    I think it's maybe easy to forget that in 1997 it was still a little unique for a video game boss track to even just like... have vocals? And nothing else in FF7 itself before this point has vocals either - it's just so effective at communicating that this moment is a big deal

      #suddenlyCDaudio. FF7 was that bridge, for me at least, where game music evolved from waveform-generating soundchips (think NES and GameBoy) to full orchestration and vocals. The FF7 soundtrack is still heavily grounded in synth, which sorta emulates the "simple" and "inorganic" noises made by a soundchip, but pairing amazingly with suddenly having real drums and vocals together with it.

      If the soundchip vocals in ff6 count then that

    • @sivadfa
      @sivadfa 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@BandedMetagrossMeteorMash FF6 (PS1) worked by emulating the SNES. What made One Winged Angel interesting on a technical level was everything, including the lyrics, was done under midi. The game as a whole has 3 sound fonts. One for pretty much every song in the game. And two just for this one song. It was for that reason that very few PCs could properly play the song back when the game came out for PC as having dedicated sound cards wasn't a common thing anymore. And the game required a specific Creative soundcard to sound right.

    • @sivadfa
      @sivadfa 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      (To clarify, FF6's vocals were what music trackers call "Choir Aaa" which was actually a fairly commonly used for different things)

    One of the things I've noticed in modern versions of older game songs is there's always something that gets drowned out by new sounds and instruments. When you go back and listen to them in their original form, you notice things that can be easily missed in the newer versions.

    • @trevorveillette8415
      @trevorveillette8415 2 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      This is usually because of 2 things. Either there's so much going on, that there's too much going on and you can't hear each individual instrument type. Or 1 or multiple types of instruments are being played way too loud over the rest and it just drowns out what else is being played, and 100% of the time it's either the brass, violins/string instruments, or a very loud choir.
      I'm a little lucky that violins and choir are in my top 3 components in orchestras though. So not too bad for me.

    • @KitsyX
      @KitsyX 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Part of it is also that sometimes the synth sounds are also more distinct... That and sometimes there are limited channels in older stuff... It's kinda the difference between a wall of sound and a solo instrument... Listen to a rock band and an orchestra and you'll probably have an easier time hearing the individual instruments in the band.

    • @AgentRedShirt
      @AgentRedShirt 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@KitsyX This is what I was about to say. Back in the day there was a limited number of channels for audio. Somewhere better than others and some just used cd audio. But the actual onboard sound processor of the PlayStation while it was very good was severely limited compared to what we have now. So now where you have full ranges of maybe several different parts playing something, back in the day you had to settle for a single tone.
      That being said though. In 1997? This was the shit.

    • @thenonexistinghero

      I haven't heard much of the FF7R soundtrack... mainly because I feel like the game's nothing but a major disrespect to the original and have no intention of ever playing it. But I do agree that the modernized versions or modern takes on songs tend to have some elements missing or drowned out that made the original so good. Heck, for Xenoblade 1 I prefer the original tracks the grand majority of the time. The new ones sound polished and soft in comparison. They are missing the superb rough edges that made the original's soundtrack a masterpiece.
      I do think there's a decent amount of people who make fan remixes that do an excellent job respecting the original material though. Prancing Dad is mindblowingly good, for example (and it even throws in some One Winged Angel for good measure).

    • @WhiteHawk77
      @WhiteHawk77 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yep, that’s the main thing I have against the Remake soundtrack, which I still think is great but the main theme, the main hook of the tracks is diminished by the complexity of the real or more real instruments used and perhaps the levels chosen for them.

  • @internetjesus
    @internetjesus 2 ปีที่แล้ว +150

    Just think about it in context. In the entirety of the OG FFVII, you’ve only heard MIDIs. You understand because of the tech at the time.
    And then at the very end of the game, on the final boss…vocal samples. The game was leading up to this moment using Sephiroth’s theme as a leitmotif. And then Uematsu hits you with the leitmotif as the only vocal sample in the entire game.

  • @Mrinsecure

    One Winged Angel is apocalyptic. That's really the only way to encapsulate the way the song makes me feel. There's grandeur, and yet madness and terror as well - all while you're literally grappling with a god for the fate of a planet.
    I'm not sure how they could've topped JENOVA Absolute AND Birth of a God, but man, when I first got to this boss sequence, I really felt that immense weight, the stakes of the story beat were explained perfectly in the music. It's an incredible piece, and while I understand that it may not be everyone's favorite FF track, I have to believe it's the absolute best. If it's not in people's top 5 Nobuo tracks, I don't know what they're smoking. XD

    I wasn't even born when this game came out originally, so I can only imagine how insane it felt back _then_ to hear an actual full-on choir performance come in in the middle of this crazy final boss sequence, back in the days when live performances within video game soundtracks were really uncommon. Imagine its 1997 and just simply having vocals in your game is already absolutely ground breaking and then Sephiroth uses a move on you called ''Supernova''. You watch as a meteor reaches fuck-off levels of speed, crossing galaxies in seconds. Then you watch as planets are getting turned into rubble, and now it hits you that this planet destroyer is headed straight for you. You watch helplessly as the sun engulfs the entire Solar System, *OUR* Solar System, while Sephiroth does not give a single fuck as the majestic chanting at 4:20 hits. And this entire madness is happening infront of you in an age where people were still relying on dial-up connection to use the phone.

    This is why as much as I like the AC version, it over-does the guitar and it feels more action packed (to fit the animation) rather than this which always feels in control. Like Sephiroth always being in control, and you're fighting this oppression.
    I find other versions really don't give the quiet downtimes in the transitions which I really like. Oh, and having played this not long after it came out as a kid. I bricked it when I heard this after already fighting boss-level enemies and a couple of bosses.
    Speaking of that, they got me with that in FF8 as well.

    So for me, this game was not only my first Final Fantasy experience in 1997 at the age of 9 but it was my first RPG experience. By the time I got the final fight against Sephiroth the game had already cemented itself in my young mind, completely shattering my ideas and preconceptions my young mind held about WHAT makes a video game great. Then I got to that fight and heard One Winged Angel for the first time! The orchestral instrumental coupled with the angry latin chanting before hearing "SEPHIROTH!" and the fight itself mixed together was just so perfect! That experience has impacted me greatly, not just from a musical perspective either, that was probably the first time in my young life that I truly fell in love with a story itself. Overall it was just completely mind blowing to me and life changing in the end, there is no other way to describe the impact this game and it's music had upon myself and many others.

    for perspective of how epic this was, you fight your way past the strongest enemies in the game to the center of the planet, you find Sephiroth who has basically doomed the world has sealed the one thing that can save it... he turns into a HUGE 100ft godlike mutant version of himself, you beat him... then this music begins and he descends in an almost angelic form for a second round... then during THAT fight he does an attack that destroys the solar system over a nearly 2 minute animation.

    • @vapormermaid
      @vapormermaid ปีที่แล้ว

      That attack is also incredibly consistent with the game's themes, too. He basically attacks you with a vision of the entire solar system slowly being destroyed in just the precise order so that Earth is destroyed last while your party is helpless to do anything about it.

    Honestly I think what really works so well in this particular version of the song - you know, the original - is how much it calls back to the musical styles of Shinra itself, but with the creepy vocals and then the strings layered in to let you know that what you're fighting is a true terror, something that MUST be stopped. The percussion are actually the biggest link back to Shinra for me with the marching scene in Junon. It works so well for me.

    You know what just hit me? Whenever I watch a youtube video I'm reacting to a past event that no longer exists. The moment Jesse recorded this video is lost to time, captured only by way of technology. Jesse now is no longer who he was then. What I'm saying may sound obvious, but people like me are so used to just watching youtube videos that when I consciously thought about it, it blew my mind. I was just sitting in my room reacting to this man's video, having a faux conversation as if he could hear me, but the Jesse I was talking to doesn't exist anymore. I was talking to an illusion of a moment lost in time. Imagine watching videos of youtubers that have passed away. You can kind of interact with them as though nothing had really happened, as if you could just comment and get a reply from them.
    Wow.

    Awww man, I missed this part of the livestream. Yes, this completely blew my mind back in 1997. I was 12 and I can safely say this game changed my mind. As for the Remake version... well I think I mentioned this before but the thing is, there is another theme mixed in with that one (The arbiters of fate or whispers). I think the new element (the arbiters) kinda dilutes the song AND the plot. Not gonna get too much into it since you seem to wanna play this game at some point.

    • @shimik11
      @shimik11 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      SPOILERS:
      it doesnt dilute the plot because its a new timeline different from the original. The arbiters are basically guardians of time trying to make things go the same way they did in the original FF7 and Sephiroth in the Remake is the same one from the original, trying to prevent his death from happening and the arbiters try to stop him but fail which is why Zack survives the events of Crisis Core. The "Remake" in the title is literally Sephiroth trying to remake the events of the original in his own way. There are a bunch of videos explaining this on youtube, it makes you appreciate the story way more imo.

    • @ocram3333

      @@shimik11 SPOILERS:
      This is exactly my problem with remake, it goes completely against the spirit of what a remake is supposed to do (and no, I'm not against all other expansions to the game like Honeybee in or Jessie mision and others). No one, not even the people who are fine with the new direction wanted this. No one bought this game saying "oh god... oh gee, I really hope I get an AU/ stealth sequel/ requel" or whatever it ends up being. Calling this game a remake only to play with the semantics of that word was very dishonest. It is just fortuitous that most people are fine with it (are they though? people seem to be looking forward to very different outcomes on very different and irreconcilable paths). As someone who thought the fanbase was pretty focused on what they wanted (you know, an actual remake) the reaction of 80-90% of the fanbase seems insane to me.

      @@siic I am for sure in the minority, as illustrated by the FFunion survey, but that's not gonna stop me from voicing my opinion.
      Spoilers:
      I will say, however, that of the people who are fine with the new direction there's many different camps with mutually exclusive expectations. There's the people who don't think the whispers and Zack stuff matters much and we are still getting basically the same story. Then there's those who think we are just getting a parallel story with Zack (many different versions of this, including a "sixth sense" kind of twist). And then there's the people who do want something completely different (Also a spectrum) like, "Zack comes back as a playable character and saves Aerith at the last moment, then Zack, Cloud and good Sephiroth kill evil Sephiroth and Genesis fusion with a blade made of lifestream" type of stuff. As cringe as that sounds, there's plenty of people on that kind of camp (as I said, very wide spectrum there).
      Now, that was a very rough simplification of the camps of people "fine" with what remake is doing but it serves to illustrate my point: those 3 expectations are mutually exclusive. No matter what remake ends up doing, it will disappoint 2/3rds of its audience or so*. So i'm in the miniority, yes, for now...
      *obviously making a lot of assumtions here, like every faction is about the same size and ignoring some overlap within the factions, but it's not like I'm going to do some statistical analysis for a youtube comment.

    The advent Children version is definitely different to the version in the video(game), Advent Children definitely had a rock/metal vibe to it and that’s what Uematsu the composer of One Winged Angel wanted to do with it, he wanted to really morph it and make it better and he really did that but both versions are absolutely incredible and I love both versions. Also an interesting fact all the lyrics are in Latin, I can’t remember the translations of the lyrics but it’s really dark but I do know Sephiroth translated from Latin to English is Satan, so it brings a whole new darkness to the villain and this theme itself
