How wonderful ! This is one of the songs i remember from his days of being a regular Saturday night fixture on BBC 1 when i was a child during the early 70's. And bravo on the visuals to accompany it ! Beautifully done ! Some of his songs i always found quite 'haunting'. 'Jennifer's Rabbit' still with me to this day !
Wonderful - this takes me back. I had forgotten about it until one of my work colleagues mentioned it and now I cannot get it out of my head. Thank you so much for posting - what a fabulous tune :)
Wow! Fabulous song and singer and video. I wasn't aware of Val Doonican until today... how could I have heard of him for 83 years! My first car was a 1929 Model A ford. It was 1957 and I was 16 years old. The dealer told me to take it home overnight (an old trick to get you to buy). So I took it home and took it apart and didn't know how to put it back together, so my dad couldn't make me return it. I bought it for $50. The one you have in the video looks like a 1929 model. The A had mechanical brakes, and you never knew they would stop it or not. One day I ran into the back of a Greyhound Bus that was stopped at a traffic light. The car just bounced off the bus and we both went on our way, no harm no foul. The picture of the engine looks like the one I had: 4-cylindar flathead with an updraft carburetor on the right side. It could go 60 miles per hour if you didn't have a headwind. I took it on a road trip once, probably 80 miles or so... each way. The model years for the A were 1928 through 1931. In 1932 Henry Ford introduced his first V-8 engine. You can probably tell that I loved that car. Thanks again for the great video.
Rest in Peace Val, the heavens have a new angel, God bless you for all the songs I have listened to over the years, you were part of my childhood, and I will treasure the album I have always Good night Val and sweet dreams for all eternity
Excellent video, enhancing another funny Val Doonican song from my childhood. A lot of thought and care went into this video and the timings are perfect. Well done.
+Jazz Jizz One of my first ventures into TH-cam world. I used to get a lot of satisfaction sourcing, editing and matching thepictures to the songs. Well glad it made you smile, that makes it all well worth it.
Hi thanks for the upload I used to listen to Val Doonican this when I was a kid back in the late 80's lol and I completely forgot until out of the blue the other day.
Used to hear this as a child in the ‘70’s and my uncle had a car (I’m sure it was based on), a Renault 10 that Had to have heater on full all the time. The first and only car I had travel-sickness in.
I'm not sure if you're serious, but if so thank you very much. It was my third or fourth Utoob video (the start of a hundred or so) and took me a few hours to make. I was quite hooked by the process of creating them!
I nearly bought a car just like this, back in 1974. It looked like a sports MG, and it had been put together with a variety of pieces. It was very tempting, but we took life a lot more seriously in those days. I remember standing in the car yard, with the used car dealer, and we all marveled at how it cost only ½ the price of a brand new car, and yet, looked so marvelous, and very romantic. Amazingly, our State government registered the car. Oh, for the days or innocence and optimism.
Great visuals too. Must look up Are You Right There Michael, Are You Right. I landed in a boat at Dunmore Quay,Waterford and registering at the office, the Harbour Master asked the name of the skippet, whose name was Michael Wright, whereupon he and his deputy burst into a chorus of Are You Right There Michael,Are You Right..
Never really appreciated this stuff when i was younger. I always thought he was a bit twee. What with the rocking chair and and the jumpers. BUT boy could this guy give you a giggle with some of the songs!!!
I've been looking for this for ages! I was only a small child when I used to hear it on the radio. I always thought it was called "The Rickety Rackety Motor Car". No wonder I couldn't find the bugger!
Found these by accident - memories of being a little girl in the 60s... but your images make the three songs even funnier than they already are - and I love the Doctor Who/David Tennant references! Brilliant, well done you.
now man ... that statement deserves an answer (only trouble is I drink at home now, pub prices is over me head) so a bottle of single malt sent to this address .... ha ha. Seriously, ta for your applause phantomxr, this was my third or fourth youtoob vid, back in the days when I did loads of photoshopping to the pics and used Dr Who stuff for me grandsons excitment. Me favourite bit is O'Rafferty on top of the GPO. Happy New Year to you and All.
Hi Rikky. I just want to tell you that just as much as I enjoy the songs you pick to post, I also love your accompanying graphics. Well done mate. I eagerly await your next one.
This song kind of reminds me of my previous car, a 1992 Toyota Corolla. It was beginning to fall apart due to high miles, about 287,000, but I wish I still had that car.
@TheLeelad yeh ... no probs. I use Widows Movie Maker (which is free in with your Windows operating system) for linking the pictures or vids with the music. All the image alterations are made in an old version of Paintshop. This was one of my first uploads so I have learnt a few things since this'un.
Another fantastic tribute to VD from Rikkyhardo (who does not have VD I hasten to add). "Two wheels were triangular and one wheel from a pram, and the other one cane off of a Dublin tram". They don't do lyrics like that any more. Take note James Blunt, and pick yer socks up.
RIP Val Doonican, a real gent and a good singer, I had a version of this car called an Austin Montego that was amost as bad and blew up at a pair of traffic lights. I got £ 30 scrap for it.
Glenn Cumbria in my time I had three of its little brothers, the Austin Maestro. I used to say I'd swap my jaguar for one in good condition... But eventually that fell to bits too.
Robert Tolhurst Maybe it meant' black was it's original colour. it was painted over so many times in different colors' that because of the weather it had exposed patches of all of them. That's probably' what he meant.
Its 2023 and I still listen to this song daily even though its 5 years older than me
Fantastic I love val Doonican sorry hes gone bless him singing in heaven now
The great Val Doonican, the only man who could smile and sing at the same time
2022 and this song still remains in my heart

Having travelled halfway round the world, I can safely say that this is still the best thing I have ever seen. By far.
Wonderful - this takes me back. I had forgotten about it until one of my work colleagues mentioned it and now I cannot get it out of my head. Thank you so much for posting - what a fabulous tune :)

0:30 - "it used to be black as my father's hat, now it's forty shades of green" I never understood the significance of that! ;)
Unwashed paint will go mouldy/green.

Maybe it meant' black was it's original colour. it was painted over so many times in different colors' that because of the weather it had exposed patches of all of them. That's probably' what he meant.
This song is so weird but really well written
" A gallon of stout in the petrol tank and it does 100 miles an hour..." ....Wish we had that kind of petrol in England :)
Great video!Like classical humor songs
