Enjoyed the review . Very informative and thorough. Seems like Alpha is only available in Black on Arc website, wish they had other color choices.
Thank you for watching the video. At this time Black is the only color, and as far as I can remember, they only offered Black and Red. Maybe they will add more color options soon.
Glad you are reviewing Norrona gears! Rare on TH-cam but so good!
Thank you, I agree that they make great stuff. I hope to review more in the future.
The updated Nuclei SV is out. Can you review it?
I saw that too, I'm glad that they are still offering this jacket, and are bringing back a revised edition. I do hope to review it some time in the near future. It looks very similar to the older one, but have added Hadron to the face fabric, and it now has 190g insulation in the body as the older version had 180g. Also there has been a increase of 100.00 in the price. But, I do suppose that you're getting a "better" jacket here with the revisions.
Hey Chris, thank you for the review! Question for ya - I’m 6’1 @ 180 lbs, with your knowledge of this jacket - should I go medium or large? Thank you!
I would say to go with the normal size that you wear with everything else. Just guessing here, but the medium may fit, but not give you any room to layer under it. Keep in mind that these shells are cut a bit larger to be worn over insulation layers. For example, a large size shell will fit perfectly over a large size insulation layer. No need to size up. This jacket is a regular fit, which means that it will have more room under it for heavier layers than a jacket that has a trim fit. I hope that I haven't confused you more, my best advice is to go with your normal size that you wear with anything else, and start there. It should be good.
Would this be good for skiing and snowboarding to be used as a shell?
It's a heavier weight shell with a "stiff" thick fabric. I'm sure that you could wear it skiing, but I would think that there are better choices. To me this is more of a general purpose, lower cost shell for multi-purpose use, or even just everyday around town. It is a heavier shell, so it should be durable, but it does not have a lot of features that a ski shell would have, such as a powder skirt, a pocket for your ski pass, a larger helmet compatible hood, etc. Patagonia simply calls it a "Rain Jacket".
Thank you for reviewing this.
Thank you for watching!🙂
5:30 , is it not 80d knit? Instead of 70 as you said?
Apparently Arc'teryx just updated this jacket, as it says on the bottom of the description on their website, "newly updated .... 80D face fabric". I did this review a few months ago, sorry for the confusion, but it was 70D when I did the review.
What colour is this in?
I don't remember the exact color, as I did this review about a year ago, but it seems to be very similar to the now available Pitch Blue/with Endless Blue.
is there a new nebula pro? because the nebula pro on the official webseite looks a little bit different.
They may have updated it. Rab seems to update things without any notice. So I can't tell you for sure. Anyway, I can't believe that they would make it worse.🙂
Mustard and ketchup 😂
@@snoobab_86 exactly!🙂
How do these compare to Patagonia Capilene Midweight base layer? Thanks.
I have not tried the Patagonia base layers yet, so I can't give an educated answer. Sorry.
Very informative. Thank you.
Thank you for watching. I hope the videos helped you.
Nice review. Thank you.
🙂
❤❤
I mostly wear all black but I have to say this burgundy Gamma MX looks super stylish on you. Especially without the hood. I like how you wear other hoodies under it 👌🏻
The new version has side and chest pockets. The 800 vs 850 difference is about 15 grams of total fill power.. Duck or Goose, it doesn't make a big difference if it is certified...
Thank you for the clarification. I was not sure about the side pockets. I agree with you about the down, Norrona makes great products, I can't believe that they would fill a top of the line jacket with garbage. I know that mine is very warm, and well built. I don't think that they would make the newer version a big downgrade.
@@meandmyjackets Exactly, more fill power does not mean better always. most of the extreme FP jackets are fragile because the down needs sure light materials to have its loft without restrictions. Most expedition jackets that need to be ruggedized have FP of 550 to 800
Hello, great wool hoodie for sure! whats size are you wearing? And how height and weight are you?
Sorry if I did not say that in the video, I always try include that, but sometimes I forget. I'm 6'2" 215lbs Size XL.
Excellent!!!!
Which size are you wearing? I'm 1'80m (6 feet) and I have no idea which size should I go for...
I am 6'2" 215 lbs Size XL. The Alpha SV is a hardshell designed to fit over heavier layers, so it is sized rather large to fit over those heavier pieces. So it depends on your use, and what you plan to wear under it. I would suggest watching my full length video about the Alpha SV to see how it fits on me stand alone, and with other layers. That may help you as well.
If I carry in a backpack a fleece, wind nylon jacket, puffy and harshell then sofshell is just an obsolete distraction. A useless piece of kit. Cant figure out a reason to carry one.
How does this compare to beta LT? Looking for a rain jacket that can be used in Australia. Also is it comparable to patagonias torrentshell 3l? I have one of those but it’s really loud
The SL is lighter than the LT (Beta Jacket). The SL has a helmet compatible hood, the Beta jacket does not. The SL is basically designed as a lightweight packable shell. The Beta Jacket is more of an everyday, versatile jacket like the Torrentshell. The Torrentshell is heavier, more "stiff" than these Betas. All of these jackets will be "loud", but the lighter the better, in my opinion.
@ thanks! After watching many of your reviews I decided to go with a Gamma LT! I really like how you combo’d it with Atom LT. I’ve got Atom SL and Proton LT which I think would work similar! Keep up the great work!
Very good review, thank you. I ve just bought one HH Odin for 80€ on a sale, to use it like a mid layer or shell, depends on the weather.
Nice, I'm sure that you will like it! 🙂
wasn't it 80x40 denier ?
It's actually 40d x 70d. What that means is, the fibers lengthwise are 40d, which is what makes the jacket lightweight and flexible. The 70d are the fibers crosswise, which makes the fabric stronger, more durable. that being said, most often the first "40d" is what we see most when jacket denier is listed, how light the jacket is.
i got it and it is really good
I am really happy to have found your channel. You are providing such great details and comparisons. I love Arcteryx and I have many of their jackets, so it’s great seeing reviews about some of the pieces I don’t have from them. I hope more people find your channel soon because you’re doing a great job 🎉
Thank you so much, that's great to hear. Thank you for watching, and I hope to continue to do many more videos! 🙂
Love it. Thank you.
Thank you for watching!🙂
looking good my man
🙂
Hi, I’m 6 foot, 210 - looking at the Xl - my hips are 36 inches and a abdomen 44 inches, I worry it would be too tight with a fleece mid and wool base layers. Please help
Hi, I'm 6'2" 215 lbs 36" waist and this is a size XL. I have room inside, but it's hard to say how a piece will fit everybody else. This is a great jacket, my advice would be to try it in your normal size first. The larger size may be too big and uncomfortable. Unless you are looking to wear heavier, "larger" pieces under it.
Patagonia ? 🤔, nah , they're just overpriced crap , along with some of your other mentioned brands that are not in Mountain Equipment's league of down jackets . 🤣🤣🤣 .
I am going to start reviewing Mountain Equipment stuff soon!!! I'm excited to try it.
I went for the Rab Ascent instead 🤣🤣🤣
A nice jacket as well!🙂
The Mythic G 🤔 ? It doesn't actually exist , only in fairytales 🤣🤣🤣
Thanks for the video. I looked at their website after you posted the video and unfortunately it says duck down. I wonder why they charge over 500 dollars and don't use goose down.
Norrona used to use goose down, but the new models have been downgraded to duck down. Maybe the company’s financial situation isn’t doing so well😶🌫
This is an interesting question. I see a couple of their down jackets say 90/10 duck down. The other descriptions do not specify what type of down, only weight and fill power. On their website, you can go to the info section, and see the materials used. Under the down heading, it just says that they source their down from the food industry in France, and that they use the highest quality down they can find. The research that I've done tells me that they use both. Goose down in some products and duck in others. This is a good question to ask Norrona directly. All I can say, is that this Trollveggen Down 850 jacket that I bought is super warm. It feels like a really great jacket to me. I honestly don't know if it has duck or goose down. This jacket is the older version, and the description for it did not specify if it has duck or goose down. However the newer version does say duck 90/10.
@@meandmyjackets I noticed that the latest 'duck down' products are labeled with 'Water repellent is treated down with PFC-free chemicals to minimize the water pick-up and quicker drying.' DWR treatment does reduce the loft of down, generally capped at 850. Norrona seems to have replaced the previous 850-fill goose down with 800-fill DWR-treated duck down. Perhaps this is to offset the cost of DWR treatment, which might explain why goose down wasn’t used.😶🌫
Thanks for the video . I was looking at this jacket or the tab electron but not sure if the infinity will be warm enough in -20c temps even with layering . Thoughts on both at these temps ? Thanks
I have not tried the Electron yet, I may guess is that it's a warmer / heavier jacket. The Infinity is a wind stopper, which is nice, but the fact remains that the insulation of the microlight is less. It's hard to give advice, it depends on your activity, and how warm you like to feel. Everyone is different.🙂
Thank you sir
Thank you for watching. I hope that it helped you.
Hi Chris! Very interesting video! That Norrona fleece, combined with the Cortazu All Weather Mid-Layer jacket and a good hardshell like the Cortazu All Weather Hardshell, should make a great combination for cold, rainy winter days. Do you recommend any pants that are warm and rain-resistant (not necessarily waterproof) to add to this combination?
@@joseluisperez4061 The Arc'teryx gamma MX pants. They have a similar fleece backing in them as in the gamma MX jackets.
Had this for 2 weeks, brilliant jacket 80% of Atom AR warmth ,like an Atom lt without the side panels that are too draughty for me. It is the perfect jacket and my cerium lt fits great underneath. Tried Cortazu after your reviews Chris 👌
Just received the panorama pile block model. That thing looks well made and seems to be very warm. Im in South Louisiana and a nice base layer a flannel or something and this jacket and Im set for anything “winter” here. So far im very impressed with the jacket. I also got the Victor rain shell to wear over the fleece when cold rain and wind is prevalent. I was all in on Patagonia up until now and have the retro pile fleece which is also very nice. I feel like as of now I found a new favorite fleece with the panorama pile block jacket which seems fantastic and I believe the same price as the Patagonia. Hopefully the panorama gets a light tan color with the darker zippers and chest pocket soon. Winking the eye HH! Good video! Just sub’d.
Online I can’t seem to find many colors for the Atom SL? Are they coming out with more soon?
I think Arc'teryx just took it down from their website too, perhaps because it's a lightweight jacket better for spring / fall, not winter. Not sure. Maybe updating it.
great vid. Thanks!
Do not use Gore-Tex, the amount of pfas that are in it, that that come off the jacket when it rains, is not good for anybody.
Thank you
Thank you for watching. Cortazu makes some great stuff! 🙂
i've just sold my beta AR with a drop hood and thinking of going storm hood? i use it for skiing and heavy rain. just looking at my options and want an opinion from an expert.
The Beta is always a versatile jacket. Have you considered one of the skiing jackets? The saber, the rush. They are great for skiing, but can be used everyday as well for any activity. They just have a powder skirt inside, but that is not a problem. Also, look at Norrona, they make great shells! Top of the line. Helly Hansen also has great ski shells. Sorry, I'm probably confusing you more. 🙂
@ sorry should of been a bit more specific. Beta is in budget and I wear a bib when snowboarding so snow skirt isn’t as much of a problem. I’m just torn between the hoods if I’m honest. I have a zeta that I daily and like the cut of that hood a lot more. Feels less invasive and ethically a lot nicer. Would the storm hood be closer to this?
One of the best jackets out there for me.
All of the Atom jackets are great pieces.
I live in my Atom LT - good jackets. Great informative video. Thanks. All the best Clive.
Nice, Thank you for watching.
Yikes this is high school quality
What's your height and weight and what size is this jacket?
Sorry, I tried to mention that in all my videos but occasionally I forget. I am 6'2" 215 lb. Size XL
@@meandmyjackets Perfect, thank you! When you straighten your arms out, I am curious how far past the wrists does that jacket go up? I've tried on other HH jackets, where the sleeves run a bit short when I expend my arms. Thinking about a XXL in this jacket, 5'10" 190 here.
@@trappistachel Hi, I do not have that jacket any longer to answer your question, but I don't recall an issue of the sleeves being too short.
Is it made with PFAS?
A good question to ask Arc'teryx. I really don't know how much or how little PFA's are in the jacket.
I have the SL but didn't know about the button. Thanks! Always learn something in these vids.
It's a nice addition, since the hood is so light.
Is this ideal for early spring/summer?
Yes, fall too.🙂
Do you prefer this over the proton lightweight? Great video as always!❤
I have worn this a lot, but I love the octaloft insulation in the proton. The proton is a warmer jacket, as it has insulation throughout the entire jacket. The Atom is good for warmer weather. Each has it's place.🙂
The Proton has one big disadvantage: It is not wind-proof because extra breathable. I sold mine, after the very cold attempt to use it on bike tours and in windy weather, and I was just cold, always cold. This is the big difference. I would recommend the Proton only as a midlayer (alternative to Fleece) or in high alpine situations (where breathability is key because of the temperature difference between moving body and outside). This SL is by far the most versatile jacket I know. Perfect for travelling, on all kind of tours (bike, hike, sail, beach, alpine - it is one of the best).
@@1234eyes1234 I agree with you, it depends on your use. The Proton's are perfect under a shell, to block the cold wind. But on days that are not windy, they can be a nice choice. Again, it depends on your use. Thank you for commenting.
I wear my thorium in med under my beta AR in large. And it’s perfect.
Nice combo. 🙂
