      Looking forward to the model Y coming to the UK. The only things with the m3 for me is the boot opening entrance is too small for my needs and I find it the ride height a bit too low and I believe the model Y will correct both of these. Of course these are only my personal preferences.

    • @scottwills4698
      @scottwills4698 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@danielstoicamusic I came from a few BMW’s, I like that the car size is similar to a 3 series but the interior size is similar to a 5 series (because no engine). It’s faster than most 3 series and costs circa 1p per mile to run. The handling is very good, it’s quite heavy but very surefooted. The Charging is no issue at all really (superchargers can get busy at lunch time but you figure out when to charge). The compromise is the build fit finish isn’t quite up to Audi, Mercedes, BMW etc but if that doesn’t bother you it’s a fantastic car.

      @@scottwills4698 I got my model 3 2021 three weeks ago from california, I have to say in amercia they do not care soo much abut details, so there is few issues with bumper etc. But service is taking care of it and like you said it's not mercedes or audi quality but it's fantastic car overall and I'm the type who love simplicity and this car give clean simply smooth interior.

    Great video Bjorn!
    The last 3 minutes can be summarized with: "Highly encourage you to test drive one for yourself. People often feel like they're really easy and fun to drive. I sure do."
    Trying to discuss the intangibles of driving preferences with strangers is impossible, like trying to nail JELL-O to a tree. You did a fine job, but since it's all subjective, they really just need to test drive it to know with any confidence, whether it's for them or not.
    Love your cold weather expertise, and the fact that Tesla's are more efficient in winter than many other cars in summer, is VERY convincing for the naysayers that I've met who have anxiety about electric cars in the winter time.

    1. Absence of instrument cluster in front of you is very pleasant when driving long distance on night. Put on automated cruise control (operate as designed and required). There is absolute darkness on front dash and no irritating led and lights. If people require speed display on front they can mount mobile phone with scanMyTesla app open. That shows speed, Power op etc. It also has HUD mode.
    2. Another feature which is very useful is voice control. It is very good in understanding the commands as mentioned below.

    • @SwiftHDX
      @SwiftHDX 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I'll be honest here, I had a 2012 e350 CDI, a 2016 740d and an 07 Phaeton (Which I still have) before getting my 3 Performance, all in the space of 9 months. With the merc I did a 1300KM round trip within a day, all while cruising at 240kmh in complete comfort. With the BMW I did a weekend trip where I covered 1100KM, also crusing at 180-220kmh in absolute comfort. The Phaeton I haven't had that long but the comfort tops the other 2 Germans. Despite the brilliant Supercharger network, if you're looking for a car that can do long journeys really well and conveniently, a Tesla might be your best bet in the electric car world, but they aren't ready yet. Real life consumption, without driving any faster than 120kmh you'll get between 350 and 400km, that's if you go from 100 to 0.
      If you're looking to compare the Model 3 to your BMW, I can tell you right now, don't do it because you will be disappointed (My mistake). If you're looking to save costs, it will take you 10 years before you break even after purchasing the car (The car isn't free). If you're looking for the same comfort, quality, range, there's absolutely no comparison. The 520d is just such a solid car. The Tesla is a technological masterpiece but when it comes down to the car itself, it's quite far behind. If you look at everything closer you can pick out their lack of experience in manufacturing and their cost cutting measures quite easily. Also, the Model 3 definitely isn't the quietest car around, especially coming from a 520d that's the first thing you will notice on the motorway.
      The auto headlights and wipers are mediocre at best, the wipers will especially be annoying when it rains. The auto headlights maybe not so (They blind other drivers instead), but the fact that they don't turn at all, no cornering lights (In Europe, new headlights) is disappointing. Shame, because they're quite bright.
      Otherwise definitely a fun car to drive, but best usable up to 30% battery, because that's where bigger power limitations begin (Already noticeable at 75%, only gets worse from there).
      I was actually planning on selling my Phaeton, but now am looking to keep it for a while longer and eventually get rid of the Tesla instead.

      @@arribus30 Agreed, but I think the model 3 offers the best option for having a fully electric car that's nice looking, has interesting technology and is priced similar to an entry level ICE luxury car such a BMW 3 series ...BUT.....my understanding is that you have to be willing to accept, from what I've seen here on TH-cam that there may be some quality issues such as panel gaps, poor paint, touch screens gone blank etc...how prevalent these issues are I will not know until I own, main stream luxury car manufacturers electric offerings are very expensive at the moment all in around €80/100k +

    I greatly appreciate your opinions based on the immense tests that you do not only Teslas but other brands. My only constraint is the price. I know that using an ICE is more expensive, especially if the EV is charged at home (I have a garage and I can but there´s not the case for everyone), but 60,000 euros, price in Portugal, for an M3LR (the only one I consider) is a lot and the charging network is still very poor (although I only rarely travel over 500 km in one trip despite traveling a lot). I am thinking of changing my car and it will surely be for an EV, but as long as their prices do not drop, not only Tesla, I will hardly do so in the near future (2-3 yrs). Price parity is lagging despite the price of batteries I have been dropping for the past 3 or 4 years. Until then I will be watching your videos and fine-tuning my knowledge with them. For that, thanks.

    Agree completely. Got myself a M3 SR+ 2021 end of December.
    Came from a Honda Clarity Plug-In Hybrid, my EV gateway drug. Tried to go to a fossil car (got a great deal on an Audi A5 premium plus convertible), but I just couldn't take it. I went from 2 gas station trips in 2 years for in town driving to several per month, plus idling exhaust, plus, plus... and this made me come back to Bjorn's videos after nearly a year without looking at any Tesla vids. This was mid December 2020. The heat pump and extreme efficiency in cold was very convincing, because temps are cold-ish in North Carolina for about 4-5 months a year. The kicker was the supercharger network, fast charging speeds, and more than acceptable range in the SR+. I 100% don't need the Long Range or Performance for more range.
    Bottom line - exactly Bjorn's comments - what sold me were:
    1) SR+ at 220-230 usable miles - waaaayyyy more than enough for nearly all my driving, except for long trips, but the
    2) Supercharger network has amazing coverage throughout the Eastern US, everywhere I am interested in going, there's a supercharger and
    3) Supercharger stops are very fast - longest was 25 minutes - just enough time to stop for a bathroom break, get some snacks and a drink and get in the car to see it's almost done - perfect and finally
    4) Efficiency is just stupid good - it's been averaging 30-50F temperatures here since I got it, lowest is 20F and highest was pushing 60F and my average Wh/Mi is 242 since taking delivery. Can't wait to see what it does in summer!
    Get one, you won't regret it.
    Bonus - don't pay for a bunch of extras at the start, wait to see what you *need*. After a week, I realized I absolutely needed quality floor mats and I got Tuxmats, which are incredible. I had the 3D Maxpider in the Clarity and they were nice, but I couldn't get them *completely* clean, even with car wash wand. With these, just wipe down with a wipe or towel and done. Still haven't had the need for a trunk mat, but probably will get one. So far I've needed nothing else because the 2021 upgrades cover everything (matte black console, wireless charging pads built in, comes with a 32GB Tesla USB for sentry mode (don't need to buy your own), etc.).
    Again, just buy one and enjoy, you won't regret it.

    Great review. Your testing is the gold standard of EV testing at the moment. One minor remark and feedback: Maybe you could compare the displayed consumption with kwh recharged. Some testers discovered Teslas displayed consumptions does actualy underreport the used kwh. (even after correcting the overreporting of distance in the display)

    Thanks, Bjorn.
    Great summary.
    Don't forget, the purchase price of an EV over ICE cars is still an issue for many people, at least here in North America.
    Tesla even more so in the USA, as they've used up their Federal incentives since they've sold so many EVs.
    Hopefully, the price delta will reduce quickly and EVs will be even more attractive.

    Fair review. Here's a small review I can provide with some authority: I bought a Porsche Macan in 2017 and a Model 3 dual motor in 2018. I hardly drive the Macan anymore, and may replace it with a Y. Or replace the 3 with a Y. My guess this situation would not be much different than the car I had before the Macan - a Porsche Cayman S (the two-seater, not the Cayenne). I may replace the Macan with a Y, but a Mustang, Polestar, or Taycan would be more interesting. Sadly, the range and charging network situation are still unfavorable for those cars. I may hold out for a Cybertruck.

    Thanks for your outstanding detailed review, I'm a big fan of your channel...off topic, I would like to hear your opinion (or anybody else's opinion) on Nio battery swapping/battery as a service BaaS business model coming from a practical EV driver/tester as the company seems to double down on it.....to me it sounds like a really bad idea when the superchargers and battery technology are improving rapidly swapping batteries will become redundant real fast

    • @andymurray8007
      @andymurray8007 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It seems to me battery swapping would work great if it was so common you could get away with a smaller battery most of the time, swap to a larger one for a road trip, and then back for regular driving. That would require a huge infrastructure network and battery standardization, neither one of which are likely to happen anytime soon.

    Super useful Bjørn! The new M3 LR charges slowly and the battery capacity is not as large as the older M3. Perhaps I should order a M3 Performance (with Panasonic battery) with 18 inch wheels to have better range and charging speed. That leaves me with one question: is there a big difference in efficiency between an M3 P with 18 inch wheels and an MR LR with same size of wheels?

    When people talk about "Oh no, a bumper of a Model 3 fell off! Bad quality!" just think back to how many times you see a bumper lying beside a flooded section of road. Maybe as Europeans we're a bit more aware of this so it happens less? I live in the UK and flooded roads are very common here, we know the basic rules of going slow so you don't fill your bumper with water and rip it off, 'flooding your engine' isn't an issue though at least! :)
