Hello everybody! After making my original video on the Super Mario 64 iceberg, I got an idea to make a similar video about most, if not all of the content from the game that ended up going unused or being cut during development. Now obviously I didn't mention everything to the 100% because some of the things like the behavioral code (which is text only) would be REALLY boring to talk about, so I tried to talk about all of the interesting things as opposed to having a boring video on this.
This video was pretty fun to make! The research wasn't too bad, especially considering that The Cutting Room Floor basically does the research for me. They are responsible for 95% of the narration in this video, and my only additions include reworks to some of the lines as well as my own remarks. Depending on how this video does, it will decide it I make more of these types of videos in the future.
Not really much else to say. If you like what you saw, then please consider subscribing to the channel :)
About Super Mario 64:
Super Mario 64 is a 1996 platform game developed and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo 64. It was released in Japan and North America in 1996 and PAL regions in 1997. It is the first Super Mario game to feature 3D gameplay, combining traditional Super Mario gameplay, visual style, and characters in a large open world. In the game, Bowser, the primary antagonist of the Super Mario franchise, invades Princess Peach's castle and hides the castle's sources of protection, the Power Stars, in many different worlds inside magical paintings. As Mario, the player collects Power Stars to unlock enough of Princess Peach's castle to get to Bowser and rescue Princess Peach.

This actually shows more models than any other video on TH-cam. Really showing EVERYTHING, not just the highlights.
Thanks, I still left out a lot of the 209 Mario animations, as well as things like unused trees and leftover code. Didn’t think it was interesting enough
@@gmdblueit’s so much appreciated, so many videos don’t even show what they’re talking about, this is a breath of fresh air

Omg lol thats perfect
That unused Mario Jump Sound at 4:07 ended up being used in Super Smash Brothers Melee for Luigi's jump sound effect and other moves
It was also reused in SM64DS
It's also in Super Mario 63, though that's just a nostalgic old fangame :)
@@catharticcnostalgia unlocked🔓
21:33 I should clarify that I created the behavior for the hopper enemy shown in this footage and it was not its intended behavior, hopper was a model created to test how enemy's would look on the n64 and not actually do anything

That older Wiggler model is notable for having its body segments modeled with actual 3D spheres.
In the final version, only Wiggler's legs are 3D objects. The rest of his body is made of 2D circular spirites that create the illusion of 3D spheres. Most spherical objects in SM64 are actually just 2D sprites.
The sphere thing is pretty clever since a sphere is going to look the same from every angle so all they had to do is make sure the sphere sprite moves with the camera so you never see that it's flat.
@@axebomber2108 Yeah even once I was aware of the trick, I still struggled to see past the illusion for a while.
The illusion worked really well on CRTs. A lot more noticeable nowadays via emulation though.
One of the tcrf/gigaleak editors here. You should have gone over some of the text only stuff. The early star locations and early translation are very interesting.
Also oshin was not meant for the hmc gas, as oshin was supposed to be an unrelated nausea environment effect, the hmc gas uses the gas prefix on animations.
Badger I’m glad you’ve moved beyond your past, we’ve always known you were a gamer at heart
This guy sounds like hed be a perfect voice actor for bottles from banjo kazooie
The more I listen to this, the more respect I have for the guy who made the B3313 mod.
It was a team of people, but definitely still impressive work regardless
So wait that trampoline thing would've been in the red cap stage right? I bet that means it would've acted as a level reset, letting you go high up in the air at the same height the level starts you at, having multiple chances to get those red coins, and if that's true then i would've loved that as a kid. Having to get those 8 red coins in one single attempt was so difficult for 4 year old me, and having multiple chances would've been amazing.
I actually never heard the theory that it would reset the player position, but that would be awesome. I could see Mario jump on the trampoline with the camera locking in place and mario flying of screen, only to transition to flying at the starting position.
The thumbnail looks like the Blargg has eyes.
32:44 I'm going to put my money on "the demos are using the same inputs but something about the PAL framerate makes the movement just ever so slightly different"
To be a bit more precise, the smoke texture at 38:34 (gameplay from Return to Yoshi's Island) has the correct format but has also been given scaling and transparency effects. If you were to simply change the format, the smoke would look like this but stay the same size the entire time it exists and disappear without an animation.
Hey guys in this video I'm going to read TCRF wiki page for Super Mario 64.
this is just the tcrf article
36:25
The middle coin of the line can be collected in game just by walking over the slope where it is, most people don't know it's collectible probably because they just don't realise it
The Japanese version has more differences, such as Spawning Displacement causes by platforms affecting Mario for 1 more frame when he enters a different area, the 999 coin limit bug due to the game accidentally setting lives to 999 instead of coins when the limit is over 999, a softlock when you die and trigger the lakitu cutscene at the start of the game, and how Poles will not force you off them if you grab them with , such as Spawning Displacement causes by platforms affecting Mario for
6:01 I love that the literal translation of the Chinese version implies that Mario can go through walls, just not without hurting himself.
lmao
"wanwan" for the chain chomp is (probably) a joke about how it's essential a dog on a chain with "wan" being the Japanese onomatopoeia for a dog barking (i.e. wan wan instead of bark bark)
Thank you hit indie game developer TobyFox, creator of the legendary 2015 game UNDERTILE for being the reason i know this information.
Y’all doing bro dirty in the comments 😭😭
I was wondering why you were so opposed to citing your sources when clearly using footage from Pannenkoek, but as other people have pointed out, this video is blatantly just reading the game’s TCRF article out, and adding in errors where you’re paraphrasing.
with DeArrow this video's just called "Near-verbatim reading of the Super Mario 64 TCRF page" which is absolutely brutal but accurate lmao
the only time ive heard the boing sound used in game was Vinesauce's Mario 64 corruptions where it replaces the "it's-a me, Mario"
Same!!!
I'm still fascinated by this game's development and cut content. Maybe one day we'll uncover more or even a full beta build.
Will you be doing more of these videos? I'd love to see a deep dive into Sunshine's unused content.
hey so, the cutting room floor's audio player has a glitch currently where playing a sound repeats the first bit of it before it plays normally. Though the player does contain the option to download the sounds. Though I'm not sure if it happens if it's your first time playing that sound before the page is reloaded but just keep that in mind for future videos.
Every time I try to download videos or audio from tcrf, it doesn’t work
The clouds in the thumbnail makes the Dino-creature have eyes lol.
The placement of those clouds on this video’s thumbnail is slightly psychotic. I respect you
you didn't know there were bats in the game? you made a whole "ultimate" iceberg video on this game and you're surprised by this?
I remember hearing that third unused voice sound in Vinesauce's iconic Mario 64 corruptions vid.
if u listen closely to the unused mario jump sound it sounds similar to a high pitched link strike sound from zelda oot on the 64
You have the manliest voice ive ever heard
Yeah yeah whatever
Never stopped enjoying SM64 content. New things to learn even the ones I already knew~
Why the ~?
Cause I think it adds... p e r s o n a l i t y.@@Curlyheart
.
Something that wasn't mentioned, is that the trampoline has no official model. VL-Tone made the model you see in the video, based off the texture (which did remain).
EDIT: Hm it seems that in TCRF was a mistake. Now it says the model doesn't load correctly, so I guess he did just fix that.
nice word-for-word readthrough of the tcrf SM64 pages lmao
Frfr?
I actually didn’t know quite a bit of this stuff. Thanks for teaching me about it
Never could have guessd from your posts what this video could have been but a banger
5:10 so for whatever reason these flowers actually appeared in Conkers Bad Fur Day (the tutorial level)
Dude this video rocks, I love hearing about obscure things and unused content in video games. And doing it all in one long video is amazing.
14:50 how did you NOT know there were bats in this game. Have you even played SM64? You run RIGHT into them during HMC
He is NOT a super player.
@@TuffyMouseRBLX on god he isn’t
he hasn't. he's just reading the article from tcrf.
22:42 That’s the animation when you’re walking in deep sand. It’s still in the final game.
He got it off of TCRF, so it’s probably a slightly altered version
I have never clicked a video this fast the moment I saw unused content and mario 64
4:07 didnt the unused mario jump sound end up being used in melee??
Not sure, but it might’ve been
it definitely was
I think it was also used in SM64DS in some capacity...
Fantastic commentary dude. I look forward to more videos in the future
(12:27) And on a box of Kellogg’s Frosted Mini Wheats…no really.
many poor cereal fans were traumatized that day
penguin nightmares
I think the massive color changing cube was more likely used to test LoD models than shading.
The B3313 mod makes full use of a lot of the early designs
14:56 If I had to guess, that is meant to be a pun of some kind. In german, bats are called "Fledermaus" with Maus being mouse. I wouldn't be surprised if other languages like japanese have something similar going on and it just didn't translate into english at all. Or at least that is the only lead I have as to what it is supposed to mean.
Awesome work! This fuels my Mario brainrot
ive seen a "unused content" sm64 vids before a few years ago and it was also around 40min long.
weird.
oh well lets-a go again!
Love this type of content, I'll be keeping an eye on your channel!
25:06 that image is the German letter Ü.
17:19 actually, those are 2 different star sprites, the one on the right being rendered like this in game.
Nice and interesting video!

I should have read the info next to that Yoshi egg graphic, I never knew it wasn't related to Yoshi just because I never read, so that's new info for me, thanks!
I love this style of video on something like issac, or even terraria. that would be awesome sauce
What room hack were you playing with the fixed smoke? It looks cool
This is so well done congratulations 👏🎉. Loved it
I don't know why but the Blargg kind of looks like it has eyes due to the clouds in the bg almost lining up perfectly with the placement of the Blargg lmao
30:58 - it's the same texture but wih more repetition to make 3 stripes. A good reason for changing that is, of course, to reduce texel density and make it cheaper for the N64 to render.
yea uhhh the frozen bowser animation frame is part of a gif, but because of how it works, it doesnt actually animate until you click on it
and its just bowser going wild so like
not much more
I grew up with the alternative JRB painting because it's the one used in the DS version of the game.
My brain must be messed up because I heard you say “hey what’s going on guys” and for just a brief moment I was expecting Dawko’s intro. I don’t even watch him outside of when I want to see secrets in games that no one else would care about, and even then he’s not my first pick because he’s usually already seen the secret and excitedly spoils it before showing it off.
5:32 What's Delicious Cake? Judging by the backround footage it's an unused level but you said it's something to do with text that pops up after you beat a level, and if thats the case then what were the requirements to get it to show up?
Is Jesse still in Alaska?💀
I love how this can ALMOST be a FF7 remake reference.
9:38 Quite interesting that J and V are seemingly missing.
Are the letters just not in the character table, or have they been moved since the creation of this debug screen?
why narge simton hair is freaking tall????!!
Shoutouts to Blaarg, gotta be my favorite dragon tales characters
carmen winstead ahh voice
the grasshopper makes me think they maybe wanted tiny huge island to have a bug theme besides its gimmick
Solid video my guy, very entertaining.
Dude the early version whomp face fucking killed me laughing I'm making it my pfp
For the first video of this type, you did a pretty good job. You really did a good job at showing pretty much everything this game has to cover. Maybe do a zelda game next? Wouldn't recommend Ocarina of Time JUUUUUST yet, since that one has so much cut content it would take a while to finish while covering everything. Maybe consider that game to be your ultimate test, haha. Maybe A Link to The Past? Majora's Mask has a fair amount of content, but I think it could still be a fair challenge. I dunno, whatever you do, I wish you the best.
Never heard a voice that sounds like a early 2010s TTS voice as someones voice before
0:55 "Monolith" tends to refer to a group that all think the same. I do not think it was the best choice in this context as you were referring to a group just being large and active. Just a small nit pick. Great video
where does the delicious cake background footage come from?

The background to that thumbnail makes it look like raargh has eyes
I’m looking at these comments and I like how everyone agrees that this guy could voice act for a lot of characters 💀
This video was incredible! I loved it!
Really great video. Extremely thorough.
Great video, loved it as always
Great vid, do DK64 next!
Last time the SM64 community memed on a guy's voice, it was pannenkoek, who didn't do another commented video for years. You guys need to chill
Fun fact: The beta Mario model is also in Mario Artist 3D modeling studio or whatever that Mario Paint sequel was called
I’m loving ur non gd content
I think some Mario 64 enemies are really cool and need a comeback. Chuckya, Heave-Ho, Grindel and Snufit would be neat additions in a newer Mario game.
Since you asked for us to let you know how you did, I will criticize one aspect:
Throughout the video you told and repeated A LOT of times that this or that item / enemy / animation is your favorite, or that you did not know about this enemy name / this trivia / this piece of information / etc. But honestly, this is not relevant information for us viewers: we are watching your video to learn objective (and interesting) stuff, we don't not need to know about your artistic tastes or about what knowledge you acquired in the making of the video. If I was to post a comment enumerating all what I just learnt, you wouldn't care, would you?
Nevertheless, this was an enjoyable video.
I find it kinda strange no unused music has ever been found
Since Mario can actually jump into the bombs in the Bowser levels and get hurt, I assume they were reused there.
I just noticed that you use my video for the unused pyramid cutscene that's cool😄
In the thumbnail, the cloud behind the red unused dragon looks like its eyes
I didnt watch this video yet, but I saw the comments, and I just gotta say...this dude is the best. I mean, they even showed this lava dude from the thumbnail that NO ONE talks about! And yes, it is from super mario world.
next time do your own research instead of just reading the wiki and changing it a little bit thinking people won't notice
how is the beware the forest mushrooms remix from around the part where you talk about the early star called?
BADGER?? WHAT ARE YOU DOIN HERE
I just had to say it but the clouds on the thumbnail and the enemy in the middle kind of makes it look like the enemy has eyes
this video is a near-verbatim reading of the tcrf page
Next video should be about what kinda video game zombies are the best
You can throw mips if you glitch through the door where you find one in the basement and go to the deep water and when you’re in the water you can actually throw them so you can it will just probably be hard to do
The Unused Boing Sound is an Early Version of The Spring Power Up Boing Sound in Super Mario Galaxy. There is probably an Unused Springboard/Bouncepad left over in Mario 64’s files, Designed after The Springboard/Bouncepad from Super Mario World and/or Super Mario Bros. 3. That’s why this Game has an Unused Boing Sound in It’s files. The Springboard/Bouncepad, while Having a Finished Model, didn’t make it to The Final Release Build of The Game.
