    Brilliant review Andy. You’re the only one who pays as much attention to the sound as you do picture quality. As a fellow motovlogger and TV cameraman for 35 years, you answered everything I wanted to know perfectly. You’re also one of the few of us who knows why you should be shooting in 25p! Thanks again for a very enjoyable and comprehensive review. Dave.

    Sorry for the redundancy to the other reviews but: positively BRILLIANT. Well done. Texas USA here. You've got the full package on this video: wonderful writing, excellent editing, marvelous music, and some really clever commentary. (I would have said charming commentary but then I'd have to write "chommentary" so...). Andy, you've done a truly fine job on this and I found it extremely helpful. I had already bought the One RS but your video helped me better understand its capabilities. Thanks (Sorry I seem to be late to the party. The other comments are at least a year old. Maybe video takes that long to cross to the other side of the pond)?

    As a technophobe I almost didn't watch this one. Glad I did. Looks like a great piece of kit. To my untrained eye, apart from a slight colour difference, couldn't really tell much difference between the Insta and the GoPro. I hope loads of folks swap from the latter to the former. It'd be the kick up the arse GoPro deserves and needs. Top notch review. Cheers 👍

      I personally love my hero 8, but was looking to get a additional camera with horizon leveling capabilities more refined as the hero 10 is. I didn't know this existed until I stumbled over it and started investigating, pretty sure I'll try to pick up the insta 360 one rs 4k, if I like it so much I can apparently add on the 5.7k 360 lense later as a modification. To my eyes, the one rs takes the win in the low light and hdr action capabilities. Definitely a win.

    It's a great point at 1:00. When I realized my existing batteries, extra batteries, 3rd party charger, 360 lens and 1 inch lens would work with the new brain I was so happy. I initially was sad about how much I had to pay for all of that but being able to get the new core and 4k boost lens kit for 270$ with the upgrade coupon validated my choice immediately. It's something they didn't have to do, but it shows that their modular platform may be the best option going forward. It gives us a smaller screen and maybe it makes it harder to figure out sound as it has to fit everythign into the corner of the camera instead of putting mics on both sides of the camera, but it turns upgrades like extra batteries and lenses into something real photographers have enjoyed, permanence. I can use any of my Canon lenses on any of the same class of cameras. New cameras are pricy but at least some of what I buy stays with me.
    OneRS slwo mo was trash though. Glad I don't use slow mo. But it looked fine when there weren't things like poles with gross aliasing.

      @AndyManCam  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I totally agree. They’ve made a great product with this Modular system. I’m hoping they’ll be adding more exciting stuff to the range soon!

    Awesome quality video Andy. I'm rather tempted by this One RS, the cost of GoPro's is to high these days so the lower price of the RS suits my budget much better.
    Only question I do have (didn't spot the info in the video) is the camera waterproof out the box, or does it require a different case?

    • @AndyManCam
      @AndyManCam  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Many thanks Dave. The RS really does have a lot going for it. Even if it can't 100% beat the gopro at the helmet mounted game, it beats it at a lot of other games instead! The camera is waterproof to 16ft, when in the bumper case thingy that's in the box. There is a dive case, but that might be overkill for what we do! 😆

    Great review! I do think you'd need to test it against the latest GoPro for it to be a fair comparison but I also appreciate you don't want to buy one just to do that. The 9 and 10 now have the media mod, so it's a bit easier to record audio as you don't need that horrible adapter, but it's still pricey! The downside of the R for me was sound, it just wasn't usable as a serious GoPro alternative. Still, awesome job! 👍

    • @AndyManCam
      @AndyManCam  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Cheers Dan. I’ll be honest, i did consider getting a Hero 10, just to include it in this test. But it was far too much money and i really don’t want one! I’ll be honest, I’m dead against this media mod nonsense. It’s an over engineered, turnover increasing solution to a simple problem. They almost hit the mark with the Hero 8 (except for that fixed lens). Now the cameras are bigger AND you have to fit another box around that to get audio AND without the (also turnover inflating) lens mod, they have the same or possibly even less FOV than the One RS. 🤦🏻‍♂️ I do my audio with an external recorder again now!! 🤣

    • @Englishbikerdan
      @Englishbikerdan 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@AndyManCam Absolutely agree. They could totally create a GoPro with audio capabilities built in, but choose not to because of greed. Sadly, it's the only real solution for me without using an external recorder as you do. Which I find too much of a pain in the bum to do constantly, but I might go back to it at some point in the future as it does sound better using an external recorder. Anyway, I'm waffling, enjoyed the vid! Take care!

    • @AndyManCam
      @AndyManCam  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The thing that baffles me is that there’s a DAC in the camera. Otherwise there’d be no audio from the built in mics. But then the external mic adapter has another DAC in it that we have to pay for! (And it’s far more susceptible to problems simply by being external). You nailed it with the greed! Now I’m waffling! 😆

    Awesome video! Plenty of in depth info! Nicely done!. Owner of two ONE R cameras and love them., The only problem I see with Insta360 is their marketing & pricing strategy... (I get it, they are here to make money). They have the so called bundles... so if your first, one and only camera it's ok. But most now use the 360 module and their bundles do not make sense at all...
    The Twin edition is £499.99 but if you create your own bundle (One RS core + 360 Module - if you need only the 360mod that is) is £529.98!. I mean... seriously? That stops me for spending cash! If they had a 360 edition only at let's say £400 I would not consider twice.... what a shame (plus they would attract far more buyers). Anyhow... just my 2c. Other than that great piece of kit.

    • @AndyManCam
      @AndyManCam  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Mr.MK! That is a bit odd with the pricing. Totally agree that a midway priced 360 only bundle would make more sense.

    Hi Andy, I bought a Go Pro 10 a few days ago (as it was on sale) so did not do too much research, before the sale ended just yesterday. However, I have yet to open it, and can return it within 30 days (I think it is) if I like. Yours is at least the third, in-depth comparison video between the Insta 360 and Go Pro I've watched, the other two being the Go Pro 10 used. So far (except for the one-inch sensor obviously better in very low light on the Insta 360), I haven't seen a huge difference in quality. Sometimes too much sharpness is almost a little distracting, even seemingly more sharper than what our eyes can ' naturally' see! I'm still trying to decide which to go for though. Don't care about 360 and some other effects, and even though it's only a tiny bit smaller, I really like the compactness of the Go Pro, lugging around enough junk on trips as it is!

    • @AndyManCam
      @AndyManCam  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Totally agree Joe. Too much sharpness is unnerving. I reckon that at that level the difference between the hero 10 and the Insta would be pretty small in terms of quality. So ultimately it comes down to getting the camera that works for you. No doubt that the cageless design of the Gopro does make the camera somewhat more compact. If it works for you and you enjoy using it, then that’s probably the one to stick with. 👍🏻

    Great video. have you had any issues with it? SD card errors, freezes, overheating, etc..? Would you consider, or perhaps you've done it already, using this as your main vlogging camera? I'm only asking as I've seen plenty of people reviewing various cameras, or whatever else, and they would praise how good it is, but then they would still stick to gopro, despite how many problems gopro has.
    I felt the audio was quite bad when you were riding at 60+ mph, i wonder whether that's something to do with the camera, or if the audio would be better with gopro? I think you mentioned an external recorder. is that what you normally use? I have one of those as well, but I felt its more convenient to just feed the audio directly into the camera, currently into a gopro, compared to bringing along another device to record the audio seperately. Plus with a camera it's easy to start & stop on the go, whilst with an external recorder you either have to stop every time and start the recorder whilst you also start the video, OR record the audio for the whole journey, and you'll end up with one file, whilst with the camera, you might record 5-6 different smaller clips, and then matching everything in post becomes a bit more tricky.
    Plus, I felt that when using an external recorder, whilst it gives you the best voice quality, it picks up less of the exhaust sounds. But recording dirrectly into a gopro, the sounds adjust itself on my voice when I'm talking or picks up more of the exhaust sounds when I'm not talking, so I sort of prefer recording directly into the camera for this reason.

Gopro just do what they want, Insta do what the customer wants! I also respect not adhering to this crazy Apple-like need to release something every year. All that shows me is that the products aren't built to stand the test of time and that they're not fully thought through. I'd rather buy a camera every 3 years, but gain some real advantages from the new one. I wouldn't touch a Hero 9 or 10 with a dirty stick. Great video, and I like your in-depth analysis (and the presentation of the Insta360 One RS contents!)
    Personally, after being tremendously disappointed by the Insta360 One R core (it was freezing and doing whatever it felt like and, in one case, it even auto-formatted the footage it shot...), I was ready to just sell every Insta360-related item from my camera box, but then decided to give the One RS Core and 4K Boosted Lens a shot to see if things have improved stability-wise, as Insta360 offers me an editing feature that the other action cameras can't (montion blur in Timelapse). So, I'm currently waiting for the new camera to arrive.
    As for driving footage, what I find to be the hardest type of video to make is driving videos during winter (that's why you don't see almost any of these in my channel); the exposure, the lack of leafage on the trees... everything goes sideways in winter driving videos, so this Spring I've decided to purchase some ND filters and see how it goes from there, but so far, I've seen so much improvement, that I've even purchased ND filters for my Insta360 1" Lens Mod (also in the parcel with the new RS Core). Maybe next Winter I'll be able to show some Winter Greece goodness!

      Cheers Smokey! I’m not surprised mate. 6k widescreen has a lot going for it, just the execution is a little lacking. The stabilisation is way more jerky and the crop is extreme. Hopefully they’ll improve the crap out of that with firmware and then the cinematography can begin!! Once ND filters are available too, it’ll be Scorcese level motovlogging from noon till night! 😆

    Q 1 . Which bike is that...? still clueless, although with the exhaust not could be from Triumph stead....
    Q 2. In 4K mode is frame rate limited to a max of 30FPS or 60 FPS is available?
    Q 3. If Moto Vlogging is main purpose n occasional hand held vlog, which one is better vfm, Insta 360 One RS 4K standalone or Twin Edition....?????

      Thanks D! It’s a Honda CB1000R. 4K goes up to 60fps, but there is a bit of a crop. I think there’s an example later on in the video. I reckon the twin edition will always be better vfm because at some point you’ll want to create a cool sweeping shot while you’re riding and the 360 lens is the only way to do it without a film crew! And when that happens the 360 lens on its own will cost you way more than in the bundle! 😉

    video quality looks close between them, gopro always has that juicy ultra vivid look to it (which is actually not true to life in my experience but does look appealing!), however the versatility and well thought out design features on the 360 make it a no-brainer for me, as a solo motovlogging camera it looks like just the ticket. Hi Andy! Great vid. Thanks to guys like you, I'm now inspired to record some of the best bike roads in Australia, just as a travel vlog for myself and anyone interested. I've recently bought online an Insta360 One RS 4K edition and an alternate 1 inch lens. I want to use it primarily as a chin mount. I didn't get a 360 lens as I thought I could option it later, while for now preferring a One X2 instead for 360 shots and retaining the RS on the helmet. On a limited budget this covers my essential requirements. Question time: I'm getting the mic adaptor and I see it has a USB C fitting for charging. Pardon my technical ignorance, but will that accept a microphone with a USB C connector or do I have to have one with a 3.5 jack? The reason I ask is that I would prefer to run the cable up to the underside of the adaptor. Thanks in advance. Stephen

  • @Rhoenschrat
    @Rhoenschrat 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @AndyManCam
      @AndyManCam  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm afraid I dont know. They do mention something about pairing with the Rode Wireless Go II, but I don't know if that is wireless, directly wired or through the mic adapter. I do know that you can connect Airpods to the camera, and I even managed to connect my Jabra Elite 65T headphones and record audio with them. But the quality was quite 'thin'. Sorry I can't be of more help, but I couldn't free up the funds from the finance minister to buy a Rode Wireless Mic for testing! 😜

      Like i often say with video, if it looks good, it is good! I totally see what you mean though. I think the slightly narrower FOV and increased detail on the Insta360 gives that effect. More ‚realistic‘ video. Sadly since going back to a seperate audio recorder, i haven’t tried the mic dongle for the OneRS enough to give a definitive opinion. For me, the FOV is just that little bit too narrow for the effect that i want as a helmet cam. Otherwise, very impressive but of kit. The battery on the OneRS is always the last of all my cameras to give up, by a long shot! And the active HDR is pretty cool too. Basically i think that (aside from the audio) it comes down to how nice the footage looks to your eyes.

      Pretty much. The celluloid development all goes on INSIDE the camera now! At least, i can't think how else they might do it. Impressive miniaturisation really.... I guess that the why is the versatility. The 360 footage is awesome, but when you want some footage that's proper 4K, bosh the other lens on and off you go. I know that you could have the One X2 and a second camera but I suppose if space is tight. Maybe I should try and create something, using only this camera? See how the theory works in practice.

    What wired mic do you recommend? The issues I always have is that once I am rolling along at speed with a loud exhaust, the audio gets blown out and crackly. I don't mind a quieter mic as I can boost the audio in post, but if the audio is blown out and distorted, then I can't fix it and the footage is ruined...
    I had GoPro 9 and 10 and both were unstable and horrible. The DJI Action 3 takes great video but the external mic situation sucked, as it doesn't work with wired mics in loud environments. You have to use their wireless mic setup which costs more than the camera, is very clunky and as I found out, not water proof...
    So I am back on the Insta360 One RS 4K with the $20 mic adapter, and just looking for a simple wired mic I can plug in, set my mic gain to lower the sound levels, and just go ride and vlog. I have the mic mounted inside the helmet with TWO foam wind socks on it.

      Battery life and heat management are both far superior on the Insta360. The One RS has so far NEVER overheated where the hero 8 overheats if I’m at a standstill and the temp is over 25°C. Hero 8 gets about 65 minutes of recording, one RS always gets over 90.

    Great video Andy. The quality of your video production just seems to get better and better… The thought that you’ve put in to covering all of the features and options and how they compare to each other while making maximum use of those features to make a great video is cool!… Two questions/comments on the cameras, is the sound from the built in mics as noticeably different as it seems. The One RS seemed somewhat muffled to me, is that something to do with the wind noise reduction??… For the flexibility of the interchangeable lenses the Insta seems to be the no-brainer choice but is the 1-inch lens is also worthwhile straight away or something to maybe add later?? Cheers Si

    • @AndyManCam
      @AndyManCam  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks very much Si! This one quickly turned into a bit of a mammoth project!
      The audio is a bit of a swings and roundabouts affair. The RS is a Bit muffled compared to the gopro when there’s no wind. But the gopro quickly becomes noisy and unlistenable at speed whereas the RS managed to still eke some useable sounds out of the wind roar. It could still be better, but to be honest it’s an utterly impossible task to avoid the wind on a bike. In any case it’s definitely better than that of the One X2. Sadly i couldn’t test against the current gopro, but i know there are a few comparison vids out there already 👍🏻. With regards to the 1 inch lens, I’d say wait and see how you get on with the 4K boost lens. The 1 inch lens is a bit bulkier and has a relatively large minimum focus distance. So if the 4k boost lens with its 1/2“ sensor and considerably higher pixel count do a job you’re happy with, then you can invest the dosh in spare batteries and biscuits instead!!

    Great review Andy, I use my Insta360 One R quite a lot on my dirty bike, is a great camera, I am not sure this is enough of an improvement for me to spend my hard earned on though, especially as I don't really need the single lens mod. I am very excited for the One X3 if it can improve on image quality though.

    • @AndyManCam
      @AndyManCam  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks very much P! Yeah i totally get that. If the old model is doing the trick, why change a working formula!? I was still using hero 6‘s when the the H9 came out! I guess they’re just trying to lessen the gap between them and the gopros to get more into the ecosystem. Improved 360 quality has to be the next logical step. I’m hoping that if CX and when the X3 comes along, the exact same lens will find it’s way into the Modular system too and make the most of that newer processor. We can but wait and see!

    • @AndyManCam
      @AndyManCam  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hard for me to say, as i don’t have a Hero 9 to compare. I would say that the two are very different though and it depends on what you’ll use more. As a pure action cam, although the One RS is very good, the Gopro has the edge on field of view and slow-mo. But if you’ll want some 360 capability, the Insta360 wins have down and gives almost infinitely more possibility and flexibility!

  • @bernhtp
    @bernhtp 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Excellent and informative review. Thanks for covering audio, specifically the audio adapter and in-helmet audio. Everyone has good video and stabilization these days, but simple audio in the noisy moto environment with helmet mounts remains vexing.
    The RS may be promising here. The minimalist adapter, while not as convenient as a built-in 3.5mm jack (e.g., in the old Sony FDR-X3000),, is still way better than anything GoPro. I have the Hero 9 with the Media Mod, but this is incompetently designed given its bulk and the necessity to dismount and disassemble it to replace the battery. I would have preferred Insta360 not to require a mounting bracket - provide built-in mounting fingers or screw hole - but this one is not as bad as most.
    I'm not sure why you used the crappy helmet mount provided by Insta360 that leaves a gap in the faceshield. Audio is hard enough without another wind leak. I need to install my chin curtain and close the lower vent to get anything decent on my Shoei X-14. I would love to hear the result in a more pristine helmet environment.
    I have the X2 for 360 video. Note that for mounting on most bikes, it is important to use the Insta360 Vibration Damper, otherwise the innards of the camera ultimately shake apart and you are left with nothing. This video has mostly 360 video from the X2. th-cam.com/video/H_kKVr0KR0c/w-d-xo.html

    • @AndyManCam
      @AndyManCam  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks very much! I agree that the Gopro system is far from perfect. Sadly i had to use the Insta chin mount because there’s no easy way to put a fixed mount on my flip front helmet. Not in time for the review at least! Cageless mounting is possible with the boosted battery, but the camera is no longer waterproof then.

    • @bernhtp
      @bernhtp 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@AndyManCam Thanks. Does the Boosted Battery have mounting fingers or screw? I don't care about waterproof. I try not to ride in the rain, and when I'm caught, I would quickly put away the camera if necessary. No one wants to look at rainy lens video anyway.

    • @AndyManCam
      @AndyManCam  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My pleasure! Yes the boosted battery has built in mounting fingers, like the latest gopros. It’s also about twice the capacity of the old One R battery and air 50% bigger than the One RS battery.

    • @bernhtp
      @bernhtp 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@AndyManCam Great. So there's no need for the cage for mounting? Does it all hold together securely otherwise?
      You can tell I like a minimalist approach. My ideal camera would be something like the form factor of the GoPro Session (or DJI Action 2) with a snap-on battery on the bottom or back. 3.5mm audio, good AGC, built-in fingers, no screens. Most of what vloggers want for walking around town with their arms extended is wasted in a helmet mount. Then there's audio.

    • @AndyManCam
      @AndyManCam  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I totally agree. I had hoped that the next new thing from insta would be a cross between the one R and the Go2. Sadly the motorvlogging market is still very small for the camera manufacturers so we’re stuck with some compromises. I’m afraid i can’t personally say how securely the boosted battery holds together as I’ve never used one. But there are motovloggers out there who have used it. Just have a little search on the tubes 👍🏻

    Nice work with the review. I'm a massive Insta fan owned two 360 one X2s. For me the reliability of the cameras and battery life far outweigh any technical advantage of the Gopro. What's the point of having great Gopro footage when often at key moments the camera freezes or files get corrupted and don't mention the rubbish battery life.
    On a recent motorcycle tour of Madeira, all the riding footage both 360 and 150 view is done via Insta, I think the footage is great (your welcome to check on my channel). A week of recording and was never let down by the cameras.

    • @AndyManCam
      @AndyManCam  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’m afraid i haven’t used a Gopro Max, but from what I’ve heard, the Insta is easier to use and there’s not much in it with the quality. The versatility of the One RS is certainly unbeatable. The action cam mode is really very good, although that depends on what’s most important. On FOV and higher framerates, the gopro hero’s have it beat.

    • @AndyManCam
      @AndyManCam  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I hear you! Drag on one side is a killer! I actually found this one quite alright! At first i imagined it would feel heavy compared to the gopro Hero 8. But once you add the mic adapter, there difference is pretty much unnoticeable. Versus the One R and any gopro from hero 7 and older, the rs was really easy to replace batteries and memory cards without having to move the camera. I even managed a battery change without even taking off the lid. When i had both the gopro and the Insta360 on the chin at the same time, THAT was too heavy!! 🤣
