So I think the joke is, that your character left, so you're instead playing as a clay figure, meant to take the place of your character until they come back. This is why the face looks like a gyroids, since they're clayfigures as well. This is also why Coco has a similar face, as she's meant to be a clay doll as well. I could be wrong about this though.

Resetti capping the text speed to talk slower reminds me of N in Pokemon Black and White, with N always having a 1 stage faster text speed because he talks fast. Pokemon BW even has a hidden faster text speed for the effect when you're on the highest setting. Love it when games have little details like that.
Speaking of Pokemon BW and text speed, IIRC there's an old woman NPC that has lower text speed than every other NPC, and can be made even slower if you play with slow text speed.

So there's a newer 2.0 revision of the format, which supports up to 768, though I don't feel like counting to see how many of the slots are actually used so far.
There’s something about finding secrets about the GC version specifically. I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that when we started playing it, it was like 2002, we were 7 years old, and did not go on the internet…so all we knew about the game was what we stumbled upon on our own. We didn’t even meet Farley in the wishing well for the first time until 2017! Had no idea she even existed!
I think a large part of it is also how obscure this stuff is. Most things these days are found like 5 minutes after release, and the method is rarely that complex or unlikely. They focus on everything being seen by everyone, as though every game is meant to be "completed", even if that's not really the point.

I recognize the map select screen at 10:45 as a modification of the one in Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask. Which makes me think... it's still not that well known that the game is built directly on the Zelda engine, there could be some interesting things to discuss about that.
@@LysolPionex The Zelda code has no resemblance at all to Mario 64's, it's unclear why Miyamoto said something that made people think they were related - they just aren't. Whereas Animal Forest/Crossing reused everything possible from Zelda, which was a lot.
@@Toonrick12 Different approaches. OoT/MM are emulated. Animal Crossing was ported (although the graphics in particular might have a semi-emulation approach because the data was in N64 display list format? not sure)
For the PAL region disc, the game requires the disc in the console or else it'll demand you insert the disc every time you enter or leave a building, like Nook's Cranny, or your house. The game itself compresses to 80MB at the lowest, possibly due to the languages for the region.
"I couldn't find the translated text online so me and my friend translated it ourselves" I love how much you have done for this community and I can't wait to see what's next!!
ooh, we actually learned about the fact that basically all of AC fit in the gamecube's RAM because our gamecube's disk drive started dying, but would still read well enough at first, presumably just falling out of alignment over time while it ran, so Animal Crossing was the only gamecube game we could reliably play for a time until we got a new gamecube Would LOVE to see more videos like this one
About the first one, when I first played AC I rented it. I noticed that you didn't need the game in post-bootup, and basically played it for a while after returning it XD
If I remember correctly, Resetti will also punish you with the Gyroid face if you reset without saving too many times. That's how I recall getting it for the first time. Made me so upset that I ended up deleting that character.
When placing down additional Nook stores, I wonder how the game handles upgrading them. Does the game keep track of each Nook's sales independently? Unless that data is tied to the object itself, I doubt it. Would placing something like a Nook's Cranny cause it to immediately get upgraded the next day if the village already has a higher tier Nook store? Also, while I've never heard this be confirmed nor denied anywhere, I'm convinced that there's some kind of code when determining villager spawns to increase the likelihood of certain features. On my first ever village I had 2 villagers that spawned with the village in the same acre, and whose names combined were that of a celebrity. To think of this as random chance sounds far less likely than there being a list of possible "OnVillageCreation" easter eggs.
The fact there is always something hidden away inside the original Animal Crossing and its variations. As the game continues to get decompiled, I can only imagine what else is waiting to be discovered! Love your videos Hunter, looking forward to see more!
I am very surprised at how seeing behind the curtain of this game actually makes it feel MORE magical. Not sure why. Also, as someone who owns that official Animal Crossing guidebook, it would be awesome to see a video about it.
Because the game is basically held together with duct tape and glue. It makes it more magical on the grounds of "How the hell does this not fall apart?"
The fact that you can take out the disc while the game is running makes me think of Monster Rancher. It would’ve been cool if you could access bonus content or get certain items on demand if you inserted a new disc into the slot while the game is running.
Some of the Dynasty Warriors games did this IIRC, but less "unlocking additional content" and more "a method to sell expansion packs that require the full game on console". The DW games eventually had to stop doing this due to a patent dispute IIRC.
Thanks for the excellent video. 5:55 actually helped me solve something about the Virtual Console release of Mario's Super Picross. The game was originally released in Japan only but was put on Wii Virtual Console in Japan and Europe in 2007, where 3 of the game's puzzles were replaced. One of the ones replaced was of The Scream, which I now know still would've been under copyright in Europe at the time. The game has also been rereleased on New Nintendo 3DS in 2016 and Switch Online in 2020 but it seems like they either forgot or didn't want to make yet another version of the rom just to change one puzzle back.
I saw the Bowser enemy TH-camr before they shutdown there youtube channel. They covered the debug menu and provided cheats to set what value the warp item takes you in 2010
So my GameCube’s disc drive is faulty after over twenty years of use, so sometimes during play sessions the game would stop, saying that there was an issue reading the disc. But out of all my games, this NEVER happened with Animal Crossing and i always wondered why, so after learning that the GameCube doesn’t need the disc to run because it fits in the RAM, it all makes so much sense now. I use my Wii to play GameCube games now, but I’ll always love my GameCube as it sits pretty on its shelf. Thank you for the info!
I remember seeing the whale once as a child, it scared me so badly and all the rumors online at the time made me think I was either imagining it or cursed
Hats off to you for translating that debug gyroid! Awesome video! I remember seeing the warp item in a really old video years ago that someone demonstrated for warping to a bunch of beta maps with cheats
I remember being said that this game didn't have building seeds, so to find out that it did is really exciting for me. Now I really want to play a glitched playthrough!
I recall a strange glitch I occured a long time ago when I was a kid about the whale. For some reason, while running around my town's acres, the whale seemed to have spawned in one of my town's rivers. I was running at the time and it startled me so I ended up scaring away so I didn't have a chance to try and catch it. I'm very confused as to what on earth could have caused that to happen. As a kid I didn't even know the whale or the island even existed so I thought it was just a glitchy big fish or something.
I remember the “taking the disc out” while playing being one of those nostalgic school ground rumors that actually turned out to be true and it blew my mind.
Animal Crossing New Leaf has and always will be my absolute favorite version, but I find this series on Animal Crossing super interesting as I find programming decisions and programming errors as a look back on history and things that defined the game.
Hey, I just discovered your channel today and I want to say I absolutely love it. I watched all your videos in one day and your dedication to this one game is not only extremely impressive but also extremely touching. I have a lot of fondness for this game, considering that it was a game that I played and cared about a Lot as a child (also gives me fond memories of my siblings), and it was definitely the game I played the most growing up. As a person who has, over the years, also fallen in love with this kind of content of in-depth game breakdowns and secrets, this channel has been an extremely pleasant surprise to come across, and has introduced me to the accomplishments and content of other people in the community like BrianMp16 and Cuyler. Watching all these videos brings back such fond memories and feelings, and with the new appreciation of these small things within the game, whether it's the coding quirks or the complicated processes in it. I'm also truly glad that you've been getting the attention you deserve for this content, and I hope more people who love this game like I do are able to find you as well. Keep up the good work, I'm looking forward to everything else you have to reveal about this game and will be eagerly watching your future videos as well !
One of most heartwarming comments I’ve gotten. Thank you so much! I’m always grateful to hear that people are still interested in this game and share the same passion for it. 🙂
You have no idea how much anxiety the entire whale segment of this vid caused me aha. I’ve had nightmares about that thing with every new AC game, meanwhile you nonchalantly walk up to it and even catch it… Bravest AC ‘tuber ever
A lot of Animal Crossing Facts videos rehash the same information that everyone knows; but your video was entertaining and I actually learned a lot of new stuff. Thanks for such a wonderful video!
ejecting the disc was fun as a kid. i tried that out on so many other gamecube games just to see if it would have the same effect but it didnt. and iirc if you did it after it loaded to the main menu it wouldnt have sound. its been over 20 years since ive done it so i might be incorrect on that last part. now the disc just lived in its case and i play it using my modded wii
Another fantastic video! I knew the whale existed but I was so surprised you were able to manipulate the game to actually catch it. Even though it wasn't catchable as an actual whale that was incredible, and the Able Sisters dialogue was so bizarre and unexpected. It was also really cool how that gyroid was able to do all those different functions in the testing world in the Japanese version. Also I could have SWORN I've seen a Resetti gag like the counting clicks one in an English animal crossing game. I am so sure I remember that. It must be used in the English version of another animal crossing game.
@@Hunter-R. That makes sense I saw it then, I would have seen it a lot then back in the day if it was in Wild World. I've played all American Animal Crossing mainline games (just specifiying that because I never played the N64 ones so I can't claim to have played them all unfortunately) but maybe Wild World the most out of all of them. Thanks for confirming this so I wouldn't be confused on where I remembered it forever lol. I played Wild World pretty much obsessively as a kid almost every single day. (I was really worried about villagers moving out)
I find it hilarious that when I clicked on this video I was thinking "What's he gonna do when he runs out of things to talk about?" just to have that answered 5 seconds later.

This is such a good video. I really didn’t think I would learn anything new and I’m only 2 minutes in finding out about removing the disc. Thanks so much!
i always thought the reason you got the gyroid face was because gyroids are stand-ins for Haniwa, and Haniwa were containers for the soul or something, so they're sort of like things without souls that are stand-ins for people, so when you are without your soul, you look like the Gyroids, or the Haniwa.
My immediate thoughts regarding warp item experimentation is wondering how it would interact with traveling to and from another town - Would the game warp you to the equivalent coordinate in the currently loaded town, or would it retain the memory of you having been in the other town and send you back there? Would the game simply crash? If it DID allow you to warp between towns, would the result change if you traveled back to your town from another, then removed the second memory card (and maybe replaced it with another one) and then warped with the item? Could be interesting to play around with.
i think that loading into a town would reset the warp id, so you probably can't jump back and forth between towns like that. even then, i suspect your entire town is "overwritten" in ram, so a warp to a-1 would always be a-1 of the loaded town.
A few parts of the gyroid translation seemed to have some slight issues, so in case it might help, a few fixes / remarks: -- This experiment plays the audio of the selected message. -> Experiment for conveying message emotion to sound. (Sounds like a test of the feature of communicating a 'message emotion' to the sound engine) -- Displaying letter (character) data -> Displaying letter data (The "letter" word here is the 'mailed document' kind of letter, not equivalent to 'character') -- Processing cursor; canceling experiment -> Cancellation of cursor processing experiment (Sounds like a test of whether you can 'cancel cursor processing' or not - maybe the 'impossible' message can't be mashed through?) -- At the end of this message, include the 'Press Button to End (%PB%)' prompt Do not include the 'Clear Screen (%CC%)' prompt -> Make sure not to put Button Wait (%PB%) or Screen Clear (%CC%) at the end of a message. (Sounds like a general warning to the script writers, that both of those codes would cause unwanted effects.)
Thanks for some input! I went over it again and made the document more accurate! Though, your final suggestion seems incorrect here, since the game does internally include that %PB% command at the end of that message. Thus, it doesn't make much sense for it to say it's not including both. Only the %CC% command is excluded and I'm pretty sure that's what the text is conveying after conferring with a few others.
I used to play Animal Crossing at the same time as my cousins with the disc trick. We had two memory cards and never really cared about trading or anything so it worked out really well for us. I was so proud when I found it out just from messing with the GameCube
The editing in this video was superb! Very interesting things talked about in the video too! I hope your not pushing yourself and having a great time editing and making these high quality videos :)
The fact that I only knew about half of these is impressive. Nice work! And if you ever do run out of things to talk about for Animal Crossing, I'd love to see you do in-depth analysis of other games. Not just AC either.
I SWEAR I saw the whale or some other HUGE glitched out fish inside of a waterfall crossing back and forth up and down the waterfall and the river one time legit as a kid. It only happened once maybe twice and it was so hard to fish up I never could.
I've been a fan of Animal Crossing for almost 2 decades and this video blew my mind! It's so interesting to see these discoveries being made. Amazing video

@@LysolPionex The Zelda code has no resemblance at all to Mario 64's, it's unclear why Miyamoto said something that made people think they were related - they just aren't. Whereas Animal Forest/Crossing reused everything possible from Zelda, which was a lot.
@@MrCheezeHuh. Maybe that's how they got OOT and MM ported over to the GameCube.
@@Toonrick12 Different approaches. OoT/MM are emulated. Animal Crossing was ported (although the graphics in particular might have a semi-emulation approach because the data was in N64 display list format? not sure)
the debug ui is similar as well
For the PAL region disc, the game requires the disc in the console or else it'll demand you insert the disc every time you enter or leave a building, like Nook's Cranny, or your house.
The game itself compresses to 80MB at the lowest, possibly due to the languages for the region.
That does make sense... PAL is basically just "not the US or Japan". Ofc there's going to be lots of languages
@CityLights-v6u It absolutely does, shame we don't benefit from the game being in RAM
Cant wait to see the "get enough rain to not get the radio" speedrun from brianmp16
I got Micro Mages running perfectly on the animal crossing emulator! It was so surreal seeing a modern NES game run in ACGC

"I couldn't find the translated text online so me and my friend translated it ourselves" I love how much you have done for this community and I can't wait to see what's next!!
The disc trick was my favorite. I'd rent Wind Waker from the video store and play for days after returning. 😂
This guy 😂
“What happened to debug Gyroid??”
“It… it dared to utter the word ‘Sega’ on a Nintendo console…”
The button clicking easter egg made a return in Wild World as well, and was included internationally
whaat! i didn't know that
ooh, we actually learned about the fact that basically all of AC fit in the gamecube's RAM because our gamecube's disk drive started dying, but would still read well enough at first, presumably just falling out of alignment over time while it ran, so Animal Crossing was the only gamecube game we could reliably play for a time until we got a new gamecube
Would LOVE to see more videos like this one
Might be an interesting thing to test! I haven’t tried upgrading the Nook Stores.
i wish they added the whale as an actual catchable fish in later games
Technically we have whale sharks

The fact there is always something hidden away inside the original Animal Crossing and its variations. As the game continues to get decompiled, I can only imagine what else is waiting to be discovered! Love your videos Hunter, looking forward to see more!

That gyroid face is pure nightmare fuel lmao imagine being a little kid and seeing this face when you turn around after loading a save.

That whale shadow was terrifying for some reason.
I already knew about: 1
I somewhat knew about: 9
NES emulation is easy, the difficult part is getting the mappers
Animal Crossing New Leaf has and always will be my absolute favorite version, but I find this series on Animal Crossing super interesting as I find programming decisions and programming errors as a look back on history and things that defined the game.
This was such an incredible video. Thank you for sharing. I loved the whale info the best as well as dropping buildings lol. Keep up the awesome work
Bless you for actually crediting the music 👍
This was a great video! A lot of fun facts and really nice editing. Your calm style suits Animal Crossing well.
Thank you so much! Means a lot! 🙂
A lot of Animal Crossing Facts videos rehash the same information that everyone knows; but your video was entertaining and I actually learned a lot of new stuff. Thanks for such a wonderful video!
there's a playstation rhythm game that takes advantage of disc ejection named vib ribbon to play cds
Correct. Said game was small enough to fit into the PS1's RAM (2 MBs) thus you were able to swap in a music disc.
@@Toonrick12 it took up like less than a 10th I believe
ejecting the disc was fun as a kid. i tried that out on so many other gamecube games just to see if it would have the same effect but it didnt. and iirc if you did it after it loaded to the main menu it wouldnt have sound. its been over 20 years since ive done it so i might be incorrect on that last part. now the disc just lived in its case and i play it using my modded wii
There’s quite a bit I know about this game, but you still succeeded in teaching me something I didn’t know. I’m impressed!
I believe the Resetti button-counter is used in Wild World on the DS! 🤔

Arapaima: "Hi Sisters!"
I find it hilarious that when I clicked on this video I was thinking "What's he gonna do when he runs out of things to talk about?" just to have that answered 5 seconds later.
Why did they make so many mapper chips instead of just licensing their own? Jesus Christ, Nintendo is insane
woah, a "10 things you didn't know" where I actually learned 10 things! haven't seen one of those in a while!
technically I knew two of the things, but I did learn new things about them :3
I'd love to see another continuation of this video in the future, it's always pretty interesting to hear all kinds of obscure stuff in Animal Crossing
6:12 this painting was over a hundred years old at that point and already wasn't in the public domain?
Copyright is such a pathetic joke, it needs to be abolished yesterday
This is such a good video. I really didn’t think I would learn anything new and I’m only 2 minutes in finding out about removing the disc. Thanks so much!
I always saw the gyroid face as a way to scare kids away from resetting while traveling.
i always thought the reason you got the gyroid face was because gyroids are stand-ins for Haniwa, and Haniwa were containers for the soul or something, so they're sort of like things without souls that are stand-ins for people, so when you are without your soul, you look like the Gyroids, or the Haniwa.
A few parts of the gyroid translation seemed to have some slight issues, so in case it might help, a few fixes / remarks:
--
This experiment plays the audio of the selected message. -> Experiment for conveying message emotion to sound.
(Sounds like a test of the feature of communicating a 'message emotion' to the sound engine)
--
Displaying letter (character) data -> Displaying letter data
(The "letter" word here is the 'mailed document' kind of letter, not equivalent to 'character')
--
Processing cursor; canceling experiment -> Cancellation of cursor processing experiment
(Sounds like a test of whether you can 'cancel cursor processing' or not - maybe the 'impossible' message can't be mashed through?)
--
At the end of this message, include the 'Press Button to End (%PB%)' prompt Do not include the 'Clear Screen (%CC%)' prompt
->
Make sure not to put Button Wait (%PB%) or Screen Clear (%CC%) at the end of a message.
Thank you for including subtitles!! It makes these videos much more accessible.
none of my curious itches went unscratched while watching this and i can’t thank you enough

I miss how how much character this series used to have. Your character being replaced with a gyroid if you dont come back from a visit properly and Resetti testing your patience and counting your button presses is so cute. The whale is such a fun easter egg too.
the limit to the amount of videos you can create for this game is only a limit of your creativity. 2034 could contain titles such as "Lore Deep Dive of the Animal Crossing Wild World Game Manual" and I'd still be here watching it
