      Yup, I went from a 27" 144Hz to a 35" 100Hz and that loss of Hz in almost all games won't bother me nearly as much as the loss in screen real estate. I do think the frame sync on the ultrawide really helped smooth things out.

    A lot of games let you adjust the HUD area so stuff like the minimap doesn't get pushed into your peripheral vision. I tend to push the hud to be roughly where it would be in 16:9, which also allows me to crop the capture in OBS if I want to stream or record in 16:9 while actually playing in 21:9

      That's a really good point! Also, any games that just plain don't support that, there's the option to run them in a 16:9 resolution then set the resolution scaling to "No scaling" & "Perform Scaling on GPU" in Nvidia Control Panel (I'm sure there's a similar option for AMD cards, I just don't have experience with AMD), so you get black bars on the left and right of the monitor.

      For me the extra width par nice with a 1000r curve, i finetune the fov ingame so that when im in the sweetspot my peripheral vision feeds info from the flanks while the larger 34" makes 1440 a little bigger image so it counters the increased fov shrinking the centre of the image. The curves compensate for the distortion on the sides for the peripheral view :)
      if you spend a few hours fiddling with this it makes the world of difference for fpv and racing games. In the races u now see a car if it come up on your sides, its quite cool?
      to get this effect just 10 years ago u had to have minimum 3 monitors. And finding models that matched and had small bezels was a HARD game

    Some games have Ultrawide options in their settings that can move HUD elements further in. Sometimes this happens automatically, other times you have to enable them. Still other times, and most of the time, really, you just get stuff moved off to the periphery. Mileage may vary depending on the game.

    Backlight flashing, overshoting and blury motion is VA panel's fault. When I upgraded from the old LG IPS 1080p ultrawide to 1440p 34" VA, I instantly disliked it for the same reasons. There was a ton of ghosting, black colors were getting smushed, blurry movement etc. But as luck would have it, the monitor had a cluster of dead pixels, so I was able to return it and get IPS 1440p 34" ultrawide and all of the issues were gone. Yes, IPS does have it issues like glow, but its not nowhere near as annoying as having multiple VA problems.

    • @DawidDoesTechStuff
      @DawidDoesTechStuff  ปีที่แล้ว +47

      That does make sense considering when I tried a Samsung VA panel a while ago it had the same weird ghosting and smearing issues. Maybe a should do a “Why VA sucks” follow up.

    • @rraggne
      @rraggne ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I do notice the amount of ghosting on my 165hz VA monitor, but one thing for sure is those blacks are much nicer than IPS's. I think both are still generally good with each having its own up and downs.

    • @liquid74
      @liquid74 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@DawidDoesTechStuff VA smearing can be erased by turning black stabilizer/gamma booster up a notch, as it prevents the pixels from going into deep black, the slowest part of VA pixel response. The trade off is you get IPS level blacks, but can be switched at will. The backlight flicker is usually a problem with Freesync/Gsync on these ultrawide VA panels. Turning it off usually fixes it.

    • @Gurka9999
      @Gurka9999 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@DawidDoesTechStuff Most gaming VA panels are terrible when it comes to response times, AKA blurry/ghosting. For low-end to mid-range displays you want to go with IPS or TN. I say MOST though, high end Samsung has the best of both worlds, the contrast of a VA and the response times close to TN. My Odyssey G7 is amazing. The new Neo G7 and Neo G9s are even better apparently. The G9 range is Ultrawide if your interested. They are very expensive though. But since your running super expensive DIY speakers price probably isn't an issue.

I discovered that unless you use a window manager utility like FancyZones and using the layout shortcuts, it would have been better using a 27 inch monitor and keep the laptop screen open, at least from how I do my work. There's too many unused spaces when opening two documents side-by-side, it's really distracting when looking from one document to the other. But with shortcuts, I can easily swap from a 3-column screen to 2-column one where one column occupies 2/3s of the screen (good for opening Word and a lengthy Excel file at the same time).

    Bought my Ultrawide (ASUS Designo Curve MX34VQ) about 5 years ago after changing from a 4K monitor that my old GTX 1080 couldn't do justice, the UW was still a bit of a push for the old GTX but very managable in most games (BF1 and Destiny 2 were standouts). I still have it and its by far the best monitor I've owned however that nice Dell OLED Ultrawide is calling...

    The HUD issues can be fixed by game developers, in GTA V for instance, the HUD is within the normal 16:9 space, but you just have more screen real estate. So it's the best of both worlds.

    I completely agree with this video: when I first upgraded from a flat 27" 1080p to a 34" flat 1440p ultrawide, it was a little bit overwhelming but you do adapt to it very quickly. Every game was such a pleasant experience. Now having jumped from 34" flat ultrawide to a Samsung G9 49" curved ultrawide was mind blowing and pretty overwhelming! (especially sitting 2-3 ft from it)
    League of legends took awhile to get used to which then becomes really awesome (and yes - you do turn your head from side to side just to see the mini map & read chat). Flying, racing, survival simulators such as Forza, Stranded Deep, The Forest and Flight Simulator are just a sight to behold and experience. You will have the biggest smile during the immersion. Finally, farming sims and 2D platformers are amazing to see on ultrawide. The extra vision of the environment is crazy cool and helps with how you envision your farm or what resources are around you. In Terraria you can see so far on either side to plan what you want to do next or see something hostile approaching you with time to react.
    Afterwards, I have tried to game on a 32" 1080p monitor on another system and just couldn't do it. The realization of being spoiled by having the extra real estate and the immersion provided by the aggressive curvature hit me pretty quick. I can't go back to 16:9 for gaming. All I have to say is get immersed & lost in your games and have fun.

    • @Sunlight91

      You are the first one I've seen mentioning Terraria on a tech channel. I know from the Steam stats it's a very popular game, but it's never mentioned in the tech TH-camr space. The same goes for Stardew Valley, Paradox strategy games and truck simulators.
      I love my ultrawide for simulators as well and management games like Transport Fever. They have important HUD elements you want to see, but also good graphics. On a 16:9 the HUD covers up too much of the screen. On 21:9 you have a full 16:9 view of the game with important HUD stats on the edges.

    Great to know! Thanks! Something I learned while trying to use track IR is that it really wears you out moving so much. It was triggering my arthur. I therefore started appreciating the smaller range of where my neck had to move and I never looked back (literally). I could see it being similar. It is just harder for your brain to process. Maybe it is different for you because you wear glasses and they are naturally curved to help you see the edges?
    Also is LOL moddable? Like can you move your UI around at all? For the games where you want it smaller just choose a smaller resolution and problem solved.

If I'm feeling really lazy I can lean back, loaf about, and with getting a significantly bigger monitor I feel like being able to use it as a TV to watch stuff with company starts being a consideration. Not sold on curved yet. Am pretty torn about ultrawide though. Like, I can literally see shit to the sides of my vision that's not my screen, and 24" is this really weird zone where the monitor is small enough I can still see not-monitor stuff everywhere, but too big for me to sit with my face right up next to it to fill my vision like I did with smaller displays. Sorry I should've clarified that, I sit right in front of my computer screen and don't have any use for a TV at all. I like that you went back to a 16:9 to see how you felt going away from the 21:9. It's always easy to feel like it's minimal improvement when upgrading but, as the saying goes, "You don't know what you've got 'til it's gone." A few months ago I upgraded from a 1080p TV from 2011 to a 4k TV with HDR. I kinda noticed the upgrade and appreciated it, but I didn't feel it was a game changer. Then a few weeks later I decided to get a secondary display. I got a 1440p standard ratio display that didn't have HDR and I realized that I was already spoiled by 4k HDR. I had to return the 1440p display, even though it was still technically better than the last TV I had played on for 10 years it felt like a big downgrade compared to the 4k.
    However, your complaint about now seeing your room behind the monitor in your peripheral seems like a non-issue to me lol. To me that just says that your standard display is too small. My 4k is a 55" and it mostly fills up my vision from where I sit, about an arm and a half length away. So even if you get an ultrawide as wide as my TV, now you're missing the vertical part and can see beyond the display that way. And I can usually just scale my UI to free up more visual space in most games. And the ones I can't aren't usually the kind where it matters, anyways.

They both have a really good IPS matrix with great color accuracy, contrast and backlighting and they don't tire my eyes out after long sessions of working, drawing, reading or gaming. I am so used to 21:9 now that I can say that once you go ultrawide you can't go back to 16:9 or the rest. :D Things are much more immersive and your workspace is much easier to organize on the extra width. That being said, I got bit by the 4K bug and recently went to a 43" 16:9 and I flip between which I prefer...for FPS I still prefer the UW I believe (even though you can fake the aspect ratio with a custom resolution on a large format display).

    You kept saying "envelopment" when I think a more proper term is "immersion". I walked by a curved ultra-wide at a computer store playing Metroid Prime Remastered and within seconds was sucked into the game. It was the Corsair Xeneon Flex 45-inch and I found it on online on sale for $500 off bringing the total down to $1,500.
    Pretty pricey but worth it for me. The monitor I got actually addresses the issue in the video of it being curved and not usable for programs that require a more flat screen since as the "Flex" in the name suggests, the monitor is flexible and you can bend it. It has retractable handles on the side that you can pull towards yourself to make it curved and push it away to make it flat again.

    I still haven't got an ultrawide monitor yet either, so thanks for your honest review.

    When I switched to UW1440p after years of waiting, it was everything I imagined.... at first. But after a few weeks, the novelty of a new kind of display was gone as I got used to it. And like David, I never want to go back. My old 16:9 1440p monitor is just now a 2nd screen in portrait mode.

    In September 2021 I took the plunge and purchased a VIOTEK GNV34DBE2 34-Inch curved ultra-wide which I was a bit skeptical at first not knowing the brand but at the price I had to give it a shot and I will never go back to 16:9 It has been an amazing screen. 10/10

    I use 21:9 for warzone. It's amazing. Hud and minimal can be adjusted in warzone.

    I just bought a ultra wide monitor and got it last week. I got a GIGABYTE G34WQC. Over all similar specs minus the quantum dot/ color adjustment but 300 dollars less than yours got on sale for $349 on amazon. I got used to it really fast and love it compared to my last monitor which was a asus 1080p 23 inch. I didn't expect it to be so big and heavy lol it really is massive. I usually just browser the web, play 2d games, osrs/runescape3 and No man's sky. Freesync on it was blinking while browsing the web, also was blinking in some games if I don't hit high fps so i turned it off. I have a vega 56 gpu need to upgrade. Over all great experience compared to a small display.

    Just built a new gaming rig and decided to try the ultrawide. Purchased an inexpensive one in case I didn't like it. Like Dawid said I can't go back. Great for gaming and productive. Thinking about that OLED UW.

    I wish you do a video or an update about the distrotions an Ultra Wide has on the sides vs the center of the monitor...
    That was the first thing I noticed on my 34" Ultrawide display .... and after some research I found it's named "Pincushion Distortion"
    Basically everything on the center looks "normal" but if you move that object in a game for example in the corner of the screen it gets bigger, wider, longer ..... you name it!

    was on an LG 21x9 1080p display for years. You learn to hope and pray for 21x9 support or at least mods for games. Nice when it works otherwise pillar boxes or worse. hud elements out side of the render area in borderless window mode. Only recently replaced that monitor with a 144hz 4K display. The 21x9 is no in portrait orientation as a 2nd monitor.

    About the Moniter problems, the little black dot probably is something from the manufacturer but the other stuff like the blur is ghosting, VA panel monitors tend to suffer from ghosting. Hope that helps

    I did the opposite, I've recently replaced my X34 Predator with the XB273U Predator (27" 240Hz) and it's so much better. I haven't missed the extra width for productivity as I just focus on 1 thing at a time.

    I'm waiting on my first Ultrawide to arrive. I really bought it for widescreen movies rather than gaming so hopefully it will work well for that.

    What graphics card were you using during your testing experience? I'd be curious how various cards work at the ultra-wide resolutions especially when it comes to gaming.
