I've been using almost exclusively spinners this year (other than bait) and having lots of success. I used to use them mostly in smaller rivers and streams for brown trout and brookies. I've since started using them on larger water where I've had trouble locating the fish and they are working a treat. I modify most of my spinners though...we all know they twist your line up. So I attach a swivel and split ring to each spinner so I can just tie them on. Also...10lb is the heaviest line I'd ever use for shore fishing trout...a good drag and light line is better, imo. I have 8lb on my long rod and 6lb on my smaller one. The lighter line let's me cast a lighter spinner way farther. Also...for small baits...my shorter more flexible rod with lighter line can cast the spinner farther. 6lb is perfect for trout spinners, imo, unless there are lots of snags and stuff. I got a 20lb Chinook last year on 4lb and my short 5.5foot rod and no net. Also...lots of fish like spinners...I've been getting some decent smallmouth mixed in with the trout since I started using them here. And I've caught pike, walleye, perch, crappie...even catfish on them.

I've donated plenty of spinners to the bottom of the Snag-agara over the past year. I'd say my ratio is 2:1 with spinners hung up on bottom vs Lakers/Steelhead I've caught out of there. Worth it though, it's great catching those big fish on fairly light-weight tackle. Spinners are quite effective for Lakers. My go-to rod is a 8'6" medium-heavy action, spinning reel, with 20 lb braid mainline to 10-12 lb fluoro down there from the shore. 2500-3000 size reels or a center pin is great setup to use there in the Fall/Winter/Spring.

I am using 10 lb braid and a 10 lb fluoro leader - the rod is one piece, 7 ft., Quantum Tour Edition rod, and the reel is a Pflueger President size 30 - thanks for writing in and good luck on the water :)

this was late spring - right now, the salmon will be starting to move in and once they are done (in Nov) the steelhead take over :)

Beautiful fish! Up here in Northern Ontario I never use more than 6 lb test, I prefer to play the drag and have a good fight I always found anything heavier was overkill. I'll have to check out the thundermist website,, I'm a Mepps man myself but can't argue with those results haha! Great video!

@A8W That's a fair point, I don't really river fish other than for Walleye. I'd be eating that Laker either way though! lol
