Dell S3422DWG Monitor Review - 144Hz gaming monitor with a VA panel!

  • The Dell S3422DWG is a very good 34 inch 1440p ultrawide monitor with a VA panel. It has good contrast and amazing black uniformity, so it looks great in a dark room. It's not too shabby in a bright room, either, as it has good reflection handling and great peak brightness in SDR. It's mainly marketed as a gaming monitor. It delivers a great gaming experience with an excellent response time at the max refresh rate, fantastic input lag, and support for FreeSync variable refresh rate technology.

    This is a brilliant monitor for its price, considering that some alternatives are much more expensive for very little advantage. The colours aren't quite as deep and vibrant as my secondary IPS display, but after some calibration and tweaking you can get pretty damn close. The black levels are just fantastic though, the IPS doesn't even compare.

    • @iorweth8060
      @iorweth8060 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@motabikeboy One noticeable visual artefact I see in certain games is flickering on smaller high contrast patterns like foliage caused by slow pixel response times, AFAIK this comes under smearing. It's not a deal breaker and I'd still take it over my IPS panel which has no flicker, but definitely noticeable. I'm using freesync at the moment so I'll experiment a bit with gsync to see if it makes a difference.

    The flickering that happens when the monitor is running under 60hz is a thing with Freesync users as well, or is this solely a problem ruining Gsync users? It's a huge turn-off if this is happening to anyone playing under the 60fps threshold. So, It's quite important to understand this, since you weren't completely clear about it, raising doubts if the problem is just a gsync thing.

    Hello RTINGS!! Greetings from Brazil! Thanks for your awesome reviews! I really appreciate your job!! Guys, I have a question: here in Brazil we do not have so many different monitors, some nice monitors do not come to Brazil. I am looking for a QHD gaming monitor, and the prices of Dell S3422DWG and Alienware AW2724DM are very similar, but the black smearing and ghosting of VA panel worry me as well as the local dimming and black looking gray in the Alienware IPS panel. So, what would you recommend to me knowing that I am a casual gamer and I use the computer for gaming 80% of time, but I also use the monitor for home studying and media consumption? Thank your attention guys and sorry for any Ensligh mistakes :D

  • @ghersic8161

    So what are the optimal calibration settings, then?
    RTINGS stated here (and on their website) that "post-calibration, the colors are great" (bumping the score from a yellow 7.2 to 9.0+). It'd be awesome if they then provide what the optimal calibration settings they found are. It's a bit silly otherwise, like advertising something to us we can't have unless we have their hardware to test/calibrate.
    Providing calibration software/hardware settings details would really make them the definitive go-to guys, before & after purchase.

    • @RTINGSdotcom
      @RTINGSdotcom  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Our post calibration is meant to showcase a best case scenario using tools/software and not just playing around with the settings. We do provide some settings in our full review on our website along with an ICC profile, so it may be worth checking that out. Ultimately though, these sort of things can vary between units, so there’s no guarantee that our settings would be good for someone elses unit.

    • @ghersic8161
      @ghersic8161 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@RTINGSdotcom Thanks. Given that the hardware setting choices are common to all, and software can be downloaded by all, l bet as much information as possible still helps.
      I definitely agree each unit varies slightly, but ideally it's slight given this ratings site exists per model not per unit. A shift in score of 7.2 to 9.4, even if those are "averages between units" rather than the guaranteed perfect software/hardware calibration settings, it's still likely to help! If each piece of hardware truly differs more than a score change (post calibration) can signify, then there's no point on the score for "that model of monitor," because it changes purchase to purchase. In statistics lingo, the amount of variance unit to unit likely doesn't wash out the vast score difference you've highlighted, such that your settings would still be a consistent improvement for everyone (even if not perfect for that specific unit).
      I'll check out the site. You guys are already great, I'm just floating an idea to up the ante even further! You're already to definitive solution to before-purchase; this would make you the definitive solution after-purchase as well. It would mean we don't need a calibration tool any more than we need an instrument to measure RGB spectrum response against the viewing angle, cus RTINGS got you covered before & after.

    Good review but if you are used to IPS screens don't bother with this VA one, pay the extra and stick with IPS. The transition speed between black and white on web pages when scrolling creates a headache inducing effect, and in gaming (eg. Diablo) the item drop text smeers in movement getting a gross and distracting shimmering dark border around all the text. I returned this Dell within a few days, I am too used to IPS, but it would probably be a terrific upgrade to someone coming from TN or an older VA panel.

    Why does aliasing/pixelation seem to be more visible on this monitor than on my old LG 32" 1440p monitor?

    • @Toliman.
      @Toliman. 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Because of the moire pattern of the pixels on the curved layer, it’s not a standard flat grid so any alignment or gaps between pixels on the curve will be visible at irregular angles.
      It’s a trade off because of the backlight coming through at slight angles, aliasing will require more effort to ignore. The solution is to back off and distance from the monitor so you don’t notice… because it won’t go away.
      But… the only solution is to go flat, or go OLED/QDOLED where the backlight isn’t strong to bleed through, idk.

      Hey Laup! Would you be able to confirm what sort of content you were displaying and whether or not you were connected via HDMI or DisplayPort?
