- Welcome to the eight installment of the MGS3 FOXHOUND Rank Video Walkthrough.
This video details several methods for infiltrating and escaping from Volgin's military fortress, Groznyj Grad. These are hands down among the most challenging of the game's sneaking segments, and we'll review several different methods, each of them significantly different from the others, in order to provide players with alternatives in the event that one particular strategy simply isn't working for them.

Love the video! As usual, you're at the top of your game in dissecting the game's gameplay and AI and using it to your advantage. I thought I knew a lot about MGS3, but I had no idea you had access to all your equipment during the Sorrow's river, much less that you could actually shoot the Cobra Unit's ghosts. I'm going to be a little bummed once these are over, and I sincerely hope you consider applying your expert approach to other MGS games. Looking forward to your next video!

I just finished MGS3 with FOXHOUND rank, and I don’t think I could’ve done it without your help. Great videos and the details you go into. All the replays of the possibilities. It’s just insane how much time you’ve spent to record and edit all that. One of the greatest walktroughts I’ve watched, and followed. I wish you did walkthroughts for 4 and 5, but hey you said why wouldn’t you do them. Great job again!

You should do a normal letsplay of MGS3. I'd totally watch that. I like your very skripted, informative voice, but I also like it when you sometimes very briefly break out of it and have some fun. I'd watch an LP done by you. MGS3/TLOU, I don't care. Just do it! :D

Yeah I could see myself watching that. I'm not normally someone who watches streams or even LPs, save for a few special guys I like to watch (A German Spy, EpicNameBro, for Souls LPs), so it would be new for me, but since I really like your work, I'd definitely check it out.

I remember nagging you about it as well. I really hope it wasn't that bad, but I almost got the impression that you had given up on it, which would've been a big shame. Your talent in video making is remarkable, and you should never ever stop.
I hope you don't take this the wrong way, but I just thought I'd say it: If your video library were a lot more focused, uncluttered and easy to read, your view and especially subscription numbers would probably skyrocket after half a year or so. As you know, Metal Gear is currently being hyped up to no end thanks to MGS5. Your high quality content deserves to be viewed by so many more people, it's ridiculous. Maybe you could capitalize a little bit on all the hype that's being stirred up at the moment. I'd love to see your channel grow really big. You got a loyal core following, which is awesome, but everytime I see someone do a MGS playthrough and they don't understand the AI routines, gameplay mechanics etc., I always tell them to go watch your videos. I even told George Weidman from Super Bunnyhop when he did his notranq challange. He should've watched your stuff, that's all I'm going to say. :D
iWillWakeYouUp Nah, I appreciate the constructive criticism. If I were more interested in curating my TH-cam channel into something more professional, I would definitely take your advice. I have other creative outlets that I prioritize, though, and maintaining a semi-professional level channel is more work than I'm actually interested in putting toward it. You say make it to "the end" of the river the moment The End shows up, don't think I didn't notice that and even if that was unintentional it was intentional to me.
Hey James, I know it's unlikely, but adding time stamps to the descriptions of your MGS walkthrough vids showing just when in the videos you discuss certain topics would make finding specific parts of your videos much easier.
I think I know the reason why Naked Snake loses the ability to do CQC slams after his torture. You'll notice that he carries a small CQC knife, different from his survival knife, whenever he's got a gun or melee weapon that is CQC compatible (and he uses it to interrogate people he's grappled). Because he doesn't have that knife after he's tortured, he can't do any CQC moves, not even the slam, because the animations would look awkward if the player decided to transition from the basic grab and do the interrogation or the throat slit moves.
There's actually an AI bug regarding the SAA in prison escape sequence. If you hold up guards with it and shake them down for all their items, some of them actually drop ammo for the SAA. If you pick up SAA ammo in front of a guard you're holding up, Naked Snake will actually load the SAA (assuming it has no ammo) and the guard being held up won't use that opportunity to attack or go into alert despite how Naked Snake just demonstrated that the SAA was empty.
This is an awesome series, and I'm glad to find it since I've been revisiting MGS lately.
For those unawares, did you know the scientist uniform works inside the Grosnyj Grad facility? The guards are a lot easier to take down using the Cigarette Spray in this method, and scientists are only really a problem with the first floor library near the staircase to the locker rooms as there's one scientist there, and getting too close runs the risk of opening the door for him to see you and blow your cover.
Though... whether this tactic works on European Extreme? I have yet to try. x'D

guys, it's important: do NOT save the game in raikov's uniform while you're going back to destroy food and ammo deposit, or else you're game will need to be fully resetted because of a bug that i've encountered during a foxhound run. it basically prevents you to going back into the building where you've kidnaped raikov, and thereby completing the game. i hope i can be of some use. and sorry for my bad english, i'm italian ahahah
Wanna hear something bizarre? If you save a game with the croc cap and IMMEDIATELY shut the game off and load that save your camo becomes olive drab and your paint stays the same

at 45:50 is that true? i can get a 0 life bar at the end of the game, in the result screen, by still taking some damage throught the game and during this sequence, is it pure luck? by the way, i really love these videos of yours, keep up the good work ;)
james , a quick note that if you walk into a searchlight you actually dont get spotted its crazy i know but its very usefull and faster.

Yes, though the soldiers who control them mainly serve to initiate Caution mode if you shoot out the light. I don't recall having been seen by one directly after the light's been shot out.
James Howell Actually, I can take down all guards in an area and standing in the spotlight does nothing to me. At least in the 3DS version, I'm pretty sure the same will apply to this version of the game.

2: Unfortunately, there's not a lot of space for storing outtakes. I need to use the better half of a 2TB external HDD for the material that stays in by itself. You're not missing much, though. An outtake reel would largely consist of 10+ hours of my using the Fake Death Pill to capture footage with the exact framing that I want.

Yeah, the meal counter in the opening video was off. I must have used an incorrect source when putting that first one together. Fortunately, it wasn't a killing error since you can still get the FH rank by going zero-meals.

If you don't remove the transmitter, then some Ocelot Unit soldiers will be patrolling the lush green area where this video ended. I've been asked to provide a strategy for that contingency, which I'll do as an aside at some point.
Also theres a cutscene where eva pulls it out of you after you meet behind the waterfall in an -ahem- "interesting " way! Also of note she gives you the rpg which isnt shown but you can access during gameplay

My last save point is the prison. My current time is 1:35, do you think I'm in pretty good shape?
If it's your 25th save, I'd load up an old file and try to clear more setpieces between saves. If I'm being careful, I typically save at the prison, getting back into GG, the Volgin fight, at the first sneaking section after the bike chase, and at The Boss. So, from the prison, I'd say keep room for ~5 more saves until the end of the game.

It's been a while since I've played, but I believe The Boss places the gun in Snake's possession after the torture scene (she shoots Snake with a Fake Death Pill, hence why he has one embedded in his body).
Its the same gun she took from ocelot at the ponizovje cutscene. She probably gave it to him knowing ocelot would both catch up to him and looks up to him

James Howell I'm just curious but how long have you worked to find so many alternate routes and methods to getting there? Because I got the Foxhound rating before. But when you start talking about how you can do x,y,z instead or do this other thing. It really shows how dynamic the game is and how much effort you've put in. It's impressive!
