    IMPORTANT: lots of you skip the compressor part & just take my settings. THIS DOES NOT WORK. I know I mentioned the word 'presets', which is why you all skip that part, but it's only a part of the settings that's similar for everyone. Make sure you follow the compressor & expander part. Those are the most important ones of this video. Cheers!

I'm not sure if this is it, but having a girls voice seemed to make a big difference in how I needed to equalize. I still don't think its quite right but I'm sure I'll figure it out!

    Good tips about compressor and expander, but:
    1) For better noise reduction, configure your mic to 48000Hz/16bit format and position RNNoise first in the list.
    2) RNNoise uses CPU and not very CPU intensive, but very effective.
    3) Gate can be very useful too.
    Noise reduction -> Gate/Expander -> Compressor -> EQ -> Limiter

    I can't express how thankful I am for this. I've been fiddling with VSTs (reafir, noise gate), RN Noise, RTX Voice. I also have a SM7B. I always used the Compressor, but I had never used the Expander before. This eliminated my need for a Noise Gate. My voice actually comes through properly and I don't have to worry about keyboard clicks. My voice is pretty bassy and low, so it would get cut out from time to time. Right now, I just have those two filters applied since I don't have need for EQ. Thank you again. Love you 3000.

      I have only tested krisp, rtx voice, and rnnoise. rnnoise seemed like the one that least affected audio quality. I am currently using an at2020, and is currently doing great at blocking blue switches + electric fan noise. I only use it for discord and comms.
      Of course, if there is something better out there, I am lending my ear. :D

    This was a quick, thorough, effective tutorial. It was easy to follow and worked like a charm I will say for anyone who sees this, make sure you listen and tune your own mic and dont copy his exact values for threshold, gain, and even attack. If you find that when tuning the expander you had to turn your threshold wayyy up to get rid of keyboard clicks and background noise, then you may have had trouble with your mic not activating as soon as you start speaking…. If that is the case adjust your attack on your Expander filter, if your words are being cut off at the end of your speaking, then adjust your Release in your Compressor filter. Good Luck 👍🏽 and clean sound to All!!!!!!

  • @Zidakuh

    Also, remember that the order of the plugins/filters actually matter! It goes from top-to-bottom.
    Typically to get a very good low background noise sound, go in this order:
    Noise suppression
    Expander or noise gate
    EQ
    Compressor
    Limiter
    This will most likely fix the constant hiss of the mic too, since that was boosted by the compressor in the video, before it was suppressed.
    Just a small helpful tip from an audio engineer.
    Aside from that, great video! The way to set the compressor settings is actually really clever. I usually load up Reaper and make a preset there, and just load that same VST into OBS, but this really makes it easier.
    EDIT: Compressor and EQ can be interchanged, and sometimes rightfully so, since a very agressive EQ curve can potentially affect how the compressor clamps down on the sound source. Test and see what sounds best to you.
    Also add a limiter at the very end of the filter chain, to avoid unexpected peaks to clip your sound. Even if it looks like it doesn't do anything or it doesn't react.
    I would also look up something like the Dead Duck channel strip, since it has basically all the processing in a single VST that you'd need. (Use the Dead Duck Channel 2, as the other one will add 5ms latency to your signal)
    Sidenote: it is fine to add the same filter more than once, if you need e.g. multiple EQ's or multiple compressors. But do be aware that in this case, less is more.
    If you have to use 5 EQ's to get your mic to sound good, then it's probably about time to get a different mic.

    You definitely evolved qualitywise and experiencewise but I must say compared to your 2021 video the compositon or the arrangement of your filters really took a hit in quality. Your filter video from 2021 really made a huge difference for me & my mic (Blue Yeti).
    Again, I really liked your last video regarding that topic, though I think this new one isn't quite as good and expedient as the last one. Now it could still be on me if I havent fully grasped everything from this video but yeah. Seriously no hate, just some feedback from a fan of your videos that seem to be your ultimate passion.
    Cheers :)

      Yea i feel like guide is little bit rushed in 2021 video he showed lots of details like showing the order that filter should be and in this video he didnt do it.

      No offend taken at all mate! I tried to make it more concise indeed, cause I felt like I was repeating myself a lot in the previous one.
      As far as know, the only difference with that one is that I used a gain filter first (which I now realized isn't needed when changing gain with the compressor) and that I didn't mention the order (which is a big mistake indeed).
      Is there anything else I missed? I could try to fix it with a pinned comment, that's why I'm asking.

    Damn, my mic quality is amazing right now even w/o vst plugin (i tried and it sounds worst instead so i turned it off)
    Now the question i wanted to ask, how to make this system-wide instead of obs only? Wouldn't it be great after we set everything up and let other apps to have the same quality?
    Please do a guide for that! That would be sick!

    • @nexcellent
      @nexcellent 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You could use OBS to set your mic up how you like it sounding then copy them over to Equalizer APO since the UIs for all of them will be the same and EQ APO will make it systemwide

    • @comkioxd
      @comkioxd 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@nexcellent apo only lets you change the eq of your mic though, it doesn't have a limiter or a compressor, noise suppression or anything like that

    • @nexcellent
      @nexcellent 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@comkioxd I'm not talking about just base apo though basically any vst you can add in OBS you can use in eq apo aswell, just download a limiter vst and use reacomp if you need a compressor vst too. You can also get reafir in OBS and copy the chunk data for it into the config file on apo to get the exact reafir noise profile setup. If you need further help there's tuts on yt

    Raising frequencies below 60hz (especially 20hz) is a complete mistake. Most people use devices (headphones or low-level speakers) that can't even make those sounds heard. Increasing those frequencies without the necessary analysis increases the softness of the voice but lets out the resonances generated by a possible untreated environment. A similar thing occurs with higher frequencies. Most people struggle to perceive frequencies higher than 16000hz. Above 20000hz we touch frequencies that the human being is not really able to perceive.

    Pretty useful and detailed tutorial. However one thing you got wrong in the noise suppression part is that "Speex" and "RNNoise" are always available, while "NVIDIA Noise Removal" requires an NVIDIA card and only shows up when you have NVIDIA Broadcast SDK installed. Love your contents anyways 😉❤️
    -----
    Edit:
    Speex and RNNoise are running on the CPU and not based on AI, while NVIDIA's stuff uses your GPU and is AI-based.

    • @BenTheGreat
      @BenTheGreat 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@gagelol well, you can use rtx voice with GTX cards and Nvidia broadcast with rtx cards (dumb I know) so it might work the same in OBS and you might be able to use Nvidia noise suppression for both GTX and rtx cards. I'm not sure though I have a 3060 🤷

      The bottom line is is that there are software out there that can seriously change one of these cheaper low-end mics into sounding a lot better than when it would initially, but in reality a $400 sm7 bee is a thousand times better than anything you can get out there not only that but pretty much anything over $100 is going to get you close to this guy's my quality mind you majority of this video even the part where he talks about adjusting the my quality he still using the $400 microphone he only ever uses the cheap one for like 4 seconds and this is like every video he does with these cheap microphones he has like six or seven videos saying oh perfect OBS settings to make your mic sound professional and blah blah blah blah blah he's like a thousand clickbait titles in the end like I said before if you just save up 200 bucks and buy you a good dollar microphone you are never going to be disappointed with it you don't have to buy the 400 dollar sm7b but when you start getting into microphones like that where you have three or four $200 microphones the moment when you get something like an sm7b where it's just God like compared to everything else you start to realize oh yeah there is a difference but it is not the difference for the audience it's a difference for you and that's what I've come to realize is that it it doesn't really matter how good you can get your mic sounding as long as you can get sounding good enough at a certain point that no one could complain about it or rather I mean just anybody could just complain about it
