MGS3 || FOXHOUND Rank || Ep. 5: Underground Caves to The Fear

- This is the fifth episode of my walkthrough tutorial for earning the FOXHOUND Rank in MGS3. In this video, we observe strategies for traversing the underground caves, fighting The Pain, infiltrating the dockside warehouse, and gaining access to Leonin Granin's lab facility. We'll conclude with a quick and simple strategy for defeating The Fear.
I'd like to thank everyone for their kind words during the interim while I've been working on this. Real life responsibilities and other creative projects have taken my attention away from this video project over the past six months, and I'm glad now to have the leisure to resume their production. - เกม
MGS3 was such an amazingly full and dynamic game, I was maybe 10yo when it first came out and wasn't able to fully appreciate it for what it was.
48:32 Here you knock out the scientists to stop them from going into alert, but it turns out that isn't necessary. Scientists completely ignore a moving cardboard box :3 Well they get the white "!" but don't otherwise care.
Really! The scientists were always little alert pots for me. I always had trouble with them and figured that something as overtly questionable as a man running underneath a cardboard box would have triggered an alert. Shows that I should have experimented a bit more. I'll give this a crack to test it!
I never figured the C.Box, but lots of people have trouble with the scientists... if they see Snakes face they realize he's not a scientist. Holding triangle will do Otacons signature little glasses gesture and cover his face. Scientists won't bother you.
They go into alert if you walk over a body or up stairs, I think because they can see your ankles then? What the fuck ever, kojima.
It takes a while to put together a handful of strategies, and some of them I make up while putting together the videos to provide alternatives. The video editing and organizing process takes the longest, usually about two months since I do it in the margins of my free time from writing and a day job. Number eight IS forthcoming, but there's just a lot of work that goes into the planning and execution, especially since the levels become more complex and varied as the game progresses.
It is coming!! :) I'm going to start working on it this weekend in fact. I'm gainfully employed, so the work has slowed, but it's ongoing. I appreciate everyone's patience.

It'll be a little while. The goal right now is that I'll clear out the space from the start of Groznyj Grad through the fight with Volgin, just to keep the pattern of each video ending on a boss fight. That'll take us through the initial infiltration of Groznyj Grad, kidnapping Raikov, getting imprisoned, the prison escape, re-infiltrating Groznyj Grad, setting the explosives, and fighting Volgin. The biggest time-sink will be the Groznyj Grad areas since there's a lot of room to play there.
So pumped for Episode 6! I've been practicing a ton using techniques learned from your videos. It really is a hard game to get down just right! I always forget about a stray guard etc. that will ruin an entire section (i.e. Rassvet).
Even though these walkthroughs are old, there still amazing, well done man.

Yeah, that's a great tactic! I've found that the Fake Death Pill is invaluable for restarting areas that I need to practice when prepping for a Foxhound Rank run through tough areas, and you only get one pill on E Extreme. I prefer to take just a bit longer on this fight and keep the Fake Death Pill to make practicing future areas easier.

Imo you can destroy the fear in seconds, I got this from the speedrun MGS3 FoxHound speedrun hariku did. Just Use a fake death pill and when he turns away and dance throw a stun grenade and look away. Then take out a Patriot, AK 47, or a XM109? and his stanima will drain instead of his hp and you get a stanima killl not a kill kill

You're right. That is the fastest way to beat The Fear. :) I omitted it because it's more useful on a Foxhound Rank playthrough to keep the Fake Death pill for practicing problem areas. If I were to remake this video, I would at least have acknowledged this faster way of beating The Fear.
This is amazing guide. I do have one question and I know this is 6 years later; but why don't you simply ignore some guards sometimes? Like the one opening the door for you. Couldn't you of just gone through the door? Also on the docks; instead of taking out the third guard, it look like you may have had time to get the NVG and booked it to the door.

The fake death pill strategy. It's completely foolproof and makes The Fear non-existant :P
Yes, I have heard about it many times. :) I didn't use it here (though I would mention it if I revised the video) because I needed the FDP for quick restarts while recording. The FDP is a godsend compared to other MGS games where you have to seek out death if you want to restart to practice.
41:00 I threw the food item to high and landed on the edge of the roof but the dog still walked to it and ate it. I was like WTH!

I just discovered your Foxhound videos and I can't wait for the next one. These videos definitely deserve as many views as your boss videos since you break down every method available. Just one question, though: are you not a fan of the Fake Death Pill/Stun Grenade/Machinegun method to beat the Fear? It defeats him with a stamina victory even though a machinegun is used in the process. Or have you not heard of that method? If you haven't, I recommend it since it puts him down in seconds.

Sometimes during the Fear fight I don't equip the thermal goggles and don't shoot him, just try to follow him and dodge his attacks. I find it more fun and challenging. Of course, not something you'd do for a foxhound run
You sure can. I try to be flexible with the save locations in the game. Just make sure you don't go over 25, and you're golden.
For anyone doing this, you absolutely CAN eat food for a Foxhound rank.
You can use them anywhere. I try to space them out as much as possible.
This is a fantastic guide! I was wondering though, if the Fake Death Pill strategy for The Fear where you use it and trick him into thinking you're dead so he turns, giving you a chance to use a stun grenade on him and then shoot him with any gun for stamina damage worked for the Foxhound rank because I personally think that's the easiest method of taking out The Fear.
This walkthrough/tip series makes me think of hitman absolution & how gaurds/soilders get suspicious/go into alert Agent 47/Solid Snake is never dirctely spotted.
Another stragegy to fear; before fight, equip only your ak47 and stuns, then right in the start of the fight take an fake death pill and wait the fear to come next to you, then revive, throw the stun and spam him with the ak, note when he is stunned, he only takes stamima damage!!
So, I'm playing on hard mode and not on European Extreme, but I keep getting insta-spotted even though I'm wearing the croc cap at the warehouse dock where the end was.

i ended up with a glitch or i don't know what was it.. in this fight.. it was in PS2.. I climbed one of the trees and Fear jumped right next to the tree where i was hiding.. from that point.. i kept shooting him and he didn't move at all.. he kept screaming fear..
When you get low on stamina I would use animal camo since your gun won't shake :)

Yes, it would count as a kill and ruin the Foxhound Rank. However, it will not result in an alert. The enemies will just go into caution mode.
i use the wp grenades to rid the hornets from the pain's body.
In the area with the SVD, isn't there another silencer beneath the water on the southern end past the docks?
How do you throw magazines so far like the one @44:43 ? I'm playing on the PS2 and no matter how hard/long i hold square, I only manage to throw it half as long.
Troubleshooting technique on the pressure-sensitive actions is tough because there could be a number of chokepoints... one possibility is user input, which it sounds like you've addressed by pressing the button harder... another possibility is differences in controller sensitivity, which I'd try troubleshooting next. For example, I have two DS2 controllers, and the deep push sensitivity on one is very dull so I need to really jam the button into the controller's body.
If you have a second DS2, I'd recommend giving that a shot to see if you get better results.
This game is 1 of the very best games ever made. I'd say top 3 or top 5.
A soldier needs to be strong in spirit, body and technique - and the only thing you can learn from someone else is technique. In fact technique doesn't even matter. What is most important is spirit.
I think when I did euro extreme that I actually ran past the scientist and guards in the computer room with the box on snake's head.
Does that sound reasonable or am I misremembering??
Great videos, but I have one little question. How many times am I allowed to reganerate my stamina because my is like a quater lower then in the videos. On various internet pages everyone is saying different things.
Milchtanker You can save and quit, come back to the game much later, and Naked Snake will have more health or have full health, stamina, and injuries and diseases will have disappeared.
i wonder if setting your systems clock ahead would work for healing, because on the ps2 you could set it forward during the end battle to let him die of old age

The m37 and smoke grenades can also be used to kill his armor. The shotgun should be tactically reloaded.
Also, the area to the left in the river has poisonous spiders. Throwing these at guards results in them being poisoned but they do not realize it. These guards will die shortly. This is NOT counted as a kill!
Just curious: is the Battery you can get off of one of the dock guards worth the possible hassle, or not?
Swedish X In my experience I always unequip items that use batteries after a few seconds of usage.

if you literally just wait a minute then snakes eyes will adjust to the cave and it will be easy to see
I take it that killing The End at the warehouse is a bad thing for this run? If you get the SVD earlier you can eliminate him, saving time for the boss fight, but you will have to go against a lot of Ocelot soldiers instead.
EDIT: Another thing that happens in the pain fight is that sometimes he might pull a trick by making a duplicate of himself, a fake, using bees to cover himself and nothing as well. Both will stand still. If you hit the real one, it gives you a good advantage to attack him. hit the fake one, and well, lets just say the result is not so good.
EDIT2: Something I just realised: The End is taken into the warehouse via wheelchair right? Where does he go afterwards? There's no elevator, only stairs, and there is no door on ground floor, as far as I recall. Did they lift him up the stairs somehow?

You mention in here that you can't use any food items on a Foxhound run through. This is the only place I've heard that. Every other guide I've looked up says nothing about food not being allowed to achieve the Foxhound rank. Do you have anything that shows one way or the other?
Hi Jared! The "no food" comment was misphrased. It is my goal for a FOXHOUND Rank, but the game itself only requires under 20. Good catch!

Jared Coles You bet! Thanks for the kind words. There's so much meat in this game (pun unintended), not even these videos really pull out the full depth of what's available. I like "breaking" games into working contrary to their intended design, and the wonderful thing about most MGS games is that they bend like that without breaking. I respect that balance.

What s the diference in normal killing and stamina killing bosses?
Different ranks and the special camouflages they drop after a stamina kill
Would killing The End when he was in his wheelchair attract attention in EX?
Please take your time! I'd rather continue receiving this excellent level of quality rather than some slipshod product.
Can I save after I defeated the pain ?
There's a faster way to beating The Fear non-lethally. Use your fake death pill. He comes up to you and turns his back. Revive yourself. Throw a stun grenade at him. When you see the stars over his head you drain his stamina using ANY weapon.

Am I not allowed to eat animals for Stamina?? I didn't read anything about that. Only (No Life Medicine) And yeah, I know this video is old. But following this guide for the Release on PS5.
I believe eating animals for stamina is fine - that was an error on my part. Fortunately, going by the guide, you shouldn’t need to in order to make Foxhound Rank. Good luck!

Btw. How many save do you use? I kind of want to save after The Pain also. I have so little health after Ocelot, so The Pain is painful to fight with my tiny healthbar.
I don't understand how you knock out the scientists and guards with 2 punches on extreme at 48:30 ..someone please help.every single time i hit them with 2 punches, it triggers an alert.

A smoke grenade will work just fine against the pain. He is an easy boss.

Jda4160 You only can save a limited number of times on a Foxhound run. Saving after beating The Pain would be a waste since you can cruise through existing the caves and the river section.
