  • A comparison between two Arc'teryx AR's. Both winter jackets. One contains goose down the other has synthetic insulation. A look at both jackets, and ways they are similar and yet different.

    I'm back again before another Arcteryx purchase. Thanks for this thorough review. I'm getting the Atom Heavyweight, formerly known as the Atom AR

    Thank you for your video. Which one would you recommend for winter everyday use celium or thorium?

    • @meandmyjackets
      @meandmyjackets  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thorium. It's got a tougher face fabric, fits more comfortably, and is a bit warmer. The Cerium is nice, but a much trimmer fit. It's made for more mountain activities, as it is lighter and more packable. I wear my thorium all the time in the winter. A great all around piece. If it gets really cold, I like to wear a covert fleece under it. Very nice combo when that extra bit of warmth is needed.

    Have you look into anything from Beyond Clothing? I have about the same jackets as you in Arcteryx sans Nuclei, also a couple of LEAF jackets. My problem with Cerium ( I have two) is the ever leaking down.

    Great you are mentioning name model and types Arcteryx jackets in title. That what most people are look for on YT

    Which of these two would you get to wear under a Beta Jacket shell? Assuming temperatures of -10C to 5C (regularly with rain/wind) and low-output activity.

      I would say The Atom AR. It's just as warm as the Thorium, and it's a better choice if its damp and rainy. You can always wear a fleece under it if you need more warmth. But it's a really nice comfortable and versatile jacket. I don't think that you would be disappointed.

    Interesting to hear the wind chill observations....how about breathability when things get to the higher or warmer range of the jackets? Great reviews! Thanks!

    • @meandmyjackets
      @meandmyjackets  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's a tough question. :) My gut feeling is that they are both warm, but the Atom AR may be slightly warmer as a stand alone option, and I think it would be the more breathable option if layered.

    I have an Atom R, which I love. I've had it for 3 or 4 years. It's my go to jacket in Vermont anytime its below 50ish. I'll wear it through a Vt winter hiking, going to the store, out to dinner etc, but if I'm walking around town outside or spending much time outside without exerting myself it isn't warm enough. I'm always surprised to hear people talk about how warm it is. Maybe, I got a dud or haven't maintained it well? Mine doesn't have anywhere near the loft the jacket you're wearing does. Any thoughts on that? FWIW, I also have 2 Atom LT's. It's definitely not an LT!
    Thanks

      My Atom AR is much warmer than the LT. Double the insulation. Have you tried washing it? that may help to "fluff" the insulation. Use the proper soap in the washing machine, a soap for technical apparel. Arc'teryx or graingers sell it.

    Thorium looks way warmer, but interesting to know that the atom is actually warmer!! bought the atom for the harsh Canadian winter. Thank you.

      The thorium is warm too, it's really close in my opinion, but I just felt that the Atom was a bit better in the cold wind. Both nice jackets.

      Both are great with my covert fleece under for even more warmth.

    The new Proton Heavyweight seems to be a top contender too! Any chance of a review at some point?

    • @meandmyjackets
      @meandmyjackets  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I would like to review the new proton, hopefully in the near future. However, I can guess that it is just like the other protons, just with a heavier insulation. I would guess that it still will nit be as warm as the Atom heavyweight, or the thorium as it is designed to breath. It's made for high output activities, and will not feel as warm when just worn casually.

    Nice vidéo! Do you think the AR Atom can take -20C?

    • @katlavery
      @katlavery ปีที่แล้ว +1

      On its own? I would say barely but not consistently and not for long periods of time. Also depends on how warm you run and how active you will be. I stood outside for 30 min in it in -17 and it was straddling the line.
