The Steam Deck is quite possibly one of the best devices to play older games on. Almost every game that was released in 2016 and before will run really well, and with the Deck being a PC, we can play games that even go back to the early 1990s and before, thanks to emulators. While there is no issue with performance for these older titles, it is always nice to see any improvement that could help performance. Yesterday, there was a new change to DXVK, made by Valve's own Joshua Ashton, that will make Direct3D 8/Direct X 8.0 games perform better overall.
Per yesterday's Merge on Github, and reported on Phoronix, The D8VK project has now been merged into DXVK, meaning many Direct3D 8 games, like Grand Theft Auto 3, F.E.A.R., and Max Payne 1 and 2, should have some nice performance boosts. There are also some games that weren't released on Steam that do have PC builds, like Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg, that will also benefit from this!
For some reference, DXVK is an essential part of the Proton compatibility layer that Valve uses to get Windows games to run on the Steam Deck. DXVK specifically is a Vulkan-based translation layer that translates Direct3D 9, 10, and 11 into a Vulkan-readable format, which allows the game to run on Linux. D8VK is essentially the Direct3D 8 version of this kind of layer, and with it being implemented, we should now be able to more easily translate these older games, too.

I love what the steam deck has done with Linux gaming. My desktop has been running Linux for a few years now and gaming is amazing on it.
...and just in time for Windows 10 End-of-Life, next year, too. I converted one laptop to Manjaroo Linux (which is similar to Steam OS desktop) and I'm in the process of converting another laptop. After that, my main PC is next.
I've used win11 for a month now and my youtube history is full on "best gaming linux" searches..
Win11 is terrible but as only linux i have been using is steam os on deck i really have no idea what to instal instead of windows even after searching something else.

We just got the 512 LCD to see how we like it. If we think it's good enough then we will def get one with an OLED screen eventually. I just need to use mine in desktop/external mode mostly

The WD_Black 2TB is even cheaper with $179 now. Wondering if it will drop even more during Prime Day. Have been eyeing that one for so long. It is the fastest 2230 and runs much cooler when compared to the others
2Tb Micro SD card is just a little more. Might be worth it you can't be bothered with the install of the internal SSD.

DXVK isn't game specific, it translates all DirectX 9-11 to Vulkan. Basically any game on PC that isn't using Vulkan or OpenGL is using Direct X

Over the past year and a half, I went crazy on storage for the Steam Deck. I got one of those JSUAX hubs that attach to the JSUAX mod case.
Replaced the SSD with 2TB, the SD slot with a 1.5TB SD (those exist now), two 1.5 TB SDs in USB thumbstick SD readers plugged into the two USBs of the hub, a 1TB SD that goes into the SD slot, and a 1TB SD that goes in a reader card that goes into the bigger slot.
I have oodles of storage with minimal overhead space. I just wouldn't try playing the Steam Deck on battery alone with that hub plugged in.
So for the most part, I usually have my Steam Deck plugged in and it works like a charm. I even have a USB port left on the hub to plug in a keyboard or my Rokkid glasses (with the help of a USBC to HDMI/USB converter plug).

Yeah, when The First Descendant came out I had to delete some games from my SD to make room even though I have a 2tb M.2 and a 1tb sdcard. Funny thing was when I got the SD, the 1st thing I did was swap the 512gb M.2 for the 2tb, when making mention of it online someone had the gall to ask why I needed that much storage. Division 2 (78gb) , Fallout 4 (94gb) , Starfield (128gb), Baldur's Gate 3 (142gb). And this person needs to ask why a large storage capacity is required, yeah I could maybe carry less games since I can't play them all but I'm a chronic game hopper and like to have the variety at hand.

@@ForestSlump Without any tweaking I see anywhere from 32 to 40+ fps depending on the content I'm doing and what's going on in the background. Since I play mainly on my desktop, I have very little hands on time playing on game on the SD. Maybe with some serious playing with the settings I'll be able to get it to at least run at a steady 40 fps.
I run my Steam Library from a 2TB and a 4TB external SSD because I play on several devices like a laptop, a Steam Deck and a number of PCs.

Nice I have 3.5 tb and I still need more but when I'm docked I have 7.5. And I use the magnetic 90 degree connector so I'm not wearing out the usb c the magnetic part just stays in the deck.

The Corsair MP600 Mini SSD is 79 dollars right now at the moment, I write this comment. Now, the WD Black is probably is more durable, but in terms of speed, they are all gonna be similar due to the Steam Deck being a Gen 3 device and all your SSD's are going to clock in at Gen 3 speed which is 3500 mb/s.

Weird, I’ve had zero issues with my official Valve Steam Deck Dock, everything works great for me, VRR & all.
I've had no issue with the official dock when i bought it in May this year. Maybe your official dock got bugged during an update and that's why you have issues with it.

Hey Deck Ready, since you have the disc why not create an ISO image of the disc and mount it? That way the game sees the disc.
It doesn’t work. It tells me to put the disk in when I install it that way. It’s my white whale
It seems as though the game is checking to see if the game disc is in a disc drive even if it's installed. If that's the case make an image of the disc and them mount the image of the disc so that the game can see it.
