    I’ve been enjoying my A7iv so much and have had no issues on weddings or commercial shoots. I’m using the Sigma 18-35 to deal with the crop in 4K and every time I use this camera it blows me away with the image quality. Great video Matt thanks so much!

    If you wonder why A7 IV has crop on 4k 60p, it's due to sensor read out speed, which is more then 16,6ms for full sensor needed for 60fps (actualy it's over 26ms). That's why you observe the rolling shutter issue in 4k super35 on A7 IV. To achive 60 fps less lines are being read every frame, so you've got faster read out speed, but also a crop factor. Simultanously horizontal resolution is too low to perform line skiping or line binding, which I beleve A1 doeas with it's 50Mpix sensor. In other words it's not a software limitation, but hardware limitation of the sensor itself.

    The key difference here I believe is 4k in higher frame rates without cropping but for me I need that crop to happen so that I can get 52/53 on a 35 in 4k 60. If your lights are correct and your color grading is correct you can generate very nice footage in FHD 120 on the A7IV as well.

    Great comparison Matt! I got the a7iv on release (after 2 months of waiting for it to ship that is) and just got the FX3 last month. I'd have to say the biggest plus I have with the FX3 over the a7iv is the new Cine EI mode, although not necessary I definitely found it super useful and intuitive to use after a little practice. Also the 4k 120 on the FX3 is a great feature to have, and regarding the overheating , I've had my a7iv overheat on me once in 35 celsius, shooting at 1080p 120 on a gimbal, but that was the only time. The FX3 on the other hand has never overheated no matter the conditions so it is nice not having to sorry about that 😄

    The A7siii has probably the fastest sensor readout speed, which is below 10ms and is very close to the Alexa. It seems Sony managed to solve the Rolling Shutter issue with this camera. This is possible because of that low megapixel count and I do not think Sony was trying to add a cripple handle when it came to A7siv. With those many megapixels, the higher readout is just not possible. Even Panasonic's Netflix approved camera the S1H, suffers from Rolling Shutter when using the full sensor. The rolling shutter is much better when using the S35 mode on S1H.

    As an A7SIII user. Honestly you dont need any sharper video than that. It looks way to digital that we have to turn down the sharpness on the A7SIII. Go try watch your 4K footage at 45mbps and play it on ur 4K tv. Then compare its sharpness to actual 4k feature film’s sharpness. You’ll notice it’s already way too sharp.

    I use a7iii, a7IV, and a7siii for my wedding filming. For the shooting experience, a7siii is better than a7IV in every aspect. The 4K 60P crop is really a huge downside on a7IV cause I must use a wider lens, and it would be too wide when I switch to a7siii. In this case, I have to leave 24GM with a7IV on the gimble as a b-camera and use a7siii for most of the filming. That's why I am buying another A7siii (or FX3) now. For the a7iii...it's just too hard to match the color with a7IV and a7siii.

    I’ve been filming weddings with an A7SIII camera as my main and an A7IV for backup/ceremonies. I did have the A7IV overheat after an hour and a half of 4K 24p (with steadyshot and AF turned off) in an unventilated space. Overall I’d say not to use it for that. Beyond that, though, it’s been just fine, and I love having a B cam that excels at high quality photos.

    I use 2 x a7SIII's for wedding filmmaking, and my wife recently upgraded her a7III's to 2 x a7IV's for wedding photography - and there are days I wish I had both an a7IV and an a7SIII as I think that would provide the greatest flexibility. Now if I want to take photos for fun I borrow an a7IV as the 33-megapixel images are fantastic. As it is - Karen can shoot B roll video on her a7IV for me and it's indistinguishable from my a7SIII footage.
    Simultaneous recording to dual cards is an absolute must - one unreadable card straight after a wedding shoot is all I needed to convince me of that fact :)

    I'd argue that line skipped full frame 4k60 will almost certainly use less processing power then both downsampled 7k to 4k and 4.8 to 4k, which will result in less heat to deal with.
    In my eyes, there are two possibilities:
    A: They actually told the truth, that, they didn't want to settle for less detail with binned or skipped 4K, so they went with crop
    or
    B: They wanted to protect the A7sIII.
    The problem with both of those are:
    A: They could've given us both to chose from, so when I go on a real esate shoot I can have the slow mo and wided angle, but when I shoot details I can go in crop mode..
    B: All of us video shooters want the A7sIII, and we would love the 4K 120 and full hd 240, the better rolling shutter performance, Raw capabilities via external recorder. That being said, those of us who still struggle to cover expenses, and trying to grow our video business will still get the A7IV instead 'cause it's cheaper. My point is, the 4K60 is not the only advantage of the A7sIII, and I don't think the sales of it will drop if A7IV had it.

    Where a7siii thrives most is durability and consistency. No overheating for filming hours continuesly. No rolling shutter
    Also it is obviously that a7iv processor can't keep up with 4k (from 7k) resolution in 60 thus that is why it has crop? You may ask why I impy that - because a7iv has rolling shutter and that is usually a clue that processor is not enough to handle that

    Currently I'm using the Sony A7 IV, I would suggest there is one benefit of A7 IV of it's "clear image zoom (x1.5)". Practically I customize into "C2" custom button and just one-click to get instant punch in (x1.5) as long the frame rate is below 4K 50/60p.
    This feature is greatly welcome especially for run & gun or any filmmaking gigs that are unpredictable. The Panasonic Lumix system cameras also have the similar feature as well.

    I think two other points that can get over looked, but are A huge reason I pick up my S3 over the A7IV.. are the higher resolution screen and rolling shutter. They are both significantly better!

      I believe I did mention the rolling shutter in the video, and while I agree with you that the s3’s screen is better, it is still not absolutely stellar and filmmakers that want something even better should get a external monitor :)

    I'm a wedding videographer, and I have had a negative experience with the A74 overheating whilst shooting a 4K wedding ceremony. It was admittedly a very hot day here in Australia, but it shut down 3 times during a 1/2hr ceremony and was also giving over heating warnings earlier in the day during the bride prep. One of my other shooters experience this as well whilst shooting in 1080p. - It was only my b-roll cam, as I was also running 2 x A7siii's at the same time so it was not the end of the world. - but after this experience I couldn't trust the camera and I sold it strait away and replaced it with another A7siii. - I should add that I have had plenty of experience with the A73 and that never overheated (the A73 doesn't run at the same high bit rate of course).

      a7iii does overheat for me as well when it comes to documentary recording. I start to see the overheating warning after the 20 minute mark recording in 4K, XAVC S, 30fps and 8-bit. A7IV does the same for me and im lucky that some of the events I went to, they have ice that i can grab a piece of ice and help cool off the a7iv while letting it rest for 5 minutes. My FX3 have had the overheating symbol shown up at the 30 minute mark but it has never shut down on me which is great! I think people shouldn't use their a7iv as the primary camera unless they give it a good 5 minute break between long recordings

    • @stuARTvideoproductions
      @stuARTvideoproductions 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@harryvuemedia5106 yes I agree, the a74 is fine if you're not relying on it for large clips. Obviously the picture is great. Interesting your experience with the A73 - I've never seen an overheating sitch with the A73, however back when I was using the A73's as main cameras I wasn't shooting 4K often so perhaps thats why I hadn't seen an overheating situation with them. A7siii is definitely the way to go, I've shot for 2hrs strait and they've never failed me.

      @@stuARTvideoproductions It was during speeches that would last up to 2 hours. I stay consistent with all my videos so I have to record in 4K resolution even during speeches. I used a V60 Prograde card with the screen flipped out. The a7iii still overheated so I have to use my a7Sii for speeches which I also hacked the camera to allow longer than 30 minute recording time. The a7Sii has overheated too but only in direct sunlight and it can handle long speeches over an hour without any warning temps at all especially with a V30 card. Definitely has to be the sensor readout.

    Heads up: The A7IV battery life is not as long as the A7III. Typically go through 3 batteries for a 10hr wedding day on the A7S, it's more like 4-5 on the A7IV. Other than that + the increased rolling shutter on the A7IV - there isn't much difference!

  • @MattSpaugh
    @MattSpaugh ปีที่แล้ว

    Great stuff as always. Unless I"m mistaken, you cannot output RAW from the A7IV. So, if you're using the Atomos Ninja V to capture ProRes, you can only do that with the A7Siii. Is that correct?

    Matt, have the a7siii and just had the opportunity to work with the a7iv… Hands down; the higher resolution/pixel count of the a7siii EVF and screen was a dealbreaker for me-your side by side should note the quality bump for professionals who want the best possible optic representation via EVF and flip out screen.

    Just got the A7IV in August. This past weekend was the first wedding shoot with it. I missed my A7III at the time. The over heating and chewing through Batteries was nerve racking. However the image that came out of the A7IV is phenomenal. I would say if your an A7III or A7C user I would go with the A7SIII over the A7IV if you really want to feel like you upgraded.

      you can turn off the sensor that stops the camera from recording at high temps. I use the a7siii and a7IV and forgot to turn it off on the a7IV and missed 10 seconds of the ceremony....luckily I still was recording on my 2nd angle with the a7siii. Since turning it off I don't have any issues running/recording. I actually have recorded for several hours with the a7IV many times with no issues. I also use a battery grip which I personally believe helps with dissipating the heat from the battery away from the camera.
