles and runs 60-75 degrees Fahrenheit above ambient temperatures. I’ve changed the fluid and filter once and it was impressively clean. I’m due for another fluid and filter change and this time I’m going to change the radiator and cooling tubes again. Not because of any specific issues but because I don’t want to replace another transmission.

But so far it’s been great with the lower temps I’m seeing so far.

Yes it’s a 6L80. I have a 2014 4.3 Silverado crew cab. Do you know of any external coolers compatible with the 4.3’s ? I live in CA and yesterday going up for about 45 minutes up a mountain “big bear” it got up to 230 but it dropped back down when I reached the top.

      @@alextrujillo8658
Yes…..try looking up the Mishimoto trans cooler, it should be compatible.
      230° is mighty hot!!
If you tow, it’s almost a must to put an external cooler on it, or even if you don’t tow and put power adders onto your truck, a cooler is good to have.
I have a 6L80E……..it had 105k miles on it when it gave up the ghost on me.
The best thing you can do if yours starts slipping is to find a reputable rebuilder and rebuild it with all the good parts PLUS a billet torque converter, either double or triple disk……beef it up as much as you can afford.
The torque converters are known failure points, and when they fail, it’s cascades from there……those tiny pieces of clutch material and metal pieces will destroy your trans all over again.
It gets expensive but it’s better to overbuild it with great parts, and get longevity out of it…….it comes at a price like everything else.
But start with a cooler first…..it is the cheapest way first😄😎
      Good luck 👍

      @flyonawall6521 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@jodycollins1857 I realize you posted this about 2yrs ago but here's what I'm thinking the entire issue is. These transmissions' thermal bypass have too high of a tolerance. In other words they do not open up fast enough. So everyone's transmission temperature runs hot 195-215 F...that's too hot and it causes the torque converter to fail (tear apart) which causes severe damage to the transmission when pieces of metal end up going through the transmission. Thermal bypass too hot >>>>> Damages Torque Converter >>>>>> Destroys Transmission.
By installing the thermal bypass update, either by installing the kit [about $40] or doing the "pill flip" [free], you can keep the transmission fluid cool ... down to about an avg of 150F full time, thus avoiding the temperature to get so hot that it destroys the torque converter.
Design flaw that GM refuses to fix through recall or a real service bulletin. This entire situation has seriously caused me to rethink my want to purchase another Silverado in the future. They know the problem but refuse to correct it.

It upshifts really smoothly honestly but it does down shift a bit rough from 2nd to 1st under quick braking. @@Locochon1 Before the bypass it would always stay in the mid 190s during regular driving or interstate driving. In super heavy traffic on a warm day in the summer, it would reach 198 to 204 degrees. There is a lot of misinformation about the bypass. It does for the most part keep the fluid much, much cooler. And I believe that's a great thing. But you can still get it up there depending on how hard you are pushing the transmission. It's not like the bypass will keep your fluid at 160 degrees or lower no matter what. If you're pushing the truck really hard (i.e. flooring it, breaking really hard and then flooring it again over and over), it will raise up there. But the biggest advantage is how often it stays below 165 degrees consistently (even in traffic jams on super hot days it hasn't gotten above 180). So the thing is the vast majority of the time my fluid runs 30 or more degrees cooler. As far as the downshifting goes? I can audibly hear it. It doesn't jerk or anything. So I'm guessing that's just a characteristic of this particular transmission. I've noticed all of the 6l80 transmissions I've had have some quark that I don't like. But they all have lasted pretty well so far.

I didn't study before I purchased the make and model and common issues, now I am looking into it and WOW, it's pretty bad.

Anywho, I appreciate your direct answer. That was the ballpark temp I was thinking it should hover around after all the posts I have been reading.
I did a VIN check online to see if all the recalls or updated "things" have been taken care of and supposedly they have, so idk, it may have the update cooler mod already done, I know normally it's running around 190-200 average temp.
