Oh wow….Sephiroth was actually a person with a heart that got broken and shattered into a billion pieces all while dealing with the existential terror that he was “special” in the sense that he’s a monster.
It's worse than that. Sephiroth was raised in the isolation of the lab, and then finally got two friends, Angeal and Genesis, when he basically became a child soldier. Then Genesis betrays them all and runs off, and seemingly gets killed. Just as Sephiroth kind of got over that and forged some friendship with Angeal's student Zack, Angeal runs off to join not-actually-dead Genesis and now Sephiroth and Zack are ordered to kill Angeal and Genesis. Sephiroth actually disobeys orders several times, specifically tells Zack "ok, we'll catch up and then fail to eliminate them, and hopefully your puppy eyes can convince them to come back since I couldn't", then, when it fails, lets Zack to go back to Aerith to mourn Angeal's death, while mourning in solitude himself, and then, when he barely got over it and was already on the verge of defecting from Shinra because of how awful Shinra was being, he gets sent to Nibelheim. So yeah, his whole life he wanted to be a normal human being and have friends. Then said friends kept leaving and betraying him, and he found out he's been a monster all along.

In my eyes, he was never a monster. The greatest monsters here were professor Hojo and Jenova. Sephiroth was a human with infused Jenova cells. Sephiroth was alone and abandoned, this is why he easily submitted his will to Jenova.
I feel like, from Genesis's perspective, this is probably how it all went down in his head: Genesis: "Maybe if I tell Sephiroth the brutal truth about his origins, he will lose all loyalty to Shinra after seeing what they did to make him and help save my life so we can save the planet from Shinra together." Genesis: *Tells Sephiroth the brutal truth about his origins* Sephiroth: *goes insane, kills everyone, does not help save Genesis's life, and dedicates himself to destroying the planet quicker and more efficiently than Shinra ever did* Genesis: "...shit."
When Genesis says, ‘First class SOLDIER Sephiroth!’ Sephiroth sort of snaps to attention. It’s like he was yelled at like that when someone was chastising him or wanted to make sure they had his attention.
From scenes like this I feel like FF7 won't be complete until Sephiroth knows the truth about Lucrecia. The true villain of the saga has always been Hojo. He was behind every catharsis and was the real cause of all the pain of almost all the characters involved in the story. I have always felt that behind Sephiroth's actions and his madness was Jenova herself. That's why I think he deserves redemption and maybe close the story by dying to be reunited with his real mother in the lifestream. I think it would be a beautiful closure that would make us all cry and smile.
Yes, he was the greatest victim of the story. Hojo was the ultimate villain in this story as well as Shin-Ra corporation which allowed all of this nonsense. He was abandoned and alone and there was nobody next to him, this is why Jenova has taken the advantage of that.
it's so cruel. sephiroth was always there for his friends and was willing to fail the mission to save Angeal and Genesis. And Genesis? "You're a monster. you're mother is a monster and i want that you help me like you always did" I'm glad that sephiroth didn't help him. Sephiroth would help Genesis if he would be still a good friend. Sephiroth suffered and the Genesis didn't care. he wasn't there for him, when Sephiroth needed someone.

Genesis mistakes fiction with reality, he believes his favorite book is reality and he thinks he and his friends are characters fromthat book. This idea subconsciously reached Sephiroth (Sephiroth said the book is on his mind because Genesis recites it a lot). Also, Genesis envies Sephiroth. Part of Genesis is glad that Sephiroth "has cheated" and is not perfect. Also, Sephiroth is a normal human (who was used as guinea pig), the fact that Genesis says the alien is Sephiroth's mother means 1 of 3 things: a) Genesis doesn't know about Biology b) Genesis didn't understand the documents he has read. c) Genesis is consciously lying because he wants to hurt Sephiroth (maybe he thinks it's like giving Sephiroth a fatal blow with a sword). In addition, Angeal is more empathic and emotionally more intelligent. He knew the information would mess with Sephiroth's mind. Angeal knows Sephiroth has personal issues (a father that doesn't give him love and doesn't give him information about who he is, an abscent mother, etc). Angeal knows Sephiroth's identity and Sephiroth's mother are important issues for Sephiroth.

@@mohabalserafe3795 Basically, Genesis thought Sephiroth was a good person even though everyone there was Shinra's guinea pigs. He thought Sephiroth would help him since he isn't really a "Perfect Monster", just a lab experiment. However, at the end of the clip, Genesis throws some criticism on Sephiroth because he was more worried about his ego than helping Genesis and others. That's why Genesis ends by saying "I see. Perfect Monster, Indeed.".

I have a feeling that Jenova cells played part in Sephiroth downfall. They always influenced him in some way. However, when he was composed he could control it but when he lost it Jenova cells deteriorated his mind even further and transformed him into something he wasn't. There must be reason why he is so attached to Jenova, despite her being nothing more than mutated corpse.

A bit of a long post but bare with me: Back at the Mansion (in the original FF7 game) after Sephiroth discovered the truth from the Mako reactor, he picked up the false info from Dr Gast's research papers, implying that Jenova was one of the Ancient (Cetras) of the past. (Jenova is an Alien parasite and does what parasite does best, eat the host inside-out and move on to the next host; like rabies but on a massive scale, like planet size scale.) Sephiroth confused his mother (by the way, he has 2 mothers, but I'm not going to spoil that tibit) to be both, an Ancient and a deity from outer space. Sephiroth went mad by fully embracing his superiority/God complex, (I blame his Dad for that since his Dad does think he is superior to everyone and anything..) thinking it was his right to rule earth and that it was his duty in bringing his people into the "promise land", essentially the same way his Mother Jenova did, not realizing he's following in his Alien Mother's footsteps.

This is correct, Jenova (the parasite that deteriorates all matter, living and everything, until there is nothing left), and Sephiroth's birth mother (Lucrecia), and Hojo (Sephiroth's Father). Regardless of what has been done. Regardless of how it starts. Sephiroth, would eventually become what he is later on in the story. Monster? No. Perfect Human with Monster and Jenova Cells? Plausible. Either way. Sephiroth, because of his mental state, became invested in learning about Jenova, as misinformation on her, the misinformation from Dr. Gast, because no one, not even him, knew better at the time, yet still, by the time Sephiroth was born, it was already too late to undo the research, or not undo it at all as they wanted a "Perfect Soldier", so just rolled with him being an "ancient" to soothe his mind. And still, here we are. Sephiroth's slow decent into pure utter madness because of his so called "Friend" who brought him the truth. He is, of course, rightfully pissed. As I too would be, if my life was considered a "lie" up to this point.
Actually, Genesis wasn't really calling Sephiroth a monster in a negative way. He was just referring to the fact that they all were hybrids between Jenova and Human. Sephiroth is the "Perfect Monster" because he can't degrade. That's why Genesis trolls him with "I see. Perfect Monster, Indeed." which means that Sephiroth is truly a monster now.
Genesis thought that a Sephiroth who had lost faith in his humanity, who had devolved into a monster, would become his ally. He vastly underestimated Sephiroth’s ego. Even when his pride was shattered, it just took on a new form.
People don't like that they did this and also ask why does Sephiroth go to the Library after this. Me? -Gongaga- I think that Sephiroth went to the Library to see if Genesis' words were true or not.
Y’know the scene where Sephiroth starts holding his head?? I always thought he got some random headache, or that the scene was added to be dramatic or something. bUT ACTUALLY 😎 after suffering from a few myself, I can fully confirm that the man was probably at the verge of a panic attack. He was probably trying really, REALLY hard to keep himself together, especially after seeing the name “Jenova” on the wall entrance and then seeing literal monsters in the tank made by mako overdose. But holding your head, pulling your hairs, covering your mouth, losing your balance from light-headedness-all those things usually happen before an attack starts. And it’s really sad 🥲 poor baby bwoy

A lot of people don't like Dirge of Cerberus, but if we take what Hojo said in that game, he literally made Sephiroth a threat to the planet so that Omega would awaken and that he could become a god by fusing with Omega. He knew about Omega before Sephiroth was even an idea, so he was always planning on using Omega from the start and probably saw JENOVA as a good test subject to produce horrifying threats to the planet in an attempt to awaken Omega and got lucky with Sephiroth.
Honestly, after seeing this scene last night, I didnt feel any hate or dislike the man that much. Practically, you can see he was having an intercal crisis. He look so scared and sad, I feel more bad for him than dislike or hate. Even more considering then Jenova gets in his brain and turns him into a monster. Though, all the shit through out Crisis Core first half didnt help either, like Genesis is in this scene. The way his briws furrowed, his eyes were down casted and shifting to one spot to the other and his lips turn down, his voice was shaky, I just wanted to give Sephiroth a hug then.
The facial expressions on Sephiroth are just... *chefs kiss* I always felt like something was missing in the original to help us connect with Sephiroth and his slow spiraling descent.
I'd be pretty upset too if someone told me something this crazy about what was supposed to be my mom, who in turn, never truly existed outside of Shinra's mad science projects and the extremely nosey ears of Midgar. See I felt the exact opposite. Newbern was an absolute beast in Advent Children, but to be honest I think Hoechlin does better in Crisis Core. Especially the “You will rot” line.

Newbern has a naturally deep voice and can sound naturally like an adult, and his monotone is better because you know that Sephiroth struggles with interactions and such. Sephiroth doesn't sound older than even the people who he is older than. Like Tifa and Cloud. Both sound deep and mature. Sephiroth? The only reason his voice is slightly "deep" is because he's repeating Newbern's lines in crisis core, tone and pauses and all. Rebirth when he is a hero will show his squeaker voice, and young Cloud will sound older than Sephiroth once again. You WILL be proven wrong. And I WILL be proven right. Hoechlin doesn't have a deep voice, he sucks, fire him.

People really don't realise that it's Jenova that's taken over Genesis, and is doing the EXACT SAME thing as to what it does to Cloud when using Sephiroth as its avatar.
Something i noticed even as a child about sephiroths descent into villainy is that is ultimatly fuelled by total unending despair. He's effectively spent the following decades screaming and smashing everything hes come into contact with like a someone whose just lost everything trashing their room. What were a effectively watching is a godlike being suffering histories longest breakdown.
Its still uncanny not hearing George Newberns voice coming out of Sephiroth. Of all the remake voices I think this is the one I'm still having a hard time adjusting too.
I struggle getting used to any of them, but Newbern's performance is just on another level. This scene is a perfect example... "You will rot..." hits so hard in the original. In this, it just reads like every other line.
I feel like this was the breaking point with Sephiroth when Genesis ruined his friendship with him (Also felt like that bridge fell ages ago!) And you can see Genesis is bonkers crazy here. I feel bad about Sephiroth here, while Sephiroth's actions are his own, it was Genesis that planted the seed here in him. Also for those who are wondering about why Cloud isn't here, he was outside keeping sure Tifa wouldn't get into the reactor, he had a mask on so you didn't see him, if that makes sense. I know it's confusing since cloud is here in the original game, but I reckon when Zack and Cloud had been in that mako tank, their memories kinda joined up but it wasn't complete or something like that. I hope that helps a bit.
genesis really tried to bring everything down with him. I wonder what they will do with him and Zack in the next ff7. idk what happened exactly but the remake told us that everything has been altered for some reason and I think we will have 2 different timelines, one with cloud and one with Zack.
It still feels iffy that all this was at Nibelheim, but none of it was in FF7 (I just tell myself Cloud couldnt remember this stuff or was just in another room and just happened to miss everything.)
I mean, if you actually think about it, Cloud was in fact somewhere else at this time, so he couldn't have known about Genesis telling Sephiroth about his origins. And, possibly, the notion that Sephiroth thought himself a Cetra may have been an assumption on Cloud's part; a fact that's alluded to in the original FF7 when Sephiroth explicitly refers to Jenova as The Calamity from The Skies when he and Cloud meet each other again in Nibelheim.
That's why he keeps chasing cloud every time. He thinks they are the same. Cloud should live like him instead of being happy. Maybe he is a little jealous of cloud and doesn't want him to be happy.
Honestly, Genesis is the biggest clown of FF7 to me. He had a slam dunk opportunity to recruit arguably the most powerful person in the world at that point and used the opportunity to belittle him instead. It makes sense with his character completely, Genesis always felt inadequate compared to Sephiroth, so he couldn't resist holding the truth about his creation over him and rubbing in the painful truth, but pride always comes before the fall.

I know this conversation has been had constantly, but even with the voice acting in this game being hit and miss, I can’t help but love Tyler Hoechlin’s portrayal of Sephiroth. I adore George Newbern’s version, don’t get me wrong, but I think Hoechlin does a much better job of capturing that feeling of brokenness and the realization that everything Sephy thought he knew was a complete lie. I think my point can be emphasized with the “Traitor” voiceline during the boss fight. When Newbern says it, you can hear the coldness and the barely contained anger in his voice, but Hoechlin’s version sounds broken and unhinged, which I think better represents Sephiroth’s character. Keep in mind that this is entirely subjective, and while I enjoy Newbern’s portrayal, I think Hoechlin did a phenomenal job of capturing that emotion.

I always liked Genesis, always will. People call him monster, he just started a rebellion against real monsters - those who put him in a tube and messed with his genes, and hunted him for it. This is one so realistic game and story

I wonder how history would have changed, had Zack opened that coffin he found, and woke the sleeping guy inside up. Outside of Hojo, that sleeping guy inside is the only one who could tell Sephiroth about his real mother. Hojo knew what he was doing when he said Jenova. He completely erased Lucrecia from the conversation. Any mention of her was probably also purged from the Manor. Best get it from that sleeping boio in the coffin, then.

Sephiroth's voice is also meh. He was way better in the original. Genesis and Angeal try to sound as close as possible to the original so their performance are solid.

This scene solidified Genesis as a top 3 character in Crisis Core for me. Not that he wasn't already awesome but his approach here was just 10/10 on point

3:12 This new VA for seph didn’t do him justice. OG George Newbern absolutely SLAYS it as seph, the new VA in reunion doesn’t convey seph with the right tone & emotion. This scene here and the “you will rot” the way George does it, he says it with such contempt & conviction. The moment where he loses his humanity for the first time & becomes the villain we all know, was portrayed so well in OG through his voice. It was so flat & monotone in reunion.
So if he heard this prior to nibelheim incident, why would he go mad there and kill everyone after locking himself in the mansion, maybe that's the timeline split,.Genesis.
I would have laughed so hard if one of those static things happened in the Rebirth flashback and you got a few frames of Genesis. Would have laughed, and then been very sad. Really happy Rebirth handled the flashback almost perfectly
Sephiroth to me is the most tragic final boss in Final Fantasy History. He's a former war hero that was manipulated into becoming a harbinger of death by an alien parasite thanks to a fucked up experiment by Hojo. He was tricked into killing his actual friends and family all because Shinra fucked him over. He's not even the one that killed Aerith.
Nope, that's what hurts me the most. If he knew he had another biological mom that still existed, and that she still cared for him, Sephiroth would've been a completely different person growing up. But to be fair, it was all her fault to begin with. She had a guilty conscience over what happened to Vincent's Dad and couldn't 'cope', then she went and started a relationship with Hojo* thinking it was for the best (it was not for the best...) after Vincent discovered that Lucretia was part of the research team that was with his Dad looking for the Chaos materia, where he died, ended up screwing both Vincent's and Lucretia's futures permanently. She was too hard-headed to be reasoned with. She couldn't accept that Vincent was ok with his Fathers' death.
Poor Sephiroth. I cried during this! 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭I NEVER liked Genesis. Reunion was actually the first Final Fantasy VII video game I ever played. The Switch version was the most amazing Christmas gift ever! Right now I'm on Chapter 5 and the Genesis boss fight is so annoying. I have died way too many times than I can recall. The BOSS FIGHT with Genesis in Chapter 5: Where Are You? is ridiculous.

Just as Sephiroth kind of got over that and forged some friendship with Angeal's student Zack, Angeal runs off to join not-actually-dead Genesis and now Sephiroth and Zack are ordered to kill Angeal and Genesis. Sephiroth actually disobeys orders several times, specifically tells Zack "ok, we'll catch up and then fail to eliminate them, and hopefully your puppy eyes can convince them to come back since I couldn't", then, when it fails, lets Zack to go back to Aerith to mourn Angeal's death, while mourning in solitude himself, and then, when he barely got over it and was already on the verge of defecting from Shinra because of how awful Shinra was being, he gets sent to Nibelheim. So yeah, his whole life he wanted to be a normal human being and have friends. Then said friends kept leaving and betraying him, and he found out he's been a monster all along.

When Genesis says, ‘First class SOLDIER Sephiroth!’ Sephiroth sort of snaps to attention. It’s like he was yelled at like that when someone was chastising him or wanted to make sure they had his attention.
From scenes like this I feel like FF7 won't be complete until Sephiroth knows the truth about Lucrecia. The true villain of the saga has always been Hojo. He was behind every catharsis and was the real cause of all the pain of almost all the characters involved in the story. I have always felt that behind Sephiroth's actions and his madness was Jenova herself. That's why I think he deserves redemption and maybe close the story by dying to be reunited with his real mother in the lifestream. I think it would be a beautiful closure that would make us all cry and smile.
This has been a dream of mine since beating the game so long ago and I was so disappointed with Dirge of Cerberus.

Yes, he was the greatest victim of the story. Hojo was the ultimate villain in this story as well as Shin-Ra corporation which allowed all of this nonsense. He was abandoned and alone and there was nobody next to him, this is why Jenova has taken the advantage of that.

He thought Sephiroth would help him since he isn't really a "Perfect Monster", just a lab experiment. However, at the end of the clip, Genesis throws some criticism on Sephiroth because he was more worried about his ego than helping Genesis and others. That's why Genesis ends by saying "I see. Perfect Monster, Indeed.".

Back at the Mansion (in the original FF7 game) after Sephiroth discovered the truth from the Mako reactor, he picked up the false info from Dr Gast's research papers, implying that Jenova was one of the Ancient (Cetras) of the past. (Jenova is an Alien parasite and does what parasite does best, eat the host inside-out and move on to the next host; like rabies but on a massive scale, like planet size scale.)
Sephiroth confused his mother (by the way, he has 2 mothers, but I'm not going to spoil that tibit) to be both, an Ancient and a deity from outer space.

Actually, Genesis wasn't really calling Sephiroth a monster in a negative way. He was just referring to the fact that they all were hybrids between Jenova and Human. A lot of people don't like Dirge of Cerberus, but if we take what Hojo said in that game, he literally made Sephiroth a threat to the planet so that Omega would awaken and that he could become a god by fusing with Omega. He knew about Omega before Sephiroth was even an idea, so he was always planning on using Omega from the start and probably saw JENOVA as a good test subject to produce horrifying threats to the planet in an attempt to awaken Omega and got lucky with Sephiroth.

Honestly, after seeing this scene last night, I didnt feel any hate or dislike the man that much. Practically, you can see he was having an intercal crisis. He look so scared and sad, I feel more bad for him than dislike or hate. Even more considering then Jenova gets in his brain and turns him into a monster. Crisis Core was the perfect example of when something isn’t broke don’t fix it.
I feel like this was the breaking point with Sephiroth when Genesis ruined his friendship with him (Also felt like that bridge fell ages ago!) And you can see Genesis is bonkers crazy here. I feel bad about Sephiroth here, while Sephiroth's actions are his own, it was Genesis that planted the seed here in him.
Also for those who are wondering about why Cloud isn't here, he was outside keeping sure Tifa wouldn't get into the reactor, he had a mask on so you didn't see him, if that makes sense. I know it's confusing since cloud is here in the original game, but I reckon when Zack and Cloud had been in that mako tank, their memories kinda joined up but it wasn't complete or something like that. I hope that helps a bit.

Honestly, Genesis is the biggest clown of FF7 to me. He had a slam dunk opportunity to recruit arguably the most powerful person in the world at that point and used the opportunity to belittle him instead. It makes sense with his character completely, Genesis always felt inadequate compared to Sephiroth, so he couldn't resist holding the truth about his creation over him and rubbing in the painful truth, but pride always comes before the fall.

I know this conversation has been had constantly, but even with the voice acting in this game being hit and miss, I can’t help but love Tyler Hoechlin’s portrayal of Sephiroth. I adore George Newbern’s version, don’t get me wrong, but I think Hoechlin does a much better job of capturing that feeling of brokenness and the realization that everything Sephy thought he knew was a complete lie. I think my point can be emphasized with the “Traitor” voiceline during the boss fight. When Newbern says it, you can hear the coldness and the barely contained anger in his voice, but Hoechlin’s version sounds broken and unhinged, which I think better represents Sephiroth’s character. Keep in mind that this is entirely subjective, and while I enjoy Newbern’s portrayal, I think Hoechlin did a phenomenal job of capturing that emotion.

I always liked Genesis, always will. People call him monster, he just started a rebellion against real monsters - those who put him in a tube and messed with his genes, and hunted him for it. This is one so realistic game and story

Three friends entered in battle, one was captured, one escaped, the last one became a hero. Genesis is the last man standing from the three friends. He never died, actually. So because Sephiroth is oh so hot, his crimes are forgiven, but Genesis is a jerk? You are pathetic!

I wonder how history would have changed, had Zack opened that coffin he found, and woke the sleeping guy inside up. Outside of Hojo, that sleeping guy inside is the only one who could tell Sephiroth about his real mother. Hojo knew what he was doing when he said Jenova. He completely erased Lucrecia from the conversation. Any mention of her was probably also purged from the Manor. Best get it from that sleeping boio in the coffin, then.

As a child it was hard to understand, you think of him as evil as a child does. As a man you understand, his core was destroyed and he went mad.

Sephiroth's voice is also meh. He was way better in the original. Genesis and Angeal try to sound as close as possible to the original so their performance are solid.

This scene solidified Genesis as a top 3 character in Crisis Core for me. Not that he wasn't already awesome but his approach here was just 10/10 on point

Jenova was literally in the tank behind them and only an idiot would try to lie in that scenario where all common sense says that Sephiroth will come to the truth very quickly as he did. Honesty is the best policy here, they're friends, or they're supposed to be and Genesis was right about everything he said. It's not his fault Sephiroth went mad. His sanity was already starting to crack.

@@amuroray9115 He was as direct as possible. How did Genesis ruin his mind? Sephiroth was already starting to lose it before Genesis even spoke a word. He cut the tank and saw the monster. Then he went in the basement and read all the records and lost his mind completely. Genesis had nothing to do with it

3:12 This new VA for seph didn’t do him justice. OG George Newbern absolutely SLAYS it as seph, the new VA in reunion doesn’t convey seph with the right tone & emotion. This scene here and the “you will rot” the way George does it, he says it with such contempt & conviction. The moment where he loses his humanity for the first time & becomes the villain we all know, was portrayed so well in OG through his voice. It was so flat & monotone in reunion.
This all could have been avoided if Sephiroth was the one who gave Genesis the blood transfusion when he got injured.
So if he heard this prior to nibelheim incident, why would he go mad there and kill everyone after locking himself in the mansion, maybe that's the timeline split,.Genesis.

Sephiroth to me is the most tragic final boss in Final Fantasy History. He's a former war hero that was manipulated into becoming a harbinger of death by an alien parasite thanks to a fucked up experiment by Hojo. He was tricked into killing his actual friends and family all because Shinra fucked him over. He's not even the one that killed Aerith.
I wonder how are they going to insert this since in FF7:Rebirth they did not include this scene.

Nope, that's what hurts me the most.
If he knew he had another biological mom that still existed, and that she still cared for him, Sephiroth would've been a completely different person growing up.
But to be fair, it was all her fault to begin with. She had a guilty conscience over what happened to Vincent's Dad and couldn't 'cope', then she went and started a relationship with Hojo* thinking it was for the best (it was not for the best...) after Vincent discovered that Lucretia was part of the research team that was with his Dad looking for the Chaos materia, where he died, ended up screwing both Vincent's and Lucretia's futures permanently.
She was too hard-headed to be reasoned with. She couldn't accept that Vincent was ok with his Fathers' death.
Poor Sephiroth. I cried during this! 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭I NEVER liked Genesis. Reunion was actually the first Final Fantasy VII video game I ever played. The Switch version was the most amazing Christmas gift ever! Right now I'm on Chapter 5 and the Genesis boss fight is so annoying. I have died way too many times than I can recall. The BOSS FIGHT with Genesis in Chapter 5: Where Are You? is ridiculous.
I hope Vincent one day tell Sepiroth that Lucretia actually loved him and she's her real mother.
