I'd never describe myself as a 'huge fan' of Val. I liked him well enough, but I never would have gone to see him live, for example, and I rarely watched his TV shows right through. But somehow it was just nice to know he was around. A reassuring presence, and proof that nice, gentle, funny guys do exist. He'd never become famous today of course. But I'm glad he was around for much of my life, and its sad that he's gone now. RIP
same, I was from Irish descent and was brought up with his LPs. I loved his funny songs but I hated his shows. Maybe we were born too late to appreciate his gentleness at the time, but I am also glad he was around.
I actually did see him live back in the 1980s, and his show was amazing. He was an all round entertainer, and seemed completely natural on stage. I remember he had a small backing band using a couple of DX7 synths, which seemed odd for a folk singer with a guitar, but the combination worked exceedingly well.
Val you brought so much joy to people all over the world waterdary is a much sadder place to on your passing rest in peace val now in the arms of the angels sweetdreams sleep well xxx
Val was by no means the first to sing this. l remember my old mum used to sing it to me back in the 40s..l'd be about 5 or 6 then. lt was a favourite hers. l must admit,l hadn't heard it for well over 30years. Ah...memories!
thanks for the credit bobbly, CATHAL, winstonmatthews, and all other toobers ... for sure its grand to give other people a bit of laughter ... specially in these days of imploding blackholes ... re: particle accelerator in Geneva ... waaay ta gooooooooo ... lol
Funny when I was 5, funny now I'm nearly 16 X3 You gotta love this kind of music, I think nearly everyone who listens to it must get a flashback of their childhood...
In the information section you half queried when this song was written . I can let you know it was copyrighted by Francis Day and Hunter in 1921. Glad to see you got William Hargreaves as the composer correct, so many wrongly credit it to Val who wasn't even born then. Not sure but I think this song was sung and recorded by Val prior to 1967. I vaguely remember him singing it in the Isle of Man in 1965 (but memory plays tricks sometimes)
I actually came here because my singing teacher remembers my classmate's last name because of this song... hahaha it's funny, especially the dynamite bit!
Thank you so much for your kind comments ... it was a pleasure placing the pics to the tune ... have you seen O'Rafferty's Motor Car and Paddy McGinty's Goat yet? If you've enjoyed this one I'm sure you will enjoy them ... Rock on Val
-- This one of those great 'story' songs, and it is brilliantly composed and sung..... Val Doonican was certainly a master of this genre with Paddy McGinty's Goat and O'Rafferty's Motor Car also under his belt.... Compare for example Robbie Williams's "Me And My Monkey" - released many years later - and Val Doonican still wins, hands down; ---Yes?
Thanks for you praise phantomxr, most of the images are sourced on Google although I have photoshopped quite a few of them. This from back in the days when I always put in a few references to Doctor Who because me grandson was and still is nuts on the programme.
@DelTangBrav "Delaney's Donkey" / "Paddy MGinty's Goat" by Val Doonican was released by Decca in the UK in December 1964 . . . whist "Walk Tall" was in the charts.
@redsnapper1959 That confirms my memory isn't playing tricks - as said I thought I recalled Val singing this in 1965 (prior to the 1967 quoted in the uploader information) Incidentally Les Dawson (a friend) long before he found national fame was the comedian on the Val Doonican theatre show in Douglas Isle Of Man in 1965. Jackie Trent (with Tony Hatch sniffing around) was the female singer.
Me Mam used to sing this to me as a kid, along with Paddy Mcgintys goat. Great stuff! What are the kids of today going to remember of their childhood? "Me Mam's off her head on smack, me mams out on the town, me mams got a new boyfriend"
Val was outstanding at Irish ballads. I once heard the late Joe Lynch singing Delaney's Donkey. There must be a copy of it somewhere but I cannot find one. Just to compare it with Val's version if that is possible.
Yeh ... People can be picky ... but I guess things wouldn't progress if we all put up with whatever ... thanks for your support ... much appreciated ... I did change it to "a singer from Eire", but I couldn't find the ' bit over the E ... still as Charlie Drake used to say "Never mind Ay" ... but then again that might be spelled or inflicted wrong ... I must make a note not to gable on and muck me diction up ... and I missed the tv program about Val on Monday 5th May he is over 80 ... pity they
HJW12 if this was released today it would probably be frowned upon by the pc brigade, the question is where have the senses of innocence and humour gone today.Listen to it, smile, and remember the good old days.
I love this!! Where did you find the photo of the old police box??? That takes me back. We had one in the village until some ejit knocked it down. Thanks for posting :)
As I was saying (I went well over the character count)... it's a pity they didn't make as much fuss about that as they did Brucie ... still I guess Val wouldn't want it ... Rock on Val
I'm 22, these kinds of songs were way before my time. But I can't get enough of them. They never fail to put a smile on my face.
I remember when my Scottish laddie husband of mine sang me this song so many years ago. He stole my heart. Fond memories. May he rest in peace.😊💞
Val was a most polite gentleman you'd ever wish to meet. My mum loved him as they came from the same county.

one time, i asked my dad who val Doonican is. he showed me to Val Doonican's music and now i am a fan.

"A grip, like a Scotsman, on a five-pound note", might have "racist" connotations, to SOME, but, - to ME, - it's just an HONEST appraisal!
