    There’s nothing quite like working in a cool garage while it’s raining outside. It is therapeutic. I also hope you and Sarah are doing well and my condolences to both your families. I just lost my mother in July.

    First off, my late condolences to Little Sarah & yourself. Secondly, I give you all the credit in the world for attempting this. I heard the 1.8t was a PITA to change the timing belt/water pump & this shows its no joke. When I did it on my 2.7t it was tedious but at least i could remove the whole front clip to give some space to work. Nice job & i've been enjoying the TT build.

    I've done my fair share of TB jobs on TT's and they are the worst! I would leave in the engine mount, but unbolt it. The hardest part of the job is access due to the fender being in the optimal position to be able to view and access the TB assembly. Mad Props for tackling this job! I have been putting off installing a new motor I built for 2 years because I am so over the engine bay! Keep at it!

  • @scottshipley
    @scottshipley 5 ปีที่แล้ว +31

    I'd recommend checking the oil pickup pipe too while you're at it. It's fairly common for them to block up on the 1.8T and starve the engine of oil when they've not been serviced regularly. Just yesterday I had a TT in the shop with a trashed motor due to blocked pickup pipe, he'd only just bought the car the day before, I felt so bad for the guy! :(

    • @shemmo
      @shemmo 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Absolutely, new pickup pipe is must

      amberjack1234 I have the car fax report, it was dealer maintained all the way up into late 2016. It’s only accumulated 4500 miles since then too.

    • @scottshipley
      @scottshipley 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Walter K Bauer the car had full service history which appears to have been fabricated. The oil light came on within 50 miles of owning it. Super unlucky. The screen is inside the pipe and that’s what blocks up, here’s a pic facebook.com/750034278354279/posts/2113138098710550/

    • @scottshipley
      @scottshipley 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      amberjack1234 agree it looks clean but based on all the problems the car had when Sarah bought it I’d say the maintenance on the car is questionable. I don’t know what the pipes cost in the states but in the uk they’re £20, for that price it’s not worth risking, I’d just change it

    • @scottshipley
      @scottshipley 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sarah -n- Tuned Think I’d still be inclined to check it, the sump (oil pan) is easy to remove, as is the pipe

    This video so reminds me of when I replaced the water pump on my 1981 Plymouth Horizon. I had to do the same thing with a hammer and screwdriver to break the water pump seal to get it out of the car. Took 9 hours and a few runs to the auto parts store to do the whole job. There were quite a few words coming out of my mouth too! LOL!
    I'm liking the overhead view as well so I can see what you come up against. You are amazing to do all this yourself.

    Did a similar job on my 08 vw gti not too long ago. It was a pretty fun job, just not in the dead of winter in northeast ohio. gti was fairly similar but the tensioners are easier to work with imo, the timing belt is help by a bolt and the serpentine belt with a nubbie that can be moved with a pipe and then locked in place with a small old torx screwdriver through a hole... and you dont need to remove the mount for the serpentine.

    Excellent job with editing, really taking it up a notch! Those engine bars can be nice when you are working mostly underneath a car, but get in the way when working from the top specially with transverse engines. An engine hoist positioned properly would yield the best use. I have both which i got from harbor freight and they are great for working by yourself. Next time you go to the junkyard don't forget to bring that cordless ratchet wrench to get into those cavernous hell holes your impact cant get into. Keep up the good work!
