    When you make repeted incompleted charges, the buffer starts to grow. It goes back to 2.70.kwh once you do a full slow charge up to 100%. I had the buffer at 4.70 kwh after 5 or 6 incompleted charges, it reset itself back to 2.70 after a full charging.

      @@mikolajmacioszek Do you have a Model 3 with an LFP battery? Because i think this applies only to this type of battery.

    • @pauldale260
      @pauldale260 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, could you explain what this buffer is please? Is it 'hidden capacity' of the battery, or something like that? Thanks...

    • @adrianleitch6996
      @adrianleitch6996 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@pauldale260 Yep you got it. a reserved hidden capacity of the battery. The '60kWh' Model 3 new is generally rated as 57.5kWh usable 60.5kWh actual with a 3kWh hidden buffer. various things like cold or heavy loads will somewhat lower the efficiency of the battery which means you would not be able to extract the full 60.5kWh, so they leave a buffer to account for this, otherwise in some scenarios you might run out with like 10% shown battery left and this buffer tries to prevent that.
      It also ensures that if you are driving at 5 to 10% or so you will still have decent performance, as otherwise you would be severely limited in how hard you could push the car.
      In warm temperature conditions with a newish car in gentle driving, you can often run the car past 0% for up to around 20km.

    • @adrianleitch6996
      @adrianleitch6996 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@mikolajmacioszek So regular 100% charging on an AC charger is generally intended for SR+/RWD 2021 or 2022 (LFP battery) models, though even non-LFP models should be charged to 100% every now and then, like a few times a year for calibration purposes.

    I had the same behavior with my TM3 LR of 07/2019, during a 2000m downhill (col du grand St. Bernard between Italy and Switzerland), 30% left, battery warm enough (30°C) and 25-30 kW regen limit at the end. So it’s not limited to the SR+ or the LFP or LG battery

      @@krisk8375 I didn’t noticed crazy motor temperature. Around 40°C. I guess if motor or inverter was in cause, it would then try to use both motors to regen like it does on snow, so it’s probably on the battery side

      @adrianleitch6996 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks I was wondering if it was similar on non-LFP models. If you think about it fast DC charging often is known to reduce battery life. It's kind of similar if you are driving mountainous highways often with full regen pushing say 20-50kWh in to the battery for long periods and not limited, so this would be done for battery longevity purposes I assume.

    450km is fantastic actually. With LFP battery that gives you 450km every morning when you wake up!!! Here in South West France we have a typical limit of 80km/hr speed limits (of course the Autoroute is quicker at 130km/hr). Mostly though I would achieve 130Wh/km I think for my daily driving.
    For my occasional long drive to the UK I need 750km to the Ferry at Dieppe. It is quite possible that I could do that journey with just 1 stop if I take my time. That's incredible.
    How often do I drive more than 400km without a stop? Never. I think the future is here.
    I think this LFP Standard Range makes more sense than the Long Range for me. I like having that 100% charge always available and no hassle of wondering how much to charge and whether I am damaging my battery.

    Nice video Bjorn to see what an EV is capable of when driving slow and efficiently. Might be interesting to focus on the tire/rim aspect. I think especially the tire has a lot of influence. Sports tires such as the Michelin Pilot Sport have a lot higher resistance while driving. Might be interesting to test out tires once and check the range. For example the Goodyear Efficientgrip Performance 2 is said to be very fuel efficient and have a low rolling resistance or for example Michelin Energysaver or Continental Eco Contact. Really curious what difference can be measured in range and consumption between different tires. For an EV owner a couple of % more efficiency can mean a lot.

    I found altitude change had a much bigger effect on consumption than I expected when I went from France to Italy in 2019. Abetterrouteplanner dId a good job for me and it was slightly better that Tesla nav was back then. Luckily there was a huge SuC site in the middle of the Alps. It started off saying I might not make it to Genoa, but as I dropped down towards Milan, that warning evaporated. Plenty of flexibility in 400+ km range for real world SuC hopping.

      you like driving (and do you ever?) 5 hours without taking a break? Then the SR is not for you. If you (like me) like 3 hours of driving with a 15-25min stop then this car may be the one for you. I just traded in my AmpereE (Bolt) for a M3SR+. AmpereE does have a bit more range on 100% battery but in almost 4 years I never did 100% -> approx.empty in one go. By the time I get to 250-300km of driving, I need to get out for a bit. And my new (1 year old) M3SR+ is going to do that for me at lower energy costs.

    You do know that other BEVs can take over 200kW of regen and do not get regen limited on long downhills. And there have been plenty of tests done in Norway where all cars reach their WLTP range no problem.
    For people driving around mountains it is useful to figure out a rule of thumb for their car about the altitude, something like 1km altitude = 10-15% of battery. If your car has good regen and good brake-pedal-regen you will easily recover almost all of it going down. Sure, if you do that 10 times, you will loose some power, but 1-2 mountains will be fine.
