Delaney's Donkey, Rafferty's Motorcar, Paddy McGintey's Goat.... memories of our childhood. Val Doonican was the fella with the cardigan, rocking chair & a gentle Irish brogue. Oh, and a catalogue of songs both funny & thoughtful (Walk Tall, What Would I Be.....) which led us gently along into his world. Artists and entertainers such as Val Doonican are from a simpler, less frenetic world. Still missed.

You know your getting old when people you grew up with as a child start to pass away. These stars were our parents favourites, so you sat on a Saturday night you would sit there and enjoy. Oh to be a kid again. RIP.
You read my mind, .. it’s kinda scary too, it’s don’t seem that long ago, yet in years it is of course.. he was kinda comforting then, no loudness, kids drifted off to sleep..
I loved this song as a child, brought up as the child of a mother who was a Van Doonican fan. I can see myself lifting the arm on the record player to play it over and over again.... Such a cheerful song decades before kids discovered rappers !
My sincerest condolences to the family of Val Doonican who has sadly passed away. Val wooed millions in the 60's and 70's with smooth Irish charm. He was up there with the best of the Crooners of that generation. Sadly missed, r.i.p. Mr Doonican.
Played this at my mother in laws funeral at the city of London crematorium. Very touching and amusing. Brings back fond memories of mum(Kay). Rest in peace mum. X 🙏👍
Okay I’m 13 and I’ve known this song for as long as I can remember because of my grandad ❤️ he passed away 6 months ago 🤧 hearing this song makes me cry but also smile💓 I’m so happy he taught me these
The one and only Val Doonican. A man and a GENTLEMAN. As laid back as it was possible to be and had a magic about him that chilled you out and made you think that we didn't live in a bad world at all. One of the first records I put on my first computer 8 years ago was this track and Paddy McGinty's Goat. They were funny and made me think what a great place Ireland must be. The world is a worst place for this great man's passing. God bless you mate and thank you for the endless times of joy your music has given me.
I'm a Guitar Taecher and use this song to teach children Travis Picking. I loved it when I was a kid and it is an absolute delight to see children enjoying it for the first time. I changed the 'all committed suicide' line to 'all ran off home nd cried' just to be super careful not to upset any of them.
The first record I ever purchased for myself was a Val Doonican one, and when we got a TV in the late 70s I would always record his show - on just after lunch in NZ - to watch later. I have been a fan for over 50 years and he is still one of my all time favourite singers. I just wish the songs he sung were still to be heard by modern singers today, they always make you smile and cheer you up. Thank you for the video.
Val Doonican was the first famous person I ever encountered when I was just 8 years old. He was a handsome prince of a man indeed! He's provided lovely, warm and funny memories, became an idol of mine and was responsible for many tunes to the soundtrack of my life. Those Saturday nights after bath time he'd be on the telly with real international music stars, I recall all those lovely Christmas shows and that wonderful Homeward Bound series he did for BBC One in the late 1980's. He came from County Waterford, Ireland, where my late father came from - of that fact I am indeed very proud of. Next to Gilbert O'Sullivan, Waterford provided not only a versatile entertainment legend but an all round top bloke. May the Lord grant you eternal rest, knowing that you have given pleasure to many millions left here!
I loved this song and his other family favourites such as the magical toy, walk tall and so on. Saw him live 3 times and his shows were always a delight and a pleasure. Sadly missed. RIP Val.
Oh Val I loved watching you on TV and hearing your songs. I bought all your records. This song is my favourite. Rest in peace and thank you for entertaining me.
I absolutely adore Val Doonican! I played his music regularly when I used to do an Irish music programme on hospital radio - alongside the likes of Enya, U2, The Saw Doctors, Daniel O'Donnell etc. Watching this clip brought back lovely childhood memories of weekend evenings when entertainment shows were chilled, relaxed and did what they said on the tin. I'm delighted that one of his songs is on an ad for a toy shop chain. I LOVE YOU, VAL!
Wonderful, I remember watching this very programme. A wonderful gentle time. When you didn’t know the views of entertainers. Val was such a great entertainer, his shows seemed as if it was a party in your own home.
My cousin Audrey Duggan was one of his backup singers for many years, so I know firsthand what a decent lovely man he was, 'Ireland's Bing Crosby', may he rest in peace, and sing with Bing in heaven!
When I was a kid Val Doonican was my favourite entertainer , I remember on Saturday nights as my mum and dad prepared to go out for the evening them telling my older brother " let him have Val Doonican on later " and as the program started sitting down in front of the t.v. And not moving until Val sang that last song sitting in that old rocking chair , great memories of a truly great singer and entertainer. RIP Val and thanks for the memories.
the days when we all knew the words to all the songs and sat round the old black and white teli singing along, ah Saturday nights who can forget the, RIP VAL
Very much missed. Fred was a good friend. Gave me a copy of one of his L.P's. That was missing from my Wedlock collection. Timsbury is not the same since one of their nicest residents passed away. Rest In Peace Fred.
Superb. I am an English man, who cares right? If this man does not put a smile on your face then there is no hope for you.
