  • I can honestly say this is one of the most original, unique, creative, well-written, well-performed, well-choreographed, well-filmed, and all around SPECTACULAR movies I've seen in years. Neither of us could have predicted where it would go (and we tried), and if it does not win all the awards this year, then we should all just fall into the bagel, because what's the point? I've watched this movie multiple times now, and I'm still noticing things I missed before, and I'm sure that will keep happening no matter how many times I watch it. A true masterpiece. Bravo! ❤️Jacqui

Since you asked who the fight choreographer is, it's the two guys in the butt plug fight. They're brothers Brian and Andy Le. They're youtubers who do their own stunts and their channel is MartialClub. And yes, they do deserve all the awards.

Fun fact about the Nine Days song: Daniel Kwan wrote Waymond's line ("your clothes never wear as well the next day" etc.) unintentionally. After he wrote it, it sounded familiar, and he didn't know why, so he Googled it and realized it was that song. So he contacted Nine Days and asked for permission to use the song in the movie, and they not only said yes, but they recorded several different versions of it that are played as background music throughout the film.

    • @JMaxfield09

So I watched this reaction all the way thru once, then I replayed Jacqui's recognition of the lyrics to "Story of a Girl" by Nine Days - only then did that ring a bell in MY music nostalgia memory banks, and I had to look up the song on TH-cam. I absolutely LOVE people for picking up subtle details from a movie like this!

Citizen Kane didn't win Best Picture. Brokeback Mountain (winning Best Director and Adapted Screenplay) lost to Crash for Best Picture. Black Panther got nominated for Best Picture but not Shoplifters and/or Cold War because they're not in English (this was pre-Parasite). Green Book won Best Picture over Roma and The Favourite. There are a lot of other stuff that makes the Academy look like the joke that it is. If EEAAO is snubbed, I won't be surprised.

Those awards have been out of touch for a while now. The biggest problem for this movie, is that it was released a while ago and it will have to compete with all of the Oscar bait movies that come out in the last few weeks of the year.
If this movie was released a month ago, I could see them getting the three main roles noms for lead/supporting, and the Daniels for writing and directing. It's the kind of movie they'd include in the best picture category now that it has 10 noms and it will end up taking one acting and the writing awards.
A24 and Lionsgate will have spend some extra money on the "for your consideration' campaign to remind people and I'm not sure if they have incentive to do that, since it's home market sales are probably maxed anyway

This movie is different than most current movies because it is 100% totally and unabashedly sincere. It never trying to lampshade anything or pretend like it's in on the joke, there's no moment where a character says 'Well THAT just happened.' there's no undercutting of the serious moments with a joke to make it seem like they don't actually care. This movie is just completely sincere and joyful in telling a beautiful story. The chaos and nonsense isn't used to undercut the serious emotional beats like in most modern movies(marvel is especially guilty of this) but instead to emphasize them. They make jokes and make you laugh and cry and giggle and hurt and love so easily because they get you emotionally invested in every part of the movie because the movies directing and editing and writing and acting are all working together to tell you not only that you should care, but that they do too and it's okay to care about stuff. In fact that is the whole point, nothing matters in the grand scheme of things so why shouldn't you care and love and be kind?
This movie is a master class in filmmaking but also a beautiful message about how to deal with feeling like nothing matters. It so clearly and concisely says "Yeah, sure, the universe is vast and uncaring and nothing you do will ever matter in the grand scheme of things. But that doesn't make the little moments of joy and happiness and contentment mean any less, infact they are the only thing that matters and you should cherish them"
In a world where we have been conditioned not to care about anything because it's all too much and nothing really matters, in a world of nihilistic bullshit where caring at all hurts and gets you made fun of, the Daniels managed to make a movie that tricks you into caring fully about every piece of it regardless of how silly, be it a Raccoon parody of Ratatouille, hotdog finger lesbians, or two rocks on a cliff with only subtitles. It is truly one of the greatest films ever made and incredibly important especially in today's climate of nihilistic 'if you care about anything you're stupid' attitudes, I'm so glad y'all liked it and it was a pleasure to watch you experience it for the first time!

The scene where Waymond tells everyone to just be kind is my favorite. This film came out at the perfect time. In a post-pandemic era, where the world has been experiencing an all time high of hate and vitriol, it really was such an important message; that when you have no idea what is going on, it's so important to just be kind. Not just being kind to everyone else, but especially being kind to yourself; which seemed to be what was one of the underlying issues of Evelyn and Joy had. Being kind to themselves.

If you go through those multiverse sequences that are just 1 frame each, you'll see some amazing still frames that don't even have her in the frame, and one has the original shot of her against the green screen with the VFX team in Zoom call windows on the right. Such a fantastic and original and heartfelt film. I was lucky to see it in IMAX at a pre-release screening. Seeing it in a packed theater on a huge screen, and being in the middle of all the audience reaction was one of the best theater-going experiences I can remember in recent memory. There's a million things that are clever about this film. My favorite is that, although the ultimate message of the film and the dialog during the emotional climax are incredibly saccharin, the entire film up until that point has been this kaleidoscopic mash of genera and tone. The effect of this is that the audience has undergone such emotional whiplash that whatever cynical or ironic walls they've built around their hearts have been pulverized such that, when the emotional climax does come, the audience is defenseless against it. Masterfully executed maximalism.

Also, how the googly third eye is the opposite of the bagel, like yin and yang. Also! One on my fav things about this movie is when they were writing it, Evelyn's character felt like she had undiagnosed ADHD. So the writer/directors did research on the topic. And while they researched it, one of them (Dan Kwan) said that he realised that he in fact had ADHD. He said that it was a beautiful, cathartic experience.

This movie allows the humor and absurdity to build up to and enhance the dramatic moments. Like when the rock scene *starts* as a ridiculous thing with a joke about language, but then ends on a solemn note about depression, nihilism, and calling for help. Or at the end, the massive, surreal fight scene ends with the music cutting out and a mother and daughter hugging after a conversation about unconditional love.
On the other hand, Thor 4 did the exact opposite. (Potential spoilers ahead for those who haven't seen Thor 4, I guess.) Taika Waititi tried so hard to make comedy the focus that no dramatic moments were ever allowed to breathe. Whenever there was anything serious, it ended by being undercut by a forced joke (that only landed about half the time anyway). We got that lovely and heartbreaking scene of Mighty Thor dropping Mjolnir in front of the mirror and instantly becoming worn-down, dying, cancer-ridden Jane... but then ended that scene with Valkyrie randomly bopping to Destiny's Child on a grenade-shaped Bluetooth speaker. We got a scene of Lady Sif lying on the battlefield, potentially dying, and they're making jokes about whether her dismembered arm is in Valhalla or not. A child is kidnapped by a deicidal supervillain, and in his call for help, he spends several minutes discussing why he loves AC/DC enough to change his name to Axl Rose.
Comedy and emotion are two sides to life, and in balance, they work so well to tell a story. We've known that forever; it's why the Janus masks exist. This movie fully gets that. Thor 4 did not.

  • @juststatedtheobvious9633

This was magic. You're the first reaction team I've seen who don't play innocent about the tricks of the trade. You instantly know what they're doing, you catch many of the layers they're weaving - some I didn't notice before now, and your mind is blown by how well they're doing it....
And you are as still as innocent as children, in the best possible way. This is the kind of movie you always hope to see, when people are raving about a movie they refuse to spoil.
The entire time, you have good schtick. Your banter's more about the fun of playing with possibilities, and taking joy in small moments. It doesn't feel like you're just punching in a clock.
And you tackle the entire emotional range.
You personify the spirit of this movie.
There's only thing I have to add to your analysis - isn't this feeling of being overwhelmed by randomness humor, comparisons with other possible yous, gross-outs, sudden kinks, hidden applications of talents, sudden style changes, etc...
And a lonely bitter nihilism that threatens to consume us all...
A perfect metaphor for our modern world?
It's no coincidence that there's an alpha version of her husband, but he isn't the one that saves them all.
This movie is about as much about how to survive and find connection and meaning in the too much information age, as it is about family love. It's why you have two people literally take turns carrying each other while chasing after a racoon, though she barely even knows either of them.
Ultimately, I think it's why multiverse movies resonate so strongly with modern audiences today. The challenges the heroes face are more realistic and instantly relatable, compared to tropes designed for the 20th century and before....
It also answers the question of how to make complex themes that don't film well, speak to a general audience. Just find a way to make everything more literal, and have fun with how much it all clashes.

I was so entranced after learning they made the main character based on the traits of having ADHD (having it myself) and discovering along the way they also had ADHD, lol. But I have to say, the nihilsm and the bagel really hit me as a metaphor for depression, because damn hell, that was what it felt like to me when I had a bad case of it many years ago. It sucked. It felt like it literally sucked the life out of me, and the life out of everything I enjoyed. I love watching reactions to this movie so much because 1) it's made so well, but 2) it's SUCH A ROLLERCOASTER. Seeing people go from vaguely confused to WHAT THE FUCK IS HAPPENING to THIS IS HILARIOUS BUT STILL WTF to the genuine emotional payoff at the end is just such a fulfilling ride.

Loved your reactions guys! And first off lemme say I love the finger rings AND y'alls makeup! Secondly, its interesting because when you thought that Evelyn was letting Jobu go at the end per her request, I didnt really look at it as a metaphor for suicide. Her scene of letting go and also Joy's speech of the pain she endures w/ her relationship with her mom and asking her to 'let her go' reminds me of the struggle a lot of gay children have w/ their friends and family when tehy come out that subsequently strains the relaationshp. I am a gay male that has still not come out to my strict Catholic immigrant Asian parents even though I've been out ot my friends and coworkers and some of my cousins for years partly because I know coming out will create an even bigger tear in our relationship and I've realized for me to be truly happy and ok with myself I have to 'let my relationship with my parents go' so to speak to be happy. I never thought of it that way until watching this movie, and when Joy asked Evelyn to 'just let her go' I thought who says that?? and then it clicked that i've thought the exact same way when i think of my family that will not approve of me. Its interesting to make htat connection

That's a great way to look at it! Suicide was just my first impression, but having watched it several times now, I'm seeing just how many different interpretations there can be. Thank you for sharing yours, and your personal experience, because it's given me a whole new way to look at this movie. I'm so glad it resonated with you, and I hope you find that happiness with your family. You deserve it! ❤️Jacqui

It was also a commentary on how technology is bringing the overwhelming multiverse to the youth, and their parents trying to keep up.
And there were so many references. My favorite is Grandpa's wheelchair sprouting a coffee maker as a reference to Back to the Future and later turning into a Gundam as he lost his Cantonese in favor of English, highlighting the hypocrisy of his position because he's willing to forgo tradition in favor of control, when the basis of his need for control originally came from the erosion of his traditions.

Re you Matrix comment, hilariously the directors stated in an interview the film came about after they watched a double feature of the Matrix and if I’m not mistaken Fight Club 😂. But agree completely the final product was much much more than a facsimile.
Also as someone who has watched it a dozen or more times it gets better and better on rewatch :)

One cool detail I've noticed like you have is that the bagel is in more places than you think. At least the circle that could represent the bagel is in more shots. Take for example the intro of the cascading clothes going around in a circle that can be seen later as the bagel as you go through it and I love that the Google eyes are the inverse color scheme as the bagel. Like the yen to the yang and instead of everything being serious it's silly and uplifting. The circles are ever present in this movie and i love how it all ties in like eye spy little cameos you don't know are important until it is.

One surprising thing I thought you guys would notice- the googly eyes vs the everything bagel.
Jobu Tapaki's everything bagel being black with a white center represents her nihilistic, pessimistic macro worldview.
Meanwhile Weiman's googly eyes are white with a black center, showing his optimism and appreciation for the little moments in life.
Each both serve as a perfect antithesis to one another. They also serve as a symbol of yin and yang, and show our place in the multiverse both being insignificant in the grand scheme of things yet present in the moment.

Re: The matrix light feels and references, I assumed it was shared further back historical notes. The Wachowski's watched and loved older Kung-Fu movies and I assumed many of the notes in the matrix that may have been a bit new to western audiences had their roots there, like the narratives of "the one", etc. Likewise, this is clearly a movie also honoring older KungFu and hong kong action movies (including staring Michelle Yeoh) so I just assumed that it was less the matrix and just my western bias making me think of that rather than root HK / kung fu action movies.

now THIS is truly a movie where it'd be shameful not to see! i just wanted to share a revelation i saw someone comment on an analysis video (thank you random person) so i hope you guys read this (sam and Jacqui)
remember when alpha waymond told evelyn that she's capable of anything because she's so bad at everything? that's because the worst version of yourself in the multiverse is a focal point where your variants branch off of your potential. that's how joy turned into jobu. her mom was a birilliant perfectionist, talented woman (arguably best version of evelyn) was intimidating to jobu joy because she was not good at anything. so not only did she look out for jobu evelyn because she wanted someone who understands the overwhelmingness of experiencing everything, everywhere, all at once but ALSO because just like her, she was not good at anything whatsoever. 🤯
it makes sense why at the end joy said "you can be anything, anywhere, go somewhere where your daughter is more than just..-this-. here all we get are a few specs of time where any of this actually makes any sense."
'this' as in being a disappointment to her native universe mom.
this movie has so many layers to it that really add up to its rewatchability! the stellar acting, soundtrack, writing and visuals are why i L.O.V.E it. i'll never forget the ugly laughs/cries i had when i first seen it. thank you for reacting to this masterpiece guys! ❤️
