  • Welcome to the ninth and final installment of the MGS3 FOXHOUND Rank Video Walkthrough.
    This video details different methods for handling the Shagohod sabotage sequence upon returning to Groznyj Grad after Snake's escape. We look at how to defeat Volgin using only CQC, and we see Snake and EVA through their escape from the facility. We'll review how to take down both forms of the Shagohod, and we'll finish the escape toward the WiG. We'll look at how to defeat The Boss using only CQC.
    I thank everyone for their interest in my work on Metal Gear over the years, and I hope you'll continue to enjoy whatever critical work I attempt next.
    Thank you for watching.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    2023 Update: This video formerly ended with a mini-essay explaining my reasons for stepping away from Metal Gear criticism - mainly, the series's increasingly harsh treatment of its female characters for pathos sat poorly with me. Eight years have passed since that declaration, and it served its purpose.
    However, the audience for these videos has changed since that time, as has much of the world, and I now feel that the mini-essay distracts from the overall Foxhound Rank series. I have therefore edited it from the video's end and removed the standalone version.
    I hope present and future audiences continue to enjoy this labor of love for a great series of games.
    I want to thank you for the awesome work you have done. I am playing through the whole series for the first time and I loved your commentary on MGS2 and MGS3. I had played MGS and MGS2 in high school but hadn't gone any further in the series. One of my students inspired me to play through the whole series and I am loving it.
    I had always loved the thematic richness of MGS2 and was so delighted to replay alongside your commentary and read your essay "Driving Off the Map" after playing it. There were moments in your MGS2 commentary where you unpack ideas around theory and criticism that made me start clapping and fist-pumping. I am a high school English teacher with a degree in literature and my theory classes were my favorites (shout out to Stanley Fish and Roland Barthes). Seeing someone not just taking video game criticism seriously but applying a sophisticated lens just tickles me to the core. I have had extensive conversations with my students this year about the Metal Gear series and all I do is parrot back your brilliant ideas.
    Likewise, I enjoyed your MGS3 commentary.
    I am now on to MGS4. I am enjoying the game so far, but I am so disappointed about the representation of women in the game. Your critique at the end of your MGS3 commentary is spot on. I keep talking my wife's ear off about the themes regarding PTSD and then lamenting the fact the camera is always placed at Naomi's breasts or Laughing Octopus's posterior. It's just disappointing. It's unnecessary.
    What really bums me out is that because of these choices, the game has turned off a brilliant critic like you. As I said one of the great joys in playing MGS2 and 3 is to play alongside your commentary. I am sincerely bummed that I don't have you as a sort of conversation partner. I am trying to find other play-throughs on TH-cam and they're just disappointing. Not only do they lack the sophistication as far as a critical lens goes they aren't great at teaching techniques like you did in your MGS3 videos. No tea no shade to other players. I am just not the target audience. I have found an old podcast that is alright. Sometimes they start digging beneath the surface critically.
    This is in no way meant to be a critique of your choice to not make a commentary on MGS4. I totally get it and really respect your decision. I just wanted to let you know that I have deeply personally enjoyed your work.
      Thank you very much! This means a lot to read.
      Though I'm not in a position to give MGS4 a similar video treatment, I wrote about it as the focus of another piece titled "Monstrous Births." (That was 11 years ago! I feel ancient.) If you'd like to read that, you can find it here - www.deltaheadtranslation.com/MGS4/index.htm
      If you do read it, I hope it contributes to your enjoyment of that game, too. As I mentioned in the video, I still love the things about Metal Gear that I always loved, and I think there's a lot worth discussing and appreciating about them, so I'm glad that you're taking the time to share them with your students. I am certain they appreciate your time and being given the opportunity to explore their thoughts with someone who cares.
    James,
    I want to say thank you for making this entire mgs3 foxhound rank series. Your video walkthrough is among the best one I've ever seen, and watching it is extremely enjoyable because of your skillful play as well as your extraordinarily deep understanding of how the game works and what the game wants to express.
    I happen to have some experience of making commented video walkthrough myself and I do know that huge amount of time and efforts are required to put together even a twenty-minutes segment. It's beyond my imagination how hard it was for you to finish this entire ten-hour project behind the scene. Thousand appreciations for all those hard work.
    Finally, it's a bit sad for me to hear that you will no longer share your thoughts about the game since I really like the mgs franchise and I also like the style and tones of your comments. But I do understand your stance and your decision. Wish I could get to see more enjoyable videos/writings from you in the future.
    Excellent video series James. You are certainly entitled to your opinions about what you approve of and what you find un-acceptable. While I disagree with most of you`re reasons as to why MGS is inherently too sexist to review critically, I can at least respect you`re delivery of well explained conclusions in context. I don't intend on trying to convince you of seeing these issues in any other light, but I do want to mention a few items that describe why I disagree. The biggest item being the concept of choosing how to play the game. As you mentioned, you choose the content that you put in these videos, and the strategies you find appropriate. That really is the beauty of these games. You choose how you conduct you`re business. Whether you choose to sneak by every sentry or kill every sentry you see, you choose the way you carry out the mission. Most of the instances of sexism you mention are largely optional and almost easter egg like. I would have never known about the EVA medical history thing if I didn't search for the info online. If you want to search for every underwear model hidden in every locker, you can do it but it doesn't carry any significance with playing the game and understanding the story as a whole. I will admit that the Peace Walker dating scene with Paz was probably the closest instance that Kojima has come to crossing a serious ethical line. However, he did also throw in a dating mission with Kaz which really seemed to diminish the entire concept as a kind of slap stick joke that holds no serious cannon plot elements, "at least in my opinion". As for the Ground Zeros concern, I must say that there is a big difference between advocating a taboo subject, and simply introducing a taboo subject as something that happened in the story. If Kojima would have suggested the former, I would definitely agree with you in saying that these games have become something toxic, but he simply didn't do this. Otacon`s relationship with his mother was another taboo subject, but he didn't advocate what happened. He simply said that it did happen. These games are rated Mature for a reason. The themes and concepts of these games can range to just about anything. Whether or not you interpret these themes as a promotion toward sexism is up to you.
    On the topic of knocking eva\emma out and dragging her- we have become so desensitized towards x-on-male violence that we see nothing wrong in killing them by the dozen, and here we are upset over giving the player the option to knock out a woman. abusing Emma is a bad thing not because she's a girl, but because of her vulnerable state- she's a kid who can barely walk and she trusted you. The same goes for EVA. The real reason using these tactics should feel wrong is not because of their sex, but because of their relation to the main character.
    It's a shame that if you knock Eva out, you don't get berated for it on the radio like you did in MGS2. I think Sigint and Paramedic would have something to say about that...
      Emma Emmerich is 18 and a hacker for the NSA. The idealized nature of many opinions in this video are great on paper. However, they are not objective and he has made that very clear. With that said, it’s important to see the larger picture of MGS and realize: almost all of the characters are either anti-heroes or villains. To depict any of them as innocent is to miss the point of the entire series. This of course is only one opinion based on 25 years of MGS study-none of which qualifies it as objective either.
    Really incredible walkthrough and I love your commentary at the end. It seems like a lot of people commenting on this like to think you're just a perfect, video game playing robot for us to watch but you aren't. You're a very intelligent person analyzing what you see as negative in something you love a lot which takes courage to tackle. I'll never understand why people hate the idea of questioning anything. It's a real breath of fresh air to hear someone in the community talk about such topics so thank you.
      +James Howell Hi James i really respect your efforts on making this walkthrough/tutorial and your opinion on MGS games i totally agree the sexism is clearly there, come to think of it, its Japanese game still influenced by Japanese culture to a certain degree the "eastren countries" which includes middle east where im from the sexism been part of the cultures for long time unlike western countries , it is sad that we in the eastern countries still do not view men and women as equal, to my knowledge the term Bukakke is Japanese and it's very horrible act which objectifies the women and that i believe the ultimate sexism don't you agree?
      The reason why people hate others questioning things is because most people prefer routine, for everything to be the same day in, day out. It makes them feel... safe. Others on the other hand rattle the cage and see what shakes loose. To find a truth to it in a way. Not THE truth, but a truth, a different way to see it, neither right nor wrong.
    Excellent work James, I've been watching your videos ever since you posted the Subsistence clips 7-8 years ago, but I never thought you would come out with a project as immaculate as what would normally be a basic walk through, turned into a much more easily digestible documentary based ON the walk through you have made (if that makes sense)!
    The Rootwork Building project on The Last of Us is very well made, though in my opinion I prefer this guide based on how easily digestive I think it comes across to people who may have never even had the courage to select Extreme or European Extreme difficulty in a MGS game, and I think this is the most important thing about any form of documentation or documentary, it's accessibility to those who have never 'done' it. Even the bare concept of recording a task within the game in multiple ways is not something most people go out of their way to do in a detailed walk through, that's not to say it's something that should be done, but the fact you have taken the effort to do those things several times in your guide is great.
    Very analytical and well written. I have already achieved the Foxhound rank many years ago but I still find myself watching this in attempt to acquire more knowledge on the game. Puts the general concept of other walk throughs to shame ;) I hope you are proud of this work as much as I am proud you took the effort to do this and make it to the end, with other commitments and all.
    Just thought you deserve the feedback at the end of it all. I don't really have any criticism if you were looking for one ;)
    I can't stress enough how thankful I am for this series.
    My first playthrough of this game was rather unfun. I didn't really know how the guard awareness worked and was constantly on my toes, trying to crawl absolutely everywhere to not get seen. I was also trying way too much to tranqing everyone instead of using stealth and CQC. The control scheme also seemed a bit too complex/unconventional for me.
    Now after watching your videos the game is much more enjoyable for me. I am able to sneak through maps a lot more effeciently and use the inventory to its fullest.
    Thank you so much!
I did eat 10 meals and still got Foxhound so either there is a threshold that I'm not aware of or it doesn't exist.     So your calling this game sexist even with the Boss? Meryl? in fact the entire story arc of the franchise is set in motion from the work of the Boss(A FEMALE). There are plenty of ass camera shots of old snake, no one claims it's offensive to old people. I am so disappointed, this is truly your reason for not playing the MGS games anymore? I didn't see any female characters have diarrhea problems but I am sure if akiba was female it would be sexist. I was really enjoying this play through then you say a bunch of horrible things at the end, which throws me off because It's obvious you are an intelligent person. Snake and Big Boss are rewarded with death, Otacon becomes the father of sunny, how is this not sexist towards men? of course it's not but it underlines how asinine modern feminism is. Replace all of the female characters with male ones in the exact same context and it would no longer be sexist, I don't get how an intelligent person can fall for such rubbish. If you think females need to be represented in media in a selective way that is not offensive, then you sir are the only one being sexist thinking females needed to be treated differently in the first place.
    The blow against the MGS franchise is even larger because this is one of the best play throughs of MGS3 on YT, great job and thanks for uploading but I think your criticism is as arbitrary as someone else hating this game because the graphics are outdated, sexism? honestly? I am cringing so much now in epic disbelief.
    • @bendecius4976
      @bendecius4976 9 ปีที่แล้ว +12
      Ben Decius The more I think about it, pretty much all of the most intelligent people the MGS universe are female, E.E, Sunny, Naomi, The Boss ext. Being able to look at Eva's medical history is not the rebirth of a type of Jim Crow laws for women, and does not cause oppression. FFS... All modern feminism seems to advocates is censorship. Having a playboy mag in your video game, doesn't take any ones right to vote away, and it doesn't make the job market unfair. I am 100% baffled how you can fall for such utter rubbish. Was a very well called trigger warning, I am going to attempt to explain how this made me feel.
      It's like you where doing a perfect rendition of Ludwig van Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 23 "Appassionata" (it was very good run of mgs3) then proceeding to strip naked on stage telling everyone that Scientology is the way and truth while vomiting on the old people in the front row watching your performance. It's offensive because the MGS story is so well written. Anything that you think left a bad taste in your mouth is NOTHING compared to how us fans feel from your verbal rape towards such fantastically written characters. Your not being intellectually honest and you are cherry picking small details of the female characters to arrive at completely out of context conclusion. WHAT ABOUT WHEN RAIDEN WAS STRIPPED NAKED IN MGS2? I bet you if raiden was female, feminists probably would of tried to ban the game, or force an A rating. It's total bullshit dude, GET YOUR HEAD OUT OF YOUR ASS!! Stop supporting double standards, forcing special treatment towards female characters is just going to make those characters the death of any story they touch, every female character should not be contrived to be a reincarnation of Jesus and perfect role model, characters need to be flawed in order TO GROW and for us TO LIKE THEM!
      Now that I think about it, since everything can be rationalized if you are stupid enough to go with(watch the holy grail to see what I mean) I cannot fathom a female character that would please a modern feminist. Everything would be rationalized to be sexist. They will claim that the character is either to perfect (mary sue) or a bad role model (not perfect). It's a no win situation for either the audience, the feminist, or the writers. Maybe it's because art should not be contrived with an agenda.
      In the big picture, I don't want characters that either have a penis or a vagina to utterly change story telling just because they either have a penis or a vagina, it's as arbitrary as anything I could ever imagine when dealing with a story about the control of information, and the failings of generation to generation (the mgs story of course). The more I think about this the more upset I am with this mgs3 play through.
    • @WhatAboutTheProles
      @WhatAboutTheProles 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3
      +Ben Decius you're right- MGS makes a point to tell you someone is a genius before they focus the camera on their ass. game can't be sexist because it makes a point to tell you that before it started humiliating, stripping, and abusing women, they received a top-drawer education.
    • @Emberson-9000
      @Emberson-9000 3 ปีที่แล้ว
      @@WhatAboutTheProles Fair enough, but Raiden. Raiden's entire character arc from MGS2 to Rising is probably more baffling than anything most other characters in this series has endured, or is at least rivaled by The Boss, Naked Snake, and Solid Snake. It's not just the naked torture or escape scene either. In MGS2, he is as described in this playthrough "at the kid's table". Snake is off doing his thing, and Raiden has to disarm bombs and get electrocuted. He's berated for every action he takes, even if he wasn't given the choice like the situation with his VR training. He then has to abandon his wife because of the Patriots, forced to fight while Colonel Campbell tries to keep Rose and John safe. In Rising, he has to confront the trauma of coming to terms with the circumstances of his victims. X on male violence is a standard, and only when Raiden faces the fact that he likes killing is he okay with it again. This is terrible, but he was nurtured this way, and the game acknowledges that what he's doing is wrong. I'm not about to ignore sexual violence directed at women, but violence and humiliation directed at men should not be ignored. In the end, they are canceled out by each other in light of characters like Raiden, a man who suffers worse than most characters in the series regardless of gender.
I think MGS3 is the most creative and fun, though, since it takes a lot of the "prank" ideas featured in the MGS2 Tanker Chapter (like shooting bottles with a silenced weapon to create a distraction) and expanded upon that idea to create a full playground.
      And thanks for the good words! I'm always really happy to hear that people enjoy these.
    45:55 I love what you say about the sense of space created by the game's narrative. MGS3, more than any other game in the series, provides me with a sense of adventure, and that's largely down to the progression of its environments.
      Actually, I don't own a car and regularly walk many miles along highways, so I didn't think much of that aspect of it-however, I do think it's very cool that you deliberately chose to experience that type of space for foot travel in order to contrast with more dynamic wilderness.
      But, yes, apparently it's much easier to get away with such an aside (even with a comment about poverty) than with a long-considered, evidence-based statement about sexism.
      If you interrogate Raikov before you take care of him he will tell you it, along with how "The Colonel has trouble with bright mushrooms" and "Water... The Colonel is weak against water. After that he quotes lines from MGS 2.
      EDIT: One last thing: in the Boss boss battle, you ca find very interestingly named snakes in the field, including ones named Liquid and Solidus. I'll admit that GZ went a bit too far, and I do not like the design of Quiet, mainly because, what's the point of it especially when you can just change her appearance so she can actually be more clothed.     I've finally finished watching all your FH rank walkthrough videos for MGS3 and though I gave this last one a thumb up as always, I'm a little disappointed by your expression of your opinion on sexism at the end. I must say some points you shared here are worth thinking, but not all of them make sense. To me, it's really odd that these days, in order to achieve what's considered to be politically 'correct' or 'righteous', humanity can in fact go to the other extreme so that the final outcome can be catastrophic, such as immigration of uncultivated groups of people being treated kindly which then in turn sabotages the entire society, especially those who really work their life to get paid and reluctantly make easier the lives of these unemployed.
    I do not fundamentally object to this social infrastructure, but instead, when it's overly done, it's a monstrocity born out of good will. Feminism has an equally devastating effect when you place women's rights above these of men. In the modern English language, people even avoid using words like 'waitress' and 'actress' to refer to a female waiter or actor, in which case, the question comes down to this: since when do 'treating both genders equally' and 'avoiding distinguishing different genders' become the same concept?
    I don't seem to see that amount of rage coming when there are women harming men, or girls bullying boys mentally or physically in school, when compared to anything harmful to 'feminism'. And adjusting the content of an IQ test to make the average score achieved by females closer to that by males is nothing proper in nature, but widely carried out. If we're supposed to achieve total equality in our society for both genders, the next step should be to grant animals full protections and to stop them from being eaten by human for perpetuity in my opinion.
    So, I'll try again:
    I love this game on so many levels and for so many reasons. BUT:
    The sexism is really really disturbing. It affects some of the choices I have in game play, and it affects the story itself. Sometimes I daydream about how this game COULD have been with a more diverse cast, and less stereotypes. In a way those stereotypes as part of the charm, the game is so full of clichés and stereotypes that it becomes a source of humor in itself. But the sexism just puts me off. I was chocked by your final thoughts. But in a purely positive way. Thank you for your analysis and your perspective.
    metal gear series is one of the first games that had strong female characters - Sniper Wolf and Meryl (we can see her grow trough out the game) and we managed to find something negative with that .Game using characters to progress the plot,it uses rape to paint a character ? what is this sorcery ? it tries to paint skullface as a negative character and it manages to do just that,because most of the human population posses empathy.Now, the problem i see with your perspective on this is that you point it out only when it happens to female characters ,but would you do the same if they were male? somehow,i think you would just glance over it...i get it's only sexism when it happens to female ,right? another thing i see here is total lack of understanding how biology works (most feminist perspective) ,most of the females i know CHOSE to became house wife's,some don't ,but most do..get it? its their own choice and there is nothing wrong with that.I find it funny how stigmatized the term "house wife" is in this day and age,like is something to be frowned upon...I personally don't plan on getting married ,but most ppl do,again,their own choice.Stereotypes exist for a reason ,just take a step back and observe your environment(like you do in games) instead of listening someone else narrative on life and people choices - gender is a social construct comes to mind...if people who claim that had any grasp on basic biology (males and females have different bodies and even our brains don't function the same)so its not hard to see why we make different choices in life ,for me at least.
    With mushrooms in Volgins fight there are only these green ones ment to use, right? My poison mushroom is not working. This is something bad in this game. For the Fear you need Hornet nests and Volgin needs these mushrooms wich you can't find during the boss fights. And also if you haven't preparated everything before the boss fight it's annoying that you have to select everything from your backpack everytime you restart. And so when you save in the boss fight you're pretty much doomed.
    I think you are exaggerating and to be honest, you are having a very narrow opinion on the matter. I don't want to say this but you analysis in MGS regarding sexualization is a typical argument from SJWs/third wave feminism providing incredible selective criticism.
    MGS has a lot of strong female characters. Some of the greatest female characters in gaming are from MGS (The Boss,).
    Yes, they are sexualized, yes Kojima loves to satirize those characters with sexism but it's no different from his portrayal of men in his games.
    From Raiden walking around naked, completely defenseless, to the ridicule of Raikov in MGS3 and how his relation with Volgin was so nonsensical (hell you could walk around with the Raikov disguise grabbing the testicles of every soldier you saw). Going through Raiden and BB getting his genitals groped by the president and Volgin. To Ocelot getting slapped and beaten into submission by both Eva and The Boss.
    Hell, most of the times the male characters are tortured S&M style while semi naked.
    And you mention how character like Meryl have their importance diminished because they end up marrying with a man (good lord how that is terrible, having a female character marrying a male character). Just to forget that that male, Johnny, was pretty much a running joke throughout the game. A character, a male character that was poorly portraited in comparison with, let's say, any other female character in MGS4 including Meryl.
    Johnny was paired up with Meryl, not because Kojima is sexist, but because he is a poor writer. Kojima didn't want to send the message of "you need to marry if you are a woman",
    I expected more from you regarding this subject. Now I'm afraid that you are nothing more than a SJWs who cries sexism and muh soggy knees the very moment you glance a female character being killed in a video game.
    I loved the walk through but I clicked on to the fact you're a new age feminist by the usage of the word "problematic" before I had even seen the end of this video.
    I feel that your reasons for finding the game sexist are predictable at best and fall flat on their face looking at past characters in the series, so Eva fantasizes about snake as she sleeps? This isn't gender specific, men fantasize about women they are attracted to when they sleep as well, the fact that Eva talks while she's sleeping isn't gender specific either.
    When Big Boss is checking Eva out in first person mode during cut-scenes it is because he is attracted to her, it is a biological function to display an interest in a potential partner that is again not gender specific, the way's in which this attention is shown vary's in a number of ways but checking someone out is completely natural human behavior.
    You also point out that females are portrayed in a manner that deems them untrustworthy, that is false as well, Eva is a spy just like Ocelot, if that point where to be accepted then by the same logic it would mean that the game is just as much showing that men cannot be trusted.
    You are in fact the sexist one, as all of the things you say also apply to men in this game and more so in the series of games, SJW bullshit in an otherwise brilliant play through.
    Incredible depth, tons of different strategies for almost every part of the game, lots of fun. It seems like you have tried almost every potential strategy throughout the game! Great commentaries and points of views as well.
    Jesus man, you love this game.
    I don't know if you just don't like the idea of using the scientist outfit in the part of Groznyj Grad where Raikov is walking around, but it works in that area as well, both times in the game when you need to enter it.
    Also, if you keep both L1 and R1 pressed, you can fast reload weapons (such as the Mosin Nagant for example) and still keep your aim. Maybe you mentioned it somewhere and I missed it but oh well, I'll write it anyhow.
    I love this game. I come back to it from time to time but have never truly mastered it. But with the help from this walkthrough I will make a run for my FOXHOUND rank.
    But there has always been something that has kept me from completely enjoying MGS3. And that is all the sexism that fills so many parts of this story and gameplay, in so many ways. It could have been THE perfect game if it wasn't for that. It really blurs my otherwise all positive experience. But I'ts just too much. I am almost ashamed at myself for loving this game so much because of all the crap that is going on.
    I was chocked at the end of this part of your walkthrough. In a good way. You really told it how it is, and by doing that you are part of the change that is hopefully going to take place in the video game community and, again hopefully, in the video game industry as well. THANK YOU SO MUCH
    A great guide got really stupid at the end. If you can't handle real world topics, then don't play the newest Metal Gear games. Just don't think you're a better person for it. It's a shame you won't be playing masterpieces such as Guns of the Patriots, Peace Walker, and The Phantom Pain because you can't reach the controller on your high horse. Truth is you can't handle the truth, and the newest games throw the truth right in your face. I didn't even know you could drag Eva through the mud, or that you could look at her medical history, because I'm not the kind of person to do those things, not because she's a woman, but because she's a human. And, you are upset that Ground Zeroes depicts rape in a black site? You do realize that is what they do in black sites, right? They literally forced prisoners to rape each other, not just for information, but for their own personal enjoyment too, and it's still happening today. The only thing these games are doing is shining a big bright spotlight on issues that most people don't even know exist. But go ahead, don't play these games, but again don't think you're a better or less ignorant person for it.
    MGS is a frustrating series as it has instances of well written and strong female character and then shits the bed with creepy bullshit in other areas. The Boss is the most important character in the lore and one of the few unambiguously heroic characters in the series. Dr Strangelove is not only one of the greatest scientists in the game's canon, but also canonically a lesbian. Meryl bucks her portrayal as a weak damsel in MGS1 and grows into a strong leader in MGS4, even reversing the roles with Snake becoming the pathetic one of the two. And then finally you have Sunny being the ultimate hero in MGS4 with the creation of Fox Alive.
    And then it goes and throws bullshit gravure mode where the BB squad pose around for photos. God damnit.
Like it has voyeurism for raiden in mgs2 and in mgs3 you can take snake's camo off and just have him shirtless, the beauties dance for you... And then also raiden is a badass cyborg ninja and otacon is really smart and the boss is the most important and well written character ever and nastasha romanenko is a weapons expert and like....
      I just don't see how it shits in the bed with the sexualization parts? it sexualizes equally across the board!! And it also makes characters well rounded accross the board! I think it approaches them in a pretty realistic manner to be honest. People can be sexy!!
    I've been rewatching these videos heavily because I've been getting my friends into Metal Gear recently which has been fun, and...
    You do a phenomenal job of deconstruction the sexist undertones of Metal Gear, and I appreciate that a lot. The games definitely have so problematic views with represention both mechanically and narratively, and while Metal Gear Solid 3 is my favorite game of all time for how much I love the mechanics of the game (as you've clearly shown through your finesse and skill,) and how it does have a lot great writing, even in regards to women, as Eva and The Boss both work extremely well from a thematic front in the game and how they push the stories along...
    Metal Gear Solid 3 like you mentioned, has the disgusting situation with Eva, a lot of the additional content in the older version of the games toy around with unnecessary sexualization, as well as MGS3's represention of homosexuality just to be utterly tasteless through Raikov being characterized as a sexually harassing creep who latches onto the crotches of others, and how Volgin's relationship with him is characterized. Furthermore, "Snake Erasure," while humorous overall, has some stupid tasteless jokes that feed both into the sexist undertones of Metal Gear Solid 3, and the homophobic ones.
    I certainly don't blame you for not really supporting the practices of these games and critically denouncing them, I respect it and I think even after all this time it works. I don't by means agree with exactly everything you've said, but I do agree with the underlying issues of the franchise and how the games handle them.
    Again, thank you for an amazing video series on my favorite game of all time, I remember watching your videos before as a bit of help for getting a foxhound rank on mgs3 for the first time and you allowed me to further tap into the beauty of mechanics this game has.
    I think your view on women in MGS is what you would call racist. you're evaluating a piece of Japanese art using western context, without acknowledging the cultural gap. sexuality in Japanese culture has a very long and storied past that you have given no consideration in your evaluation of the game.
    • @PinkyJustice
      @PinkyJustice ปีที่แล้ว
      I think, like in most calm, adult, intelligent critical discussion, things like the cultural gap is (or at least should be considered) implied.
      He said he essentially can't continue to critique them because they fly in the face of HIS values specifically, and nothing really beyond that. Like he said, critique exposes the critic. He then gave supporting evidence as to what he meant, and how he interpreted that.
      I think your view on his statements is what you would call "lacking critical understanding." Or maybe what you'd call "condescending and misguided."
      Seems like a twitch desire to come up with any excuse to defend something, without accepting the fact 'you can still like something despite its flaws. That's on you, your values, and how they interact.'
      If it was about racist depictions of blacks, would you defend it saying you should acknowledge the long and storied past of the racism present even today in Japan? Or would that cultural gap be assumed via context, accepted, and moved beyond to allow critical concerns to be brought up and discussed?
      Or hell, saying depictions of blacks in DUMBO shouldn't be criticized because of the cultural gap between the States THEN and the States now...
      I mean... Even in Japanese language, context and subject are often assumed, accepted, and omitted because it SHOULD be fair to assume the person you're speaking to is intelligent enough to get certain things without them being said outright.
    The ChicoXPaz tape gets talked about like it's the Loss.jpg of the MG saga for a reason, and while there are plenty of good examples in the series of using sex to tell a story, Quiet was a great example of the inverse; using a story to tell sex. What I mean is that the story was invented as an excuse to "justify" designing her character that way, and it's cheesy as fuck. The fact is, you just can't be a good soldier with more than half your surface area never covered by clothing; all kinds of tactical movements are out of the question because your skin's not protected, not to mention you can't use camouflage to break your shape.
    With all that said, it's a fact that men are less comfortable with sexual themes and imagery as a whole than women, and women are less comfortable with violent imagery than men (it was something I researched back in college and the thing about reactions to sexual imagery really surprised me) so while there is a reason sexual imagery created by men tends to have their viewing "comfort" (well, pleasure) in mind, that doesn't stop it also going into tacky territory. If there were a male character breathing through his skin the same way Quiet does, you can bet all the closet gay righties would've been just as pissy as the hardcore left. (Then again, being ace myself, my attitude towards any nudity is usually just dismissive.)
    And before anyone moans, don't forget that there's a historical precedent for women not really enjoying the objectification of men as well, although I find it super weird that the first example in my brain is always the My Gang scene in the freaking Spice Girls movie. D'oh!
    Glad that we'll be spared another overwrought PoMo breakdown of a simple narrative that happens to have been fed through the thresher of a bad translator. Naomi Hunter is probably one of the most authentic female characters in the history of videogames. She's selfish, petty, vindictive, flippant, melodramatic, morally ambiguous and in many cases downright disturbing. But she's also very believable, and a well written character. It's a shame that other female characters don't live up to that standard; it may just be that Kojima is incapable of writing a female character that is both authentic and likable. Either way, you can go be a windbag somewhere else.
    This guy essentially and obviously unintentionally destroys feminism. He blatantly says that certain actions towards men are acceptable but those same things done towards women are unacceptable and "sexist". If the basis of feminism is equality and not superiority, why is it okay murder countless men but unbearable to see a woman be slightly hurt? This guy is a perfect example of a liberal elitist, someone who thinks that their opinions are fact and anyone who disagrees with them must be either too stupid to understand or be sexist, racist, etc. He has no concept of different ways of thinking. I believe this is a clear sign of mental illness.
      well to maybe answer part of what you said, the way certain things are done to men and the way certain things are done to women are different. like putting a naked buff man in there or something like that is part of the fun power fantasy for other men to project onto, and they're not there and hot just for women players to stare at and make their buttcheeks giggle, as opposed to how the female characters get treated visually. it's not about superiority at all, there can totally be pretty women in games and who you can fight like any other person but they shouldn't be all giggle and butt-shots, yanno. yeah.
