      Your daughters letter got me good. My girl was raised around cars and shops with me being a mechanic for 30+ years. The memories flooded in when Sarah read the letter. Now with her being 17 , going to school and working full time to fund her own project car I think I created a monster! But! I created a good one I think. Her first project of her own choosing is a 73 Dodge Charger R/T. Proud Daddy!

    Hey Sarah! I think you are suppose to open the inspection hole plug, then fill from the bottom drain plug, replaced the inspection hole plug, then remove caulking gun nozzle and replace drain plug. That is how it is done with marine gear lube. It basically creates a vacuum to hold the liquid in. Good Luck!

    Oh the infamous haldex unit. These TT videos take me back to my early years and getting into cars. Spent roughly 14k on upgrades, mods, and overall service and that’s with being a DIY guy. Couldn’t imagine the labor cost for everything I did. At least I sold mine to an Audi Forum member, who never drove or saw the car in person. (It was kind of a big deal...) great TT videos. Keep them coming and don’t forget to change that timing belt and get the metal water pump vs the plastic impeller version which is most likely what’s inside yours.

Also Sarah, I would write on the back of those lic. plates the name of the gift giver and the date received as well. Years from now it will be enjoyable to look back and reflect on the times you had and what was going on during that period in your life. I know, it seems insignificant now, but when you spot it (name and date) years from now, you'll really enjoy it. (do it on all your gifts from tubers!)

    Hi Sarah. I love your videos! Next time you have to replace your haldex filter, maybe loosen the inspection plug a little and pump you new oil in the drainage hole until oil comes out from the inspection plug. Therefore you would of pushed all the air out and when no air bubbles come out of the inspection plug, tighten the inspection plug. Because of vacuum you have created by tightening up the inspection plug, no oil should leak out the drainage hole when you take the caulking gun out. Then you can put the drain plug in and tighten it.

    I changed out the side markers on my 2016 civic awhile back and one of the regular amber bulbs that came with it burnt out recently.
    I decided to swap them for LEDs because they look cool, last forever, and use less energy. When I did this I thought it looked great and started thinking about swapping all the lights in the car for LEDs. Until I looked at the side markers at night for the first time and realized they were so bright it actually hurt to look at them. Then some time after that I pulled up to a red light and the driver in the car next to me was shielding her eyes from my LED side markers. I immediately went home and put normal bulbs in them again. This turned me off the idea of swapping for LEDs, but I did swap the interior, trunk, and reverse lights for LEDs, which I think are useful

    Another great video, Sarah. Changing fluids can sometimes be a very messy affair. Especially with the totally lame service procedure that Audi wants you to follow. Kudos to you for going by the book on that procedure. I really enjoyed your intro; on the outskirts of Tucson. I've not seen that part of AZ., but it looks really beautiful. Keep up the good work. Your projects are coming along nicely. I also like that fact that your fan base includes young girls that want to follow in your footsteps and that you acknowledge them.

    You can prevent the fluid from rushing out the bottom if you can draw a vacuum from a vent or some other opening higher up.

      Wonder if Audi mechs make up fitting for the level check plug with a hose barb and hook up something like a brake fluid vacuum to pull a vacuum?

    • @ericcorse
      @ericcorse 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would think the same a effect would be achieved by simply plugging the vent while capping the drain.

    • @delukxy
      @delukxy 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      chiefgecko I don't think you'd be able to pull a vacuum as there must be a vent somewhere. With the temp variations of the fluid and gears, you'd have leak problems due to expansion etc if it were a sealed unit.

  • @TwoTrakMind
    @TwoTrakMind 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Just an idea for the future. It would be a challenge, but if you can put the inspection hole plug back in before pulling the caulking gun away, it may create a vacuum, and prevent so much fluid from flowing out before you get the drain plug back in.

    A friend misscalculated the angle of the drainplug on an automatic gearbox he had up in the lift. And yes he got the stream right into the mouth so he know wht old ATF-fluid taste like. :D :p As a bonus. One of my friend's nicknames are Oil-spill as it is always dirty around him when he works with engines. And I have done similar things like you when draining motor oil. Also I got hit in the eye with gasoline quality E85 we have here in Sweden (85% ethanol and 15% gasoline) when changing the fuel filter on a 2004 Ford Focus. :p

    At the beginning of TT production in 98, the service manual said to refill the new haldexoil through the inspection whole on the side.
    But i geuss that was to long lasting, filling the oil into that little whole.
    Than Audi (or Haldex) decided to do it this way.....from underneath....it's written in the "technisches Merkblatt 2"
    means like "technical data change".
    But before you change the Haldexoil, the temp. of the Haldex must be something between 20 and 40 °Celsius.
    Greeting from gemany.

    The Audi TT is not a constant 4 wheel drive It’s only a passive 4 wheel drive so only kicks in when front wheel drive losses traction on slippery roads so most of the time you are just in front wheel drive. This means you are just carrying the extra weight of transfer box, rear diff, and the prop shaft, drive shafts around with no gain!! That’s why the 200hp two wheel drive is faster than the 225hp 4 wheel drive, make your own mind up!!

    Ok - this video is about a year old and just now getting to it. Sometimes rules from manufacturers are just not designed for use at home. I would like to see a local audi dealership do this Haldex oil change. Any wagers on method? Ya so anyway, fill it from the plug for level check, then drive it a little to work out potential air pockets (really?), then go to the trouble to double check the level again. I'd bet that IF there were ever an air pocket, then you drive it a little bit, then recheck, that even if there were an air pocket, and a little drive eliminated it, then recheck the level, the change in level wouldn't be measurable - especially in the way this level is even checked. LOL I'm so mystified by this method, its almost worthwhile to dig into the potential for "air pockets" using the level plug on the side. My hat is off to Sarah for her diligence in attempting to keep rules, she is exceptional in so many ways, but this is one time rules need bent and proven wrong through an alternative method. Sarah, you are one awesome woman.

      Kevin Hahs,,, jk I feel you bro, my first real start bike I got in 2002 it was the 2003 Ninja 636, beautiful bike but first time I changed the super expensive synthetic oil that I bought a huge (I forget how big it was but about 7-8+? liters) I need my bike spiff have only taken 5-6'ish. After the drain and filled the filter up/installed I started pouring in the oil and got super focused on the other 1" clear window that shows the min/max fill gage... So I'm putting and pouring and I can see my nice fresh synth oil sliding down on the looking glass but it just kept taking it and I didn't notice there fill line starting to fill at all.... Anyway long story long the fill bottle for special synth oil strait on to my Dad's beloved side lawn... Three to this day I believe still a dead shot there..... Lol

    Luckily the newer Haldex units have a drain hole on the side, I think. The normal fluid levels seem to be really low. When I saw it dont on th-cam.com/video/F1RPBot_br0/w-d-xo.html @zed4me he drained the fluid from the bottom, filled from the top so doing it the way you are doing, I assume is perfectly fine.

  • @arttafil6792
    @arttafil6792 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Suggestion; next time you try this install a piece of flexible clear plastic tubing over the end of the caulk tube of the fluid after punching a hole in the end of the fluid tube. Then take the plug out of the inspection hole. Insert the flexible tubing in the inspection port and slowly pump the Haldex fluid into the unit from the top. That way you won’t introduce any air bubbles in the unit. When it’s full it will slowly ooze out and you can easily reinstall the inspection plug. You won’t waste any fluid. Neat huh?

    There's a reason you're not supposed to fill through the inspection hole. You risk the possibility of knocking the nut loose that secures the inspection plug if you shove a tube in there and then you're royally screwed. There's an adequate amount of fluid in the tube to allow for a bit of loss.

    sarah, check the cold resistance of the normal globes and add that to the new LEDs mate. you're an electronics girl ; you get the diff between diodes and globes :) and dude stick a rubber hose on the end of the caulking gun to make that shit easier to get in there.

    i am an engineer and still have no idea how a haldex works. all the good info is in german. if the fluid is super viscous or sticky filling it from the bottom makes sense because air can "stick" to geared/toothed metal parts and get trapped in viscous fluids. but i cant see air being that big of an issue either

    Your theory is correct on the filling. Once you have some oil in there from the bottom there should be no problem in filling the rest through the inspection hole. I did this on mine without issue. Also there is an overflow hose (if it is still there) from the Haldex that goes out to the left side skirt area so don't freak out if it starts leaking along that side for a couple days after filling it. Could also be the right side? My Audi TT PTSD is still hiding some of the memories. At the end I had a stethoscope and a 1000 page workshop manual, it ran perfectly. And that's when I decided to sell it. I still miss driving it tho.

    hi sarah for future reference never remove the upper plug on that model of haldex it has nothing to do with the oil level its for assembly only. oil and filter renewal as follows change the filter-remove bottom drain plug and drain oil the next bit is tricky as you discovered first off find a long enough extention bar and close fitting socket to fit inside the oil cartridge to use as a plunger - remove the spout from the oil cartridge and using the drain plug thread width as a gauge trim the spout a little thinner than the plug and screw the spout into the drain hole-put the new grain plug on the end of a good fitting allen wrench- now get comfortable under the car trim the top off the oil cartridge and screw it on to the spout put the socket and extention bar inside the cartridge and push the plunger all the way in- heres the tricky part unsrew the spout until it becomes loose enough to pull out but keep the spout in the hole -if your right handed pick the new drain plug up by the allen wrench with your right hand and position it next to the spout now calmly pull the spout out and let it fall away while putting the new plug in place in one movement and rotate the plug anticlockwise until you feel the thead click then screw the plug in clockwise and tighten. a vw guru showed me how to do that. just out of curiosity if you heard anything fall when you removed the upper plug it was a check vavle ball bearing if so the unit should be removed and fully disassembed to retrieve the ball bearing. ps love the videos

    Wow Sarah! That is a complete bummer. Bad Volkswagen. I wonder if they run a vacuum pump and then fill from the side at the factory. Have you used one of those things to replace radiator fluid? They are super cool. Awesome job! You really did get most of the fluid in. Loved your beginning. Super pretty out there. F

    Filling out drives in Marine applications work the same way. This will push air & contaminates out through the fill hole. Not fun though!
