Everybody talks about 10, but 9 was the last game in the series that I enjoyed from start to finish., No crazy growth system has the classic feel of the first six games and asks so many existential questions, this game literally made me appreciate the power of storytelling and cohesive writing because it's so much more digestible than say 7 or 8 for example

Nobuo totally nailed the feel for this song. It is amazingly fitting for that endgame boss. You're right; it sounds evil, spiteful and proud, at the same time. Great theme for a great character in a pretty epic battle.

Final Fantasy IX is my favorite FF game, so naturally I definitely hope you get the chance to experience it someday, Jesse. When I started requesting songs for you, this was one of the first songs that came to mind that I wanted to request. But I decided against it when I saw people already had, so in a way I got one of my own requests in this video. So big thanks for doing this one!
Very glad you enjoyed this. And while I don't have a source, I've also definitely heard over and over that FFIX's soundtrack is Uematsu's favorite.

Oddly enough, The Black Mages never covered this song. I know, right? Should've been a no-brainer, but oh well.
They *did* however cover the actual final boss theme from FF9: simply called "Final Battle" on the OST, with their version titled "Grand Cross", named after the boss's infamous attack.
I can't wait to hear your thoughts on those one day!

    • @standaman4578

didn't they cover grand cross (necron boss theme) though? interesting they didn't do dark messenger... also there's an ocremix album of covers and stuff of FF9 songs called Worlds Apart, it has what's probably my favorite version of dark messenger, the song is called Arxidopita. the first 5 minutes or so of it is Dark Messenger but the song is like 14 minutes long, not sure what the rest of it is a cover of. also there's another really good song on that album called Zero World, it's a cover of Grand Cross (Necron boss theme)

FF8 and FF9 were in production at basically the same time (after the success of FF7 they were like "well we'd better get started on the next two!"), so it's likely that Nobuo was composing their soundtracks at the same time.

    • @DownUFO
      @DownUFO ปีที่แล้ว +24

There was probably a gap, because Uematsu has mentioned that he composed FF8’s OST while staying home in Hawaii, meanwhile Square flew him around Europe on an all-expenses paid trip so that he could get in the mindset for 9’s OST.

I don't think IX is "unique". I think of it more as the distilled essence of FF. It's the most Final Fantasy game in the franchise. Which is not a bad thing at all. I think there's an argument that it's the best game in the series, even as someone who considers VII as my favorite game of all time.

Though 7 will always have the best seat in the theatre of my heart for the time in my life when I first experienced it, 9 is just so different, so unique, and so charming, that it has its own entire chamber reserved for that world alone. A dark fairytale told in deceptively bright visuals; a children's picturebook teaching the meanings of death and life. There's nothing else like it out there, and of course the music is fittingly Nobou-tastic.

In regards to citing the source of Uematsu's claim of 9's OST being his favorite, here's one quote from Games Industry (dot) Biz in the article Focus On: Final Fantasy Composer Nobuo Uematsu (can't link because TH-cam might auto-flag it as spam), "What would you say is your favorite of the Final Fantasy games you've worked on?" to which Uematsu replies, "Final Fantasy IX, both in terms of the game itself, and the music." Although in the same interview, he mentions that his favorite individual song is One Winged Angel. Also worth noting just for the sake of interesting tidbits, he says that his favorite video game music from other games/composers is Kondo's work in the Super Mario series. Another fun bit about the FF9 soundtrack, Square apparently didn't ask for a very big lineup of music, they just gave him a loose list of requests. But he ended up surprising them with over 100 recordings, due to getting so into the process.

This is one I've been waiting to see you listen to. FF9 is highly recommended for a play through even if you don't stream it. There's an emotional journey. It's one of the best FFs to be introduced to the series with. It started development as a non-main series Gaiden game that took elements from everything in the past and combined them, especially from the 8 and 16 bit eras. Part way through development it was changed to the 9th entry into the series though. The Main Battle music makes amazing use of the FF1/2/3/4/5/6 Bass Line, (I know you have a long queue, but I do highly recommend checking out maybe a FF Battle Theme compilation video). Melodies of Life is the theme of FF9 and is one of the best pieces in the series. Not to hype up Melodies of Life in a huge way, but when I listen to it now, the message makes me cry a little. But I do think you would enjoy FF9... It's just fun, and the OST is one of the best.
And While I'm promoting games I think you'd love... Let's get you to play something that's NOT Final Fantasy... You need more Wild Arms 1, Jesse. If you're playing games just for the music, Wild ARMS is a game I'd put money on that you'd love. It's also available on PSN for a good price.

If you liked FF7 and FF8, I think you will like this one too, the gameplay isn't too different. However, this game does feel more 'classic' compared to FF7 and FF8. It's atmosphere is more cozy and laid back. Some people like it and some people prefer FF7 and FF8 approach.
Btw, about this song in particular, try to compare the drums at the beginning with the drums in 'Tyran Castle' from Chrono Trigger (a song you already reacted). Both songs were composed by Nobuo and you can hear some similarities there.

You're right, this has Uematsu written all over it. It was funny to me when the prog rock game out and you instantly went "this is Uematsu" because it really is textbook. Mostly this reminds me of Tyran Castle from Chrono Trigger.
As for Uematsu saying this is his favourite soundtrack...well, I don't have an actual source for that. I've heard a lot of "he has claimed that FFIX is his favourite and work he's most proud of" as well as FFVI being one of his favourites to work on because he was able to experiment properly for the first time. I've never heard it for any of the others, so there could be a bit of truth in both claims.
There are a couple of things that make me think it could be true though; before composing for FFIX, he was given a couple of weeks off to travel around Europe for inspiration. He looked at like a lot of old castles and that sort of thing. I think he really did get incredibly filled with inspiration because FFIX was his biggest soundtrack by a decent margin; 140 out of 160 tracks he composed ended up in the game. I think he went _so_ over on FFIX that he burned himself out, because for FFX, for the first time he enlisted other composers to assist; Masashi Hamauzu and Junya Nakano.
I'm not saying that it matters either way which is his favourite, and I could be completely wrong, but this is how I feel based on piecing together what I've heard

Its funny you say 9 reminded you of others games, as thats kind of the whole point of it.
It is filled with homages to all the past FF games as it was originally intended to be the "last one" (before ps2 news changed that).
So the game is brimming with heart and soul and you can really tell the team put their all into it. It is def my fav FF game but 14 is a close 2nd.
Funnily enough 14, the game that calls back to all past games, had one of its biggest expansions "Shadowbringers" based HEAVILLY from 9, which as a 9 fan, i loved.
I hope you enjoy your play if 9, its really cool and if you have played 7 and 8 it helps elevate it i think. (Also 6,5,4,3 as well). The more you know the better.

One of my absolute favorite themes in all of Final Fantasy. Am I biased towards it because FFIX is my favorite entry with my favorite characters? Probably. Do I care? Not at all. Am I jamming? Absolutely.

    No spoilers here!
FF9 is _definitely_ a game to play, especially if you've enjoyed what you've experienced so far with the Final Fantasy series (and you most definitely have). FF9 blows 8 out of the water on just about all fronts, and it's always been in the top 3 for me!
Also, I'm seconding what others have said about using _The Moguri Mod_ if and when you decide to play this on PC. It's such a boost to the overall experience that it really ought to be mandatory these days.

Nobuo has said that FF9 is his fav soundtrack and it has like 109 (there abouts) and they are all great and yet traditional.
ProJared said the best thing about the game.
    "FF6 is my favorite
FF7 is the most important one
    FF9 is the best one"
And its kind of true. Its a refreshing, classic feeling game...while feeling modern (modern for 2000 at least)
The OST is a banger and has sooo many good tracks that I highly reccomend you play the game to experience to hear them.
    Merry Xmas.
Also if you liked this, I do reccomend looking up on your own time a video of someone playing "Beat Saber" to this song. Its really cool....like a music video almost.

So without going into major spoiler territory, this is the battle them for the final battle against Kuja.
What's really neat about Kuja's theme in general, is that it's a rearrangement of the desert temple music from FFV.
Love Kuja, 2nd favorite villain in the franchise after Kefka (and he himself is an amalgamation of Kefka and Sephiroth as part of 9's theme of honoring the entire franchise up to that point)

This song is such a banger. I'd put it up there with One Winged Angel, but for some reason, this song is so underrated. I'd love to hear a hard rock or metal cover of this song, or better yet, Soken cover this song.
