While also not much more expensive, since it phased out the previous models 64gb and 512gb variants, making 256gb the default and having 512gb and 1tb take the place with OLED (at the same price point as the previous models). Also HDR!
@@phoenixdown1947A lot of the games don't have native controller support. Legit spent 30 minutes each on 3 separate games mapping controls already. Also a lot of the games don't support EAC for linux which steamos uses.
But it's also to worth to note that the LCD version is worth it even if if the OLED version is also worth the price difference. Unless you are constantly on airplanes, the battery life difference between OLED and LCD steam decks won't matter too much.
I promise you the oled model is totally worth the extra $100. The battery life and thermal performance are also significantly improved with 6nm. The faster ram makes framerates more stable across the board. Also, the 90 hz refresh rate combined with 1000 nit peak brightness hdr make the gaming experience just sooo much more impressive visually and the controls are much more responsive. As someone who owned the lcd deck before upgrading to the oled, I can tell you all these different things add up and the result is top notch.
this videos is a great example to remind you kids: just because its on youtube, it does not mean its true. Just because most of it is true, it does not mean everything is true. Get the OLED
@@firstblessings8777 is fine that you got the LCD no one is judging that tbh, but is irrefutably true that saying the OLED does not offer anything besides the screen and some other perks is well... a lie and saying the switch upgrade from LCD to OLED was a bigger upgrade than the Steam Deck one (because it was only $50 difference) is also a bigger lie. This all combined screams for a second video: "I Was Wrong About the Steam Deck...OLED", how can a person be wrong two times.
@@Siul_987yeah. I’m pretty sure the steam deck oled had a few more tweaks and improvements from the lcd. It can download faster, better battery life, screen bezel is shrunken down a bit too.
Battery life on the LCD makes it kinda useless unless your up to spending more on battery packs and or play for less time on the go. returned my LCD and ordered a OLED
For me it's steam input. It's so nice having access to two trackpads for hotkey and macro menus, plus sensors on the thumbsticks to activate gyro aiming. You can do layouts for normal controllers, but Deck just has infinitely more options.
My lcd still got at least 90 minutes, and more like 3 if running light games before upgrading. Either way was longer than I ever really went without an outlet so I can't say it really matters. My only complaint neither fit in my pocket.
@@o0junglist0o93Still blows any other x86_64 handheld (besides the OLED) out of the water. While I agree the LCD Steam Deck battery isn't great, it's plenty for portable gaming. I have the LCD, and I can play Minecraft for a good 4-5 hours, 2D games for 6 on a single charge and games like Skyrim for 3-4. Sure, everyone likes longer life, but for adults who tend to lack in free time anyway, it's completely practical.
My dude, you were wrong about the steam deck and now you are wrong about the steam deck oled. pls get one second hand or something and let us know what you think.
@@mjshinyhunterppl are being a bit harsh to you over it but I do think it’s a much higher quality product than the base version, the battery is significantly better not just cuz of capacity but all the chips on it are more efficient plus the OLED it gets like 50% more battery life on top of the screen and the improved buttons, even the sound was improved on it supposedly.
Compared to the Switch OLED, the Steam Deck offers significantly more upgrades. It features a larger battery, smaller bezels, a better cooling system, higher frame rates, and of course, the OLED screen. With the Switch OLED, the main change was just a bigger kickstand.
I have both the Ally and The Deck. When I got the Ally I gave my deck to my son, the UI was good for him. I recently switched to Bazzite OS which is a steamOS varient. I am so pleased with it as Linux w/ proton is the secret sauce. The Steam deck native Steam OS is a fantastic linix distro imo and I think thr loss of certain multiplayer games is well worth the much better stability with other games and no windows bloatware.
Great Video! I also own an LCD Deck. But honestly, if I'd buy a Steam Deck now, I'd go for the OLED one. The LCD Fan can be a bit loud sometimes, + the black bars on the OLED are smaller, it has a bit better battery and also 90hz instead of 60. a refurbished 64GB for 280-300 bucks from valve with warranty is a crazy good deal. Just get an extra SD Card and you are ready to go. And if you are brave enough, you can even buy a 1TB SSD for 50-100 bucks.
I just bought LCD in sale for 350€, instead of OLED for 569€ . I think the price difference is huge for a casual gamer playing almost always at home only , for 1-2 hours.
Also, the OLED version rarely if ever goes on a proper sale. I saw the Rog Ally for 500$ multiple times already, that's cheaper than the OLED version for a much more performand handheld, with arguably better screen (higher refresh rate+vrr). Add the difference of 70$ towards a small 65w powerbank and eventually a case like modcase that you can strap the powerbank on the back of the handheld, and you have a more performant steamdeck, with better battery, more refresh rate, more games, and VRR. And you don't like windows? Just get Bazzite and basically have steamos. If the oled version went on a proper sale, then I might've considered it. But i'm just gonna wait for the Rog Ally X to go on sale towards christmas, and if it's not at most 650$ or so, then im just gonna get a 450-500$ rog ally and a power bank. The LCD version for 350$ is a great deal, but I enjoy xbox game pass too much, and would like to play newer games at 30+fps (like black myth wukong)
I love my Steam Deck and although I picked up an LCD at the first year anniversary sale and just prior to the OLED, I have no regrets. But for those just looking at one, totally get the OLED model. I’m just gonna wait til a Steam Deck 2 before I replace it since it’s too soon to upgrade to the OLED.
Idk if you’ve heard about it yet but you can now add windows to steam decks, which means you can also run game pass natively. The steam deck is an amazing machine!
For clarity. You don’t need to use a specific dock. Any usb-c whatever dongle with an HDMI, power in and whatever else your use case needs will work. I just grabbed the one I used for my laptop like 6 years ago and it works perfectly. Also I recommend strongly against emudeck. It breaks severely over time and often is more difficult to fix than the stand alone options.
The thing that makes the OLED deck lasts beyond its hardware is the capability to stream HDR on the OLED from other devices (PC, PS5 and potentially more in the future). When the hardware is no longer capable to drive the games, the ability to stream HDR to the deck at 1000nits extends the longevity of the deck greater than the LCD
I had the LCD model, then upgraded to the OLED. To anyone reading, don't listen to him. Get the OLED. The screen is beautiful with the HDR, and the battery life is noticeably longer too
Some other nice things about the OLED that I haven't seen anyone mention is the actual screen size. It's a little bit bigger than the LCD but it feels like a massive difference because the actual size of the Deck remains the same but the bezels get MUCH smaller. Another benefit is the pure blacks from the OLED make games that don't support 16:10 aspect ratio of the deck more immersive. The grey borders from the LCD can be distracting and the OLED fixes that.
I've been using the steam deck since almost ago and I could've been happier that I got one myself just to play games wherever I go. It's a great experience for me. I mean there are some drawbacks with the deck itself, but at least it's worth the cause.
Weird way to look at the price difference. The 512GB LCD model saw a price drop of $200 from $649 USD to $449. You're jumping in on a product that anyone else who bought it before you paid $200 more than you did, so saying that an extra $100 isn't worth it for a better screen, higher refresh rate, massively increased battery life, etc., when others paid $200 more for what you got just feels odd.
I haven’t seen anyone comment about it on here and I didn’t know it either when I first got mine but don’t use the left pad to scroll up and down like that. Rotate it in a circle clockwise or counter clockwise around it. That’s actually how it’s supposed to be used. TRUST me it works way easier.
was thinking of getting one for an absolute age , finally bit the bullet , and got one from ebay , wow really wish i got one earlier, its so versatile, also like almost every body i have a massive back log on steam, many i find are a perfect fit for this , so laying on the sofa or in bed playing them is great.
I have the steam deck dock. I do not recommend getting one until valve fixes the issues on the dock or recalls it entirely. For whatever reason the dock falls back to USB 2.0 speeds instead of leaving them at 3.0. With Mike experience it’s been a 50-50 if USB 3.0 functions. I have tested this with my dock and a friend dock. Unless we just got incredibly unlucky, and they both came from the same batch steam support refused to acknowledge the problem because I am supposedly not using the dock the way it’s supposed to be used oddly enough HDMI and display port seems unaffected.
I find it so funny that the steam deck which is basically an Arch Linux distro, is the thing that doesn't need any configuration and just works out of the box, whereas the windows 11 competitors are the ones that don't work out of the box and need more configuration lmao I also hear the windows ones use up more battery which those models compensate for by having a bigger battery, but then idk sounds like that might mean longer charge times.
That's part of it, but it's also the steamdeck being less performant (running at 1280*800p, while the others run at 1080p or more for the lenovo legion go) and being able to use 7w tdp. To be fair, I'd always rather have to configure my device a bit but have a way better device, than just get something that works right out the box. I have no problem spending a few hours to configure it, install all the drivers, maybe even get Bazzite on a rog ally x, and at the end of the day get WAY better performance, better refresh rate, VRR, double the battery of a steamdeck, alongside the pros (albeit few) of having windows: xbox game pass, alongside other games that dont work on the steamdeck.
You're brushing off the oled upgrade way too much. Especially for someone who hasnt gotten a steam deck before. Like the best advice is either get 64gb lcd and upgrade by changing the ssd or 512gb oled as entry point $100 for oled, better battery, more refined control seems fair. But anyway good video and exactly why people love the steam deck.
yeah i’ve been seeing a lot of comments talking about this. i may decide to get one but it was more that the price gap was too high when i just wanted a good entry point into the world of handheld PCs.
Valve's dock isn't that expensive when you realize it comes with another charger so you don't have to crawl under your desk when you take your Deck with you travelling or whatever. You can leave the charger connected to the dock all the time.
The OLED version is very much worth the money. Speaking as someone who owned both and used both for hundreds of hours, the extra battery life is huge and the refresh rate makes things look so much smoother. If you exclusively play low power games and can get 5 hours from your LCD deck then okay, but I saw regular games that could drain my LCD deck in 80 minutes.
For those that don't know the 3DS can play N64 games You just can't specifically emulate them. How do you think Star Fox and Zelda Majora's mask are on there?
I highly recommend setting up the Steam API inputs to configure things like auto-run, so you can play without keeping both hands on the controller all the time and always stop making progress
Crazy to hear someone say $100 is a lot of money for all the upgrades the OLED gives, yet spends ridiculous amount of money on the expensive first party Nintendo games. I own both versions and the OLED is the way to go.
this video is spot on the gaming world is changing right now. and it all started with the gameboy its been a long process but we finally came at a break through with the switch and the succes of the switch made developers open their eyes to the market and made them push forwards for us to have devices like the steamdeck and rog ally etc. my guess the new switch will be leagues above the old one and having features like dlss and g sync etc maybe even rtx remix for old games. would givve nintendo's catalog the boost it needs to give a experience that compares with steam, xbox and playstation. not true quantity but through quality. ive been waiting for metroid prime 4 for a while i think that game is really gonna help the new system get to heights and start a new era for nintendo
From someone who has used both, The OLED model (along with all it's other unsung improvements) is 100% worth the extra $100. If you can afford either or, get the OLED.
On April I upgraded my LCD steam deck to a OLED steam deck, great upgrade! Also, I bought a 2TB SSD on Aliexpress; so now I have the steam deck OLED with 2TB, and the LCD model with 1TB (upgraded from 64gb) -but I'm planning to sell the LCD to a friend-
Congrats on your buy! The Steam Deck is an awesome device, but have so many "hidden features", I can tell you at least 2 you didn't mention: 1. If you like physical collections, you can hotswap microSDs full of games as cartridges (and then organize your games that way to have complete collections: For example, the complete Witcher trilogy can be installed in a single 128GB microSD). 2. When docked (or anywhere really), you can sync any Bluetooth controller to work as input for any game, will all inputs including touchpads, gyro and grips if available, and yes, this include both your joycons as a single controller with additional side buttons (the mini shoulders act as L4 to R5).
I wouldn’t necessarily agree with trying to use microSDs as game storage even though that sounds pretty neat. Load times will likely suffer. Not by much. But any game that relies on a lot streaming data as you move like ratchet & clank, Spider-Man or Minecraft(probably) will experience slowdowns. I see it being a better options on older games that came out during the hdd or early sata ssd days where load times on many games loads quickly even on hdds. 100mb/s speeds is the max microsds can go. At least with current prices. It’s cheaper to get a 2tb 2230 nvme and pop it in the deck than a 1.5tb sd card. I see using the sd card as backup when you exhausted your 2tbs and need more storage
@@suiton20 while there is a performance degradation (mostly on writes, that affects mostly updates and installs) if you get A2 microSDs, in-game performance drop is negligible, even in newer games. I have my whole Sony collection in a single 1tb card (including Spiderman, Uncharted, HorizonZD and GoW, and all of them work great). And also I can certify even games as newer as MK1 or Suicide Squad run just fine under the same conditions. To be technical, it is because: 1. SteamOS handle installation directories and shader caches in internal memory always and 2. It uses a far more robust FS that NTFS (that is way too index intensive for it's own good): ext4. So seriously, don't assume it is the same as using a microSD under Windows, because it's more akin to memory management on the PS or the Switch (but better because, again, you can hotswap them).
What nonsense many people write here. I have the LCD and OLED variants here. Sure, the display is better, but you only notice it in a direct comparison. Not after 1 minute of play anyway. And the claim that games would run more stable thanks to better RAM is complete nonsense. None of you will notice this difference. I'm not saying that the OLED model isn't worth it, but to claim that there is a huge difference between the two variants is simply wrong. Both are simply great
My Deck fried after 1 year of use. I absolutely loved it. When I took to get fixed they said it was water damage. Must have been that ghost water that doesn't exist. (I am 100% certain that it could not have possibly been water damage.) It still works as a web browser. I absolutely loved it but it is VERY FRAGILE. Beware!!!
I've had my steam deck for a few months and out of any trackpad I have ever used, Valve nailed it. I absolutely HATE trackpads with a burning passion, yet the one on my deck is palpable, making it the best trackpad I've ever used. Plus, I really like how I was able to get a discount by buying a refurbished deck from them. Absolutely love how when they have enough refurbished ones they resell them for a lower price. Potential cosmetic damage was not gonna stop me from enjoying the purchase. And yes, while the OLED version is a much more improved version of the handheld, I wasn't gonna be able to justify that over a cheaper refurbished system. So far the only problems I've had are one game I have (Isles of Sea and Sky) will throw an error once in a blue moon, causing me to have to force close the game, having to do some IT magic to reset the root password for desktop mode because I forgot it, and a single plug-in managing to cripple my ability to access desktop mode.
I ordered an oled yesterday!! Really excited to replace gaming on my old laptop with it. At first i was worried about "what if they announce a steam deck 2?" And realise they wont be around until 2025-2026(When they become readily available) and maybe 2027-2028 when they get a revised model like the current Oled. So i think staying with my upcoming one for 4-5 years until a much more upgraded model like the current oled is to the first steamdeck is perfect with me
Not worth it if ur an “at home” gamer? Brother, I have 1 feature that will prove this wrong. It’s the “pick up, play for a lil, put it down, come back, move to the kitchen, play during zoom call, play casual point and click game with the touch screen while eating, bring it to bed, then connect to dock, stream to my AR glasses, AirPods, and my DualShock so that I can play the games lying down staring at the ceiling with a lightweight controller I’m holding comfortably over my belly” feature! It’s my favorite!
One of my favorite features is that I can remote play on my PlayStation with the Deck. I've got my PlayStation and Xbox on the living room TV so it is convenient when I want to play Fortnite with my three sons; one on the Switch, one on the XBox and TV, one remote playing the PS on the Deck, and me on my PC.
A 1.62 kg handheld sized as a 75% keyboard running games on small screen. I was excited about it, but after I tested it, I changed my mind windows games are bad on small screen
I think I'm the reverse here, that started playing my 3DS XL again and use the SteamDeck and switch mostly docked the past month. For battery management I would suggest get an external battery if you go out a lot. It helped me on a lot when I didn't want to plug in on the couch but just plug somewhere far away.
You've definitely got to give the gyro another chance. I would unironically say that the gyro is the closest you can get to a mouse on controller instead of the trackpads.
I'm on the ball about getting this as some people say if im not really into pc gaming the steamdeck might be better for me since their os is easy to use and games are also easier to tinker with than regular pc.
I’m not at all a PC Gamer but the Steam Deck is well worth it. Especially right now the basic Steam Deck is on sale for around $290, that’s actually cheaper than the basic model Switch. Great deal!
2:36 "New Steamdeck OLED vs old LCD" Steamdeck OLED gets 50% better battery life, 10% better GPU performance due to the upgraded RAM bandwidth, 90hz refresh rate (also enabling lower input lag at 45fps) and it's the first HDR handheld gaming device ever made. For an extra $100 there is no question the Steamdeck OLED is worth the upgrade.
I jumped on the steam deck as soon as it released because I was already thinking of getting the GPD Win, then new handhelds started releasing every six months. If you're jumping in now, I'd get the OLED straight up, you're getting more than just a new screen, the motherboard is different and battery is better, unless you want windows then get the legion Go, windows sucks on the deck because the controller needs setting up as well and the frame rate isn't great when I use it.
If you want to buy a new deck, buy the OLED. It's not that much more expensive and offers more for the money. The longer battery life and the quieter fans are a blessing. It's a different story if you want to buy used. Then the LCD is a good deal because you can get it very cheaply. I would just consider how you feel financially. You'll have fun either way.
Bro has never seen a screen running more than 60Hz to call it "random specs". You have an interesting perspective on handheld gaming. Good video. Not just knocking you, but everyone who does this. Why would you play AAA titles handheld on 30-ish FPS. It is a horrible experience. Purposely locking your frame to 30 while it can perform higher isn't so bad, but if your system can only produce 30 fps it feels so. much. laggier. Especially something like Elden Ring in which timing matters a lot.
I love my deck. I am in a position though where I can play it at work plugged in. Like you, never had much issue battery wise since I also don't play much modern game wise. My stepdad uses a steamdeck since he doesn't have room for a desktop
Does the steamdeck actually beat every other console? no... it does not, not by a long shot if you are strictly talking about performance/overall graphics power. What it does do is make the absolute best portable gaming experience for games that you'd never think would ever be portable. It also gives tech loving gamers a fully open system to tinker with if they so choose, which you can't exactly do with any other console. Oh, and if you're in a pinch and need a desktop system while you're miles away from home and all you have is a deck... yup, you're covered... No other console gives the user as much freedom to experiment and customize their system. This level of customization and compatibility from the deck is why it is my favorite gaming device, even whipping my Switch out of it's top spot.
I never had the Steam Deck LCD but I do own the Deck OLED, ROG Ally and Legion Go. All three of them are great and my Ally and Deck get the most attention. The fact that the Ally is the most comfortable in my hands is one of the reasons why I go after it the most but it's battery life isn't great and gets similar runtimes to the LCD Deck when TDP is identical. Deck OLED gets really nice battery life especially with some light tweaking like TDP limits or frame rate caps. You'd be surprised how much longer the Deck OLED gets in battery life over the Ally. It lasts longer for two main reasons. For one the battery is 25% larger than both the LCD Deck and Ally and the other reason is because valve actually shrunk the die. This means the APU is actually more efficient than the LCD Deck. This means even better than 25% gains in battery life with the same settings. Much like with the Mariko Switch vs the OG Switch, battery life is 50% to up to double the run time of the original LCD Deck. Plus it has faster RAM meaning that game performance can be up to 10% better. Not trashing on the LCD deck though as it's great. I think it's perfect for those who are unsure about the deck and don't want to invest a ton Also going to have to disagree about PC gaming. PC gaming isn't all too expensive and a good mid range PC can be easily gotten for under $1000. No need to spend thousands when most don't. Most common builds are of mid range PCs, just like the consoles.
You forgot to mention about other launchers such as Rockstar, GOG, Epic, Ubisoft, you can get them all running on the deck. Same for other windows programs, you can get so much running on the deck with just a little digging.
The OLED version is worth more than a hundred dollars more. Better battery life, cooler running, 90 Hz, and it's just a better experience overall. Oh, and it also has a wonderful OLED screen. Don't get the LCD. It's false savings.
Now if only it was available everywhere! But no it's only available in The United States, Europe, the UK and Asia. Everywhere else in the world good luck even if they're territories of places it's already available in. It's good that competitors have been able to take advantage of this but they usually come with Windows which is not suitable for handheld gaming so we have to install a third-party OS to make it like a Steam Deck. The only recently announced alternative that sounds interesting is the upcoming Orange Pi Neo which will come pre-installed with Manjaro Linux gaming edition instead of Windows 11. Personally I have the Lenovo legion go and just like the ROG Ally it has problems but they've been hard at work to improve them but when you install a secondary OS or replace windows all together which is what I did it becomes a much better alternative than the Steam Deck. The OS I recommend for this is Bazzite OS which is based on Fedora instead of arch. There is also Chimera OS but from what I heard before installing it Bazzite OS is much better on handheld devices and the best handheld devices supported on their website are the steam deck and the Lenovo legion go.
Unpopular Opinion Puffin: Instead of me getting an OLED model, my plan is to get a 64GB LED model and install a 2TB SSD for dual-booting SteamOS and Windows.
Another appeal of the lenovo legion go is that it has usb 4.0 which will allow you to buy a dock to connect GPUs to it externally and make it much more powerful. Its pretty neat, but considering mini PCs which you can get for like half the price have this as well, and comparable/better specs, its.... eh. Got a use case but I'd rather get a mini pc or wait on the next version of the steam deck to come out.
the OLED is 100% worth the difference in price. My brother has the original and I have the OLED .. ..... for example - bigger screen at 7.4 inches, smaller bezels , a far better imo 1000 nits true HDR OLED with a 90 hz refresh rate, improved touchscreen response speed, faster clocked RAM, significantly better battery life not just from a bigger battery but more efficient 6nm die shrank processor with better thermals. Slightly lighter in weight. a slightly larger more efficient fan that runs quieter. improved analogue sticks, improved haptics. faster boot time. there's a lot of big and small improvements that make the price difference a no brainer
Battery is increased 3-8 hr because of the larger battery, better APU efficiency and OLED screen. 60hz to 90hz max is a massive jump and gives you the amazing 45fps locked option at 2hz/fps. This is a range a lot of games fall into on deck (between 30 and 60 fps max/stable). This is a much, much, much better than 40fps(60hz) on the deck OG. Matching fps and hz is huge for smoothness, especially at or under 60hz As far as the actual OLED parts of the OLED- Colors are much better, HDR goes so hard and makes up for the lower resolution, especially at the size/pixel density. The deck OLED actually looks *really good* in the majority of games it runs, especially ones with HDR.
if your thinking about getting a steam deck get the lowest model OLED, not only are you getting a better screen and battery life but you can also get an anti glare screen protector if you happen to be playing outside a lot on amazon, plus there is the ability to upgrade the internal storage to something even larger than the 1tb model, i would only get a LCD if you are really unsure about handhelds and want to test out whether its something for you, the used market for them is really good so if you end up enjoying the LCD you can always sell it and get a OLED model later on
also there are tons of things you can do to maximize your battery life on the steam deck, if you have a good pc you can use that to give you a big boost in battery life with the remote play option
I wouldn't say the Switch created a handheld revolution any more than the Game Boy (and a little more recently, NDS and PSP) did. Switch itself is a customized Nvidia Shield, and before Switch there was a flood of high-spec Android and PC gaming handhelds that were usually poor quality and very expensive. For the the latter, Steam Deck was the revolution, and other companies are now releasing affordable handhelds that can handle more than emulating consoles up to 5th gen
You messed up by not upgrading to the oled model. The improvements were pretty understated when launched and the various upgrades make a world of difference.
You can Install windows on deck and bazzite or garuda on rog ally or Lenovo legion go. So the real compariason is power vs price and trackpad. The steam OS lets you do more things than windows (not the same things), but more of them. So it is both a more console like experience and more versatile. For example old windows games can be ran as a part of the system, integrated with steam big picture where as in windows you can only run them in a XP or older VM.
Steamdecks battery life takes the cake. Most games run fine with 7-10w tdp.. And that gives pretty good batterylife compared to so.ething like ally that runs dry in a hour.
'Just playing Steam games' is a weird negative remark to provide though. Steam has the largest games store out there, on any platform. Also, the OLED model is definitely worth the additional cost. The screen is gorgeous and has fantastic HDR/90hz, but most importantly the battery has double the duration of the LCD and the system is lighter to hold. I've been playing Kingdom Hearts on it today and at 90fps I get over 7 hours in battery, heh. (Not a new game per se, just saying.. the battery issue is solved with the OLED and I no longer have to worry about it.)
Plus you can remote play on your PlayStation via WiFi, can play Game Pass remotely (like Stadia so isn't the greatest experience), and can emulate virtually everything else out there. Also hear that Valve has or is working on getting third party launchers to work properly.
Not getting the OLED model was a big mistake. You spend much of the video complaining about things the OLED model fixes. Definitely worth the 100 dollar price hike.
Get a battery bank if battery life is your biggest issue. A little inconvenient but it'll do. Personally, I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a holiday sale then I'll get the 512GB OLED and a microSD card. I plan to take it with me when I travel.
To somebody like me it's not w big deal to have lcd or oled, I'm not that into gaming where it takes up most of my life so I'm counting pixels and what not. I can't really tell the difference in quality of picture probably because that doesn't matter to me as long as it's not trash I'm good. And battery life is no issue because i have enough powerbanks to keep it going as long as i want. So the lcd model is more than enough for what i need. You guys can't speak for everybody because a lot of us agree with him, oled is not necessary or worth the price.
I like steam deck because now I have a nice console/handheld (besides my overkill pc) thats literally timeless. Ill never have to worry about online servers going down. not until the apocalypse atleast lmao. its always nice to have handhelds like a 2ds xl (i repaired mine recently and never touched it since lol) or ps vitas. but a steam deck will always, always win at the end of the day. the one thing the steam deck could benefit from, is a smaller form factor. if they released a steam deck thats like slightly bigger than a ps vita while also being as lightweight as one, that would be the day steam officially won the handheld market over permanently
I don’t get the comments on this video, I have both an OLED and A LCD, the difference isn’t that great. My wife uses the LCD (512 $380 new from Valve) as it was my gift to her for my birthday. And I use the OLED. The performance difference is not as big as you think running the same games and if you have a good screen it’s not bad either. Just get a Steam Deck it doesn’t matter which one.
I usually get motion sickness from a lot of games (ofcourse the ones I like most XD ) and Steam Deck makes it possible for me to play without getting the motion sickness. Minecraft also works in handheld mode, though the controls are not as pleasant as with a keyboard.
Valve severely under-advertise the OLED Deck. It's a real pet peeve of mine when people make videos like this, claiming to be handheld enthusiasts, but don't their research properly. The OLED Deck should've been called the Deck 2. Significantly higher performance due to far less thermal throttling, that extra 0.4 inches of screen make text a lot more readable, the buttons are better, the trackpads are more than just a gimmick, the rumble is worth a damn, 90hz is fantastic for those low-power indie games (which is what most people use the Deck for), much longer battery life (even longer than Valve officially state), faster charging, and the speakers are almost decent mid-high end portable bluetooth speaker quality. It makes the LCD look like a prototype. I own both and the LCD is now just permanently docked as a sort of media PC / last gen console for my TV, because so many more games I regard as playable on the OLED but not on the LCD when in portable mode.
The new ROG Ally X (don't know if it is new or upcoming, because people are already testing it) is looking pretty good too, and I guess the price should be similar to the regular Ally. The better performance in comparison to the Steam Deck can make a huge difference in your experience, but I want to see how good/bad the pricing is once it gets to my country.
I bought an OG 64gb. The battery was terrible. I just bought the OLED 512 and it is day and night. The battery lasts so much longer. On the 64gb even when I didn't have games on the internal storage it would tell me the storage was full. Definitely get the OLED
2:22 1. Only for games that actually support controllers* 2. Only for games that you wouldn't play with a mouse and keyboard to begin with* 3. Only for non-multiplayer games where typing/communication isn't crucial* (Otherwise, just get a gaming laptop)
What does it offer besides an OLED screen………
Improved performance, battery life, heat distribution, 90hz screen, better storage options
While also not much more expensive, since it phased out the previous models 64gb and 512gb variants, making 256gb the default and having 512gb and 1tb take the place with OLED (at the same price point as the previous models). Also HDR!
uhh game library? steam has the biggest library you can literally play almost all if not all games besides exclusives.
@@phoenixdown1947 re read first comment and rewatch the video. You will understand yor mistake.
and it's lighter, has HDR, 2.5 meter power cord,...
@@phoenixdown1947A lot of the games don't have native controller support. Legit spent 30 minutes each on 3 separate games mapping controls already. Also a lot of the games don't support EAC for linux which steamos uses.
Don't do what this guy did, save the money and get an OLED
Absolutely. The OLED model is stunning.
He is so dumb lol get OLED please
I just unsubscribed just because he said steam deck OLED is not worth it lol
But it's also to worth to note that the LCD version is worth it even if if the OLED version is also worth the price difference. Unless you are constantly on airplanes, the battery life difference between OLED and LCD steam decks won't matter too much.
True 😂
I promise you the oled model is totally worth the extra $100. The battery life and thermal performance are also significantly improved with 6nm. The faster ram makes framerates more stable across the board. Also, the 90 hz refresh rate combined with 1000 nit peak brightness hdr make the gaming experience just sooo much more impressive visually and the controls are much more responsive. As someone who owned the lcd deck before upgrading to the oled, I can tell you all these different things add up and the result is top notch.
Yeah I had the OG 64gb and I just got the 512gb OLED and it's night and day for battery life.
this videos is a great example to remind you kids: just because its on youtube, it does not mean its true. Just because most of it is true, it does not mean everything is true. Get the OLED
Every time I hear someone say they went with the lcd deck over the oled, I pull my hair out. I'm goin bald over here!
Old is more expensive. Are you gonna help foot the bill for me to get the old? No? So keep your opinions to yourself.
Looking forward to "I Was Wrong About The Steam Deck OLED" 😂
The OLED is the only steam deck you should buy. The LCD felt like a prototype, the OLED feels like a final product.
That's a stretch. LCD model has been and still is great.
@@KennyKquackster true but the battery is plain bad on the LCD
My lcd still got at least 90 minutes, and more like 3 if running light games before upgrading. Either way was longer than I ever really went without an outlet so I can't say it really matters. My only complaint neither fit in my pocket.
The OLED is a minor upgrade. It's nice. But the LCD one is still great as it is.
My dude, you were wrong about the steam deck and now you are wrong about the steam deck oled.
pls get one second hand or something and let us know what you think.
i’ve seen a lot of comments talking about this. i’ll definitely consider getting one!
The OLED is a complete game changer as someone who upgraded from the original 256GB. Easily worth it.
Should have got the OLED model. You brushed off the OLED model far too much but up to you, mistake doing that but it is your money.
Based
Great Video!
Bazzite is a buggy mess. The Asus Ally is a QC nightmare with poor support.
Have fun!
What you mean OLED is not worth it? It has better screen, better battery life, better controls, you need to research before giving stupid statements
If it's youre only pc device I guess it's worth paying nearly double but what's the point if you only use it for 2-3 hours at a time
The only real improvement is battery life and screen.
@@SolPolaris It's not "nearly double". And the point is, everything is much better.
@@bravecak3815 And it runs cooler. And the sticks are better. It feels so much better when using it.
Just to add a note. If you change the setting of default resolution to native when you dock it you can get higher resolutions than the deck screen.
The screen is beautiful with the HDR, and the battery life is noticeably longer too
Awesome video! I have a 1TB Steam Deck OLED and I’ve used it nonstop since I got it in February. One of my top handhelds for sure.
What games do you play?
@@nolphkynicolas5591 I play stuff like Chaos;Head Noah, Trails in the Sky FC, and Persona 4 Golden plus some emulation.
A few months later: I was wrong about Steam Deck OLED and here is why you should buy it
I've been using the steam deck since almost ago and I could've been happier that I got one myself just to play games wherever I go.
💯
As a giant monster hunter fan you get a thumbs up just for the music and gameplay XD
The OLED deserves the 100$ addition and even more
FSR 3 boosting steam deck fps is the future
I haven’t seen anyone comment about it on here and I didn’t know it either when I first got mine but don’t use the left pad to scroll up and down like that. Rotate it in a circle clockwise or counter clockwise around it. That’s actually how it’s supposed to be used. TRUST me it works way easier.
i had no idea! it makes so much sense now that i’m thinking about it though. thanks for the tip!
was thinking of getting one for an absolute age , finally bit the bullet , and got one from ebay , wow really wish i got one earlier, its so versatile, also like almost every body i have a massive back log on steam, many i find are a perfect fit for this , so laying on the sofa or in bed playing them is great.
Gog is also a worthwhile game store by the way
I have the steam deck dock. Unless we just got incredibly unlucky, and they both came from the same batch steam support refused to acknowledge the problem because I am supposedly not using the dock the way it’s supposed to be used oddly enough HDMI and display port seems unaffected.
gonna have to strongly disagree.. I bought a cheap 25 dollar dock off amazon and omg its amazing it feels so responsive and I've never had any issues
Have the same issue, works but no gigabit lan for file transfers.
I find it so funny that the steam deck which is basically an Arch Linux distro, is the thing that doesn't need any configuration and just works out of the box, whereas the windows 11 competitors are the ones that don't work out of the box and need more configuration lmao
I also hear the windows ones use up more battery which those models compensate for by having a bigger battery, but then idk sounds like that might mean longer charge times.
Windows uses substantially more resources at idle.
Like the best advice is either get 64gb lcd and upgrade by changing the ssd or 512gb oled as entry point
$100 for oled, better battery, more refined control seems fair. But anyway good video and exactly why people love the steam deck.
yeah i’ve been seeing a lot of comments talking about this. i may decide to get one but it was more that the price gap was too high when i just wanted a good entry point into the world of handheld PCs.
@@mjshinyhunterbuying both to get the oled versus just buying an oled though?
The Steam Deck is an awesome device, but have so many "hidden features", I can tell you at least 2 you didn't mention:
The OLED deck gets around 3 hours on demanding games lile elden ring, the improved battery life finally makes it feel like a proper handheld.
Both are simply great
Sounds like a guy explaining his gf is only ugly in comparison to other girls 😂
My Deck fried after 1 year of use. I absolutely loved it. When I took to get fixed they said it was water damage. Must have been that ghost water that doesn't exist. (I am 100% certain that it could not have possibly been water damage.) It still works as a web browser. I absolutely loved it but it is VERY FRAGILE. Beware!!!
How? Any specific thing you did to cause it?
I was annoyed because they announced the OLED literally a few weeks after I bought my LCD one. But oh well, its still great
Actually the oled upgrade on SD was so more significant than oled switch
I ordered an oled yesterday!! Really excited to replace gaming on my old laptop with it. At first i was worried about "what if they announce a steam deck 2?" And realise they wont be around until 2025-2026(When they become readily available) and maybe 2027-2028 when they get a revised model like the current Oled. So i think staying with my upcoming one for 4-5 years until a much more upgraded model like the current oled is to the first steamdeck is perfect with me
Oled Steam Deck is definitely the best way to play with Steam. The Oled is pretty much an upgrade in every way
Not worth it if ur an “at home” gamer?
Great deal!
Imagine getting a used one. I picked one up for 200$ last year
3:00 you fool!
Using the back buttons for L3 and R3 is the way to go
NEW MJ UPLOAD BABE WAKE UP!!
The lcd model still great
2:36 "New Steamdeck OLED vs old LCD"
Steamdeck OLED gets 50% better battery life, 10% better GPU performance due to the upgraded RAM bandwidth, 90hz refresh rate (also enabling lower input lag at 45fps) and it's the first HDR handheld gaming device ever made.
1:34 FREEDOM UNITE OST LETS GOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I think it's perfect for those who are unsure about the deck and don't want to invest a ton
Also going to have to disagree about PC gaming.
Hes gonna have to make another vid talking about how he messed up with the oled isnt he? 😂😂😂
just bought the 512gb lcd model as it was on sale plan on going through all my jrpgs in my library on it
The OLED version is worth more than a hundred dollars more.
Dude, you totally missed the part that this oled screen does HDR. HDR is so beautiful. The Nintendo switch does not do hdr
you should sell your steam deck and get an oled model and then make a video called “i was wrong about the steam deck oled”
It's called a gimmick.
that 100 bucks is kinda expensive, but it's also 100% worth it if you can afford it.
the OLED is 100% worth the difference in price.
OLED is 1000% worth it unless your eyes are going, you're colorblind, and you keep the device plugged in 24/7
Battery is increased 3-8 hr because of the larger battery, better APU efficiency and OLED screen.
60hz to 90hz max is a massive jump and gives you the amazing 45fps locked option at 2hz/fps. This is a range a lot of games fall into on deck (between 30 and 60 fps max/stable). This is a much, much, much better than 40fps(60hz) on the deck OG. Matching fps and hz is huge for smoothness, especially at or under 60hz
As far as the actual OLED parts of the OLED- Colors are much better, HDR goes so hard and makes up for the lower resolution, especially at the size/pixel density. The deck OLED actually looks *really good* in the majority of games it runs, especially ones with HDR.
and all the triple a companies are coming back to steam anyways so it increases the chance of all those games being played natively on the deck.
if your thinking about getting a steam deck get the lowest model OLED, not only are you getting a better screen and battery life but you can also get an anti glare screen protector if you happen to be playing outside a lot on amazon, plus there is the ability to upgrade the internal storage to something even larger than the 1tb model, i would only get a LCD if you are really unsure about handhelds and want to test out whether its something for you, the used market for them is really good so if you end up enjoying the LCD you can always sell it and get a OLED model later on
also there are tons of things you can do to maximize your battery life on the steam deck, if you have a good pc you can use that to give you a big boost in battery life with the remote play option
The Steam Deck OLED is 1000x better than the original with subtle improvements under the hood.
Cope.
@@JGPanther26 it is though, whether those improvements are worth the price is up to you. I think it’s a bit steep ngl. Definitely pretty good though
Sorry, but sales numbers disagree.

@@hornantuutti5157 Goodpoint, I had forgotten how somehow the deck is more performant at lower tdp
The Legion Go trackpad works just fine, so stop giving unnecessary excuses
Should have gone with oled. But steam deck is great, enjoy!
Also: the ROG Ally is perfectly compatible with Game Pass, so... that can save you a lot of money in the long run.
I bought an OG 64gb. The battery was terrible. I just bought the OLED 512 and it is day and night. The battery lasts so much longer. On the 64gb even when I didn't have games on the internal storage it would tell me the storage was full. Definitely get the OLED

1. Only for games that actually support controllers*
2. Only for games that you wouldn't play with a mouse and keyboard to begin with*
3. Only for non-multiplayer games where typing/communication isn't crucial*
(Otherwise, just get a gaming laptop)
Chiaki4deck for PS5 remote play and GeForce now is where it’s at on the steam deck!
