Valve Does its Best to Fix Launchers
steamdeckhq.com/news/proton-9...
The next stable update for Proton has arrived, and it brings with it tons and tons of game fixes, new playable titles, extra controller support for different launchers, and much more. The launchers themselves are for specific titles rather than other storefronts, and this includes Fallout 3 and 4, Clustertruck, Skyrim, and two of the older Tomb Raider games. This means you should be able to use your controller to navigate the launchers instead of needing to use the touchscreen or trackpads.
Steam Deck Third Party Screen Abandoned?
According to users on the DeckHD Discord server, there have been a lot of people who have purchased the screen within the last month and a half and have heard of no updates regarding their orders. On top of that, almost all the support tickets that were submitted went silent, making people a bit worried about their products and whether they were ever going to get them. It got so bad that a lot of individuals started thinking that DeckHD was an abandoned project. Well, luckily, that isn't the case, though there are still some issues to be wary of.
According to Francisco_, a staff member on the DeckHD Discord server, the project has not been abandoned and isn't dead at all. They were in the final stages of automating everything for DeckHD. After I got his messages, Rema, another DeckHD staff member, posted an announcement to the server, going into more detail. A warehouse relocation caused shipping delays, and I reassured everyone that all orders would be fulfilled and shipped within 1-2 weeks. As for customer support, it is currently limited.
Response: Warehouse relocated and there have been delays in production and shipping caused by that move.
Shadow of the ErdTree is more demanding than base game
steamdeckhq.com/news/elden-ri...
Found that our recommended 30 FPS settings for the base game do the job 90% of the time, but for some of the bigger areas and bosses, I did find lowering some settings to help slightly. So, with most of the settings on low and a couple on medium or high, I could keep a stable 30 FPS in the open world with some minor drops in boss battles or when a lot of effects are on the screen. This is all at a resolution of 1280x800 as well, so everything looks crisp. You can lower the resolution to 1152x720 to mitigate some of these drops, but it wasn't enough to justify a change.

the truth is, with this launchers, pirates have a better experience than customers that actually pay
Pirating on the steam deck is absolutely horrible and is just a pain to do compared to windows
@@mostcoolkid78Really? How does it compare?
@@mostcoolkid78not really, just download and point steam to the exe and you’re golden
@@Lestibournes I’ve obviously pirated on both windows and Steamdeck but If a game isnt available on steam or I already have it on gog/epic I’ll just buy it on steam because it’s so much more annoying. And that’s with authentic games, with pirated games on steam you also gotta fine the right one as you can’t really use repacks and they aren’t designed for linux
@@LestibournesPretty easy same process as pirating on windows except you have to run the installer using proton/wine. I use a software called Bottles to run the installer install it then choose the exe to start the game and add it to steam, after that you don't have to touch the desktop again
The launcher problem is 100% a sloppy developer problem and the best Valve can do is work around it and make them as easy to interact with as possible.
sloppy publisher
Just ordered my steam deck Oled yesterday I am super excited
Enjoy! I got the og deck and love it. second best handheld I own.
It’ll be atleast a week before u can put it down trust me, I just got mine a little bit ago
Sweet
You're not gonna regret it! I love mine and I never thought I'd get into any type of PC gaming but it being a portable handheld pretty much made it perfect for me.
I ordered my steam deck 4 weeks ago - apparently it's gonna take 6 weeks to get here but I'm still really excited to enjoy a bunch of games from my steam library and other PC libraries like epic that I haven't played + I'll easily be able to play some Minecraft modpacks with my partner rather than being stuck on Minecraft bedrock edition 😅
It also sucks the Epic Games Store requires your game to always be online for being on the go.
It does? I didn’t even know this
Not always true, heroic works fine I was playing a bit of guardians of the galaxy on a long drive
PC Gamers have always hated Launchers. Some of the Most Downloaded Game Mods remove or make the Game launch without a Launcher
Yeah, there's no call for banning paying customers for asking legitimate questions about that status of their purchase. That alone is proof enough to me that these people have no business running a company.
I’ve had mine for over a year it’s a love hate relationship! Originally dual booted windows but the is fried so now it’s back stock !
The launcher problem is why I don't like to download games from Ubisoft and EA, unless there are work arounds to bypass them. Screw playing Need for Speed Hot Pursuit Remastered! I'll just play the original with a proper unofficial remaster mod.
And I'm not going to bother with any Trackmania game that goes beyond the Mania Planet entries, either.
Launchers for individual game settings never really bothered me. It’s when the publishers force you to install their stores like uplay, EA play, and rockstar that I really find annoying.
I've had my hd screen for most of a year now and the use case you may have missed is remote play. My deck is great for playing games with lots of dialogue text, remotely playing demanding games that it has no business running, and remote playing my ps5 through chiaki is absolutely worth the effort for me. 😊
Waiting for Elden Ring steam Deck patch that will let me play multiplayer again. Others also have the Inappropriate Activity Message. It is Known
Yea I literally can't play elden ring because "inappropriate activity". I been playing fallout 4 and persona 5 royal in the meantime.
this was fixed for me after a day when the DLC released
This is already fixed. The game runs a little more poorly since the update though.
I saw that this issue was tied to a check for a file that comes with the DLC. EAC throws a fit if you don't have it. Someone stated you can just make the file and place it in your game folder. Saw it in a thread on discussion boards.
But I have no idea if that will cause any other side-effects. I just purchased the DLC. Lost some money for the steam summer sale but I'll live... Lol
Already fixed? I tried playing yesterday and it was still broken. Unless it was just fixed today.
EA app is the worst, everytime I install it with Nonsteamlauncher it never works and says the Launcher needs to Restart.
also i would love to see Sim card slot on handheld
I’d love to play black ops 2 zombies in a hotel that has crap WiFi, because I did that last week and it constantly booted me out even just trying to play solo
dont even waste your time playing online at hotels, libraries are your best bet but first you need to get the usb c ethernet adapter for stronger internet connection to reduce lag
Hope you enjoyed that maroon 5 concert
I just refund games with launchers, or always online garbage if they're not mp only. Already have enough annoying games with garbage launchers and don't need more. Then again I've been avoiding modern AAA and haven't run into most of these issues very often
Do you think we're going to see a sale soon with the OLED decks since the summer sale is a few days away?
I was hoping too as well, the OLED sale would likely be at least a year after it came out (so November) but I couldn’t wait and ordered my OLED yesterday
my touchscreen is always super accurate idk why people say its inaccurate
fun part is i know of 2 NFS Hot Pursuit games.. nfs 3, back in the mid~late 90s and the newer around 2010 or so one, nfs 3 had no launcher, the game just loads up and runs, no chain-loading off a launcher.. so referencing hotpursuit and a launcher actually confused me a bit, as i default to the older nfs 3 hotpursuit
Any tips for getting XDefiant to run? I think it’s the anti cheat that isn’t booting properly
Need for speed EA/ and mass effect launcher is really bad and lagging .....I agree to fix this would be great
They should really fix the internal FSR, doesn't work with fullscreen nor windowed, it locks the fps to 20..
You deserve more views bro.
Launchers are a relic of the past
Steam is also a launcher. 🥶
@@ryuno2097 steam isn't proprietary though
@joogled1839 "Steam isn't proprietary though" either you're terribly misinformed or you don't really know what that word means.
@@majorgnu you cant launch non-launcher games from other launchers. (eg ea launcher for ea owned games) steam lets you add non-steam games. closed launchers are proprietary, meaning they only allow games you own on their platform to be played through it. hence, proprietary. there isn't really another word for that. exclusive doesn't work. un-editable isn't a thing. non-personalized isn't either.
@@majorgnu proprietary also refers to the limits publishers put on their games distribution. you know.. exactly how ea and ubisoft have closed down launchers..
Hey Jimmy are you going to get the Rog Ally x or not interested in the price tag
He shouldn’t. ASUS is a trash company. Look at all the horrible customer service reviews for that device (and any other device they make).
I have a very good gaming PC and could play Elden Ring with Raytracing, but I just played the entirer DLC on the Steam Deck. I had no problems withe die FPS dropps and I had the best time of my life.
Is anybody still having an issue on the steam deck where all Bethesda games including fallout four and Skyrim have no launchers at all and won’t let you use one and so they’re just stuck at whatever settings they were at
Look in your file directory and use the thing that ends with “launcher.exe”
Any idea what's going on with deckcord? It hasn't worked for me for awhile now.
Rebooting works for me. It often gets in a broken state but so far rebooting has worked. I'll name my kid Gaben if valve officially integrates discord into the deck.
The only reason I'm considering buying a steam deck is to be able to use it without internet access when I'm out and about.
Yeah Id love to put all my launchers into one and not needing any others
That's what steam was supposed to be...
@@ferdgerbeler8494 well then where's epic gog Xbox and all the others that's the only reason I don't have one sadly.
anyone noticed deckmtp is broken now? any alternatives? only thing i hate about the steamdeck. no usb transfer.. pretty much every handheld should have usb transfer.
I heard a rumor that someone was working to get the OLED screen from the deck working on the LCD... they were making a small control board, have you heard this??
I heard this rumor too but I expect it to be expensive if it happens
@@fantom0369 The display itself is on ifixit, it's like $100.... So if a controller is like $50, I would do it.... Would love to hear or see more info on this.
I want to know why some games you can't map some buttons, like the ones on the back of the steam deck
Sometimes you have to use KBM input and then map those buttons to keybindings. What I do is download one of the community configurations and then modify the controls that way. However I could be completely unhelpful to you in your situation. But I hope maybe it was helpful? 🤞
I would love to buy the Deck HD screen but too worried about breaking my deck. Since I have PWM sensitivity that leads to migraines this is the only way I'll ever get a better screen. I bet steam deck 2 will oled and no lcd, but if valve is a better company than sony, samsung or google then they will have either option
im so old that Jimmy's mom fav band is maroon 5...lol
Oh gawd. Please no. The truth. THE TRUTH. I can't come to terms with it... Am I... Am I.... Old? 😭
Well... At least *my* mom's favorite band is guns and roses
@@Jaguar21010 thats my dad favorite band LOL
I don’t understand having anti cheat on sports games with offline modes. EA needs to fix this. No reason why I shouldn’t be able to play the new fifa or madden on my steam deck offline
Grid doesn't work goes back to start
it's still gtx660ti level, so what improvements are you looking for?
always room to improve when it comes to software
Eh Im happy with my LCD Deck no need for a 1200p upgrade or an OLED deck either if i want rich colors ill just dock my deck and enjoy on the road im just busy enjoying my break times and lunch playing away to worry about color reproduction and blackest blacks not saying its not nice but wholly unnecessary for me. (I have to tell my self this to stop the itch to get a OLED Deck Im trying to wait it out till the next iteration humor me!)
I know that you mean. I've got an older LCD model and as nice as the oled would be it's not a big enough upgrade to be worth paying for (to me at least). If I was buying one now I'd certainly pay the extra though (I'm also making myself feel better)
Steam deck are on sale right now. Only the 64 and 512 lcd are %15 off, for someone who doesn't have a deck would u guys recommend getting an lcd deck still?
They're already sold out 😅
I'd recommend just getting the OLED anyway.
@theLonelyLemnn no wayyyy they sold out, I was just looking at the screen hahahahahaha that's hilarious
Yea bro I'm on the site right now 64 gb Brand new and 512 brand new are %15 off and I can still buy one doesn't say sold out yet lol. I was like hell nahhhh lol
@@Celsun667 Ohhh, in the UK they're sold out. As I've got the OLED I'd say get that one as the benefite are worth the price bump, but if you wanna get the LCD for cheap it's still a great Deal.
absolutely!
The og steamdeck can gain a lot from a good overclock. It beats the crap out of my roommates oled model. My cpu, GPU and ram is over clocked. Runs well, no issues
...?
they're running the same chipset.. of course the same chip overclocked will do better than one that isn't.
Maybe he also won silicon lottery @@joogled1839
But wouldn't they be equal if they both had an overclock?
@@joogled1839 I think the ram is clocked higher on the OLED model and a couple of improvements. That's why he said his fps was a lil higher. I'm just stating you can go beyond that with the original steamdeck if that's a selling point.
I 100% recommend overclocking. Games that run at 45-50fps will run at a solid 60 usually but you'll lose so much battery life that it's really not as portable. Also I've repasted mine and bought a better back plate. Repaste it at least before you oc or it will overheat
The launcher problem is why even though I'm a new steam deck owner and love it, the deck will never replace my Nintendo Switch. The Switch just works when you want it.
I have zero issues emulating games I own physical copies of
I simply don’t play games that require launchers or has an always online requirement. Hard Pass. DeckHD? Vapor ware. Banned on Discord? File a chargeback on your credit card.
Touch wood, no issues what so ever with my SD Oled and I've had it almost 7 months now
Damn sold my oled 3 weeks ago to get the new rog ally
Gambler eh? Hope the bet pays off and you never need service from asus..
epic fail dude.. asus has been horrible recently.
@@joogled1839 the steam deck is a bit underpowered for me taste compared to the competition.
Won’t have that problem if you buy from Best Buy with warranty. Then you don’t have to deal with asus. I might pick up the rog ally x and sell the deck Oled. I’d love to have access to my gog and epic games and gamepass natively without trying to do a bunch of work around. Plus it’s still a win for steam because I buy majority of games through steam but epic gives a lot of good free games that I don’t want to re purchase on on steam and gamepass day one release is dope. Love my steam deck but I think the ally x is worth the premium. Plus the 16:10 is annoying. Most games don’t utilize in my use case. Still a great device.
@@kaiichinose9590 if the 16:10 is annoying, play 16:9. the screen is only 800p, which is perfect for that screen size. i do agree tohugh, gamepass is missing from the steam deck. that's the ONLY thing that i want added software-wise at this point. not everyone has bestbuy though. i don't have bestbuy here or really anyone that wants to sell these high class handhelds. the ally x has been met with mixed reception by channels like rgc though, so i wouldn't buy..
okay but how was the maroon 5 show
It was great. You should've been there. 😊
Bruh, you and your mom enjoy your time with Maroon 5.
looks like the DeckHD is just another rug pull
DeckHD, hahaaah!!!
I always thought it was a scam.
Why do you have to hold the steam button to use your track pad? My track pad just works as a mouse by default in launchers and then switches to whatever i have set for the game itself when the game launches. Try setting up your track pad to work as a mouse in desktop mode, and i believe that makes it work automatically as a mouse in launchers. Idk, i kinda prefer the launcher and mouse interaction
Because some of us have it for the number line or other hot keys
I dont get it having to go online just to play an offline singleplayer game it doesnt make sense
Launchers are so annoying, especially Rockstar Games Launcher. Downloaded a quack exe for my Steam version of GTA IV just so I can skip it, having to login and get confirmation email just for a singleplayer game is pointless.
Ubisoft Connect is terrible. Being required to put in a username and password every time I want to play splinter cell blacklist has instinctually made me start researching how to pirate ubisoft games. Ubisoft sucks but I still want to play their older games back when they made decent games but that experience sucks right now. Love it when Ubisoft Connect crashes and forces my game to close. Then I have to do the whole process over again. Uuuuuuuuuuugghhh
Launchers are the reason why I didn't buy a steam deck
VALVE, as a joke, should release Half Life 3... with a crappy settings launcher. Heh. I amuse myself.
maroon 5 is amazing honestly
If only the nfs games didn’t require drm
There is a big difference between people being “just fine” with how a game runs on the deck and people just making do with how it runs on deck lol
If a game runs poor on deck but is still popular that does not mean all those people are happy with the performance, they would all take more if they could get it.
Can confirm, if game from EA I go to get game from Johncena
Moved warehouse my arse…
Hate launchers. It's always been this way. No-cd cracks back then, now repacks; you're always a "potential pirate" to these corpos. I pay for it, buy the best version, and wait for pirates. Sucks to wait, but it's worth it for me since I only care about single player games.
Mass effect legendary edition....
uplay is why I don't buy ubisoft anymore. All my ubisolf old purchases freeze my deck or dont even work. F--- ubisoft!
Launchers and always online is 100% on the devs not Valve and having some requirement for all this extra things you ask for just to be able to sell on the stream deck will just mean devs will put less effort into things for steam deck not more, Honestly as it is Valve is doing the best they can, and it will be less friction if mechanics for the deck was put in place to make launchers easier than trying to get devs to update games from sometimes 10 years ago when they may not be making much if anything off those games any more.
Lets see what nintendo is going to do
RedLauncher aka The Witcher 3 is also Garbage… you cant login via Launcher on Steamdeck cause the Login is via Browser which doesn’t start in Game-Mode…. I just want to sync my Savegame between PC and Deck…. 😢
Doesn't steam cloud save work without launcher?
GOG Edition, sadly Steam don’t sell it at the Store.
If they were moving their warehouse which will cause delays. Why would they need to ban people for asking? Clearly they scammed people and ran away with the money.
Ea and rockstar are have the shit launchers that make my almost want to never mess with them again.
Hope they get rid of crap like the EA and Rockstar overlay, they're so freaking annoying.
Valve: Hey can you guys like please not use these third party launchers
Consumers: Yeah we wont stand for this
Rockstar: GTA 6 releases next year with our launcher
Consumers: --Download--
100% that is fishy. If you take my money you better ship the product. That’s why I don’t like LRG
If I complain about the ScreenHD and get banned from a discord server I will risk my account and break discords community guidelines and get my entire account banned. My voice must be heard. Yes a account ban over a screen. Worth the risk. Luckily I'm not one of the ScreenHD owners.
thats.. not how discord works. you can't have your account banned because you were banned from a server, and complaining about a screen isn't against community guidelines. idk maybe i'm misunderstanding what you're saying but i'm 99% sure you can't get your account banned like that
they said that they will in the future break the discord official rules, not the servers rules@@RobinYH
valve should absolutely stop accepting games that use launchers on to steam I'm so fucking sick of them.
I don’t see the point of the HD screen
I don’t want a high resolution screen regardless
I want a device with long battery life and regardless a lower resolution will increase the life
1280x800 has been great imo
Docked I run at 900p usually if I can
Yeah I have a GPD Win Mini (Ryzen 6840U) and its display is a 1080p panel that runs at 120Hz; Even at 30 watts it struggles to run anything at full res higher than 60fps. I run the panel at 60hz anyway as a result.
@@gunstorm05 i also find that at the size of the steamdeck and switch screen, 1080p isnt so different from 720p at forearm length
This is exactly what is wrong with all the steam deck competitors , 4k 244Hz on a handheld is a waste of money and you will never be able to use it for anything but NES emulation.
Oled screens are a fantastic choice for a handheld, going for a better looking screen instead of a higher resolution that you can't see or even run was a great choice by valve
Never buy anything ea or Ubisoft because the launcher crap.
Plottiwst. You don't own any of the games you buy Digital
You dont own phsysical disks too. Its a myth.
Yeah. If you can't hold it you don't have it.
Launchers are the worst, any console game has the support to not need it but that seems to have not come over to PC. It’s the worst thing as an ex-console kid. Steam is the only exception-but isn’t like the equivalent of PSHome/XboxOS?
I’ll just get ROG Ally X when it comes out.
Have fun!
ew
i hope the battery is actually usable. an hour on average is pretty bad. and i hope asus fixes their warranty service.
Before you purchase, you should look at their customer service and the horrific stuff they just done to void your warranty.
All I can say is that there are a bunch of games I refuse to buy because of stupid game launchers. There's a lot of games hassle free, for me to be bothered buy this companies bs
The launchers I've come across? They're literally a NON issue for me. A few seconds of annoyance to play my game. Woo. Touch the display to hit OK.
Online REQUIREMENTS? They've ALWAYS been irritating whether it be for people on a trip of some sort with a laptop or for people with a shite internet connection... OR companies who INSIST their game CAN'T be played offline and their servers take a shit and nobody can play.
Or companies who insist their game can't be played offline... but people who pirated the game are doing just fine.
ubisoft requires you to type in a password EVERY TIME you launch a game.
They won’t fix Elden ring post release.
They still haven’t fixed the micro stutter on the pc port, nor 60+ fps.. nor ultra wide. From Soft is a bad Pc game company. They make good games, very bad ports
you seem to have the wrong idea when you buy ubisoft games you down own them ubisoft does they are just lending to you their services wich they can delete the game out of your library at any time they feel like it
First
valve could be the leader in pc handheld industry if they could just go all out guns blazing making the steam deck lot more powerful, bigger screen, more hz preferably 144hz with vrr, bigger battery life and a portable gpu but instead they're like nintendo just making mediocre pc handheld systems. they already got the best os out them all but fall short in the hardware department
Bad take. Valve is already the leader in the handheld industry. Every x86 handheld is playing games from Steam. Valve is smart not to iterate on hardware until they're ready.
144hz with vrr sounds awful, the battery will take a straight nosedive into 1hr play times at that point... Also, drains more power to have a screen that can do that. Bigger screen? Disagree. The Steamdeck is already the largest real handheld, increasing the size would reduce the amount of "Handheld" owners. The only thing that should really be focused on, is 1. more power, 2. better battery life, 3. better temps.
That should be the only priority, and that comes before everything else.
@@fw.sacsha8235he is smoking very hard things BC that shit is gonna feel like 150° C and Last for around 20 minutes.
Or You can take 2 Cars battery and be able to play 3 hours.
Downsides?
At this moment, better buy a PC gamer, and stream the Game.
@fw.sacsha8235 legion go seems to be doing just fine
you are asking for laptop, limitation are good thing for better optimised games
Battlefield 5 doesn’t work on my steam deck? Whyyyyyy there are no videos about that
There are. I think it happened within the last month. Sucks I know! It didn't run well before that anyway though. I had owned it prior to the news, and ya I believe it would have taken some serious tweaking (says proton db). If my memory serves me right here.
Can I add you on vamp surv
