Which is the BEST Motorcycle Action Camera? I Tried Them All...

  • I've been creating motorcycle video content for TH-cam and other online social media sites since 2017, and in that time I've used a lot of the leading motorcycle action cameras. In my search to find the best motorcycle action camera, I've used everything from the old school GoPro Hero 3 and 4, to the GoPro Hero 7, The GoPro Hero 9, Drift Ghost XL Pro, all the way to the DJI Osmo Action, DJI Osmo Action 2, and the Insta 360 One RS (both the 360 and the 4k version).
In this video, I'll talk about my personal experienced and struggles with all these action cameras for motorcycles, including the ongoing struggle to get good helmet audio while motovlogging. Which of these action cameras is best for motovlogging? What motorcycle helmet camera problems have I had? Let me walk you through everything you've tried and hopefully help you find the best motorcycle helmet cam for you.

@@GR1MKA1 meanwhile I switched my setup to an Osmo Action 3 and also did extensive testing to find the right microphone for my motovlog setup. I also have a video about it on my channel, but it's in German.
I found two solutions that worked very well with the Osmo Action 3:
      1. Samsung EO-IC100 Headset - this is actually a full headset with in ear speakers, but I simply cut them off and only kept the microphone in the little control unit. This is a very light wight solution. Directly with a USB-C plug into the camera, and the audio results are quite fine without any clipping for me. Especially considering the low price of it.
      2. WKWZY DX-M02 USB-C adapter that you can youse with 3.5mm TRS microphones. It's more expensive, but I can use the lavalier microphones I already head. As the adapter supports stereo, I can even use it with my dual vlog setup. And I also have no problems with clipping and can use the gain control in the Osmo Action 3.

I went through two cameras, could not get them to work reliably, kept freezing despite me following all the best practices for formatting. Worse, the customer service was terrible. I've had good experience with the GoPro customer service. I really liked the Insta when it worked but for me that turned out to be only a day or two each time I tried to use it. YES! The only person on YT that actually praises the product because it simply works!
Like, seriously, so many people are focusing on super high resolutions, 10 bit bazingas and other things when the fundaments, that are reliability, are lying down flat. Kudos to You Dork man for being real with it. If all of the buyers would be like that, the companies would actually focus on delivering a fully capable and working product!
I personally bought DJI action 3 and I love it. Very reliable but never had to test the external mics, so it's not an issue for me for now. Maybe the gain thing is something they can add in the future updates? Anyhow the camera doesn't freeze or corrupt like gopros infamously did in the past - 11 does not but it costs a little bit horrendous amount of money for what u are getting.

I have the Action 3. With either the DJI Wireless Mic or a USB-C External Mic attached, the db level on the camera itself is adjustable to minus 12db. You only have access to this gain adjustment when the external mic is plugged in so you might easily have missed it or it might have been a recent firmware upgrade. With the wonderful gain control on the DJI Wireless Mic, I leave the gain on the camera at 0db and do all the needed gain adjustment for moto vlogging on the Wireless Mic.

    • @derekmctavish
      @derekmctavish ปีที่แล้ว +2

Yup, was going to post the same. They added -12db gain adjustment in a relatively recent firmware update -- the same upgrade that introduced 10-bit colour depth. IMO this camera is nearly perfect.

    • @dnlgrhm
      @dnlgrhm ปีที่แล้ว +3

@@oscr_zen yes, on both my AGV tourmodular and my Neotec 2, I have magnets mounted to the inside of the chin bar and slightly to the right of my mouth. The magnet on the wireless mic clicks onto this magnet and even with the dead cat attached, I can’t tell it’s there. I have a video on my channel about my setup that shows this at 4:55.

    • @iainstewart371
      @iainstewart371 ปีที่แล้ว

@@oscr_zen, there is also a 3.5mm jack for a wired lave mic on the transmitters. I don't have a lot of room for even the small transmitter without removing foam. So you could easily clip the pack into your jacket and run the mic up to your helmet without much issue. Apparently some reviews have shown buzzing with some mics. There are a few good comparison reviews on TH-cam. I am opting for the Shure MVL but at $100CDN that is a pricey option, also on back order for many vendors. There are other cheaper options but make sure you test them before purchase or have a good return policy.

Gopro dont tell you this but you need to do a factory reset after every firmware update. You loose the resets but you can easily redo them.
The other thing to do is to do a full format of the sdcard, on a laptop or pc. Not the quick format but the full format that takes about 45mins. The format on the gopro leaves behind data that may have a conflict withe new firmware.

The footage that comes out of the camera is absolutely crisp and I use it in conjunction with the Mic adapter and the MOVO ACM400 microphone and the sound is almost perfect (if you don't lose your windbreaker muff, like I did after two rides). Great choice to go with the Insta360 One RS, I am planning to get myself some extra One RS cameras in the upcoming future to be able to mount them on several positions on the bikes and add some different viewpoints to my video with the same high quality footage.

This will now be my second camera (e.g. rider shots) as I just dropped a signature on the 360 one RS. Value for money, this is hands down the best choice, especially when you consider the ease of using a standard 3.5 mic pin. Not to mention the ability to add 360. Glad to hear you recommend the Insta360. I just bought the One RS w/4K lens and the mic adapter for my helmet cam last week. I originally got the Insta360 X3 because I have a GoPro Hero 6 I was going to use for the helmet. But when I finally dug it out of storage (always hated it because the thing would lock up and not record.) the batteries barely held a charge. Instead of buying new batteries and an audio interface, I went One RS. I'm keeping both Insta360s. One on the helmet to vlog with (just starting that) and the other for interesting angles without having to constantly remount and change angles. Worst case is I have a back up if something happens to one of them.

I use the Action 3 with a $20 volume control and it works great. Before that I used the Garmin Virb XE and it worked great as well but the factory cable that's needed to use an external mic is really large and bulky. Nice to hear the insta is working well. I'm interested in adding a secondary 360 camera later but what I would say about the Osmo action 3 setup that I use is that getting 2 tracks of audio separately is a gamechanger if anyone wants to up their sound game on motovlogs.
I use the DJI wireless mic set with the osmo action 3 and I get left and right channels from separate microphones that I can place where ever I may choose. This is the best way to get near flawless audio as I can also adjust the gain separately on both channels.
I ofcourse blend the channels together in post to get perfect stereo sound from each side.
Motorcycle sounds can be absolutely perfect but so can the helmet audio. Then there is slightly more to be done on the edit but not much after you get the levels right straight on the mics. Plus this way there is no need to sync audio between the channels as both are written in to the helmet camera video file directly.
Maybe I should make a video about this but historically these tech videos do not perform well on my channel...

I"ve had literally every GoPro cam except one....I also got an Insta360 X3 the first day it came out....and I use it now all the time. So easy, faster and gets the best footage asI can decide after recording, what I want to see... I love my 360 and it's my go to now for speed and ease and coverage.

IT's a bit hard to say but...I had it on...and record, pause, record, pause etc etc...and doing that it was like...easily an hour to almost an hour n half...so not totally sure. I added a simple USB plug in and didn't worry about it. @@HDFXSB645

This vid probably saved my a ton of money. I just want the camera to work!! Most excellent dismount as well in the short clip, your moves should be patented!

Nice video, I have all Osmo Action 3's myself, and I love mine. I am using the DJI mic set and recording my audio separately. That set does allow you to drop the gain both on the transmitter and on the receiver so I never had the gain issues you experienced since I never plugged a mic into the camera, but that's good to know about.
I'm definitely interested in the Insta 360 cams and with your recommendation now I have to try one out!

Looks like the Action 3's latest update includes a negative dB gain for external mics, precisely what we'd need: th-cam.com/video/XXqjH1fbWAM/w-d-xo.html
This is probably the camera I'm going to get, as the video quality appears better to me than the One RS, along with the same reliability (and cold performances).
      *Edit*
Mmm.. seems like the gain still does not seem to be fixing the clipping issues, but mic volume control might? I guess I'll take Ben's advice and consider the One RS harder..

Thanks for your inputs on cameras. Ive used Gopro 3,4,5,7,8 and 9 and have experienced issues with some more than others. For the most part they have been very good but those occasional shutoff issues can be frustrating. I think I may give the insta360 a shot for my next camera.

I have the original Osmo Action, Action 2 and the Action3. I’ve ridden with them all. They take great video.
I use the DJI mic and it records great.
I use the above on my Motorcycle and my road bike (bicycle) and it keeps the video very steady.

I'm not sure if anyone has mentioned this already, but the Action 3 has mic volume adjustment from -12 to +24. A firmware update came out in Nov or Dec 2022 that added this. Also, the external mic adapter is just a simple USB-c to TRS mini jack. Any of them will work, just don't try to use a TRRS jack.
I really wanted to go with the Action 3 but ended up returning 5 of them. They all had the soft focus issue; some worse than others. I ended up going with the GoPro 11 for $10 more. $340 (veteran disc) vs $330. I also bought the Media Mod for $55. So now I can take out the GoPro battery and run the camera on a small power bank and use an external mic at the same time. It's the only action cam that'll do this as far as I know. Most of them will do either one, but not both at the same time. I sure can't complain about the picture quality and it's running flawlessly so far as long as I don't leave the mounting fingers folded in. It was a good choice for my needs.
I looked at the Insta 360 as well. I guess I just had small worries about framing the shots, image stabilization and picture quality. Maybe if this review was out I woulda gone this way.

Great review. I'm still running my old Hero 7 Black and never had any issues with it other than little things about it that I'd like it to do like 4K with stabilization. I haven't done the mic thing yet as it is usually an annoying ongoing commentary as I have discussions with myself way too often inside my helmet and do my comments in post. I've been thinking about playing with a 360 camera and was not aware of the modular capability of the insta nor is 4k non 360 lens so thanks for sharing this, I might be picking one of these up soon based on your review.

  • @PhilTonic

I agree with a lot you've said and experienced the same problems. However I stopped using the One RS because the external mic gain control is not working as it should. It only reduces the overall volume instead of reducing the recording sensitivity, which would give you better dynamic range. It's such a shame that every action cam manufacturer messes up in one field or another. I would have gone for the Action 3 if it hadn't had the infamous focus issue. As of today I'm still on the Hero 7. It does have a bug that it doesn't like being shut off too early after having been turned on, but for the rest of the time it is working and the audio is best.

This video was so helpful thank you. I appreciate the cut the bs. I watched a lot of other videos that kept comparing footage, but I know that there are a lot of factors that affect that, like the way your monitor/phone screen is calibrated. I own all of DJIs action cameras. Action 1 is my ‘forget’ camera, set it up for timelapses and in places I won’t mind if I accidentally forget it. Action 2 is for quick chin POV angles, but also mounting places that are hard to fit a larger camera. Action 3 is kind of everything else on or off the bike that needs a wide FOV. I also use the Sony FDRx3000 for my helmet talking bits, has a 3.5mm jack for any mic, sound is good with a dead cat. It also has lens stabilization so no digital cropping. Image quality is great

I was with Gopro since the beginning when I found one of their original ones on a trail (before even the wide angle lens). Since then I had the HD Hero, Hero2, Hero3+ black and Hero4 session.
The Session was my favorite by far until I installed the firmware upgrade. Now it required the app to change settings, which didn't work if I didn't have cell service. Shocker, most of my videos were FAR away from service. That put a bad taste in my mouth and I stopped buying gopros (and creating content) partly due to that as well as life getting in the way and TH-cam changes. Now that I've considered getting back into it, I see no reason to buy back into gopro.
Thank you for this video, it and many others are helping me make an informed decision in a market I haven't kept up with for quite some time.

Thanks for this video, I've been using GoPro since the original Hero VGA version, loved it because that was all we had. Also have a Hero 3 HD, never an issue but no screen to see what you're recording, just a blinking light and no image stabilization, but still ok. a few years ago my daughter bought me my first "4K" in the Dragon 3 off of Amazon, worry free recording with a slight bit of image stabilization and a back screen to see you are recording, never an issue. Bought the GoPro Hero 10 Black and it has been the worst $400 ever spent! Great video and great stabilization quality but it shuts off randomly, 5 minutes into recording or at 65% battery (low battery), overheats in sub zero weather? Like Bud Light, never a GoPro ever again!!
Just used your links and bought the 360 RS on Spring Special and the mic adapter off of Amazon. Thank you!!

There were no surprises for me based on what I've heard from many motorcycle content creators, but I still enjoyed the video. Thanks. I have a GoPro 7 and have used it very little. I download and reformat the cards in an effort to prevent data corruption issues. I also buy the recommended cards with ample data transfer speed, but I suspect the minor overheating problems I've had are but a harbinger of inevitable Hero failure to come.
I've been thinking about an Insta360 even though the fish eye 360 degree gimmick doesn't appeal to me and is about played out on TH-cam. I was reluctant because the file format is proprietary and their video editing software doesn't run under Linux, but apparently their Android video editing app is pretty good.

Great video; I really appreciate the concise and direct commentary. If voice over with a mic inside the helmet ( so no commentary on the video), and I was only trying to make vids of my rides to edit and share with a few friends, would you still stay with the Insta 360 or would one of the others be a more logical, or equal choice? Thanks again.

  • @kplatagaw

You gotta try the Insta360 Go 2 as your helmet cam. I use it more as my helmet cam than the One RS (which i usually mount it on a stick on my bike). The controlled recording duration is heaven sent. I set mine at 30s recording only per press on Go 2, and i could selectively shoot only good scenes without having bulky video file in 1 go. The main disadvantage for Go 2 is that you can't really talk while on the go. Only built-in mic.

Awesome content Ben, and thanks so much for sharing. GoPro IMHO have really lost the plot in the last couple of years, it seems to me they are all about maximising profit rather than make a solid travel cam. I have the Hero 8, and while I love the timelapse functions and other features, it overheats regularly and cooks batteries! I am thinking seriously about switching my whole ensemble to DJI instead of GoPro - after all they make awesome drones, market leading in fact. But after watching this video, I think I will check out the Insta range as well. So thanks Ben, for some great content on a hugely contentious topic! Experience rules!

I've been using a Hero 7 with a Ulanzi mic adapter and thankfully even after filming over 60 episodes on my most recent bike adventure, haven't had the issues that others complain about. I'm still getting decent quality and stabilization. It's never crashed on me either. It will get hot if you put it in your pocket and battery life isn't huge. I'd like to eventually get the insta360RS but man, it's like a thousand bucks to get one of those to my door.

I found a camera which is specifically designed to be used with all kinds of helmets (motorbike, horse riding, bicycle) The Techalogic DC1. Its one of those barrel tube cameras, but it has 1 big difference.. It has 2 cameras built into it, one for forwards, one for backwards. It records both cameras in 1080p and as separate files, so you get video files for the front cam and videos files for the rear cam. It only has a pinhole microphone built into the camera, so i use one of those cheap digital audio recorders used for taking dictation. And run a little clip on mic to the inside of my helmet. Works like a charm. I get to record everything around me and i get to talk to the people in youtube land.

Perfect timing! I just got back into riding and bought a '22 CB500x, and been trying to get decent footage from my GoPro Hero 7. The Time-lapse is terrible and on video mode the audio is just as bad, or worse with all the noise. I heard you say in one of your recent videos that you didn't like GoPro time-lapse for some reason, but it seems that the lack of adjustability is probably the largest reason. It's so choppy it's terrible. Love your content and man, do these videos make me miss the PNW!

4:10 And I thought someone had yer junk in a vice.😎
I have foam socks on my Hero 6 Blacks, to capture engine noise or conversations when stopped, but use my Sena's for narration using a spare 20S EVO connected to a Sony digital recorder. That gets anyone on the intercom and does a fair job on narration.
I have three of those GoPro audio adapters I will sell you. Junk AND they wreck the GoPro waterproofness.
I use a waterproof cable and a battery pack in my chest pocket to power my Hero 6 Blacks, without a GoPro internal battery. With 400GB SD, I can record 12hr of 2.7K non-stop. And, in editing, ignore the crap audio as well, cause I got it on the Sony via Sena
I'm dying to afford an Insta360 x3, but I doubt I will change audio from the spare Sena 20s EVO set-up that I now use. It works.
