    THE BIG PICTURE offers an overview of the kaiju genre's undisputed First Lady and still one of the most unique and often underappreciated fixtures in the giant monster canon: "MOTHRA," the movie monster that breaks every rule of what the genre is supposed to be.

    As one of the people who was jumping up and down in excitement for King of the Monsters I can't say I'm unbiased but I thought her appearance and design were awesome. Somewhere between butterfly moth & wasp. Very cool design, I think there is much more than the basic surface level appearance going into the design of all the monters. Just make a dinosaur giant sounds pretty easy but I wonder if that isn't harder to pull off than we think.

    I'm not a huge Kaiju fan, the only monster movies I've seen are the american ones. But For as long as I can remember knowing about monster besides Godzilla I've always like Mothra. A kaiju who isn't JUST about destruction and was basically one of the first GOOD ones. Plus she was unique in that unlike most Kaiju at the time she wasn't a mutant or alien, or even a prehistoric dinosaur. She was LITERALLY magic. one of these days I really need to get around to watching some real Kaiju films, and I'd definitely checking out the Mothra trilogy.

    • @SilkAMV
      @SilkAMV 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      By all means, watch the trilogy, but don't start with it. They have their moments, but they were not meant to appeal to adults the same way the other films are. That is to say, there's fun campy cheese for everyone, and then there's fun campy cheese for 9-year-olds. The trilogy is very much the latter. But don't get the impression you'll hate them. They're good innocent fun with some spectacular kaiju action. Just know what you're in for, and save them for last.

    In the Rebirth of Mothra trilogy I always found it odd that Mothra fought two different versions of King Ghidorah. Ghidorah is Godzilla's nemesis and there are plenty of other monsters that could be Mothra's rival. Like Rodan since he is also a flying monster, Batra was cool, or Gigan since in Final Wars it was said they fought thousands of years ago, and maybe Megaguirus since he is also a flying bug with a cool design and they fought once in the comics.

    • @KeithTheGeek
      @KeithTheGeek 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      In their defense, the Gigan rivalry wasn't established until Final Wars and Megaguirus proper did not exist yet. (The larval form of it was actually in Rodan's debut film, however.)
      It is odd that they used Ghidorah twice in these films though. I think Hedorah would have been a good matchup since these clips seem to have a bit of an environment theme.

      I don't really see how they could do a standalone Mothra movie, now that she's already introduced into the series. The issue is that she's one of the weaker kaiju, so it would be difficult to come up with a credible threat that would make for an interesting movie without having everyone wonder why Godzilla or Kong doesn't show up to help.

    • @infiniteoctopaw

      @@jasonblalock4429 oh I’m sure they could think of something. While Mothra’s dead have Battra swoop in and take over her territory (infants island and the South Pacific islands). Mothra has to fight and reclaim her territory and save her tribe and priestesses. Why don’t Godzilla or Kong help? Well the conflict could be happening at the same time as Godzilla vs Kong or directly after and the two are resting. To beaten up to fight.
      Not enough monsters? Well have Battra team up with Ebirah of the deep. Battra strikes a deal with Ebirah that he can have the waters of the South Pacific but the island are all Battras. All in exchange for the extra mussel.
      Still not enough monsters? Have Rodan and Mothra make amens and work together.
      Call the movie Mothra Queen of the Monsters. Have it be a sequel to king of the Monsters.
      I thought if all of this in a minute, I’m sure they could do something similar. Or even a Mothra prequel story or something, the possibilities are endless with this universe!

Like especially when we start interpreting these giant monsters of forces of nature/modern day gods it makes sense that at least one of them is like "Yeah these human things are pretty neat." Although I did interpret the KotM version as less literal and more naturalistic IE. These giant species were singles out of many and some had symbiotic relationships. Like it's implied the Mutos were Godzilla's natural prey, so I'd imagine if those hunted Mothras then Mothras and Godzillas would have been natural allies protecting each other.

  • @DanGod07

    Firstly yes Mothra is queen of the monsters and a stand-alone film would be pretty awesome.
    That said, there is another female coded kaiju that should get a film (or at least a role in one), Ogra (not to be confused with Orga) from the British kaiju film Gorgo. I have no idea who holds the IP on her, if anyone still does, but given the monster-verse has both completely crazy logic yet tries to make a kaiju ecosystem it'd be super easy to simply have her as a female of Godzilla's species and handwave the differences as sexual dimorphism (eg she's bigger and has ear like crests but no radioactive breath or back spikes).
    Also because Gorgo could be summed up as; humans capture baby kaiju, mother kaiju flattens Britain's navy and most of London to rescue him it would be an oppotunity to add Godzilla Jr into the mix and maybe do a more solo "giant monster is scary" film whilst keeping said monster sympathetic and maybe throw in a climactic fight at the end (say for example Mothra flies in to protect the humans, fights Ogra to a draw and they reach some sort of understanding).
    TL;DR Do a Gorgo remake, include Mothra for better results.

    No bob, the 2000s era mothra appearances were not jut nostalgic references to the original. Only Tokyo SOS. GMK and Final Wars both completely reimagine mothra's lore. The shobijin aren't even in GMK, and Mothra never had a rivalry with Gigan before.

    One interesting thing to point out is that in the Rebirth of Mothra trilogy, Mothra Leo the main monster in the trilogy is male instead of being female like all the other Mothra's. It is interesting to see what a male version of Mothra looks like and he does have a cool design but it is a shame that the most well know female kaiju finally got her own standalone movies after decades of being in Godzilla movies gets replaced by a male version in the first of three movies.

    • @voltijuice8576

      Godzilla is probably the best-known kaiju, who I grew up assuming was female because of the eggs, Minya, etc. There's only one, who they refer to as male - yet somehow eggs occaisionally appear, so Occam's razor etc.

    Wait, are we calling her Zee Ee Zang now? I followed her career quite closely back in the 00's, and everyone in my circles (practically none of whom had more than a rudimentary knowledge of Chinese) knew to put her name in "East Asian" order and knew that the "zh" in Zhang was pronounced differently from the "z" in Ziyi.

    One of the big reasons I don't like most kaiju films - and which is fairly encapsulated in this Mothra stuff - is that it's like cheering watching a nature documentary. If Godzilla, Mothra, Gamera etc are these big animals, watching them get beat up is really just sad and heartbreaking. Even these clips of the big stupid puppets getting shot by fake lasers makes me feel bad for the moth. Watching Mothra DIE is KotM was awful.
