    Nice comparison, thanks. And yes it's so important to note that higher ISO doesn't just add more noise, what's more important here is the loss of detail, contrast and color accuracy. I'll take a bit of extra noise any day over any of that.

    thank you, i could only notice the color change but then noticed I was viewing at 720p, so change to max resolution 2160p and watched the tests again and still could notice much of a difference. Of course it could be the glass of wine.

    Great comparison! Falls in line with my real world results. I’ve pushed the SIII to 51k ISO once and it was useable, but I often use the 12800. I pretty much keep the A7IV under 3200 when I use it.

    I have used ISO102400 with the 20mm f/1.8G at f/2.8 for night safari tram videos, to maintain a 1.3 Stop over expose for S-Log 3. Crazy stuff, I could actually see the animal beside the tram from my camera rather than my own eyes. (Had to dim the screen a lot to not annoy others beside me)
    Admittedly the lens is too wide but I overheard people wow-ing that I can get night videos while their phones are all dark.
    Sure, its rather grainy but it still creates and image for documenting purposes rather than a mass of darkness in the phone.
    As for car videos, I hover at 25600 often at night and even 51200 often at hotel lobby, where all these rare cars are and its rather dim at night.

    Nice video, to the point without getting out into the weeds too much. Had not seen the loss of colour and detail in the a7iv at higher ISO before, so that was a good take away. I shoot a lot of video under moonlight only, so the second native ISO of 12800 in slog and being usable (for my eyes with some NR in post) at up to 51200 kept the a7s III in my bag. The lack of uncropped 4K60 was a no go for me too, which is a pity as I really like the detail obtained from such highly downsampled footage.

    4:12 to 4:27 - It's because it has fewer megapixels for the same size sensor. That allows each individual pixel unit to capture more photons which leads to better per-pixel colors in low light situations.

    Great video. I would like to see a comparison between the a7s3 60fps and a74 60fps noise/iso test.

    Somehow the a7siii looks perfect while the a7iv has some strange macro blocking and pattern shifting in the low iso range (TH-cam pb:4k , tv:1080p)

    Which A7IV log profile do you suggest for low light, even moonlight with minimal practicals, slog-3 or hlg-3?

  • @DanielSymphonies
    @DanielSymphonies 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    i dont think it translates because to me, on my calibrated monitor watching in 4k, A7S iii looked way better all the way up to 1600 iso. before that i didn't even see any noise on the A7s iii side where A7IV had clearly visible noise

    Harv, can you kindly do a video explaining what all of the Sony model numbers mean - as in what is an R vs an S and why you would buy each, with detail etc please?
    It's very confusing to know which one suits your needs when your starting off...
    I'm interesting in filming wildlife and landscapes in Africa for example, and taking the odd nice picture....

    i wonder what export settings you are using. what you are saying does not seem to correspond exactly to what i am seeing. i am getting the feeling that e.g. at 6:08, you were seeing more difference than we are seeing. it seems compression may be the bottleneck there. have you looked into how to export to get youtube to show virtually the exact same thing as you would see in editing? maybe it's just my eyes that suck though

  • @keithwcaselman
    @keithwcaselman ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Thanks for the comparison, I was wondering if the zv-e1 has as good low light results being it is using the same asiii sensor. If so, that's a cheap way into a great vlog and low light camera for wildlife photographers.

    Debating if I should spend 3.4k for an A7siii or 1k less for the A7iv. I'll be using it mainly for real estate work. That 4k 120 just sounds so tempting tho....

    • @EyeLensWeddingVideography

      @@HarvVideoAudioStuff Yeah that's true but it would probably been nice to see how the a7iv 4k 60p crop sensor holds up in comparison to a full frame sensor in low light. Since there isn't that many people with a video out like that maybe you should make one might get some views from that. That is if you still got both of the cameras LOL..

    • @EyeLensWeddingVideography

      @@HarvVideoAudioStuff I figured you probably did but I know some TH-camrs get cameras on loan and then they have to return them. That's the only reason why I was asking. I have both of the cameras as well but I use the a74 for mostly photography. I do use it as a b camera for wedding ceremonies, but I've never actually took the time out to test and compare each other low light capabilities. To me it seems like it does pretty good in low light not as good as the A7 S3 it does okay. But again I never ran it through any tests and really used it at night time or in low life situations for video. A friend of mine was asking me about it and I can't really find any videos online that compare them, to show him, but I did tell him that you will get better results at a7s3.

    Why don't people compare these cameras with no gamma curve (Picture Profile) applied? I own and have shot both of these bodies and the A7IV is no match for the A7SIII. With NO PP applied (the equal to RAW in stills) the 2 base ISO's of the A7SIII are 80 and 1600. Compare that to the A7IV with the 2 base ISO's of 100 and 400. The noise from that A7IV sensor beyond that 2nd native base ISO is simply awful IMO.

    • @HarvVideoAudioStuff
      @HarvVideoAudioStuff  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I suppose because most people shoot in one of the log modes so to compare using pp off wouldn’t give us ‘real world’/useful information

    • @elmegade3
      @elmegade3 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@HarvVideoAudioStuff I disagree - these cameras are marketed as hybrids. I shoot my A7SIII as much for stills as video because it is an awesome stills camera. I hear photographers, who shoot primarily stills, tellling me that the A7IV "cleans up" at the 2nd ISO value related to the s-log3 gamma curve. It's simply not true when shooting RAW. The second base ISO is actually 400!!! If you are going to do this test I think you'd be best served explaining this difference so your "average Joe" knows. Remember these cameras are designed first and foremost as stills cameras with video functionality as an added feature. Particularly the A7IV.

    • @HarvVideoAudioStuff
      @HarvVideoAudioStuff  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      But this video was solely about the video side of things, my channel is 0% stills based as always

    • @elmegade3
      @elmegade3 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@HarvVideoAudioStuff I realise that but maybe the title should reflect that? I am not saying that in a provocative way. I mean, the way the YT algorithms work this video would get suggested to all seeking low light comparisons between these 2 cameras (for either video or stills).

      Most people don't need that, perhaps when people start preferring a7siii for photos then it might be useful, as of now i myself wouldn’t be considering the a7siii for photos even if it has much better iso performance, 12mp isn’t it anymore mate
      Also both of their iso performance is in the most people's 'good enough for me' range anyway
