  • PDTC - Can't seem to set your inspection monitors on a 2010 and newer vehicle. I'm going to cover with you how to check for permanent codes and how permanent diagnostic troubles codes (PDTC) differ from (DTC) pending or stored. I will also show how you can get help with your 1996 -2009 Vehicle when inspection monitors are not setting. Permanent codes cannot be cleared by disconnecting the vehicle's battery.

Cool information about permanent Diagnostic Trouble Codes PDTC
Permanent Diagnostic Trouble Codes (PDTCs) are very similar to regular Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). However, unlike regular DTCs, they cannot be reset by disconnecting the vehicle's battery or cleared using an On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) scan tool.
A Permanent DTC can only then be cleared by the module strategy and cannot be erased by clearing DTCs with a scan tool, a Keep-Alive Memory (KAM) reset, or battery disconnect.
Mode $0A lists emission-related "permanent" diagnostic trouble codes stored. As per CARB, any diagnostic trouble codes that is commanding MIL on and stored into non-volatile memory shall be logged as a permanent fault code.
These are the new, emission-related DTCs that can’t be cleared from the ECM or TCM until the computer knows for sure that the problem was fixed. This usually involves performing a Universal Trip Drive Pattern exactly as described, but there are other ways, such as performing a dedicated monitor cycle. Permanent DTCs first appeared on certain 2009 vehicles, and are being legislated on 2010 vehicles. As with any new technology, the “glitches” may need to be worked out in the field, so reading the repair manual and TSBs are important steps before beginning diagnosis.

If you drive a ram 1500 idling the engine for 5-10 minutes at a time WILL cause hemi tick due to lack of lubrication on the lifters, which then wear and beat the snot of the cam lobes and eventually kill the engine. What's also annoying is everytime the code reappears the engine turns off mds which is what deactivates cylinders for an eco friendly drive lol. I swear they want you to destroy your vehicle so you'll buy another.

This Code system is so unconstitutional. It's just another hurdle created in order to keep people from working on their own equiptment. I just recently dealt with this issue, its a bitch to drive 200 miles just to see if the system will allow you pass. This also screws with mechanics time table to complete a repair. We need a way to hack this junk, and anyone who is okay with this legislation is trash.

That was pretty slick how you showed a photo of a OBD reader, and the title "How to clear Permant Diagnostic Trouble Codes..." It gives the impression you're going to show us all a neat hack to remove pesky PDTC's when in fact you merely tell us we really can't clear the codes, you have to fix problem, then let the car delete the codes. Going through this right now with a 2018 Honda . Check engine light came on with 3 codes.. took it in for repair and it had a purge valve replaced. Check engine light went off after work was done. All codes gone except one permanent code ( small vacume leak ) the evap monitor will not complete so the car is staying in not ready mode for emissions check. My sticker expired last month and the dealer told me to just keep driving it around and the code should clear and the monitor should go to ready. Neither has happened in 2 weeks!! I have driven it everywhere and tried all the different drive cycles. Is it possible the dealer didn’t fix something right so the code is not going away allowing the evap monitor to complete? Gas is to dang expensive to be driving all the time just trying to get this code to clear or the monitor ready.

I have this issue with my 2011 Dodge Ram 1500 4.7l. It has 3 codes and 2 codes for throttle, which I've replaced twice, and they never go away. I drove the truck for about a month with no issues, and then out of nowhere, it came back. The other code is for incorrect communication received by the ECU. I've been dealing with this for almost a year and still can't get it to go away.

I don’t know but play close attention to it and make sure you a good ground. And be aware your vehicle this dodge 4.7 is known for issues like these and might under some sort of recall or exception. See if there are any tsb issued for this on carcomplaints.com

My p0442 for ford permanent code won't flash the check engine light but is still on the reader ... I had 50 start ups and 500 miles but unfortunately my battery died so now it reset... frustrating situation( I'm doing the drive cycle as best I can) but it still won't clear

Does not matter if it clears unless you need a CA smog check. Do you? If so then you need 200 miles and 15 warm up cycles and the smog computer will ignore the Permanent DTC.

Are there circumstances under which a PDTC will not cause a vehicle to fail a Smog Check inspection?
Yes. PDTCs will be ignored if the vehicle has completed at least 15 warm-up cycles and been driven at least 200 miles since its OBD information was last cleared.

Do I have to let the car cool down 8 hours? I actually live in my car and I have a O2 sensor not ready and the evap not ready Everything else is ready I replaced the battery about two months ago and I drive daily but only like five or 6 miles, I do idle alot To run the air conditioning I don't have a engine light on, I do have one permanent code leak detected but I actually repaired it I found a hose that was cracked in half and I replaced it but that was like 4 months ago.. I'm not 100% sure if that's going to fix the leak but I would think so because it was a decent size.. But the code is still permanent I cleared the code because I had to replace the battery for a few months ago I have emissions test due October 15 I just went today and they told me two of the things aren't ready I don't know why the O2 sensor is not ready makes no sense to me... But yeah I fix the evap small leak It was literally a hose to the solenoid on the top of the motor I found it out when I replaced the water outlet a few weeks back I also disconnected the battery a few weeks back so maybe the monitors aren't set because I haven't been driving very far about 10 miles max a day nothing really over 50 miles an hour , It's a Mazda six 2013 .. I did buy a scan tool today and I can clearly see it there in the red those two and I can take live readings while I'm driving my dash radio has all monitor is too but it's only for like the RPM and speed and gauges and stuff it will throw engine codes if I ever get them.. But the two permanent engine codes are for the evap leak.. Hopefully that little hose is all that was leaking.. I did go on the line and didn't see much but it was open to the atmosphere for sure.. When the weather was cooler I would smell gasoline when I had the heater on to the outside so it was definitely coming from the engine compartment top that location where that cracked hose was... Anyway I guess I'll keep trying I just don't know the proper procedure for Mazda six 2013 four-cylinder would be exactly everybody has a different drive cycle they should just have a reset button that you can press... I have to October 15 To figure things out I'll check the thread later to see if anybody answers..

Yes you will need to start with a cold start which is 8 hours or more resting. Try letting the vehicle rest in a non garages area if you live in very hot climate. I am learning that certain parts of the country like Texas the garage is 95 degrees plus 24 hours a day.
Focus on long warms up and drive around town between 45 and 35 and try coast as much as possible. You will have to do this 15+ times. Good luck and keep us posted on your 2013 Mazda six.

The 8 hour cool down is really only for the EVAP, you don't need that really to pass. All you should worry about is the oxygen sensor. I will post a pic of the Mazda drive cycle. not sure it will post though here in the comments.

@@RANDOMFIX - Well have to get the O2 monitor ready first. in the time it takes to do that you could get the 200/15 taken care of. But pinkie will have to get good at reading his Scanner to see the 40 degree temp drop for the completion of the warm up cycles. That does not take 8 hours. Maybe 1-2

Not a good video. You are conflating two different items. Permanent code process and drive cycle. The 15 warm up cycles and 200 miles does not clear the permanent code the smog machine just ignores the permanent code after that. The permanent code can still be there and still pass smog.
And the 15 warm up cycles and 200 miles has nothing to do with the Drive Cycle. You can do the drive cycle and complete your monitors in 1-2 trips if you are driving according to the drive cycle.

Did they clear all the codes after replacing the Hybrid Battery? If so get 15 warm up cycles and drive 200 miles. If the only code you have at that point is a permanent code then you will pass a smog check with the Permanent code in place.

It's OK to have a permanent code as long as you are not needing to pass a smog check. A permanent code does not mean anything is wrong with your car. It means something "Was" wrong with your car.
