    Notice how so many franchises seemed to peaked around the mid 2000's. I think it's because gaming was a growing industry but not quite as large as it is now. It was more about building and growing franchises than appeasing shareholders. I consider myself lucky that I was a teenager at that time and got to experience that era at that age.

    • @wtfiswiththosehandles
      @wtfiswiththosehandles 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +16

      I think it's because gaming was for enthusiasts until 2010 or so, then it became mainstream and casual. Games used to be hard and interesting, now they're mostly bland and easy. At least the ones from major developers. Lucky for us we have a huge indie game market these days, thanks to holy Gaben.

    • @contramundi1
      @contramundi1 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +16

      guess what became popular around that time... social media. gaming was a relatively niche market that didn't have a huge following aside from actual gamers. then social media became a thing and all the casuals were introduced to gaming. it went from niche to mainstream in a few years. the thing with niche markets is that quality is paramount. selling bad quallity to a small audience has huge reprecusions. selling bad quality to a massive audience not as much. I think that is why gaming sucks these days.

      Maybe you and Jake are just similar in age and are both the same level of jaded? Honestly even the "bad games" that release these days are more fun than the games of our youth, nostalgia is just a powerful thing

      @@contramundi1 except 2o23 was probably the best year of gaming the industry has every had. Hogwarts legacy, Jedi survivor, tears of the kingdom, starfield, resident evil 4, Alan Wake 2, balfurs gate 3, spiderman 2, etc and I know I'm forgetting several great games from last year.
      The people that complain about the state of the gaming industry today vs 30 years ago is just an anhedonic curmudgeon wearing rose covered glasses and disillusioning themselves with the nostalgia. video games were not a niche market in the 90s and 00s, there's a reason the PS2 is still the best selling console of all time even though it was the PS3 generation that was introduced with social media. It only seemed niche to you at the time because you were a child. Gaming doesn't suck today, your ability to enjoy things in life does though

    In a world where a franchise like Dark Souls has taken off and become so beloved, I'm genuinely surprised that Ninja Gaiden hasn't re-emerged. The controls for that game felt a little clunky and the enemies and level design were incredibly unforgiving, but much like dark souls, once you kind of figured things out and stuff clicked into place you were like "Actually, this has to be one of the best action games I've ever played."

      Because the creator was out and the team left were the ones that made Ninja Gaiden 3 and that was trash. Since then they made Nioh and that is way more successful than Ninja Gaiden ever was. Now they are making Rise of the Ronin. So Ninja Gaiden is probably a low priority for them.

The companies that made the original fear split and both had the rights to the title and they both started working in fear 2 simultaneously. I agree with nearly all your points. My only disagreement is your take on Dead Rising. DR1 was groundbreaking, amazingly fun, and frustratingly hard all at the same time. Finding stuff around the mall and discovering how each handles in combat rewarded exploration. Having to keep up on a strict mission schedule was cool but felt overwhelming when coupled with all the side encounters and constant radio calls but honestly the whole time management thing was part of the charm of that entry. The main story being serious with survivor encounters being a grab bag of silly or brutal psycho made meeting them interesting and scary at the same time. Now if you ask me, DR2 did a lot of things right. It introduced the idea of combining weapons to make really cool and fun McGuiver style weapons which was a huge staple in zombie movies that no one realized was lacking in the formula until they had it. Transitioning the time management to focus on zombrex as well as being late helped mantain a sense of urgency while cutting down on the number of encounters to feel more manageable. The story was cool, focusing on a more personal story while also showing off what our society would be like once we became accustomed to the idea that zombies are just apart of everyday life now. DR2 introduced a lot of cool ideas and still maintained this identity of being stuck in a hopeless world, surrounded by tragedy and struggling strangers, where your only means of survival was dependent on your creativity. For me DR3 is where the framchise peaked. It made for an excellent launch title, showing off all sorts of cool ideas like the best smartglass integration of xbox games and vehicle combos. The graphics were amazing without bogging down the system and they introduced so many new weapon combinations with the ability to build them on the fly. The characters were a great balance of memorable, satire, and weird. The story was fun and well paced, had fun beats and was actually engaging. The leveling system was awesome because it actually was given depth beyond level milestone perks. It was just bursting with originality and good ideas. DR4 is where it kind of just gave up. There wasn't really anything new going on at all. No new ideas outside of a limited time exosuit that felt more uninspired than intended. Like they were trying to recapture the first game without understanding what made the series fun in the first place. It straight up has the same feeling as the saints row reboot.

      Gotta add Call of Duty to that list as well.. IMO Battlefield has only ever had 1 not so good game and that being the most recent one, the rest have been quite good but everyone has their own opinion.

    I clicked on this mainly because I was curious to see which of these I had played in the past. It turns out that I have played none of them. I suppose the reason is that they are all action games, and I'm not a fan of action games unless they are really easy and have something else besides action going on. Other types of games have experienced franchise rot too. Two of my old favorites that still pain me to this day are SimCity and Ultima. SimCity went from strength to strength beginning with the first game and culminating with SimCity 4. Then, it went off in a different direction with Societies (which old fans did not like) and then it crashed and burned with the disastrous launch of SimCity 2013. Cities: Skylines ended up being the spiritual successor, but with the disastrous launch of Cities: Skylines 2, maybe history is repeating itself.
    Ultima went through some strange experiments in the earlier games, but the series really found its footing with Ultima IV, and it continued to have strong entries through both parts of Ultima VII, the spin-offs of Ultima VI, and the Underworld games. Then, Ultima VIII came along, and with it, the full expression of the malign influence of Electronic Arts. It introduced action elements (which were not appreciated by the long time nerdy fans who don't have reflexes), including some very clumsy platforming (which was fortunately made somewhat less bad in an update). On top of that, it released in a buggy and unfinished state, and the expansion, which might have fixed some of the problems, was canceled. There are good ideas at its core, but its execution is mixed. Then, Ultima IX was a disaster. It got into development hell, and then the developers focused too much on the new 3-D engine and the graphics, and as a result, there isn't much game. It was a rushed out, buggy mess, and it was the end of the main line of the franchise. (The spin-off Ultima Online was successful, but it was never relevant to me since I have no interest in online games.)
    As for more recent franchises, I fear that Fallout is on this trajectory, and Elder Scrolls could be too. Fallout 4 is a mess in many ways but still has enough good points to be worth playing with mods. The launch disaster of Fallout 76 and the negative responses to Starfield do not leave me with much hope for future Fallout and Elder Scrolls games.
    If there is to be a follow-up to this video (and there should be, since the game industry has been littered with franchise rot almost from the start), it would be nice to see it branch out into different genres.

      You talk as if you are an expert on games. However, the fact is that you just wrote off an entire genre of games as bad just because ‘I am not a fan of action’. That means you think most games are beneath you, which means your views about games are generally gonna be hot takes. In other words, your views will be off track for the most part. Until you can learn to be more open to other types of games instead of just sticking to your small bubble, I suggest that you hold off on expressing your views. You’re not as insightful as you think you are, Ms. ‘I’m too good for action games’.

    Sports games are probably too easy of a target. Granted, I haven't played *every* installment, but Madden, MLB The Show, and NASCAR Heat have gotten increasingly disappointing every year.

      The multiplayer was at least, the singleplayer used a different engine AND was developed by a different team altogether.

      The 2010 game was the only one I played and I loved it. It was my first ever console game so I’ll always remember it being fun but also challenging in certain spots

    Tho I've only played the 1st game, I've heard the Lost Planet series dropped off after Extreme Condition, AKA the first game. The multiplayer of the sequel is enjoyed to my knowledge, but the single player stuff I'm unsure of due to not playing it. While Lost Planet 3, which I have access to on PS Plus Premium, but haven't gotten around to playing it yet. I've heard people weren't very happy with it, and the slightly more horror-ish angle they went with it... and now the series is officially dead.
    Kinda sad, cuz I do actually enjoy Lost Planet more than Capcom's other popular IP, the Monster Hunter series. So it's unfortunate that we might not see another entry anytime soon, even in a remake form.

    I'll put the Call of Duty franchise on this list somewhere. To me these games died when they went all futuristic on us. I stopped actively playing after Black Ops 2 in 2012. The last good series of Call of Duty games to me was the original Modern Warfare Series.

    Call of Duty, Assassin's Creed, Command & Conquer, Dynasty Warrior, Fifa, Arkham, Battlefield... Pretty much every franchise that gradually faded from our view.

      I was going to say Dynasty Warriors, as a kid to an adult, I played EVERY DW game ever made outside of the first. Even the empires, Xtremes and the Orochi series. Once I heard what 9 was and the reviews for it that's when I didn't buy it and was sadden to hear , a series I literally grew up on and had fond memories playing coop on with buddies, was finally dead + radically changed. Hoping, even if it's more of the same, when 10 comes out if it does, it's the old formula and can be mindless joy again though haha
