    Thank you for the brief, detailed and extremely helpful tutorial. I recently switched to recording with OBS instead, and my sound quality instantly suffered. This gets it back on par with what I was recording with before (ScreenFlow for Mac). Since I want the flexibility to move to Linux or Windows again in future, I wanted to move into tools that are cross-platform rather than only available on one.
    Have an excellent day! :)

    Great video, and thank you for being clear, to the point and brief. Once I made those changes I noticed that my Auto Mixer didn't pick background noise any more. However, when I tried to record something to test the new settings. I don't know what happened but my voice started to cutting in and out.

    • @strfkr197
      @strfkr197 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Voice cutting in and out is most likely a problem caused by mixing. Compressors and limiters will do that (they're meant to in music production.) Play around with the settings more; do note that what order you add these plug ins in, is important. Noise gate, then compressor, then limiter is very different to limiter, then compressor, then noise gate. Try those out, I feel the uploader in this vid has a pretty good order. All that's left is for you to check out your settings, and see how it works with your mic and desktop audio.

    That's not what phase cancellation means. Phase cancellation happens when you record something with multiple microphones, and since the sound arrives at each microphone at a slightly different time, the captured waveforms might not line up perfectly and might cancel each other out (You can see it in the picture that one waveform has a positive (+1) amplitude, while the other one has a negative (-1) one (-1+(+1)= 0) resulting in a phasey or hollow sound with decreased low-frequency content. It has nothing to do with distortion, white noise or instruments masking each other. This issue can be fixed either by inverting the polarity on one of the tracks (which flips one of the waveforms upside down) or by ensuring that all of the microphones have the same distance from the sound source (this way the sound will arrive at each microphone at roughly the same time).
    If you record your voice with a single microphone, there's not gonna be any phase cancellation. Inverting the polarity isn't gonna make any difference.

    I think you can leave out the phase invert effect since I doesn't make any sense in most cases. The moment you invert the phase you will get phasing issues with other signals. Most noise based sounds won't benefit from this option. Maybe some tune based sounds (like music) can benefit but like I said it will most likely create some issues somewhere else in the frequenzy spectrum.

  • @BarbsCozyCorner
    @BarbsCozyCorner ปีที่แล้ว

    Thank you, this was useful, my sound on my blue yeti was always a bit off, like everyone else that has one sounded better 😅.... I added the invert polarity and changed my noise gate settings to match yours and it is better, I think.

    Hmmm you might want to clarify that this is about the microphone sound quality in your title. I came here looking for how to fix the quality of the OTHER sounds that OBS records. For example, when I am recording my gameplay and then listen to the clip afterwards, the recorded game sounds/music sound much lower quality than what I originally heard.

    VoidRealms- thank you for the excellent summary. I am wondering if you have any ideas what might be causing my situation: I record film clips with OBS, so I generally don't have any audio processing enabled on OBS itself (since it is recording processed audio, as opposed to my voice). My issue is that when I import the clips into my video editor, they sound louder and harsher, without any effects or changes being applied to them or the audio track in the editor. I can always turn down the volume, but I would rather understand what is causing the discrepancy in the first place. If you have any ideas, please let me know, and thanks again!
