  • A long time ago in this galaxy….was a young redheaded girl named Jacqui, who had no memory of ever seeing the prequel series of Star Wars. So to fix that, we travel to a completely different galaxy! Join us as Jacqui reacts to Star Wars: the Phantom Menace for the first time in over twenty years! It’s a video full of love, laughter, and more laughter! We laugh at Liam Neeson being done with everyone’s sh*t, we laugh at Jar Jar being….terrible, and at Natalie Portman slipping.
Whether you love the prequels, or hate them - you’re here because you want to get the complete Star Wars experience with us! We love reacting to this action-packed sci-fi prequel, and we hope you enjoy it as much as we did!
    Sincerely, Sam

I was 20 when "The Phantom Menace" came out and I loved it. Even though I knew where it was going ultimately, I thoroughly enjoyed the world building of it. To this day Obi-Wan's solo duel against Darth Maul is one of my favorites. Jar Jar was slightly annoying to me, but I still laughed in a good way because I knew it was intentional and not just a character gone wrong. It's sad and infuriating that Ahmed Best and Jake Lloyd (the kid that played Anakin) both got the huge amount of hate that they did that Ahmed Best had contemplated suicide at one point, and Jake Lloyd left acting entirely. Oh, for the record, you're both good looking people. Also, I sang along with Jacqui on "The Saga Begins..."

I don;t think Jar Jar was meant to be annoying. The producer said he was going to be the Chewbacca of this series at one point.

So to answer your question about the setting for the final lightsaber battle, Naboo was a primary exporter of plasma, which is what the Trade Federation was blockading them over. Those giant laser pillars are what create the plasma! That room is essentially a giant plasma farm.

When I first saw the prequels, I found the dialogue very campy and eyeroll worthy. But, I never had the pure hatred for them that some people did. I do think I've grown to appreciate them even more as time has gone on.

The Darth Darth Binks theory was actually a legitimate theory that they abandoned in the 2nd movie, Jar Jar was supposed to be the dark side Yoda, that he used his stupid behavior as a disguise for his darkness. Notice how much he is trying to convince Anakin to do bad things, directing him to do bad things subtly. He was even controlling the fish that ate the other fish, its show by they have the same color eyes. the Darth Jar Jar theory is pretty much actually confirmed by the actor in interview after the theory gained followers.

The pod racing scene parallels the famous chariot race from the movie Ben Hur (1959) starring Charlton Heston. I don't know about a "toy" version of Anakin's pod racer, but the Nintendo 64 game system had a pod racer game. I still have the old gaming system and the pods that my children and I "built" stored on the memory card. It was a really fun game. I wish they would re-issue it for Playstation 4.

There is one example of the lightsaber not cauterizing the wound it creates: the very first time you see it used in A New Hope, when Obi-Wan chops off the bar bully's arm (one of many limbs Obi takes for his collection.) That arm is definitely lying in a pool of blood on the floor.

I discovered your channel a few hours ago and have watched all of your Star Wars reactions thus far. I was born in 1986 and so I grew up in the era of the Original Trilogy on VHS and the Special Editions coming out theatrically in 1997. I didn't get to see the Original Trilogy in theatres, just on VHS starting in 1995. I was 12 when The Phantom Menace came out in theatres in 1999, so I was at just the right age where I enjoyed Jar Jar. I got to see this movie in theatres when it came out. It was the first Star Wars movie I ever saw in theatres, and I actually saw it twice within a week of each viewing. I remember immediately figuring out that Darth Sidious was actually Palpatine because Sidious kept saying he would make sure that the Trade Federation's invasion of Naboo would be legal by the Senate. Only a senator could do that, and Palpatine was a senator and was evil. To this day it's still my favourite of the Prequel Trilogy. Also, as a sidenote, I still have a flip phone. It's great. Lol. Great video guys!

I loved everything about TPM, though I was not a kid when it came out and was surprised to hear that people hate it. This may be an unpopular opinion, but I think TPM is very underrated and doesn't deserve the hate it has received. Awesome new worlds, new characters, design, subbing, fantastic lightsaber duel. The world building is brilliant, finally, we get to see how huge the Star Wars universe really is. It perfectly established the new era for SW. Just wow, it was breathtaking. And I still love it. 🖤

Another fun fact if qui-gon had survived the duel with darth maul anakin wouldn't have become darth vader that's why the whole duel between maul, obi wan and qui-gon is called duel of the fates gui-gon knew that taking anakin away from his mother would have an affect on his training and so he would need a father figure and anakin wouldn't get that from obi-wan and so it's called duel of the fates because it would decide the fate of anakin

Regarding your comment on the role of Jedi following Qui-Gon saying he didn't come to free slaves: Jedi are the guardians of peace and justice IN THE OLD REPUBLIC.
As they said prior to landing, Tatooine is NOT part of the Old Republic at that time and so the Jedi have no moral or legal authority there. Of course, it does not mean they could not intervene however, taking any kind of aggressive action against slave owners or even the Hutts without knowing more about the economics and politics of this particular planet risks destabilizing it and causing ultimately more loss of life and misery than had they not intervened.
Qui-Gon is a very wise Jedi, in addition to being a non-conformist one. He surely thought about this and about how it would jeopardize their mission to get the Queen to Coruscant if they did try to free all the slaves.

I really hope that you two still check on this channel of yours. There is a thing I saw on Facebook a while back that I liked. It has to do with Steven Spielberg's movie of "E.T.". In the movie of E.T. Elliott plays with Star Wars figures, E.T. sees a kid dressed as Yoda for Halloween and recognize Yoda, E. T. Makes things float around the room and makes the kids fly on their bikes, in Star Wars episode one there are E.T. creatures in the senate. There for it's reasonable to conclude that E.T. is a Jedi

As an OG Star Wars fan, I waited 16 years for the prequels. I would've taken my lightsabre and made Jar Jar steaks for everyone. For many years I thought Binks was the worst thing to happen to Star Wars EVER. Then Disney happened, now I love Jar Jar and want to take my lightsabre and end Kylo Ren and Rey myself. Disney took my childhood and wiped its ass with my memories!!! That being said, Rogue One and Solo were great films. The TV shows Disney has produced over the last 4 years have been great. So cheers to hoping Disney has learned how to make shows from a Galaxy far far away. BTW, you two are a gem together. Subbed for the Star Wars content, so keep up the great work!!! Peace to You both!!!

Another Spaceballs reference, a Weird Al song brief interlude, and so much more. A fun reaction! While probably not meant as a reference, when Sam says “What’s this for?” and Jacqui replies “Plot device” it reminded me of a scene in the film Galaxy Quest (although that does more satirizing of Star Trek than Star Wars). I giggled so much at that moment in your reaction.
Idk if you’ve seen any of the animated Clone Wars series, but you brought up Jedi becoming Force ghosts and there’s actually a three episode arc in season 6 that provides some explanation about how the knowledge to become a Force ghost comes to be. It’s not something all Jedi or Force users can achieve. If you’ve seen the animated Clone Wars series, you might have forgotten those episodes (or need to rewatch them....I know I had to watch them more than once to try to follow everything it was trying to explain; and I am still not certain I truly got it all). If you haven’t seen the animated Clone Wars series, watching those three episodes alone won’t ruin your experience of the show as they don’t reveal anything else about the rest of the series itself...though fun easter eggs in the episode would be missed as they involve characters, comments, etc from previous episodes. I’m not saying you have to react to it on your channel, I’m just saying the entire series fills in a lot gaps between Attach of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith (though would recommend not watching season 7 of the series until after Revenge of the Sith as season 7 of the series ends up lining up with events that happen in the film and the writers of the series assumed viewers had seen the film and used that effectively in the storytelling.....I know I am being vague, but trying not to say too much so as to not spoil anything).
I had seen the original trilogy special edition releases in my local cinema in the years prior to this film’s release. I loved it! Star Wars is definitely made to be experienced in a movie theater! Though when I went to see Return of the Jedi I did go with a slight headache and left with a much worse headache. As much as I love R2D2 and Chewbacca, in a movie theater’s sound system their speech sounds can be bad for headaches. Other than the headache, I still enjoyed myself. So when it was announced that prequels were going to be made, I knew I had to see them! My sister, some friends, and I went to see it on opening night. My mom worked at a store in the mall where our local cinema was located, so not only did we get a discount on tickets, but we were able to be there and in line early! My sister loved Jar Jar as did some of our friends. I thought it was okay, but didn’t feel like an important character. I definitely could tell he was there just to be comedic and I was fine that. Some of our friends left the film not liking it. They mostly complained about the “politics” aspect of the film. To this day they still aren’t fond of anything political and don’t follow politics [they do vote and while I’m certain there are unscrupulous people out there who would love to be asked how they should vote and have people just do that, I personally am not a fan of that and these are my friends whom I find myself walking through whatever upcoming elections and options, etc, and explaining their rights as a voter [I’ve been a poll worker so I know] and other things rather than just telling them how to vote. To be fair, I was like that whenever they’d ask for my help with their homework in school. I wouldn’t junior give them the answers, but would guide them to figure out the answers on their own. I’m like that with customer service, but that’s mostly because most companies I have worked for literally have rules about not just offering to do something for the customer, but that the customer should make the request first so I find myself trying to get them to make the request....especially on things like getting a fee removed or some other thing that saves them money]. I have come to realize that I’m a person who is just happy with Star Wars content in general. Whatever minor things I might not like doesn’t ruin the entirety of the experience for me and so I find myself listening to “fans” complain about things and saying they don’t like this or that and so won’t watch it. Which seems strange to me because my understanding of what it means to be a fan is that overall you like whatever it is you’re a fan of, you just like some things more and some things less. I mean, I’m a fan of certain artists and bands. I don’t like all their songs equally, but I certainly still listen to them all...some more than others. Controversial opinion, but I think some people take their fandoms way too seriously! It’s entertainment. It’s supposed to be fun! Can you imagine ancient Romans having gladitorial fandoms and acting the way some folks do today?

There a webcomic called Darths and Droids. It uses screenshots to tell a comic as if it was a tabletop RPG that’s pretty hilarious. In all 3 prequels there isn’t a single scene of Battle Droids ever hitting a target. On the other hand in a New Hope Storm Troopers took out half the rebel soldiers on the Blockade Runner, all the Jawas and uncle Owen and aunt Beru. And if we include the trench run, they took out most of the X-wing fleet. In Return of the Jedi they also shot Leia.

Why wouldn't Darth Maul's lightsaber still work after being split in half? It had 2 power switches so it could be used as a single or double, which means it had 2 power sources.

Jar Jar wasn't pointless. He is reason third act could happen because if he wasn't there, there would not be gungan army that force Trade Federation to sends troops from the Theed and there for Queen would never had enough power to did what she did at the end with deception.
And Jar jar was fine just little less goofy but he was great design for creature

A new hope , the fast flights through the death star Trenches
ESB the fast flights through the asteroid filed
ROTJ the bikes going fast through the forrest
TPM, the high speed bunta race
    etc..

The original Star Wars was an above average children's film that happened to land at exactly the right time to become a cultural phenomenon. Phantom Menace was likewise an above average children's film that could have also become a cultural phenomenon, but was unfortunately hampered by a vast legion of alleged fans who couldn't accept that they'd wasted two decades obsessing over what was essentially Sesame Street meets the Magnificent Seven in space.
As an adult who saw the original films in theatres but who also had a life and saw other films and TV shows afterwards, I find the prequel trilogy to be silly and a little problematic, but generally fun. Which still makes it better than most films. It's not like we have a vast library of perfect films that everyone will enjoy.
Whether the original trilogy, the prequels, or the sequels, Star Wars is like 99% of other media. You should watch it, enjoy what you can, ignore what you can't, and move the F* on with your life.

Jar Jar is one of top characters in this movie. Because of him both species on Naboo come together to defeat droid army. Yes he is annoying but to say he isn't important is to miss point driving force in this movie

Thanks for the reaction. Do you want the full story from the start ?--I may have something for you, but it contains a lot of spoilers, unless you watched episodes 1 to 6. Try searching You-tube for=Star Wars, the complete legends history--It's a 21 minutes resume of the entire timeline, starting 13 billion years before the phantom menace. All important names & events, how the Jedi & Sith orders started & the wars between them. I don't ask for a reaction--it's only to give you a bit of insight on how everything started. only for both of you to watch. Have a nice day.

Fun fact, on older versions of the movie you could even see the electric cable to power the lighbulbs in Amidala's dress on the floor.
Liam Neeson was so tall that they had to rebuild the sets for him (they were built before casting actually happened)
The original Ep1 Yoda puppet was so worse than the original that they replaced it with a CGI Yoda with an impressive result. Even the OT Yoda puppet was eventually replaced by CGI, semmlessly. They copied the animation inch by inch but it still upgrades the texture that would look pretty rough in High Definition.
I never liked nor disliked Jar Jar, I always saw that character as it was supposed to be, the comic relief, the on board clown. He fullfills the role well although nothing will beat C3PO and R2D2 bantering eachother for sure.

    A few points of clarification:
Money in Star Wars is just 'credits'. Shrug.
The much hated 'midichlorians' are a riff on the real biology mitochondria in our cells.
There is a parallel between Anakin and Christ, but the term you wanted is Virgin Birth. Immaculate Conception refers, according to Catholic lore, to the fact that somehow Mary herself was born without sin.

Went to the midnight showing, after loving the originals (the VHS got PLENTY of use on the movies alone). You have to understand, first movie SINCE ROTJ, the fans were rabid at that point. Think I saw it about 4 times total while episode 1 was in theaters.
At first, while still not finding Jar Jar funny, I focused on the Jedi and those fights. But Jar Jar kept... being... annoying. Also didn't like that they brought in BOTH R2 AND C3PO in the movie. Obi-wan in episode 4, "don't remember ever owning a droid" but boy do I remember YOU TWO! lol
Just some of the lines were pretty cringe in the movie. So while the action kept me going back for more, it was the directing, the crude humor, and the unnecessary Jar Jar what really brought it down. IMO.
Lucas, fantastic as an executive producer, not so much as a director.

I thoroughly enjoyed your reactions to the original trilogy and look forward to the prequels absolutely love them also some fun facts when jarjar trys to steal food on tatooine there's a person sitting there with a yellow strip across his face he is another jedi called quinlan vos. Now this is just a theory and I believe George lucas said something about it but jarjar was originally meant to be a Sith lord and that his clumsiness was a sort of camouflage

John Williams is a genius of a composer. Listen to the celebratory music at the end of this movie, and then compare it to the music just after the Emperor's shuttle arrives in Return of the Jedi. Naboo may be free of invasion, but a Sith Lord has moved from Senator of one star system to Chancellor of the Galactic Republic. Who really won here?
On another note, Yoda begrudgingly noticed that Obi-Wan shared "Qui-Gon's defiance." Interesting choice of words. What's another word for 'defiance?' I'd say 'rebellion' fits just as well. Something to think about. I hope you enjoy the rest of the saga! ^_^

The prequels were so poorly received at the time they came out that, the actor that played Jar jar binks (Ahmed Best) tried to omit suicide. Jake Loyd ( young Anakin) ended up in Jail. You can pull up his mug shots on google. And finally Hayden Christensen won an award for worst acting!!

You are right about the link with Anakin and Jesus. I believe that George Lucas came up with stories in Star Wars back in the 70's He drew inspirations from ancient times to Medieval periods with some biblical anecdotes such as Anakin as the Chosen One told by Qui Gon while Jesus is the son of God. But Lucas' story is little bit darker.......

The prequels were overwhelmingly despised by almost everyone who wasn't a kid at the time of their release. From the bad acting, writing, directing, the overuse of CGI (which was especially jarring coming off the great practical real-world effects and on-location shooting of the OT), and the insufferable character of Jar Jar, etc. Critics and OT fans alike slammed it.
If you want to see how it was at the time watch a doc called "The People vs George Lucas".
It's actually a good documentary that's fair to George and his decisions. It talks about the fan disappointment with the prequels and the alterations he made to the OT. But it's also a love letter to George letting him know how loved he still is.
