A lot of streamers that played the original had similar things to say about the first two phases… and then the 3rd phase hit and without exception they were all like “oh yeah, that’s what we were waiting for”

I grew up with the original (7th grade when it came out) and I remember playing this boss fight originally and having similar thoughts to Jesse during the first 2 phases. Once that third phase hit my brain just said "okay this bops" and I paused for a second to enjoy the music.

On a more technical note, as was pointed out by Alex Moukala, the J.E.N.O.V.A. track has a total of eleven (!) frickin' key changes. Which fits the whole theme of Jenova being a shapeshifting monster.

Right at about 15:35, you can hear a little undertone of "One-Winged Angel"/Sephiroth's theme start to sneak in there as well, indicating the connection between the two characters. They did some really clever things with the Remake music.

The reason the first 2 phases was kind of mysterious and confusing because that was made to kind of resembling whats going on in the story at that time. This fight didnt appear in the original at this point in the story so who played ff7 before will be left kinda confusing (while the new fan also confuse because wtf is genova and why its here). Its a tease from Sephiroth for whats to come and its a lesser version of Genova, so the first 2 phases were lackluster (is this Jenova? Why are we beating it at this stage what is going on). The 3rd phase was fan service, kick off Genova theme in an ‘modern’ way but it still a tease from Sephiroth ( you can hear Sephiroth theme in it somewhere). Overall, its an experimental track in the game and I respect them for doing it.

The thing to remember about FFVII Remake is that the music is dynamic. The music responds to what’s happening on the screen or when phases occur.
I do think the buildup was worth it for the third phase. Jenova Dreamweaver’s entire boss fight mirrors the three times you fight Jenova throughout the original game, and culminates in the final phase…but we’ve still got some games left in the Remake series.
Jenova Synthesis in Remake will be nuts.

This fight was absolutely amazing to play... When the P3 hits I felt so hyped by the music finally kicking in.
I think you didn't noticed but there is a very small bit of One-Winged Angel at one moment and I think it was the best thing ! Jenova is Sephiroth 'mother'... She is an extraterrestrial entity 'the Calamity from the Sky', she is at the very center of FFVII's plot. So yes, she is a big deal.

  • @preslim84
    @preslim84 3 ปีที่แล้ว +30

You probably didnt pick it up, but at 15:38 is the melody for Sephiroth's theme One-Winged Angel. How they mixed that in there was so good. Such a great track and homage to the original, masterpiece!
And as others have mentioned, the reason why this felt like it dragged on too long is because each phase's music was looped to match the gameplay. If you listen to the actual song, the build up doesnt take as long and the pay off is better.

      I wholeheartedly disagree.
As someone who hasn't played the game, I personally prefer the first two phases of Genova Quickening. (I still live the last phase, but the first 2 are much more powerful to me).
I certainly don't think that it "doesn't hit" as a standalone piece, on the contrary it's a compositional masterpiece.

JENOVA is a shape shifter so I think that the first two phases fit because we (cloud et al) really don't know who she is yet, even though we as veterans do. The little nod to one winged angel was perfect when I first heard this. Gotta love the music for it's attention to detail.
Phase three kicks you when your least expecting it. That's kinda why they went that route. These guys recently seem to really enjoy surprising you when you least expect it. Take air buster, it is a hyper hard hitting song from the beginning but then when you expect it to loop....NOPE, SURPISE MFER THERES A WHOLE NOTHER SECTION! Your idea of feeling like coming home when third phase hits, yeah ...yeah that's this whole song in a nutshell. WE BACK BOYS!
Also the JENOVA Dreamweaver is essentially a title. In the og game there were multiple boss fights : birth, life, death and synthesis. So this is essentially playing on that. There's some other reasons she's called Dreamweaver there, but that's spoiler territory! Play it and have fun!

I think the way they did the remake version is pretty exciting for the player. The fact that I as a fan playing through game already knew the melody and I could slightly hear it on the first phase made me wanting more. And then the second phase hit, and I could recognize the melody starting to kick in. It got me even more excited! And then BOOM the third phase hit me with all the nostalgia. It was pretty hype. They did it to One Winged Angel too. I think it's a special treat for the og fans. Well, more like a fun tease.

Respect your opinion on first two phases.
I wish I was watching live during the reaction to explain the scene setting up the fight. To avoid spoilers, another reason why the music starts slow is to carry on a tragic scene leading up to the fight. It also sets up the dreamy visuals and character building for the theme of this character. FYI Jenova was not called dreamweaver in the OG , this is all new to us and you called it perfectly in the OG jenova theme reaction.

    Heya! Love your videos!
    A few things you commented:
    - About Jenova (SPOILERS FROM FF7 ORIGINAL THAT ISNT EXPLAINED IN REMAKE YET, BE WARNED): Jenova is an alien that came to FF7's planet a thousand or two thousand years ago, to try and "eat" the lifestream, Jenova was more or less wiped by the Ancients but some cells survived (More or less every event in FF7 was caused directly or indirectly by Jenova). Jenova can alter its appearance and also make you see things that isnt there.
    - Yoshi P (Director and Producer of FFXIV) and Soken explained how they work to create music and bosses, and they told in an interview that they do both things at the same time, Yoshida and the writters tell Soken and the team responsible to design the boss how they want it and they do it more or less together.
Its not the same team as for FF7R, but I guess they do it in a similar way?

  • @AxeloftheKey
    @AxeloftheKey 3 ปีที่แล้ว +23

Okay, I have a story about this one, and why it hit me harder than any other track in VII Remake (though others might be better technically or musically).
The leadup to VII Remake was a lot of buildup and hype. The E3 before it released, we heard for the first time some of the music and saw extended gameplay. The very first boss fight was shown, Scorpion Sentinel, featuring the first rendition we would hear of Those Who Fight Further (which you have listened to). Unlike the later version Airbuster (which you also listened to), Scorpion Sentinel was more symphonic and orchestral. To be clear, the song is amazing, and I always liked it, but the original is so obviously utilizing MIDI to replicate guitar and synth-keyboard sounds. Fans started asking if VII Remake would feature much in the way of guitars and synths, which people associate with many songs on that soundtrack (including the original version of J-E-N-O-V-A which is synth-heavy). In an interview that I have had trouble tracking down, the developers stated that they went for a full orchestral rendition because (and I am paraphrasing) the sounds of the original were the way they were as a result of technical limitations, and the orchestral versions represent what the developers wish they could've done in 1997.
Obviously, to die-hard fans, this wasn't the most satisfying answer. As we led up to the game's launch, I steeled myself for a soundtrack that I would like but that would not understand the musical tone of the original. As one might expect, when the guitars kicked in during The Airbuster, I realized the devs had maybe misled me just a tick.
When I reached this boss fight, however, fighting against Jenova Dreamweaver with a new version of this song, it immediately opens as a deep, booming orchestral piece. I liked it, but it did not have the tone of the original. I recalled their comments about synths and said "well, I guess they just wish the original had sounded like this." And then I reached the third phase of the fight, the beat DROPS hardcore, and the synths of the original kick in.
Needless to say I was in love and it blew my mind. What VII Remake's soundtrack manages to do is draw upon nostalgic sounds when they want to, but interweave it into a tapestry that is larger and grander than you could expect. Utilizing pacing and suspense, the game makes longtime fans wait for the moments they remember, including musical ones, and then delivers just when you think they won't. They enhance the original ideas of the entire game, including its music, by surrounding it with new modern content that serves merely to upgrade your perception of the original experience.
This song is both an attempt to do something new with the melodies of the original song, and a love-letter to the feeling you got when listening to the original on your PS1 back in 1997. It is truly an excellent composition, and seeing people react to the beat drop gets me every time.

That Bossfight has dynamic soundtrack design, so the first phase really lingered there due to the gameplay pace. The official version of the suite doesn't linger quite as long, but of course in a game it's all to serve the experience. It really feels epic going through such a difficult fight and then thinking you won, only to get hit by that complete final phase transformation and the original synth tones and rhythm starts to kick in.

  • @LightKeyDarkBlade

The Remake arrangement, "J-E-N-O-V-A - Quickening", was again co-composed and arranged by Tadayoshi Makino, who also did "The Airbuster" which you have just reacted to.
In both of these examples, he took an original piece of music then made both a faithful recreation _and_ his own take on it (where he went nuts). The difference is the beginning of "The Airbuster" is the recreation of the original then it transitions to his own take (or plural "takes), while in "J-E-N-O-V-A - Quickening" it went from his takes to finally the recreation.
Personally, I like the music of phases 1 and 2 but I can understand why you feel indifferent about them. And I think you _might_ have a different opinion if you hadn't listened to the original first and had listened to the Remake arrangement fresh instead. I guess the slower tempo and the not-so-in-your-face music makes sense for me because the fight is supposed to be dreamlike (hence the name "Dreamweaver"). You'll also notice that in the beginning of the fight in the video, one of the characters (Red XIII) said that "it's an illusion".
I don't think they hired any orchestras for FF7R, at least according to the OST's credits. They hired multiple strings groups and other individual musicians as well as the Philharmonic Chorus of Tokyo. Regarding which specific groups and musicians performed for this track, we don't know since it's not specified.

The dynamic music is so fun in this game. It keeps up with the player's pace. So yeah in this case it feels kind of dragged out during each phase to match how they're playing. But when you're actually in control, it can fly by when you're focusing on so many things at once.
It starts a bit slow and somber here, as something quite critical happens to one of the main characters instigating this fight... And they're kind of in a anger/confusion/sadness state.

You were not really hearing "Final Fantasy VII Remake - Jenova", but a gameplay of the fight.
What that does is that phase 1 and 2 will last until the player reaches phase 3. The game dynamically changes the music on the fly. I don't know if there is a offical score avilable somewhere where the timing is not up to the player playing the game and instead what the composer thought "correct".

I actually feel like Part 1 of Jenova Quickening is slower and more melodramatic because it gives the player a bit of time to process what happened in the scenes before this fight. You’re supposed to think “Sephiroth didn’t run his sword through that guy… and then he got up from it… and we meet Sephiroth here?!?!? And now we’re fighting Jenova?!?!? Why the hell is she here?!?!?!” *head explodes*
In Part 2, it feels like the music is just adding that the fight is progressing, the strings and the higher key gives a sort of hope, but it’s still whimsical and even dire. It’s just the right amount of spice to keep the player focused on the fight.
Many mention that Parts 1 and 2 are a sort of build up to Part 3’s nostalgia-bomb payoff, which is almost a perfect cover of the original Jenova theme. I felt when I played FF7R that the entire chapter in this part of the game is a buildup to this particular fight and especially Part 3 of Jenova Dreamweaver, and that downward scale to start Part 3 just comes and makes an old like me pause the game just to listen to this part and let the feelings from the OG FF7 wash all over me again.
To me, this chapter was easily the best part of FF7R simply because of the feeling the music Part 3 of the Jenova Dreamweaver fight gave me, and even more so because I had been getting little bites throughout this chapter and then how Parts 1 and 2 teased me. Makino left the best for last here to build anticipation. That end of the strings transitioning into the Stranger Things-style downward scale still gives me goosebumps.

It is epic that they built it up for dramatic effect but you are right. When I listen to this track I skip to phase 3. This theme is one of the most awesome boss battle themes ever and they hit us with pillows for 6 minutes before bringing in the train. I wanted to be hit with the music train like in the original!!! Lol I was bopping to the song before the fight even loaded and then went wait... Oh this is all unexpectedly chill. 🤔
In the context of the game, it was pretty cool. But they held back their punches on that theme and I would have preferred the old school feeling of "OH GOD I'm about to get whooped! Let's go! 🤩"

I'm a little late for the party here, but on the subject of the build-up structure, that fits perfectly in the game, see: FFVII Remake has this thing (especially in hard mode) where the fight itself has its build-up, where you are fighting a boss, and you gotta be methodical with when to use your abilities and limits, so by the third phase of JENOVA, you already probably have an idea of her attack patterns and probably have one or two limits ready to unleash, and you wanna be aggressive, so the original theme kicks in the right moment, where you spend it all to fight it and see it down. It is so good that it makes the later bosses way lackluster if compared, and you even fight Sephiroth itself later on, but it just doesn't deliver as Jenova does.

  • @sharonwong5688
    @sharonwong5688 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Some people have probably already explained it but the songs have their actual length but will change accordingly to the battle. So let's say if you get to a second phase, the song will tailor accordingly and get to the part it should play during that phase. Many games do this but it's really insanely good with how FF7 Remake managed to do this so seamlessly without it being jarring at all.

afterall, videogame music is designed to enhance the gameplay. the feels is different and multiplied the enjoyment when playing the game compared to only listening it without context.

One of the ways I think about the difference between this and Airbuster is that Airbuster takes the recognizable parts of the original theme as Phase 1 and then builds on it whereas Jenova takes the original as the final phase and builds up to it (and then I guess OWA does a bit of both). My hope is that one of the next parts of remake gives us another Jenova that gives it the Airbuster treatment where the subsequent phases feel like "sequels" to the original theme.
Another thing I will say for Jenova though is that there were a number of remixes of Jenova since the original in things like Advent Children and Dissidia that in my opinion (and I think a lot of others) didn't quite capture the techno/alien feel of the original completely. To me Phase 3 hit so hard because it was like, after 23 years, "Finally - THIS is what a new version of Jenova should sound like!"

I do not pretend to understand it but Alex Moukalas analeze is amasing with key changes and jenova being a desiver/shapeshifing entety, its amazing that composers can integrate so mutch of a boss/charecter into the music, its like when i found out Dark Souls last boss Gwyn, Lord of Sunlight and Cinder and Gwyn the light/white, his piano boss theam is only played on the white keys on the piano, sutch a upscure thing but so integral to the charecter.

It’s also important to note; in the album version of this remake track, it’s boiled down to about 7 minutes. This video shows the full boss fight, though the track is compartmentalized to flow with phases which happen based on the skill/damage of the player.
The 6/7 minute version feels much better paced to listen to, though in the boss fight feels perfectly normal to be this extended during gameplay.

Hey just a friendly heads up. FF7 remake isn't a 1 to 1 remake. It's actually a continuation of the original story, or maybe a parallel? I don't want to get too specific about it for the sake of spoilers.
It isn't necessary to play the original to enjoy the remake; you might want to look for a brief synopsis of FF7 original and Advent Children.
If you want to catch the full nuance of the differences in the plot, and some of the ways they changed the story telling process if not the actual story? The best way would be to play FF7 through, read or watch some analysis of the storytelling. Then do the same for Advent Children. Maybe even read/watch some stuff on Crisis Core and Dirge of Cerberus.
Yeah, it goes pretty deep. However you want to take the journey, welcome to the FF7 fandom.

I agree with your assessment on this one. I Absolutely love the original Jenova theme, but the remake version just didn't do it for me. I was honestly confused during the fight wondering why they took all the energy out of the track. Even when it does finally get going, the boss is at like 25% hp and you don't even hear it very long. Excited to watch your play through though! There's a lot of lesser talked about tracks that are a treat to listen to.

I'll say this about the fight, it's meant to loop for each phase, so you heard it longer because -they- took long to beat those phases. But it's a fight where if you know what you're doing, phase 1 is done in under a minute, phase 2 about a minute or 2, and phase 3 will be the long one but only up to 3-4 minutes.

'fun' fact: Dreamweaver was actually spoiled in a trailer for the game's 'theme song', but in game she was really cool, but yes, she's Very Hard at first lol. The music is very strange, as it's a 'softer' version than you expect as a long time fan, and I imagine even as a newer fan you look at the boss and you're like 'oh, this doesnt seem right'. Then of course the older theme shows up with the orchestral backing and wham!
The original game has four versions of Jenova, and the music for Dreamweaver makes me think more of the last of those, but I don't know if that's just me. In the original both her and Sephiroth don't show up until much later! (I get that it's not easy to do so when the games are over 30 hours long each but if you get the opportunity, i recommend playing the original too sometime. Good luck with your playthrough of Remake!)
