    "GODZILLA VS KONG" has a title, premise and dual-lead cast designed to make anyone interested say: "All I need to see is the monkey punch the dinosaur and I'll get my money's worth" ...and a movie studio apparently ready to say "We're prepared to hold you to that statement!;" delivering BIG on cleverly-choreographed and epically-staged monster brawls but coming up short (or, rather, feeling suspiciously truncutated) on continuing the high standards for storytelling, emotional resonance and genuine "awe" to the spectacle set by "KING OF THE MONSTERS." That doesn't stop it from being a TON of fun... just from being much more than that.

    I'm so happy to see a mostly positive reaction to this movie by most people. I thought for sure cynicism would keep people away, but I feel like we needed a big, silly, fun spectacle like this, since we really didn't have one for an entire year and not really since Endgame.
    This movie did for 2021 what Animal Crossing and Doom Eternal did last year

    I think KotTM is still a better film, but that's only because of the little details. Godzilla's classic roar, the use of classic music, and even smaller things like crediting Godzilla as himself. That being said, I still think the Monsterverse is the only Cinematic Universe that's working so far outside of Marvel.

    • @jasonblalock4429
      @jasonblalock4429 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Overall I liked GvK better, but I do agree about the music. No offense to JunkieXL, their work was fine, but I really thought Bear McCreary knocked it out of the park with his GKotM score and that he should have stuck around as the franchise composer. He was PERFECT.

    • @RiainRamblez
      @RiainRamblez 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@jasonblalock4429 definitely. I know why they'd want to move away from classic music, as it just adds costs to buy it from Toho, but damn Mothra's theme, Godzillas theme, and the Blue Oyster Cult song were amazing. I do respect Junkie XL, but like his work on the Sonic movie all the music he composed was forgettable in a series with memorable music

    • @SCF721
      @SCF721 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@RiainRamblez Junkie XL did a pretty great job in my opinion. However I think its less an issue that he didnt make a good score, because he did, but more its a good score coming off the heels of a FANTASTIC score in KOTM.
      I was honestly pretty disappointed seeing that Bear McCreary wasn't reprising his role for the OST but I was hyped when I saw Junkie XL in the opening credits...and while the score did have some highlights, it wasnt near the levels of hype that KOTM had.
      On the whole I enjoyed each movie more for different reasons. GvK had waaaaayyy better fights, mostly being due to them actually playing out rather than cutting to the humans every 5 seconds, and KOTM i enjoyed for...almost everything else. I mean the quality of both stories are about the same but KOTM seemed like it was attempting to be interesting.

    • @RiainRamblez
      @RiainRamblez 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@SCF721 yeah y'know what that's fair. KoTM definitely felt a little more interesting just cuz of how much new stuff it was bringing to the table in the Monsterverse. That being said, I really can't bring myself to hate any of the Monsterverse movies. I think Godzilla (2014) is probably the weakest and even then that's only cuz the following movies are just so good

    • @SCF721
      @SCF721 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@RiainRamblez Plus KOTM gave a lot more context as to why the monsters are the way the are, like how Godzilla and Ghidorah are apexes and how the titans are restoring the planet. In GvK the reasoning feels paper thin.
      Also Godzilla 2014 is the one movie where I think we couldve had good human characters, but they wasted Bryan Cranston. He was so great in the little time that he had and after he's dead the movie takes a dip in quality because now the lack of monsters is even more annoying seeing as the human stuff is forgettable and boring.

    I really dug it, but there are some REALLY clear examples that much was left on the editing floor. The director said a 5 hour cut exists and I believe it. Not that I think this needs a 5 hour cut. The human characters just aren't interesting enough to warrant that much expansion and getting to the title card fights sooner rather than later is the better way to go.
    Still, it's clear that motivations were cut, as well as I assume expository scenes like how they got Kong on the transport ship, and I'll bet there's world-building scenes cut as well featuring or mentioning other titans. That and the expository scenes could have been added back in, but for the sake of the running time, I understand why.

    • @UnreasonableOpinions
      @UnreasonableOpinions 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I also preferred King of the Monsters. The 'slog' was grounding, characters, and the existence of a world in coherence. It wasn't monsters fighting monsters, but it existed to let you see the monsters fight monsters and feel like this is more real, more true. If you don't like characters or things that try to be serious when they should be nonsense, GvK is clearly better, because there is more fight. If you care about grounding, GvK is much worse because instead of trying extremely hard and getting pretty close like KotM, it just gives up and has Zany Fun Characters like every cheap children's cartoon.
      It is not impressive to me to make a show whose premise is hard to take seriously and then to just not bother taking it seriously. That's not an accomplishment. Taking a show whose premise is nearly impossible to take seriously, and demanding that the characters, the actors, and the production team take it completely seriously is more impressive to me, because that is extremely hard.

    Yeah, kinda mixed feelings about this Kong vs Godzilla movie. It was a good watch all the way through, but the small negatives kept pulling me out. They criminally underused Millie Bobby Brown, her whole side-plot could be cut out without loosing anything of significance. She was the heart of King of the Monsters, it's real damn unfortunate. She and her Dad should have been the Godzilla whisperers, but I guess if the movie has Kong whisperers already that's the quota. The corporation "bad guys" are just cliché comically evil villains. All with the Evil Secret Lair, Evil Henchmen and so forth. King of Monsters had contrived eco-terrorists, but they were way more real than these clowns. And that character Bob mention was truly done dirty. The fight in Hong Kong was cool, but yeah the OG Pacific Rim still done it better. Also, my fav monster won 2:1, so I'm satisfied. Oh, and just another little detail I found particularly tasteless: they wiped out the natives of Skull Island off-screen for no other reason than to put the Kong whisperer deaf girl (she was great, btw) into the care of that scientist lady. Anyways, it was a good movie, but King of Monsters is still the best of the bunch.

    I remember from very long ago, a Big Picture episode Bob made after the first Godzilla trailer landed, and he was less then enthused, which was unfortunately a largely correct instinct. A Gozilla movie in the 2010s went from 'I never thought I'd see that wave cresting' to 'yeah, of course they're making one'. This was my 'I never thought I'd see that wave cresting', largely because of all the paper work, and this would end up with a whole lot of rights disputes and legal red tape as far as the eye can see. That is sad, but now that it's here and it's awesome, I'm glad they went through all of that.

I hope that it encourages people to seek out older japanese Gojira films though. I'll probably check this out eventually but it just jeverhit the right time for me. I am aware that I'm an older fan and like a certain few times that it has bit but it does bum me out a little that the american version won't quite try to speak to that cultural difference in interpretation. Either way, I am happy that we have something for young people to get into with the greatest kaju of all time.

    The Monsterverse movies are following the same arc as the original Godzilla films and that's A-OK. Godzilla 2014 was like Godzilla of the 1950's: full of atmosphere and focused on people and how they react to an impossible beast. KOTM had a 60's vibe: chock full of kaiju who are way more interested in each other than humanity and we're witness to the destruction they cause, again from the perspective of humanity. GvK was more like a 70's Godzilla movie: Full color titans doing battle in all their glory. Pro wrestling style attacks, combo moves, and dramatic last minute reversals. This was my favorite of the series.

Mark. Just Mark, man. What an awful character and awful performance. Hated him from his first line, and my opinion only went downhill with every cliche "secretly badass dad" scene he got. I was relieved that GvK only gave him about a minute and a half of screen time, because he was just unbearable.

    Just saw it in theaters yesterday, and yeah, it's fun, but you could *definitely* tell the studio had a lot of the plot hacked to bits in editing. Normally that'd feel like a good thing ("MOAR MONSTER MASH TIME!"), but the human sideplots not really feeling fleshed out caused the battle scenes to fall a little flatter than they should have. I'm still of the mind that Skull Island and King of the Monsters are the best movies in this series so far, and it's largely because there's a solid balance between the human characters actually being somewhat interesting and the sheer spectacle of the kaiju fights; this was still enjoyable, but it felt like cutting one part of the equation made the other part a little weaker than it could have been.

    The visuals were fun, but honestly this made me appreciate G2014 more. The monsters in G2014 move slowly and with weight and the cinematography makes them feel huge. In this film they're more weightless, they move faster and in ways that animals of that size should'nt be able to move, it feels more like a video game.

  • @TS2dethmonkey
    @TS2dethmonkey 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Well I think the reason why Kong was not "given the top billing" and the central monster of the story is just due to the fact that, lets face it, Godzilla is way more popular then him these days, especially when compared to the time of the original crossover movie from the 60s. It is a shame as Kong Skull Island is my favorite of this movie series so far and to be honest, I'm more of a King Kong fan then Godzilla fan so I was eager to see the Kong stuff expanded more then them actually fighting. But oh well.

  • @moguera
    @moguera 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I will say that the one thing this movie definitely does better than KOTM is the cinematography of the monster fights. For all that I love KOTM absolutely to death the few things I can admit that it could improve upon were its tendency to always hide the monsters behind near constant atmospheric effects, like snow, fog, or rain (lots of rain); and its tendency to cut away to human-perspective shots way too often, so that we keep winding up in these borderline POV shots of the human characters where the monsters just happen to come crashing through the background in near incomprehensible blurs that don’t really allow you to see what’s going on.
    In contrast, with Godzilla vs. Kong, when the monsters are on screen, the monsters are almost always the focus of the camera. When Godzilla and Kong clash, you get to see their fight in all its brutal glory. They also did away with the atmospheric effects. The sea-battle takes place in broad daylight, with both monsters clearly illuminated. The battle in Hong Kong takes place mainly at night, but with clear weather, and the neon lights illuminating the buildings make it easy to see what’s happening, and the final battle once again takes place during the daytime. So, when it comes to being able to actually see what’s going on with the monsters, Godzilla vs. Kong does come out on top in that regard.

      Yeah. In a way, I thought that GKotM was trying just a *bit* too hard to seriously sell its ridiculous mythology, whereas I feel like this one is where they said "Fuck it, let's go pure pulp" and just started having fun. Absolutely everything about the Hollow Earth thing is utterly ridiculous from start to finish but, my god, it's one of the most beautiful and creatively-realized locations I've seen in an action movie in ages. And I'm looking forward to seeing more of it in future films.

    • @UnreasonableOpinions
      @UnreasonableOpinions 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@jasonblalock4429 I appreciate that many people prefer that it not try to be serious and spend less time on it, but I enjoy films that take a ridiculous premise and try to make it grounded anyway. Any film can take a silly premise and not bother taking it seriously, but it is a huge challenge to take a silly premise and do everything you can to convince the audience that it needs to be taken seriously. The audience know it's a trick, but seeing someone turn something into a dove is much more impressive than just showing me a dove.
      I did enjoy this film a lot; even if the not-monsters things were not nearly so good as KotM the monster fights were as good as it is possible to get. And I understand why if you don't care about taking it seriously and want the monsters to fight more that this would be much more fun to you.

    My thoughts; Some of the camera angles got me confused with what was happening, particularly with Kong. Godzilla got tossed around a little too much but I thought it was pretty cool how it seems like Godzilla changed his tactics against Kong when his usual style wasn't working and was crawling around. Spoiler seemed OP but that could have been due to exhaustion of the titular characters. Was that one monster on screen for a moment Anguirus?
    I'd like to see another 'zilla movie in this franchise to include Megalon & Gigan. Would also like to see a proper underground fight against Godzilla. It seems like the kind of place no one would want to fight Godzilla but we never really see what happens if an opponent is also aquaticly advantaged. Giant squid/crab (Cthulu? lol) as a B-tier warm-up fight would be pretty cool.

Yes, KotM had problems like spending too much time trying to get us to empathize with the mother and the monster fights being at night or during storms, but that stuff didn't bug me all that much. GvK's problems, for me anyway, were that its first act drags on and doesn't pick up until the fight on the aircraft carriers. It's great from that point forward...except for all the scenes with the conspiracy theory guy and the 2 kids. I found all three of them extremely annoying and really harmed my enjoyment of the film. Maybe it's cause I spend too much time having to hear conspiracy theories both at my job and on social media and I wanted an escape from that shit, but I would have loved it if they found some other way to reveal the evil tech company is an evil tech company.
