On-board diagnostics (OBD) is an automotive term referring to a vehicle's self-diagnostic and reporting capability. OBD systems give the vehicle owner or repair technician access to the status of the various vehicle subsystems.
OBD-II is an improvement over OBD-I in both capability and standardization. The OBD-II standard specifies the type of diagnostic connector and its pinout, the electrical signalling protocols available, and the messaging format. It also provides a candidate list of vehicle parameters to monitor along with how to encode the data for each. There is a pin in the connector that provides power for the scan tool from the vehicle battery, which eliminates the need to connect a scan tool to a power source separately. However, some technicians might still connect the scan tool to an auxiliary power source to protect data in the unusual event that a vehicle experiences a loss of electrical power due to a malfunction. Finally, the OBD-II standard provides list of standardized DTCs. As a result of this standardization, a single device can query the on-board computer(s) for these parameters in any vehicle. OBD-II standardization was prompted to simplify diagnosis of increasingly complicated emissions equipment, and though only emission-related codes and data are required to be transmitted through it according to U.S. legislation, most manufacturers have made the OBD-II Data Link Connector the main connector in the vehicle through which all systems are diagnosed and reprogrammed. OBD-II Diagnostic Trouble Codes are 4-digit, preceded by a letter: P for engine and transmission (powertrain), B for body, C for chassis, and U for network. Manufacturers may also add custom data parameters to their specific OBD-II implementation, including real-time data requests as well as trouble codes.

If i use the scanner on checking a used car, should it be done with the car on only, or should i drive it a few miles and then plug the scanner?

Before you start the car and after the test drive. Make sure no one has deleted the drive history before your drive and after you drive make sure all the inspection monitors are set.

just bought the 319! Never even thought of using it to buy a used car! Here in Canada its reg $120, but on sale for $59. Great unit so far, works deadly! Used on 2009 chev cobalt and 2015 ford explorer no issues.

thanks for the video! I reset my code (P0431) a couple of days ago and the drive cycle for CAT and AIR hasn't been completed yet (after 120mls!). The red LED came on (like you showed), but in my manual it says the yellow LED should (which is obviously wrong).

After resetting the codes it will come up red on some things like EGR, CAT or OS2 etc but that means you have to drive your car enough to get a run a test on those parts, driving a little bit wont work, if you check in the live scan or freeze frame you will see under the parts that came up with a red cross that they say INC, this means you need to drive it more

Hello when I press on the Ready test comes back with green checkmarks for the Cat, however when I go to the obdII/obe it shows the cat as being incomplete? Will it pass smog here in California? First time didn’t pass because the Cat monitor wasn’t ready!
Try a different scan tool. Don't risk failing again as it shows on carfax and can lower your vehicles value.

Not possible. If all codes are cleared but the I/M isn’t ready that means the owner cleared the codes
You can read erased codes. When they’re erased they’re gone.
i find that there has many other obd2 scanner on amazon,it is more expensive ,i bought the AM3011 ,it is more cheaper ,works great on my husband car.

Obviously it depends on what the code is depending on the code it will specify a specific issue problem or other problematic device
After you use this device and get your codes try going to another good you tube channel (RealFixesRealFast) -- a long time experienced no-none sense honest mechanic who's many videos are viewed by many (including other good mechanics). At his search bar just type in your car problem or symptom and try to find a video on it that he has covered in the past. Excellent auto mechanical help channel. This auto repair channel has saved me a lot of money. Seems like most repair shops will try to UP Sell you on Anything! ***Always makes sure

Try a different scan tool..I've seem this.happen with lots of OBD2 readers.
I’m confused, the first readiness test showed everything good, but after you cleared codes ( which there were none) you got faults on the second readiness test.?.?.?

You missed the entire dialog as he was explaining it…..they will clear after driving it enough, but if you go to buy a used car and u see those red “x” that means they tried to clear the codes right before selling it to you, which could be a red flag
My scanner is frozen. Says program mode See user manual. Don't see anything in the user manual on how to unfreeze. Help

Yes and you can turn off that annoying beeping. Great little tool.
my car has a mind of its own the senser for the doors works again after 2 years the radio speaker comes on and goes off at times cant work it out

way gill , yes if your state requires a emissions test with the obd2 port connected. I'm not sure what state your in, for example currently in California as of today you want to have all monitors ready ( evap monitor is the only exception currently) .

I don't know about other regions but I'm run across this a few times and I just try another obd2 reader it bam it starts to work or scan another car with this.
I found the serial number but how what is the register password?
why do you need to register it, this is super simple reader, I have never updated it.

Mr Bill Purcell, yes it will appear like the scantool is not able to reset the codes if they are permanent codes such a open loop or closed loop fault. What 2 codes are present after you attempt to clear the codes?

Normally you just plug it out. There are no clips or locking mechanism on the plug. What you driving?
