  • After switching things up to a flip-front helmet, it was time to refresh the motovlogging setup for this new style of lid and the problems it presented.
    In this video, as well as finding a new mounting position for the action cameras and explaining my audio setup, I also fit the SENA ST1 Spider, SENA's entry level, Mesh only intercom system to my HJC RPHA 90S Carbon.

    Hiya Andy, very nice video and great setup. Thanks for introducing me to Sugru a couple of years ago - when my daughter got her first car the plastic spare-tire-holder-downer-thingy was broken and the Sugru fixed it right up.

    Thanks for the heads up on the speed link mic. Ordered one through your link. Bought a non BT Zoom F2 a few months ago, but only used it for voice overs so far as I hadn’t yet worked out mic placement yet and hadn’t decided on trying to mount it inside somewhere or put up with it in pocket. Glad to see you have a workable solution! Hope you are enjoying the new KTM!

      My pleasure and cheers for using the link! Trial and error mate, you’ll find what works for you. The cable out of the helmet is annoying, but it’s worth it to me for the reduced weight on the head. Loving the KTM so far, just wish i had more time and weather for riding!!

    Love these setup vids.
    On the subject of mics, I think I'm close to finding the holy grail for my setup; remarkably it's a headphone mic. I lopped off the wire/headphone without the mic on a set of bud headphones and it turns out the mic still works! On the set I use you can even cut off the headphone bud from the wire with the mic which cleans up the whole setup. I think as these mics are designed to be used close to your mouth I get almost zero blowing out, distortion and clipping. I need to redesign my deadcat as the mic unit itself is quite long but the improvement has been night and day.
    Wind noise at speed is still an issue, but I think you'd be hard-pressed to find a motorvlogging setup at any price that sorts that issue.

    • @AndyManCam
      @AndyManCam  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That’s a great tip mate! I’m trying that! Sometimes the simplest answers are right in front of your face! Too right about wind noise though. Even if you completely eradicate the wind getting to the mic, it still picks up the noise of the wind on the outside of the helmet!

    After multiple media mods, and more recently the GoPro mic adapter, destroying my creativity dreams, I think I'm going to have to opt for the external recorder. The Zoom H1N I've got works well but bulky and doesn't seem to enjoy taking an external charge to keep it running on a trip, so I'm going through batteries like there's no tomorrow! Great video. I've always gone back and forth between recording straight into GoPro versus using an external recorded. but I just got a flip up helmet, so I'm thinking of using the external recorded and just clip the mic somewhere inside the helmet just whilst I'm recording, and when I don't need it I can easily take it off, that way I don't have to mess with cables, have them hanging around when I'm not recording, that sort of stuff. We'll see how it goes. I have the Zoom h1n already, which I guess I'll keep it it for the ambient/engine/exhaust sound, and I've just placed an order for the Zoom F2, as my main audio recorder for the voice.
    In this video there was a big difference between the H1n and F2, I can only assume that's due to the mic placement. THe F2, sounded more muffled. Have you tried testing them side by side, in the same position, just to see if the overall quality is the same?

    Had a zoom F2 for a while, bought the speed link mic and positioned it as you demonstrate.
    Do you drop the WAV file from the F2 straight into your video editing software, or do you “clean it up” in an audio editor first?
    Works really well but getting a light background hiss on first attempt. Having a dabble with WaveLab Cast that comes with the F2, but not sure what I should be looking for/trying.

    I've always used Sugru to mount my cameras, used it to block of unwanted holes on my airbox where I've removed the crankcase breather and KLEEN air system (aka pairs system). If you wanted it to be a little more pro looking, you can also paint the sugru, I've done that a few times too.
    I also have not used the Gopro mic adaptors for a few years as they are (as you say), an "overpriced piece of shh". I also use an external recorder, a pretty small Olympus recorder, mines not as small as yours though lol

    • @HalfdeadRider
      @HalfdeadRider ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sony ECM-LV1 is where expensive is actually better btw lol, just upgraded after six years using the old model, tried many of the cheap smaller options over the years, always ended up back with the Sony stereo mic. Definitely worth a look, even with a wind sock, and deadcat on my audio is very good, I do edit the wind out a little in post though tbh, but it's not that bad when being good.

    • @AndyManCam
      @AndyManCam  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There really is no limit to what you can do with it! I've never tried to paint it though, that's cool! The DJI Action 3 uses a very simple 3rd parts adapter for the external mic. The only problem is that the gain is WAY too high for helmet stuff. Hopefully they'll fix that.

    • @AndyManCam
      @AndyManCam  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh really?! What is the USP of it? does it deal with the high dynamics well? I wouldn't be opposed to spending a bit extra if the mic was going to work better than anything I've ever used before.

      @@AndyManCam It was about £30 (the OG back in 2016 was only £13), it seems to deal with high dynamics well, it does have some inbuilt features that probably help. Hi Andy, as ever a great vid 👍. Do you put your previous audio issues down to the Packtalk Slim and its perhaps more compromised aerial? Something the Packtalk Bold or Edge would correct? Presumably you will need to still use a Cardo set-up when out in the future with The Likeable Rider, or does the Senna Mesh system link to Cardo's?

    • @AndyManCam
      @AndyManCam  ปีที่แล้ว

      Absolutely Adrian. A bit of Testing when i got home showed that as soon as the Slim was powered up, the interference started. But it wasn’t due to the antenna i don’t think, because the mic was also completely dead. Aswell as the fact that i had over a year with the exact same Setup and no troubles. So the intercom was altogether up the spout and was having a major meltdown. Unrepairable. I will still need to use a Cardo to chat with TLR, as the Sena ONLY works with other Sena mesh based systems. No cross brand bridging possible 🥺

    Do you notice any added weight of the flip-front at all? How about the noise level? It is supposed to be pretty good in the RPHA 90S. I'm shopping for a new helmut for next year and was wondering about this.

    • @AndyManCam
      @AndyManCam  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Because i have the Carbon version, the difference between the ‚standard‘ RPHA 70 and the 90s was negligible. Obviously there’s a bit more strain on the back of the neck when the front is flipped up, but i don’t do that for too long while riding. I’ve also started using a chest mount quite often which means, for me at least, the helmet feels overall lighter! The noise is not any worse, but it’s different. The RPHA 70 seemed quieter because the wind noise comes from a different area. On the 90S i think it’s somehow wider, so there’s a bit more wind rush under the ears. Obviously lots of variables like how long/thick your neck is, what collar your jacket has, how noisy your screen is etc.

      At any rate, I'm torn between this helmet and the Shoei GT-Air II, which is a full-face. Both are really high quality. Both have great noise numbers. And yet the one thing I'm amazed about is this helmet having almost the same weight as the Shoei, yet being a flip-front. That practically also cancels out the other concern I have with the RPHA, and that is the centrally opened visor. My current helmet has that and it's a PITA with gloves. The Shoei has a tab on the left of the visor to open it.
      Oh, and the place I'm looking to get the helmet from has the RPHA 90 Carbon S on sale for 402 euros, which is 16 Euros cheaper than what they are selling the Shoei for. That is really a good deal. Both are a good deal.... decisions.. decisions.....
