    I wish more people would learn about what compressors/limiters are. I also wish programs like OBS would include a gain reduction meter in the settings because sometimes it can feel like you're shooting a moving target in the dark.

      2 years later youtubers and streamers still do not know what compressors/limiters are. which is why i do not watch any of the popular people. all they do is scream and my ears hurt so no thanks. "ManlyBadAssHero" i like cause hes calm with a nice voice to listen too and not need to worry if he's going to blow out ear drums.

      hah, the perks of being a musician/producer are coming in handy for me, one of my top priorities in my setup was a good mic, and flawless audio settings!
      I got an sE Dynacaster for about 280 bucks, in the same kinda league as the renowned SM7B but not quite as expensive, though still pricey, and imho looks WAY cooler and has a better/cleaner hinge mechanism without that extra small wire between the mic and the XLR port, which I never liked about the SM7B. Tbh for best audio I would record raw audio (no OBS plugins), edit the footage without touching audio, and then edit audio separately with the tools I'm familiar with in Logic X for best results, but that makes things so much more long-winded, so if I can get good results directly in OBS and only do minor tweaking if necessary in Premiere Pro, then I'd rather do that and skip the whole Logic process

  • @TommyViper
    @TommyViper ปีที่แล้ว +4

    This really helped a lot! I used plugins in OBS for my SM7B, but it always sounded a tad distorted, even with a limited on. Turns out I had too much analog gain! Turning that down and increasing it on the digital side fixed it right up. Anyone can edit in post, but you can't edit a livestream and everything needs to be done on the fly. This helps! Thank you so much!

  • @aigener8
    @aigener8 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Just wondering, why don't you use the gain on the Compressor filter instead? Is it not as good as using just the Gain filter? Ive always just used the Compressor filter with output gain upped on there but yeah, I still get distorted mic audio but that's because I probably need to lower the threshold. Though I am wondering if I should be using your set up instead? Not sure what the difference is.

    Also, I'd love for you to show off the fact that you can put VST plugins in OBS! I find the RX-7/RX-8 voice denoise to be quite useful when I'm running a livestream for an event. Gates are also fantastic.

      I was actually just playing with this a little bit earlier because I want to make an "OBS mic settings" video, but was shocked that there was no EQ. Was able to get some nice use out of PRODS and PROQ3 from Fab Filter. Will have to try adding in my RX7 plugins to see how that affects the latency of the audio.

    • @candinmuniz3225
      @candinmuniz3225 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Podcastage2 I was shocked to find the latency relatively unaffected. However, it's worth noting I tend to run livestreams and not host them, so audio delay doesn't really come up in what I'm doing.

    I have been struggling trying to get my Blue Yeti Pro audio to sound decent using Streamlabs OBS to record external audio (BYP hooked up to laptop with USB, no audio interface yet). This helped. My voice volume fluctuates where I end up clipping on things I shouldn't clip on because, well, let's face it, I have no idea what I'm doing audio recording-wise yet. Between your Blue Yeti Pro test video I watched last night from 2017 and this I just did a test of these filters and the mic placement from that other video, and I can already hear a difference. Lot's for me to tweak but this makes me feel a lot better about using the equipment I currently have till I'm ready to take the next step up. Thanks!

    So I think what I did was really weird and used lots of different things to get my voice to be louder in the mix while recording.
    I don't edit or mess with the game sound, I only edit the gameplay down to 15 minutes like 1-2 hour long recordings with lots of commentary,.
    I would not have the time to do so to go in and make things that sound lower higher, I have something setup to auto do that for me while I speak.
    I already use my mic on a low gain, at like 30-35 volume and use a program to remove background noise from the microphone, before, it even hits obs.
    I have no idea, if my audio sounds good though, I don't have, the right equipment to monitor sound, even headphones don't work the same it seems, it's hard to find the problem.
    I tried to get my microphone volume to match, other channels, that do the same content, I do, they seem to boost it, sounds way better then, what I'm doing, it sounds, even louder, then mine, people just watch them anyway because they have waaaaaaay more views.
    I think, they don't boost it live, that's the problem, I'm trying to boost the microphone live and add base and boost, treble and auto leveling live within obs, So I don't have to go in and bring the levels up, I think I'm going about it the wrong way but I'm not sure.
    A few people have seen my videos, I get no feed back, so I can't tell, if my audio levels are good or not, I applied this to the end of whatever, I do to boost my audio and it sounds better for sure and does not clip into the red anymore.
    I use things to bring down the game sound and then boosts the game sound so it sounds better overall,. but had the issue that my microphone even though it was hitting the red it would still sound lower then the game it made no sense at all to me.
    I could not figure out how to get my microphone to sound clear and louder then the game sound.
    I think this might have done the trick, not sure though, I will have to record a video, but this along with other things might just be what I needed.
    I used a windscreen, but that makes my voice sound muffled, I have one of those pop foam caps, I don't really know how that works since it seems like air /plosives still gets into the microphone " I don't talk directly into it" even background noise seems to get through, I don't think that is made to stop that, I have gates setup to stop it but they seem to fail the louder I get or if I speak normal it gets weird.
    I have thick hand made scrap Duro foam panels cheaply made around my room, it has helped with echo/reverb. I just don't have the money to buy anything else at the moment. I use a Audio Technica AT2035 xlr, I think when I bought it 6 years ago, it sounded way better then it does now.
    Another thing is it could be doing all this on one pc is causing software to fail.
    I'm thinking of using a old laptop doing everything on that then sending the audio through voice meter banana to my gaming pc
    when I get my stream pc setup, I would be able to do the same, I have a 2700x gaming pc and old amd 9590 pc that does not like windows 10 and runs High cpu usage, it's weird it would not let me record with obs would always get high encoding errors off cpu/gpu encoding, with a 750 ti gpu, I might get a cheap 980 or 1080 to fix that issue.

    We do a live stream for our church, we first used an USB audio out on our sound board but when we upgraded our computer, the new computer wasn't 100% compatible with the sound board's usb. We ended up just using a normal left/right RCA cable audio out from soundboard into line in on the PC for our audio. Voices now sound fine but once the the piano starts we get for lack of better terms a tinny sounding distortion? Any advice?

      @@WyattOShea Here is a quick runddown:
      1. Open your DAW and select ASIO as device class in audio hardware. Select "ASIO4ALL v2" as device.
      2. Configure device, press advanced view down in the bottom right corner and expand your interface and VB-Audio cable.
      3. Select your mic and VB-Audio Cable Out. Here is what I selected imgur.com/a/hbDwbhL
      4. Set I/O buffer to the same number in asio and DAW (I use 512).
      4. Now select those (or default) on your track, and arm for record + monitor input. Now your mic should be outputted to VB-Audio OUtPUT in windows.
      Now you can add effects to your track :)

(I’m not smart in the slightest bit when it comes to the settings like these lol) been searching months to find something and I just found this video. Will change it tomorrow regardless of a reply to see how it works

    Can you compose a guide to nectar 3 vst with obs studio? I recently bought rode podmic and audient evo4, I don't really like the sound) The sound of the interface is set to 100%, but the smart gain is set to about 95%, but it seems to me that the sound is not saturated)Thank You=)

    Yo, can u review the cable creation sound card, in Amazon the product description states that it uses a HS-100b chip and I did some search and turns out the chip puts out around 4.5 volts so if u could test out the cable creation sound card it would be great. Thanks.

    Do this only work with microphones like that? Because it made it worse for my headset microphone. :( I just can't figure out good settings for it at all.

    Question: why when I record a music band session in obs it sounds way cleaner and fuller than when I live stream on TH-cam?!?! 🤷🏽‍♂️

    Aren’t you raising the noise floor by 17db with this process?

      No more than increasing your gain by 17dB on your interface.

    I used the same settings as him but for some reason it's still peaking. Does the type of mic matter?

    I just notice that everytime when set a Noise Suppression filter in OBS Studio it cause the mic to be clipping when talking too loud or screaming, I dont know if its a bug or they need to fix it

    Hi there! I love your videos and they helped me a lot improve the sound quality of my stream. But even using everything explained in this video I get weird "muffling" when I get really lound. I normally speak really quietly while streaming, but often get overly excited and scream. it's been hard to balance the lows and highs so they both sound good. I'm having this weird "muting" of my voice when I get too loud, like someone pushed the gain way low and you cant hear me anymore... and i cant tell if it's my actual AKG P120 mic clipping, or my Elgato Wave XLR having too little headroom, or something with my OBS settings... and i dont know how to go about isolating the problem. Do you have a video about how to debug this? thanks!
