During the scenes inside Yoda’s hut in Episode 5, Yoda does tell Force Ghost Obi-Wan that Luke was “too old” to begin the training.
The statement was accurate. The Jedi Order started training children from a young age. But, Yoda was also playing mind games with Luke as a test of his character.
When Anakin was being tested by the Jedi Council in this film, the issue of Anakin being too old was raised.

    • @mandipandi303
      @mandipandi303 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

You're so right! Plus, Qui Gon is labeled as a "Grey Jedi". He has a much less dogmatic view of the Force and would've told Anakin his feelings were natural, and attachment wasn't all bad. There are a number of works saying Anakin never would've turned Sith under Qui Gon's tutelage. Anakin did under Obi-Wan's because Obi-Wan's view of the Force and being a Jedi was rigid, with no room for nuance. It essentially told Anakin to repress all the things he was naturally inclined to, or else he'd be a failure. It's like when kids who grow up in repressive, strict households lash out as they grow up

    • @Muck006

... but "the force" is RETCONNED to "midiclorines" in this movie, so it has nothing to do with "nonexistent skydaddy" and is rather closer to "genetic manipulation" combined with "artificial insemination" (it seems unlikely Shmi was a virgin at her age, especially since she was a slave).

    Key take-away from this film....
    1. Anakin Skywalker and his mother (Shmi) were slaves. No one knows exactly how long they had been slaves or where Shmi is originally from...but they were owned by Gardulla the Hutt (crime lord). Gardulla was not very nice to her slaves, and she lost Anakin and his mother from gambling. So Watto became their new owner. Compared to previous owners...Watto wasn't the worst. He was probably the "nicest" owner they had...but still treated them poorly.
    2. Anakin is around 8-10 years old when he is found by Qui Gonn (Jedi) and has lived a harsh life in such a short time. Jedi are normally found early (very young) and are taken to be trained, so their attachments are limited and most barely remember their lives prior to becoming a Jedi. They are also taught how mitigate their emotions from an early age. So for Anakin, he is extremely close to the only person that has ever shown him love, his mother, and he has been treated horribly his entire life being a slave.
    3. Anakin is upset when he must leave his Mother behind, but he promises her he will become a Jedi and then return to free her.
    4. Qui Gonn brings Anakin to a completely new place with new people and is put in front of the Jedi Council to be "test" (judged). While there, he is interrogated and ultimately told he will not be accepted as a Jedi and that he future is clouded. So Anakin has just been rejected, judged, and deemed too old/dangerous to train. This was his dream, to become a Jedi, and to eventually be able to free his Mother from Slavery and get her away from Tatooine, but the Jedi Council have just taken that from him.
    5. Anakin has also experienced "love at first sight" with Padme. Which is forbidden for Jedi.
    6. Qui Gonn is the only one that believes in Anakin and he takes him under his wing to teach him. Very much like a Father-figure to a young boy that has never had a male role model. Unfortunately, Qui Gonn is killed and the one person that believed in Anakin is gone. Plus, Qui Gonn is very unique in his approach with the force and treats it more like a religion than the current Jedi Order. The current Order have become too political and act more like a police/military force than a religion.
    7. Obi Wan only takes on Anakin as his pupil due to Qui Gonn's last dying wish/statement. The same Obi Wan that has said "Why do I sense that we have picked up another pathetic life form?" and "The boy is dangerous. They can all sense it. Why can't you?" Plus, Obi Wan was still in training when Gui Gonn died and taking on an apprentice so early is not typical. So relatively inexperience Master...and older apprentice that had a horrible life growing up.

But strategically, I would dare to say it's actually a good movie. At what point in the original movie does anyone make use of decoys or diversions?

40:26 This part is _also_ very good strategy. I mean, there's this _huge_ battle that makes a very convincing display of an alliance trying to accomplish one very substantial _objective._ In pressing it, the alliance is forcing the Trade Federation to direct combat resources to the battlefield that is opening holes in its defense of the Viceroy which is where the _actual_ attack is. The _apparent_ attack is _huge_ and _loud._ It makes _noise_ and commands _attention._ In so doing, it draws attention away from the _actual_ attack which is much smaller and more _subtle._
      Sun Tzu would approve.

I was blessed to see first trilogy starting in '77 at 6 yro. Was as big a Star Wars fan as there was. But hated this cgi, chock full-o-celebreties trilogy when it hit. Especially this kiddie flick!😅 Years later when i asked my nephew born in '93 which Star Wars was his fave he said EPISODE 1!!!😅 Just goes to show differences between generations. Generation before mine felt our flicks were just as "silly". And about 20 years from now, "Source" willing, y'all be saying the same about the next Generation's god-awful flicks!😅

Queen Amidala / Padme was played by Natalie Portman (age 16/17* at the time); the decoy handmaiden was played by Keira Knightley (Bend it Like Beckham, Pirates of the Caribbean, etc. age 13/14* at the time). It's unclear exactly what age the Queen is supposed to be, but a teenager, for sure. Portman and Knightley were cast because of their resemblance to each other. But you saw through that much more quickly than most!
Young Anakin was played by Jake Lloyd (age 9/10* at the time). Nine or ten isn't really a "little" kid, but I think because of his round face and youthful acting style, he comes across as younger. He got a lot of flak from school classmates, and the press, and the public, over his part in this film. Hardcore Star Wars fans who disliked the prequels thought that the part of young Anakin was played for laughs, thought that Jake was a bad actor, blamed him for problems with the script (which were of course not his responsibility) and other things. Poor kid had a hard time of it, which was totally unfair to someone so young. He retired from acting shortly after Star Wars, due to personal reasons. In later life, he has suffered from many mental problems, which might be genetic. Quite sad, really.

In any case, whether they're a good child actor in a bad movie, or a good child actor in a bad movie, or a bad child actor in a bad movie: bullying any child is hurtful, for any reason. George Lucas went back in time to talk about the tragedy of Anakin SkyWalker and how he became Darth Vader. The Star Wars prequel trilogy was inspired by Richard Nixon's administration and the American Civil War. When you're telling a story, you're telling a story using the tools. You don't use the tools to tell a story. Star Wars the original trilogy was inspired by George Lucas's opposition to the Vietnam War.

And in my view it’s an excuse for some people to explain why they dislike this movie without any discussion as they appear morally right knowing they’re racist themselves. Just my two cents. Nothing against you I understand things spread on the internet. Just wish people would understand this isn’t a issue or true statement in any way.

I wish him well, but that character absolutely nods to the kind of "me um big jojo up mountain with big bongo drum or coconut" stereotype. People say it's Jamaican but to me it feels like a mishmash of that or African. Just like Watto absolutely nods to the hook nosed, greedy, beady eyed Jewish stereotype etc. Or the trade federation are basically space asians.
It's no huge deal for me - I like films like Duck Soup and Airplane that have a few cringe moments, as I'm fairly relaxed about comedy going to strange places. Pixar movies etc are absolutely full of them. Dungeons and Dragons is full of them (but trying to remove them) etc.

The end of the fight between Qui Gon, Obi Wan and Darth Maul shows the difference between Sith and Jedi very well. When the laser partitions separated Qui Gon and Maul from each other, the Jedi began to meditate, calming down, and the Sith, on the contrary, walked in a rage like a tiger in a cage, filling himself with emotions. And when Obi Wan attacked Maul after the death of his master, you can see that he was filled with rage, which took him out of balance, since this is not the way of the Jedi and he does not know how to handle it, and Darth Maul, being a Sith who has been raised inside the order since childhood, who on the contrary feeds himself with emotions, easily he was defeated and thrown into the mine, and only when Obi Wan was able to calm down and return to balance, he was able to defeat Maul мне
