Finally, a truly unbiased comparison of specs and general performance! So tired of seeing people who clearly favor one over the other do a "comparison". They are both great cameras and each have their pros and cons relative to what the user needs.
I know a lot of people hate sensor crop, and it is a bummer to have one at 4k60, but I LOVE that you can enable super 35 at anytime. When doing close up b-roll it is so nice to be able to crop if you need it and I use sensor cropping as extra zoom all the time.
@@jaycarl1562 I did buy the a7iV and personally I love having the sensor crop option. I have run into it a few times that it is a bummer at 4k60, but personally I have used it to give me some extra crop on my lens almost every video I film. I am primarily using a 28-70 sigma, so that super 35 mode helps me get it more to the 105mm which I like because I used to film almost exclusively on a 28-105.
Two huge things no one ever seems to mention regarding the a7IV video that Im glad you did. In 4K 24 and 30, its oversampled from 7K,. The a7S III comes nowhere close to that resolution as it can only do around 4.2K. Also, the crop on the a7IV 4K 60 is no big deal. Most every cinema camera from ARRI, RED, as well as the Sony and Canon cinema cameras, have sensors around the same size as that (APS-C) crop in 4K 60 on the a7IV. I chose the a7IV. Its $1k cheaper, its a TON better for photo, has a better AF system, separate photo and video settings, 7K resolution video and I dont need 240fps. Its pretty much the perfect camera IMO.
Resolution doesn't matter. People love to crop in 400% to show you a minor difference. But where in cinema are you cropping in 400%? The uncropped images side by side look the exact same. The terrible rolling shutter makes the Sony a7IV a no go for me.
Sony people when Canon's old cameras have a video crop: OMG! Canon is crippling their cameras! Sony people in 2022 when Sony cameras have a video crop: OMG! It's a huge bonus! Cinema cameras have this feature!

The A7SIII is actually using a 48MP sensor. In order to get a 12mp final image, it digitally combines 4 adjacent pixels into 1. This explains why its noise performance is actually worse than the IV (split between the downsampling, the fact that the SIII's "yuuuge" photosites that everyone likes to talk about are actually much smaller than the IV's, and that pixel compositing is inherently noisy business), and why the A1 was "magically" able to do everything the SIII can do without really making any sacrifices; they're essentially using the same sensor.

If I connect an external monitor to this camera, does the face tracking autofocus still work while recording internally in the camera?

Great Video I already have the A7 IV and do not plan on switching but just find it interesting to learn how different cameras compare. Thank you for this to the point comparison.
The a7IV reminds me of a full frame a6700. Love the hybrid. Thanks so much!
Great comparison Caleb - it convinced me that for my semi-pro usage, I'd be more than happy with A7 IV and it's 10bit recording. Thinking about upgrading from A7 III.
Always top-notch videos.

Great video! Just got my A7IV last week. Good choice, I think. :) Looking forward to seeing about your A7IV guide!!
All the years I've been watching you, I've never know you were in Chicago! So cool.
What an excellent comparison! Thank you for this.
A7siii gang here. Better EVF, display, and no crop 4k60fps is a HUGE deal for me. Love it
But when it comes to pictures, A7IV is better.
