  • A story of why I bought five different Arc'teryx hardshells. How they are different in size and fit from a trim fit to a regular fit. Also a bit on layering with them. Hardshells are an important part of your outdoor adventures, keeping you waterproof and windproof! Hopefully this video will help to show how each is a bit different, and which may be right for you.

These are the best reviews. We do not have all those jackets. And for someone who has and gives an honest review who is not sponsored or given for free to review, thank you. Another thumbs up from me. And sorry if my responds are not grammatically perfect. Am from Europe and doing my best

I have been trying to understand Arc'ertyx for a while, and this is the only channel that really explains it so well.
Thank you for the great videos.

The pockets are higher so when you wear a pack with a waist-belt, or a belt full of mountain climbing equipment, the pockets are not blocked, access-wise. Nice review.

Hi Chris, I absolutely love your channel. Great format and real honesty. I've just started with jackets. Having bought a Rab Ladakh gtx.
Iam now looking for a Arc’teryx. I don't like the heavy loud Sv jacket but I do want a great jacket. It is for general use. Some hiking, scrambling (tiny bit). I don't need an insulated jacket. I do like hand pockets. I do want a strong GTX jacket but iam list mate.
You have all the knowledge on Arc’teryx. Please help me out. Your also a nice down to earth person. Iam 60 yrs old and live in the UK. Thanks Chris. Don't stop doing what your doing. . Cheers. Colin

Hi, any of the Beta series jackets would be great. They are designed to be a great all round shell. I believe that the lightweight has a more trim fit than the beta jacket, and the beta AR that are both a regular fit. It will still give you room for a layer or two under it, but the regular fitting jackets will be larger, and better suited for heavier layers, and a bit more mobility. with that said, I own two trim fitting betas, and I still have room under them for my Thorium down jacket. that's about the heaviest that I can put under them. But The AR, I can fit even a heavier jacket.
So if you want it for super cold weather with much heavier layers, and extra durability, the beta AR is your jacket, otherwise the Beta lightweight is awesome.

Hi Chris! Warm greetings from Portland Oregon (quite literally, we are having quite the heat wave)! I just went through the process of picking a hardshell jacket. I looked at both the Beta and the Beta LT in Medium and Large. Medium is the perfect size in Arc'teryx jackets and the only reason I tried the large was that in both the Beta and the Beta LT, the mediums, though they fit perfectly, left surprisingly little space for layering underneath (have an Atom LT jacket I want to be able to layer underneath a hadshell, and it was bulking up). The large was, not surprisingly too large. When I look at the description of the Beta and Beta LT on the Arc'teryx site, they are described as "fitted." The Beta AR is, on the other hand described as a Regular fit, but I was not quite ready to spend $600 on a jacket.
I ended up getting the Ralle. It is a regular fit (unlike the Beta and Beta LT), so my Atom LT fits perfectly under the Ralle and the regular size hood makes more sense for my usage of getting around town (I am not a hard core hiker, let along rock climber or glacier scaler).
And thank you for all of your postings! While I have very easy access to an actual brick and mortar Arc'teryx store, I much prefer going in armed with information provided by someone who appreciates the jackets and how they function and not trying to sell me anything. Please keep on the great work you are doing here.

The reason behind the Alpha SV's pockets is that Alpha is an alpine climbing line so you're supposed to wear it with a climbing harness that would obstruct regular pockets, which is why they're higher.

Thanks for your comment. Yes, you're right. That makes total sense. It's a great hardshell with a special purpose.

Love your videos, I’m also a jacket fanatic. So far I have the atom lt , fission sv , leaf cold wx hoody and some more from the Patagonia side as well . I’m lost trying to decide on a shell, was hoping you could help me decide. So far I’ve narrowed it down to Sabre , rush is and beta lt . Please help me I would love your input also feel free to recommend a different option if anything.

Hi Chris. So glad I found your channel. Your videos are very informative yet entertaining! So here comes my question: Which of the hardshells is the most silent regarding the crinkle sounds they seem to make? I need silence for wildlife photography 😂

    • @meandmyjackets
      @meandmyjackets  ปีที่แล้ว

Hi, Thank you for your support. So, all of the Gore-Tex hardshells are similar in that regard, The Alpha SV being the heaviest is the "loudest". I think that your best bet is the Beta LT, but I have another option for you.... Rab makes a shell called the Kinetic Alpine 2.0. It's more like a softshell, lightweight (but durable and Stretchy), but it's wind and waterproof. Really nice! They describe it as "A softshell with the protection of a Hardshell". I just got this piece to review, and I really like it. I should have my video on it out for next week.
I do believe that it's waterproof, but maybe not quite as good as a gore-tex hardshell, however I'm sure it will perform well in all but the most extreme downpours. I actually just bought one for my daughter who lives in Florida, and wanted a good raincoat for those frequent tropical rainstorms down there.
The Beta's are nice, don't get me wrong, but this Rab is soft, flexible, very breathable, windproof and waterproof. And it it will be quiet. Also a bit cheaper. Check it out.

I'm disappointed that the Zeta series was axed. I have the Zeta AR, and it checks all the boxes for a more versatile everyday hard shell. C-Knit backer, normal size hood (I wish they wouldn't put the giant helmet compatible hood on EVERYTHING). I'm trying to figure out which current hard shell is the most similar replacement.

I hear what you're saying, some hoods are huge. The Beta jacket has a smaller hood, also the Kadin and Norvan.
