  • Today's famous Grave visit, I pay tribute and visit the final resting place of legendary comedian Eric Morecambe.
John Eric Bartholomew OBE (14 May 1926 - 28 May 1984), known by his stage name Eric Morecambe, was an English comedian who together with Ernie Wise formed the double act Morecambe and Wise. The partnership lasted from 1941 until Morecambe's death in 1984. Morecambe took his stage name from his home town, the seaside resort of Morecambe in Lancashire.

For those of us over 50 it's difficult to hear an emergency siren and not think, 'he'll never sell ice-creams at that speed. Eric was a one off. His comedy timing was impeccable and I love him to this day.

Oh my goodness, this is a person so close to my heart. My darling dad not only looked like Eric, but made us laugh as children when he did all the things he did, like the paper bag trick, shaking his glasses and the “Bring Me Sunshine” dance. When Eric died, my dad was seriously ill in hospital himself and we decided not to tell him. 3 days later my dad died and we would like to think he has finally met his hero at last. God bless Eric ❤ Thank you Paul.

There is The Eric Morecambe Centre theatre in Harpenden donated by his wife Joan who is still alive and in her 90's. A lovely gesture by Joan and a great facility used by many. Eric and Ernie were the cream of all Comedians, Never forget the sketch with Andre Previn where Eric was accused of playing the wrong notes on the Piano, He grabbed Andre Previn by the lapels and said ' I am playing the right notes but not necessarily in the right order ', Comedy Gold. I was at The Roses Theatre in Tewkesbury for Eric's last show. It was just intended to be a chat with Stan Stennett and hearing his stories. It was hysterical. They started by telling how they pranked each other with Whoopee Cushions. It just got funnier and funnier. The interval was a blessing to catch our breath. The second half started where the first left off. My ribs really hurt from laughing. At the end, Eric rushed round the stage playing the musical instruments. He went off then came back again. He went off again then a couple of minutes later a stage hand asked if there was a doctor in the house. The whole audience froze. The Mayor, sitting next to Joan was a GP so they rushed to help. We sat in silence for what seemed a long time. We all filed out in silence because somehow we knew.
This will forever be etched in my mind because we loved him so much. It is believed that when Stan eventually got back to his office and sat down, Eric had put a whoopee cushion on his chair.
In the Roses Theatre today there is a room called, the "Eric Morecambe Room". For a long time a red admiral flew around the auditorium which we all thought was Eric as it lived far longer than they normally live. Thank you for finding Eric for us. He is so loved so many years after that devastating evening.

Ernie did have a career after Eric a bit like Ronnie Corbett after the death of Ronnie B but again like Ronnie C it wasn't the same after the death of his comedy partner.
Ernie did stage work, TV appearances and quiz and panel shows but to be honest the stuffing had been knocked out of him and most interviewers just wanted him to talk about Eric. Tommy Cannon is probably getting the same these days.

He’s such a funny guy, I used to do the invisible ball and paper bag trick for my two sons and they were blown away by the simple trick. RIP Eric ❤. The church is stunning too ❤

Thank you such a lovely film. I too watched them on TV, loved them both very funny. They are still on TV, still very funny. Shows worth showing again. They were two of a kind. The centenaries of their births will be coming up in a few years. Thanks again and what a lovely resting place for a lovely funny man.

They are up somewhere in a heavenly Royal Variety Performance in front of Liz and Phil.
      What a line-up!
Eric and Ernie, Tommy Cooper, Tony Hancock, Roy Castle dancing, four candles? How about Max Miller getting his red and blue books out? Phil would love that....
All comedians we didn't just laugh at we genuinely loved. I honestly can't think of any modern comparison to rival that generation.
